Funny, inspiring andEMPOWERING

As The Book of Mormon embarks on an extensive UK, Louis Wise spoke to songwriter Robert Lopez ahead of its date in Leeds.

ot a huge amount would seem to connect the plucky young feminist empowerment of Disney’s Frozen with the naughty, dirty, sweary phenomenon that is the Broadway hit The Book of Mormon. They are both full of great tunes, sure, and both have a sense of

and magical powers and sisterhood, and the other one seems, at least, to be all about shocking AIDS jokes and doing unseemly things with frogs. Yet the surprising, even scary thing, is that both came from the same mind - that of the songwriter Robert Lopez.

“I mean, it IS weird,” chuckles the 43-year-old New Yorker, pondering how the man who wrote ‘Let It Go’ also gave us Mormon’s ‘Hasa Diga Eebowai’. “I’m still me?!”

Little is wrong with Lopez - at least from

and Tony - you can only be doing things right. His CV includes not only The Book hit, the equally naughty Avenue Q, and also

“John Legend is younger than me, but he was like a few months older than me when

who’s counting?”

Ever since The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway on 2011, the show has become one of the most successful theatre events of the decade. “The truth is, we had imagined it would be controversial, and we hoped that it would run a year,” he says, looking back. But neither of those things are quite true: the love for it outweighs any minor controversies, and as it prepares to visit continental Europe and the UK, having conquered America, Australia and Canada, you could say it’s gaining nearly as many converts as the missionaries it so lovingly sends up.

Surprising as it may seem, The Book of Mormon is actually a great marker of Lopez’s work, combining classic song craft and a deep love of musicals with a fresh, contemporary, often irreverent tone. It follows the journey of two young brighteyed Mormon teens, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham who, as tradition requires, are sent out to spread the word as they reach 19 - call it a particularly spiritual gap year.

somewhat shocked by the reality of the situation — The Lion King it ain’t. The Ugandans don’t necessarily need saving in

the Mormon sense - more from the terrifying warlord next door, who is threatening all the female villagers with FGM. Somehow, all this is relayed in uproarious, bracing

turns out to be just one preconception the show takes huge pleasure in upending, in the rudest, lewdest ways possible. And the real shocker is that by the end, the show reveals it has a huge heart too. Lopez, who along with Parker and Stone had always had a surprising soft spot for Mormonism, would have had it no other way.

“It’s about what we talked about the very are so quick to laugh at Mormons - and we wanted, in the end, to be able to turn it around on them in the end. Because really, any belief in anything impossible is sort of funny — but also, it’s very inspiring and empowering. And I think that’s why the shows sings so much.”

To understand how Lopez came to cowrite the show, you have to rewind way back to the beginning, before he even met Parker and Stone in 2003. You have to go back even beyond him seeing their musical

and Uncut, and being dazzled by its pace and wit (“I was like, this is the best musical of the last ten years, for sure”). You’d probably

to see a musical, A Chorus Line - his aunt took him along, because his mum had cried off. “It was way over my head”. It clearly had an effect though, because he started writing songs on the piano, encouraged by the teacher he was taking classes with at the

a Day’, for some reason. I’m not Jewish, but I guess growing up in New York pushes you in that direction.”

Ultimately, the story is mostly an unlikely bromance between the mismatched pair of Price and Cunningham. Ask Lopez who he associates with more of the two and he smiles. “I was a straight-A student, and you know, I’ve been accused of being a little too arrogant at times.” This is very Price, the all-American kid whose perceptions of the world - and of himself - are jolted by his visit to Africa. And yet when it came down to working on the show, Lopez went a bit more Cunningham, the goofy sidekick type in thrall to Price,

“I was just so in awe of getting to work with my heroes.”

Celebrate GOOD TIMES

Leeds steps into party season in style, writes Jordan Odu.

Is it me, or does party season start earlier every year? No sooner has the warm weather turned to a chill we are embracing pumpkin spice lattes and pre-festive planning!

The autumn days have been jampacked so far at PGHL with exciting launches and new collaborations. We were thrilled to work with the mighty Leeds United recently to showcase its stunning new hospitality spaces in Elland Road’s East Stand. We hosted an exclusive media preview, which included a tour of all four venues alongside a mouthwatering sample of the menu from each, to

entertaining, events and conferences at the ground can offer. Then to top it all off, we held a huge party to launch the brand-new Hisense Lounge, a sleek new space for matchdays and events. If you’re looking to hire some space for Christmas party, it ticks all the boxes.

We were honoured once again to be the event and PR partner for The Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards. It was another night to remember celebrating courageous young people from across the region. The evening raised a record-breaking amount with over £100,000 donated to support charities across Yorkshire and welcomed over 500 guests and celebrities to a ‘Neon Jungle’ themed celebration with extravagant décor, spectacular entertainment and live musical performances. It’s always a hugely inspiring evening and a huge congratulations to all the very deserving winners.

As my Sunday roast tour of Leeds continues, my latest stop was Crowded House, the new rooftop escape (formerly Angelica and Crafthouse) in the heart of Leeds. We opted for the sharing roast which was a real feast with three meats, banging roasties, rich red wine, and top-notch sides. Added to that were some delicious seasonal cocktails, and a backdrop of live acoustic music, making

this my new fave Sunday hangout.

Now we may be deep into chilly season but there is one new opening that is bringing some much-needed warmth to the city. Say hello to Federal, Manchester’s award-winning brunch favourite which is now bringing a slice of Aussie sunshine to Boar Lane. This vibrant café has only been open a few weeks but its already making its mark. Expect delicious coffee, its famous canned matcha, indulgent French toast, and Insta-worthy dishes that make brunch a real occasion. I guarantee one visit, and you’ll be hooked!

And talking of new openings, one of the most exciting restaurants to arrive in Leeds recently is India Bistro. The Chapel for the award-winning Dubai-based group suburbs with stunning décor, exceptional

food and drinks and a vibrant energy. The menu is truly mouthwatering with plenty of time-honoured recipes passed down through generations all with a tasty modern twist. It’s a fantastic addition to Chapel Allerton dining scene and one to add to your must-visit list.

The transformativePOWER OF THE ARTS

Stepping down from her role as director of Cast Doncaster, Deborah Rees leaves a legacy of lasting partnerships and inspiration. She spoke to Richard Abbey.

For theatres up and down the country, Christmas means only one thing – pantomime. Cast in Doncaster is no exception and will be showcasing its production of Cinderella in its main auditorium from 28 November right through to 4 January.

Taking on the title role of Cinderella is Aamira Challenger, whose impressive stage credits include performances at Shakespeare’s Globe in The Comedy of Errors and in the West End production of Blithe Spirit.

The iconic Ugly Stepsisters will be

played by Adam Porter Smith as Cassie and the returning Ben Eagle as Donna. This marks Ben’s third year as a dame at Cast, a role he has perfected over a long career that includes performances at the Royal Albert Hall and previous Cast pantomimes like Jack and the Beanstalk (2024) and Beauty and the Beast (2023).

Cast favourite Joe Parker, who last performed at the theatre in Jack and the Beanstalk, returns as the dashing Prince Charming. The beloved character Buttons will be played by the multi-talented Tasha Dowd, an actor-

Walrus Has a Right to Adventure at The Liverpool Everyman Theatre.

The dual role of Dandini and Fairy Godmother will be brought to life by Keeley Fitzgerald, who has an extensive background in both television - with credits on popular shows like Doctors and Emmerdale - and pantomime productions across the UK.

“It’s a very traditional family panto with lots of silliness, water pistols and mayhem going on as well as a little bit of audience participation,” said theatre director Deborah Rees.

“Deborah has been a tireless advocate for opening up access to the arts for young people and families, ensuring Cast truly serves its whole community.”

Running alongside Cinderella, in the theatre’s second space, will be a production of Hansel & Gretel. Penned by Doncaster writer Nick Lane, this early years show is aimed at under sixes and will run for three weeks (5-25 December).

produced our own early years show at Christmas,” added Deborah. “Hopefully there’s something for all ages at Cast this Christmas.”

The festive season will be somewhat bittersweet for Deborah who will be stepping down from her role as director after nine years. This time of year is always a highlight for her and she sees it as a way of introducing people to the theatre that perhaps wouldn’t normally attend. It’s a challenge she has faced throughout her tenure.

Cast had been open for just three years when Deborah joined in 2016 and one of her main tasks was raising awareness and ultimate increasing audience numbers.

survey done that said Doncaster was the

seventh lowest borough in England for engagement in the arts,” she explained. “That really resonated. Part of my remit

engaging people who might not have been to the theatre before.”

Panto, as mentioned, is a great introduction to theatre and the arts but Deborah also wanted to make Cast a welcoming place to visit, whether you come to see a show, drop into the café bar or take part in one of the many creative workshops.

“A lot of our work has been exploring what the barriers are that stop people

attending,” said Deborah. “Creativity and culture are great ways to break down barriers and bring people together.”

One such recent example was an invitation to a Polish theatre company who came and performed in the square outside the theatre.

“We know we’ve got a big Polish population in Doncaster and wanted to showcase some of their very best theatre,” explained Deborah. “It was free to attend and we think about 20 per cent of the audience were Polish speaking.”

Those community-focused events have formed a big part of Deborah’s tenure.

Last

Partnerships with the National Theatre as well as the Royal Opera House and The Royal Ballet have allowed Cast to take the arts beyond the walls of the theatre and into schools and communities around the city.

This in turn led to the formation of the Doncaster People’s Theatre, a fantastic resource of people of who want to explore their creativity.

Programming has been a big part of Deborah responsibilities and she is proud to have been able to increase the number and types of shows on offer at Cast. Before stepping down, work has already started on planning the season in 2027 but she’s excited about what the early part of 2026 will bring.

“We’ve got a company called Imitating the Dog, who are regular visitors to Cast, doing a production of HG Wells’ War of the Worlds (5-7 February) and then in our second space we’re remounting Children of the Night (4-14 February). Written by Doncaster actor/writer Danny Phillips, it’s a story of nightclubbing in Doncaster in the nineties.

“We’ve got a John Godber company coming with an updated version of Teechers (10-14 March) and then for children we’ve got a week-long run of the Gruffalo (31 March-4 April).”

Deborah looks back fondly at her time at Cast and leaves a powerful legacy of partnerships, community engagement and artistic ambition that has helped to establish the theatre as a cultural cornerstone of Doncaster and a respected player on the national stage.

“Deborah has been an excellent leader, she has shown what’s possible when ambition meets collaboration,” said Elizabeth Jones, chair of the board at Cast. “Her belief in the transformative power of the arts, combined with her ability to form lasting partnerships and inspire those around her, has left a permanent mark on Cast and Doncaster.

“Deborah has also been a tireless advocate for opening up access to the arts for young people and families, ensuring Cast truly serves its whole community. On behalf of the Board, I thank her for

her passion, resilience and outstanding contribution to Cast and to Doncaster, and we wish her every success in her future endeavours.”

Speaking of her tenure, Deborah added: “I’m especially proud of the partnerships we’ve built and the extraordinary range of work we’ve produced - from intimate community projects to epic productions. None of it would have been possible without the incredible team at Cast, whose professionalism and dedication is second to none.

“I’m grateful to the artists and communities who have made Cast such a special place, and I now look forward to new freelance challenges and championing the arts in different ways.”

Cinderella opens at Cast in Doncaster on Friday 28 November 2025 and runs until Thursday 04 January 2026. Tickets start at just £15 and can be purchased online here on 01302 303959.

hatever your circumstances, facing sudden unemployment can be a life-changing moment.

Smart Works is a charity that exists to help women break the cycle of hardship that results from being unemployed. It helps women transition into employment by providing high-quality interview clothes and interview training, unlocking their

The need for Smart Works has never been greater. The legacy of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis has had a disproportionate impact on the women they exist to support. In the last year, 40 per cent of their clients had been unemployed for over a year, and 12 per cent had applied for over 100 jobs before coming to Smart

Smart Works harness the power of clothing and coaching to unlock the

foot forward at a crucial moment in her life, giving her the practical tools required to succeed at interview and transform her life.

Smart Works Leeds opened in November 2019, providing high quality interview clothing and advice to unemployed women across Yorkshire. Since then, the charity has supported more than 3,000 women with its tailored dressing and coaching service. Just over 1,000 of these women have been supported in the last year alone, and more than two thirds get the job within a month of accessing the Smart Works Leeds service.

Fran, from Leeds, had been unemployed for quite some time when Smart Works supported her with her return to abusive relationship.

A Smart Works staff member met Fran at a local women’s organisation, when she went to talk about Smart Works and to invite women to access the service. Fran accepted an invitation to visit the centre for some support to prepare her for an upcoming job interview.

Smart Works helped Fran pick a beautiful interview with a local charity. They also supported her with a coaching session tailored to the role she was applying for.

Fran was successful at interview. Once she got the job, she came back to the centre for a second dressing, where she picked out a capsule wardrobe to support her through

Fran said: “I didn’t know what to expect, but it was just brilliant. Smart Works really helped me. My appointment completely changed my perception of myself. I was able to present myself in a professional manner at the interview which helped me secure the role. My coach was so knowledgeable. She put questions to me that I was actually asked in the interview. I got loads of tips and invaluable advice. I was able to talk about my fears and this resolved a lot of my anxiety. Fran now focusses on reaching harder to help groups including single parents, care leavers, ethnic minority women and women from domestic violence and recovery backgrounds.

Smart Works Leeds estimates that there are thousands of women like Fran across support.

Now, as it prepares to enter a pivotal stage in its growth, Smart Works Leeds is itself looking for help and support. The charity, based in Mabgate Mills close to Leeds city centre, is hoping to move into a unit double the size of its current space. This new centre could accommodate up to 100 women a week, with four dressing and coaching rooms.

At peak times the current centre is fully booked. A new, larger centre would futureproof the Smart Works Leeds service, ensuring that it can meet local needs as its referral numbers continue to increase.

The new centre would improve

the accessibility of the service, with designated quiet space. The team could host more volunteers, interns and students to support the service.

Smart Works Leeds has ambitious plans to hold employability workshops in the new centre, where the team can offer group coaching to up to 12 women at a time. The charity also wants to launch a virtual dressing studio, so that centre staff can post clothing parcels out to women across Yorkshire who cannot access the service in person. Finally, it hopes to overhaul its wardrobe which is currently bursting at the seams. A new, larger centre would

empower Smart Works Leeds to achieve these goals and more.

You can help Smart Works Leeds to build its new home by making a contribution to its special appeal to raise £250,000. By making a donation, you will empower Smart Works Leeds to create a space where it can support women to grow in

futures. You will make a tangible difference to the lives of local women, helping to provide stability for the charity as it grows its services, and aims to support more than 1,000 women a year.

Dear Doctor

Meet Dr Salman (MBChB, BSc), an NHS doctor and Private GP at The Avenue Clinic.

Fatty liver disease: the silent threat you can reverse

atty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, is one of the most common liver conditions in the UK. It occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver, impairing its ability to function properly. While a small amount of fat is

liver cancer.

There are two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease, caused by excessive alcohol use, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is often linked to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and sedentary lifestyles.

Because it develops quietly, fatty liver disease is often called a silent condition. Some people have no symptoms until it becomes advanced. Fortunately, modern testing can help detect it early. Blood tests can reveal elevated liver enzymes, an early sign of liver stress, while an ultrasound scan can identify fat accumulation in the liver, both key tools in identifying the disease.

The encouraging news is that fatty liver disease is largely reversible. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, reducing any excess alcohol intake, can restore liver health and prevent progression to irreversible liver damage.

Your liver works tirelessly to protect you. A simple check-up today could protect it for life.

At The Avenue Clinic we offer specialised blood tests and ultrasound scans which can help.

For more information or to book an appointment, please contact the clinic – our staff are always happy to assist.

Stop the CLOCKS

Any time is a good time to visit the Clocktower Brasserie at Rudding Park, writes Richard Abbey.

ince purchasing what was Grade I listed Rudding House over 50 years ago, the Mackaness family have continued to move with the times, developing a luxury resort that encompasses a 90-bedroom hotel, restaurants, conference and event facilities, golf course and spa. Set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland, it is often considered one of the most beautiful hotels in Harrogate.

And there’s much more to come. Over the next 50 years, the family aim to replace and upgrade the gold club and health facilities, replace and upgrade family facilities, add outdoor tennis courts and a pavilion, and restore the wall garden.

The ultimate aim is to be Yorkshire’s

feel. After turning of the main road into the long driveway, you get the feel that you’re arriving at somewhere special. Walking up to the main part of the hotel from the car park, we passed a wedding party at the chapel before entering the hotel proper.

While it would have been lovely to experience the spa, golf course or hotel, the purpose of our visit was to sample the

Clocktower Brasserie, which has recently launched its new autumn menu.

The Harrogate destination also has two other restaurants – Horto and Fifty Two –

which offer differing dining experiences.

The brasserie sits at the heart of the hotel and incorporates a bar, restaurant, conservatory and, when the weather permits, a south-facing terrace and outdoor kitchen. Given the changing of the seasons, the latter had all been packed away for winter but, seated in the conservatory, we very much had the feeling of being almost outside. The

huge picture windows and a centrallyplaced olive tree, which dominates the contemporary space.

The brasserie serves an all-day menu, which is available 12-9pm Monday to Saturday. Given its nature, it covers a

broad range of dishes, from sharing boards and starters to pasta and salad dishes to main courses and grills.

We arrived intending to have a leisurely lunch and after seeking recommendations from our waiter, we started with Scottish queen scallops (£16), which had been covered in garlic butter and baked in a scallop shell. It was a visually appealing dish but tasted every bit as good with parmesan cheese adding a hint of saltiness.

My spiced parsnip soup (£9.50) arrived at the table in a jug with a separate bowl containing a coriander chutney and crispy parsnip crisps. Pouring over the thick

beautifully and had a real spice kick. As

We took further recommendations for main course and the beef cheek bourguignon (£25) was as rich and warming as you would perhaps expect. The tender meat paired perfectly with buttery mashed potato and a hint of parsley.

my choice of main dish; pumpkin and combination but one that worked so well with the handmade pasta, parmesan shavings and pine nuts. Crisp sage leaves added bursts of herby relish.

Glasses of Coral Do Mar Albarino (£10.50) and Les Argelieres Pinot Noir (£9.50) were the perfect accompaniments.

desserts. A sticky toffee pudding (£11) served with a butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream brought all the warmth of the season whilst a lemon tart (£11)

Americano (£4) coffee completed our lunchtime picture.

The Clocktower Brasserie is certainly an impressive location with food to match. Service was exemplary throughout and

received. But just like that, our lunchtime experience was over. We’ll save a visit to the spa, golf course or hotel for another occasion.

Rudding Park is already gearing up for the festive season and has range of offers to tempt diners, from festive lunches and afternoon tea to party nights and private dining. There are special menus for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day as well as New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
