Elevate everyday living

Habitat 10ft Christmas tree

Let’s be honest, we all overindulge over the festive season. It’s hard not to. There’s so much food, drinks, parties, gatherings… how can you say no?

But Christmas is not all about big heavy meals, sometimes those smaller bites, and smaller plates, can go a long way.

With this in mind, we have spoken to a trio of local pubs, restaurants and cooks seeking inspiration for smaller, buffet-style dishes that can be easily enjoyed at home.

Husband and wife duo Jack and Lucy Fitzgerald will be welcoming guests to the The Wheatsheaf Pub and Pantry, Bakewell over the Christmas period and as well as serving a full festive menu were happy to share some ideas for something smaller –and made for sharing.

Their Winter Warmer Board, with a baked Camembert at its centre, brings everything you love about this season to the table and is easy to prepare in advance.

“It’s a dish that invites conversation and slows the pace,” said head chef Jack. “Whether a starter to share, a light bite with a bottle of wine, it’s designed to bring people together, the heart of what The Wheatsheaf is all about.”

Lucy recommends a Chardonnay to complement the sharing platter or even a mulled wine as the spices and warmth from food feel.

“The buttery texture of lightly oaked Chardonnay complements the melted cheese and soft bread beautifully.”

The Psalter Hotel & Restaurant have gone full-on festive with a turkey-based cranberry and chestnut. The dish celebrates the warmth of winter with crisp, spiced fried turkey, a tangy-sweet cranberry ketchup, and a delicate topping of shaved chestnuts. A two-hour brine ensures succulence, while the gluten-free dredge brings a light, golden crunch touched with aromatic spice.

This dish embodies The Psalter’s festive

yet bright. The aromatic dredge, sweetsharp cranberry ketchup, and chestnut garnish together create a harmony of texture

unmistakably seasonal.

Leslie Buddington is the chef-owner of Six and a half and has created a beef cheek and a more elegant twist on a beef suet pie.

“The addition of cinnamon and star anise really lifts the dish and gives it a comforting festive feel,” said Leslie, who would recommend a full-bodied glass of red wine to go with the dish.

The roly poly can prepare this dish in advance and then reheat.

Forget about the HANGOVER

Travelling is a given for many of us this festive period, whether you’re visiting family, friends or just looking to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Christmas, and the run up to it, is a time alcoholic variety. And whether you’re the designated driver or someone who doesn’t like or partake in alcoholic drinks, this doesn’t mean you’re solely limited to soft ones.

With a growing generation of people that are foregoing alcohol, drinks manufacturers, especially in the alcohol industry, have had to get creative to meet an ever-changing market. Hence the rise in low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks.

you’ve noticed the growing shelf space in supermarkets for these alternative drinks. Wines in particular have come on leaps and whites to pinks and sparkling.

With this increase in non-alcoholic wines, we thought we’d put them to the test and so approached several leading supermarkets as well as some local suppliers for some samples. We sourced sparkling, with prices ranging from £2.99 to £14.

Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards 2025

Back-to-back WINNERS

The Peacock at Rowsley grabbed the headlines but with 26 awards in total, there was lots to celebrate at the Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards 2025, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, writes Richard Abbey.

This year’s Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, was all about the numbers. Over 225 people packed out Owlerton Events and Conferencing (OEC) as we gave out 26 awards to not just

The big year winner of the night was The Peacock at Rowsley who won Restaurant of the Year for the second year in a row, contributing to a total of three awards for the Longbow Group, who also won Best Sunday Lunch and Best Family Friendly.

The Beagrie Group also won two awards whilst McGilverays’ at The Wortley Arms racked up the votes in our Readers’ Choice category to walk away with that prize.

It was also a good night for a couple of new venues – both Six and a half and awards.

Held on Monday 27 October, the Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards has become an annual celebration of the great and good in the hospitality industry. This is the event at the OEC which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. Once again it was

well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

The kitchen served a wonderful fourcourse meal consisting of roasted red pepper and harissa soup, followed by a

prawn broth with chilli oil. For main course we tucked into thyme roasted chicken supreme, charred corn and baby

glazed chocolate torte.

When it came to the 2025 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.

Each of our 26 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and SallyAnne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Family VALUES

It may be under new ownership but Cutler’s Spice still offers the same high quality food and service, writes Richard Abbey.

The Great British pub, once the cornerstone of society, has undergone a tough time over the last decade or so with many disappearing from our towns and cities. In fact, it has been recently reported that in 2025 an estimated one pub is closing every day, which equates to approximately eight pubs per week being permanently demolished or converted for other uses.

the area of Gleadless Townend has seen Cutler’s Arms close. While the former was converted into apartments, the Cutler’s became an Indian restaurant at the start of the 2010s and was hugely popular, winning a host of awards.

Now there’s been a change with the previous owners, the Ullah family, retiring and Kazi Alam and Habib Rahman stepping in to give the former pub a new lease of life. Both have previous experience

many will recognise them from the likes of Prithi Raj and The Mogul Room.

An extensive refurbishment has given the Cutler’s a fresh look, with cream walls and seating bringing energy to a previously dark space. As a former pub, the restaurant is of a decent size with a spacious bar/ waiting area, two dining spaces and a private dining area for larger parties.

While Alam’s expertise lies in the kitchen, Habib is front of house running a well-drilled and attentive team who were happy to dispense recommendations.

After ordering drinks – a Cobra (£5.95 pint) for me and a Coca-Cola (£2.95) for my wife – we tucked into crips poppadoms (90p each) and an excellent pickle tray with seven choices. Fresh onion, raita, lime pickle and mango chutney were also complemented by tomato and chill, coriander and tamarind relishes. It made for a great start.

We followed these appetisers with three spicy Tandoori lamb chops (£7.50) and a King prawn chatt (£6.50).

For main course my wife couldn’t resist her go-to dish – a lamb karai (£11.90) –

with ever-so-tender lamb pieces.

I took recommendation from our waitress and opted for one of Cutler’s Spice’s speciality dishes, Bengal Tiger (£14.50). As the name suggests, there was

chicken and lamb tikka pieces cooked in a thick, spicy tomato-based sauce, layered with lightly spiced fried onions, peppers and jalapenos. The meat was cooked beautifully with a hint of smokiness while the sauce had plenty of kick, but not too much so.

We shared sides of pilau rice (£4.50) and a garlic and coriander naan (£5.20), the latter of which was perfect for mopping up that spicy Bengal sauce.

There may be a new team behind the restaurant but Cutler’s Spice remains very much family-oriented which translates into the warm service and wonderful food.

Planning Forward

As 2025 draws to a close and we look ahead to a new year, here are a few timely reminders from your local Independent financial advisers at Hamnett Wealth Management.

The Budget

The Budget is just around the corner and may bring new tax, pension, or investment measures. Headlines can be unsettling, and the rumour mill is already in full swing, but try to resist the temptation to react to the noise.

Plan based on facts, not speculation. Once the details are confirmed, adapt and adjust accordingly. Consider your own situation, how any changes may affect you, and reach out for advice. In an ever-changing and increasingly complex landscape, good advice matters more than ever.

End-of-tax-year planning

With the tax year ending on 5 April 2026, now is a smart time to review your Pensions, ISA allowances, charitable giving, and any opportunities to offset gains or losses. Don’t leave it to the last minute. A quick review now can highlight valuable planning opportunities you may not have considered.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Everyone on the team sends their warmest wishes. Here’s to a restful festive season, quality time with friends and family, and a fresh start in 2026.

Want to review your financial situation?

If you’d like to chat through your plans or see how upcoming changes might affect you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
