Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (played by Robert Redford in allegedly his last film role), who escaped San Quentin prison at the age of 70 and went right back to robbing banks. He’d spent most of his life going in and out of prison, but he just couldn’t stop doing what he loved. For him, it wasn’t about making a living – it was just about living, and his growing legend would confound the authorities and enchant the public.

Marius Petipa choreographed this sparkling ballet, based on Cervantes’s story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote, as a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique. Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet, his vibrant staging bringing together the whole Company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers.

Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour, set to music by Vivaldi and Bosso, is lit with rich colours suggestive of sunset. Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern uses a large dance ensemble and Górecki’s music from his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for a poignant and passionate reflection on migration. Between them, a premiere by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, created for The Royal Ballet, brings the contemporary truly up-to-date.
