Set in Victorian London, the musical depicts Sweeney

Todd’s murderous quest for justice and retribution aided and abetted by the outrageous ideas of the pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett. Directed by Paul Kerryson.

This amateur production will be performed by members of the local community. SWEENEY TODD runs from 30 July - 11 Auguts at the Curve, Leicester. Ticket Office: 0116 242 3595 Website and Online Booking: www.curveonline.co.uk

Hairspray $IBOHF JT JO UIF )BJS

TUES 2 – SAT 13 JULY West End and Broadway’s hit musical comedy HAIRSPRAY visits the Theatre Royal Nottingham from 2-13 July. The cast is lead by stage and screen star Mark Benton as larger than life Edna Turnblad, EastEnders’ Lucy Benjamin as scheming TV executive Velma Von Tussle and X Factor finalist Marcus Collins as too cool for school Seaweed Stubbs. They are joined by newcomer Freya Sutton as big-hearted, big-haired teen heroine Tracy Turnblad and original West End cast member Sandra Marvin, as Motormouth Maybelle. It’s 1962, the 50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion – dancing. She wins a spot on the local TV

dance programme, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetting hair-hopper like Tracy get her massively shy Mom out of the apartment, beat evil Amber to be crowned Miss Hairspray, integrate Corny’s show for good AND win the heart of local heartthrob Link Larkin, all without denting her super high ‘do’? If anyone can, Tracy can! HAIRSPRAY Tuesday 2 – Saturday 13 July Nottingham Theatre Royal Tickets: £45 - £19 plus concessions Website and online booking www.trch.co.uk Box Office: 0115 989 5555

His Dark Materials 3PZBM %FSOHBUFoT ZPVOH BDUPST TUBHF WEDS 10 - SAT 13 JULY Following acclaim for their production of Spring Awakening and success in the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, Royal & Derngate Youth Theatre bring an ambitious adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novel cycle His Dark Materials to the Royal stage from Wednesday 10 July to Saturday 13 July. The play follows the coming of age of two children, Will Parry and Lyra Belacqua, who are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds. During their quest, the two fugitives encounter witches, armoured polar bears, soul-eating spectres and rebellious angels, in a journey which they hope will take them to The Republic of Heaven.

Director Natalie Diddams. Nicholas Wright’s theatrical adaptation divides Philip Pullman’s epic Whitbread and Carnegie-winning novel trilogy into two parts. It was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 2003, with a cast including Niamh Cusack, Dominic Cooper, Timothy Dalton and Russell Tovey. Royal & Derngate’s production is set to be a multi-media theatrical feast, with a cast of 60 performers from the Youth Theatre’s Classic and Contemporary companies, and puppets designed by Nick Ash, whose work was seen in last summer’s interactive hit in the theatre’s Underground venue, The Dream Space. It will be directed by the Youth Theatre’s

Anything Goes %FTUJOZ TPNFUJNFT OFFET B MJUUMF IFMQ TUES 6 AUG - SUN 1 SEPT Cole Porter’s musical comedy has enchanted audiences for nearly 80 years and now comes to Kilworth House Theatre from August 6. Winner of three Tony Awards in 2011 including Best Revival of a Musical, ‘Anything Goes’, is about the lovers, liars and pranksters on a transatlantic cruise. Etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love. Sailing from New York to England, the S.S. American carries a rather unusual group of passengers - American debutante Hope Harcourt accompanied by her fiancé wealthy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and her mother Evangeline; nightclub

singer Reno Sweeney; Wall Street banker Elisha Witney and his stowaway assistant Billy Crocker and gangster Moonface Martin to name but a few! It turns out that Hope is Billy’s long-lost love and engaging the help of those on-board he pursues the girl of his dreams. Peppering this hilariously bumpy journey to true love are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including I Get a Kick out of You, It’s De-Lovely, You’re the Top, Friendship and of course, Anything Goes. ANYTHING GOES is at Kilworth House Theatre from August 6 to Sept 1. Tickets available from the Box office 01858 881939 and online at www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk

Part One of His Dark Materials can be seen on Wednesday 10 July at 7.30pm and Saturday 13 July at 2.30pm. Part Two is staged on Thursday 11 July at 7.30pm and Saturday 13 July at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced at £8 per performance or £12 for both parts, can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or visiting www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Mawkin 'PMLoT OFX XBWF FRIDAY 19 JULY Get set to experience Mawkin, one of brit-folks brightest new guns, when they perform live as part of The Castle’s Red Room series on Fri 19 July, 8pm. This blistering 5-piece band fuse folk, world, jazz, prog and rock; blending the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while still reigning all the verve and mystique of ancient folk music traditions from across the globe. Fresh off the back of the threetimes-BBC-Folk-Award nominated collaboration Mawkin:Causley, folk rebels Mawkin are now forging a bold new sound that strengthens their instrumental roots and embraces a new, exuberant exploration into the traditional folk canon from the British isles and beyond. The “unconditionally mighty” (Mojo) four-piece have augment-

ed their sound with the addition of long-time producer Lee Richardson on drums and percussion. It’ll also be the first time that Mawkin will be interpreting traditional songs with singing duties shared between the band; a brave new direction indeed! Expect the mesmerising guitar playing of David Delarre, the carnal beats of drummer and percussionist Lee Richardson; underpinning richly textured bass lines from Danny Crump. Add a

host of wild and emotive melodies from the frenetic fiddling fingers of James Delarre inter-playing with the virtuosic bellowing of Nick Cooke’s melodeon and you have Mawkin. Tickets for this evening of music are priced £10 and can be purchased by calling the Box Office on 01933 270 007 or online at www.thecastle.org.uk

F>F You first shot to fame when you won the Channel 4 series Musicality, which showcased your singing, dancing and acting – but which of those skills was your first love? <6 Singing was my first love; My Gran taught me to play the piano at an early age. I would spend hours making up tunes instead of practicing my scales (which I regret now). As I got older I started to sing whilst playing and my Dad would ‘gently’ call from the lounge “Don’t call us we’ll call you”. To be fair, I did have quite a loud voice. F>F

My time was taken up being a Primary School Teacher at St Saviours in Westgate-on-sea. It was only when I was handed the flyer for Musicality that my life changed. FRI 12 – MON 15 JULY Bravura performances from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are the main attraction in Steven Soderbergh’s glitzy chronicle of the secret, five-year affair between flamboyant Vegas showman Liberace and his young admirer Scott Thorson. Soderbergh sets the piano stool on fire with this torrid tale of sex, drugs and classical piano, based on Thorson’s 1988 memoir.

Kia Pro_Cee’d GT 0O TBMF JO UIF 6, GSPN +VMZ The most eagerly anticipated new model in Kia’s history, the high-performance three-door pro_cee’d GT, is to go on sale in the UK on 1 July priced from £19,995. Sitting atop the cee’d range, pro_cee’d GT is Kia’s most performance-orientated car and has been developed for an

enthusiastic driving experience whilst remaining practical, affordable and comfortable for everyday use. The pro_cee’d GT will be followed in early 2014 by a GT version of the five-door cee’d. Powered by a turbocharged version of Kia’s 1.6-litre directinjection petrol engine, the pro_cee’d GT guarantees scin-

tillating performance for a hot hatchback designed not to be the most powerful in class but with everyday usability and civility in mind. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 143mph. Re-tuned suspension ensures that the pro_cee’d GT is more than capable of handling its impressive power and torque outputs – increased damper rebound and compression rates, stiffer springs and bushes and a larger rear antiroll bar are joined by stylish 18-inch alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres. The steering has been tuned for a more direct and sporting feel and the Flex Steer function – which allows drivers to select from three levels of power assistance in other versions of the pro_cee’d – has been removed in the GT. The brakes – 300mm ventilated at the front and 262mm at the rear – are the largest of any fitted to the

cee’d range. The already sporty lines of the pro_cee’d have been embellished with performance-car additions which give the GT a unique look, and it is the same story for the high-quality interior. Two trim lines – ‘GT’ and ‘GT Tech’ – are being offered, both extensively equipped in typical Kia fashion. But to mark Kia’s entry into the world of performance hatchbacks there is also a limited-production launch model, the ‘GT 1st Edition’. Just 500 examples of this special car are being produced, with only 50 earmarked for the UK. MAX SPEED: 143 mph 0-60 mph: 7.4 secs COMBINED MPG: 51.4 ENGINE: 1.6T-GDi MAX.
