Being Tommy Cooper +VTU MJLF UIBU This powerful, provocative, painfully funny and true play celebrates the brilliance in Britain’s most famous comic and explores the pressures and loneliness of fame. Las Vegas, 1954. In a small hotel room the up-and-coming Tommy Cooper faces the prospect of his first big failure. With the show closing and a warring relationship with his manager, Tommy finds an offer on the table and a drink in his hand. Being Tommy Cooper is a confrontational new play where the man who could make you laugh just by walking on to stage comes vividly alive. Tommy Cooper is one of Britain’s best-loved comedians. After his television debut on the BBC in 1948, Tommy went on to star in many variety shows in a career that spanned four decades, most notably on London Weekend Television from 1968 to 1972 and on Thames Television from 1973

Dancing At Lughnasa " UBTUF PG SVSBM *SFMBOE PO TUBHF UNTIL SAT 15 JUNE Set in rural Donegal in 1936, at a time when life was simple but making ends meet seems impossibly hard, the play follows the five Mundy sisters as they laugh, cry and dance together. During the course of a summer when their missionary brother returns from Africa a frail

and changed man, relationships are tested, social conventions challenged and the doctrines of the church clash with the spirit of a Pagan past. Dreams of love crumble as dusk sets on the life the sisters knew. Told through the eyes of seven-year old Michael, the illegitimate son of one of the sisters,

this is a magical, moving, memory-story filled with humour, tenderness and the longing of unfulfilled lives.

The Pitmen Painters " DMBTT BDU

MON 10 – SAT 15 JUNE Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre, on Broadway and in the West End, Bill Kenwright presents the award winning play The Pitmen Painters, which comes

to Leicester’s Curve theatre from 10 – 15 June, 2013. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most

avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous,

deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. Lee Hall wrote the screenplay for Billy Elliot and adapted it for the West End in 2005, winning an Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Billy Elliot opened on Broadway in November 2008. His plays also include Spoonface Steinberg (Ambassadors), Cooking with Elvis (Live Theatre, Assembly Rooms and West End), and an adaptation of Herman Heijerman’s The Good Hope for the NT.

MON 24 - SAT 29 JUNE Miss Matilda Jenkyns requests the pleasure of your company to meet The Ladies of Cranford. Based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell, the play faithfully portrays the ladies as seen through the author’s eyes. Living in an era of rapid change, Mrs Gaskell decided to write down her memories of the stalwart, eccentric women of her youth. They were independent ladies, running their own lives, often silly, sometimes stubborn and full of an unconscious humour. So, laugh with the ladies, share

their sorrows – and meet two of the few Gentlemen of Cranford. CRANFORD is at The Little Theatre, Dover Street, Leicester, LE1 6PW Email: admin@lds-mail.net Box Office: 0116 255 1302

Canterbury... with a Twist in the Tales! #BDL CZ QPQVMBS EFNBOE n5IFBUSF JO UIF (BSEFOo BU 5IF 0BUIJMM FRI 21 & SAT 22 JUNE Following the sell-out success of last year’s one-act plays by Alan Ayckbourne, Ellen Goddard’s e.g. Productions theatre company are set to return to the Oathill Bar and Restaurant in Market Harborough, this time to star in a special ‘dinner theatre’ adaptation of Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’. The audience will experience an evening of laughter and delight, eating ‘al fresco’ while being charmed with ‘The Knight’s Tale’, ‘The Miller’s Tale’ and ‘The Nun’s Priest Tale’. “We decided on ‘The Canterbury Tales’ as they are universal and most people will know the stories already,” explained Ellen, “and they also work as bite-size portions in between the meal courses.” Ian Scott from The Oathill was one of the sponsors for e.g. Productions’ first show at Harborough Theatre, and then contacted Ellen last year with the idea of ‘Theatre in the Garden’. “The Oathill garden is a fantastic space and has the potential to be transformed into

anywhere,” says Ellen. “The format we decided on was a three-course meal with theatre entertainment. Three one-act plays from Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Confusions’ worked perfectly as palate cleansers between courses, so we’re keeping the same format this year, with a cast of four. “We performed over two evenings to sold-out audiences both nights. The feedback was

30=24 WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE DANCE, CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY

Ballet Associates Auditions 8JUI (SBIBN 'MFUDIFS SUNDAY 01 SEPT Last year classical Ballet training took a brand new direction in Leicestershire and the Midlands area with the launch of Graham Fletcher Ballet Associates, aimed at nurturing boy and girl dance students in pursuit of excellence and reaching their full potential. The first year’s course has proved to be a real success, not just in the Leicestershire region but also further afield as, since opening, students have traveled to monthly Ballet Associates classes from the North West, Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Nottingham and Derbyshire. Director and former Royal Ballet principal dancer Graham Fletcher has a long history of achievement with young and talented children and this led

6

to the creation of his Ballet Associates programme. This year he is delighted with the success of a number of his students as no less than eleven of his students have been accepted at either The Royal Ballet School, Royal Ballet Senior and Junior Associates, Elmhurst, Tring, Hammond or English National Ballet School. Graham says ‘I am really impressed with how my Associates have improved and developed from when we started last year. Being able to concentrate and work hard over the course of two hours intensive Associates ballet class can be quite a challenge, especially for the younger students! So, at the top of my list is giving my students confidence in their ability and

to experience ballet training in a different way’. Graham has been promoting dance in Leicestershire since 1998 with his original Dance Activate Scheme. This initiative has opened the doors to thousands of children by giving them a chance to dance, especially those who may not have the opportunity. The creation of his Ballet Associates programme has now proved to be the natural next step for those with ambitions to follow a career in ballet or dance. It has offered the chance for students to develop their potential further by training at a more intensive level, and importantly, with other like-minded students from other regions and schools. In March 2014 Ballet Associate students will be

presented in a specially choreographed work at Graham’s Big Dance Activate 2014 production at De Montfort Hall in Leicester Auditions for a limited number of places available on the 2013 - 2014 Ballet Associates course will be on Sunday 1 September at Studio 79 in Leicester. Aspiring dancers will take part in an Associates level classical ballet audition class, and have the chance to join a special ballet repertoire workshop. For further information and an application form please see www.balletassociates.co.uk or contact Graham Fletcher on 0771 772 1916 or email at grahamfletcher001@btinternet. com.

Renowned for their energetic live show, longevity has not diminished the Levellers’ ability to put in a performance and get everyone in a room, or field, dancing. Heralded as their most accomplished album to date, the band released new studio album Static On The Airwaves in 2012. Produced by Sean Lakeman, who is renowned for producing his brother’s Mercury-nominated and goldselling albums as well as

Letters From The Underground (Levellers’ previous album), Static On The Airwaves was recorded ‘as live’ at Sono Studios in Prague. Brighton folk-rockers Levellers have long been and still are, one of the best live bands around. But, often overlooked is their impressive back catalogue of recorded music. The Levellers sold more platinum, gold, and silver albums in the 1990s than any other act. 5 of their 6 Top 40 albums (which spawned 14 Top 40 singles), including the number 1 Zeitgeist, were recently re-released. Their platinum-selling 1991 album Levelling The Land is

Weldonfest 4FWFOUI )FBWFO SATURDAY 22 JUNE Weldonfest are pleased to announce their seventh music and arts festival on Saturday 22nd June, 2013 at Corby Rugby Club. Bigger and better than before and with an expected crowd of 5000 people, the not-forprofit event has invested in professional staging, lighting and music-marquees to give the yearly festival a more robust operational platform due to the 2012 weather. For 2013, there will also be a brand new “15 minutes... (of fame)” music tent to give younger and newer acts a foothold in the festival. “Due to the appalling weather leading up to WF ’12, it was touch and go as to whether the event actually happened.

Thanks to the Police and a few others, we were able to replan the event in the 36 hours before the start time. We’ve taken those lessons on board and although our costs have gone up, we feel confident that we will be able to better cope with those same conditions again.”, said a Weldonfest spokesperson. With over 60 mainly local acts appearing across a Main Stage, an Acoustic, Dance and IMP (Indie, Metal & Punk) Music Tents, Weldonfest is also bringing out of town headliners to each music area with THE MODERATORS, EL CAMINO & THE CROOKED EMPIRE closing each area respectively. The ever-present Children’s/ Kids Tent will be larger and again allow for families and

children to create, build, play and have fun in a safe and regulated environment. Tickets will go on sale from Tuesday 2nd April, 2013 from several outlets in Corby and online. Brian May and Kerry Ellis 5IF #PSO 'SFF 5PVS FRIDAY 21 JUNE Brian and Kerry’s much-requested return to the stage offers a rare opportunity to witness one of the world’s greatest ever guitar players performing in an intimate setting, paired with the unique voice of the West End’s First Lady of Song. It all adds up to a magical evening, staged in aid of the Born Free Foundation. The Born Free Tour promises an exceptional programme of acoustic music performed by candlelight, including stripped-down versions of Queen classics alongside a number of Brian and Kerry’s personal favourites, showcasing Kerry’s extraordinary voice with Brian accompanying her on both guitar and vocals.

Kerry Ellis created the role of Meat in Queen’s rock theatrical, We Will Rock You, and went on to become a sensation on both sides of the Atlantic as the Green Witch in the musical Wicked. Throughout this time, she maintained a special musical partnership with Brian, who produced her debut album in 2010. They have performed together to wide acclaim on a number of occasions over the last few years, including the Royal Variety Show, BBC Proms in the Park and the Remembrance Day Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Born Free is a global organisation which works to protect and conserve threatened species, particularly Africa’s magnificent lions which are now in

serious decline across much the continent. Kerry and Brian were moved to support the work of the Foundation after a visit to the Shamwari game reserve and rescue centre in South Africa.

The Born Free Tour comes to Royal & Derngate at 8pm on Friday 21 June. Tickets are priced at £39, and can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or visiting www.royalandderngate.co.uk

9Pi 2^g Leicester’s Curve Young Company are performing Shakespeare’s The Tempest in June - WOW speaks to Jaz Cox about his role as Prospero F>F Your first experience of Shakespeare was in The Winter’s Tale at the age of 9. Tell us a bit about that. 90I It was amazing. Looking back now I can still remember it so vividly. I had the part of Mamillius, son of Leontes. I was lucky enough to get scouted at a drama festival where I was performing a poem by Pam Ayres about hedgehogs. I’m pretty sure that the only reason I originally got the invite to the audition was because when I messed up on stage, I handled it so well. It turned out that the scout was working for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and I auditioned, and landed the role. I remember I had to do a massive magic act as the opening scene to the play. It was such an honour to have that much responsibility on stage, especially with such a highly renowned company, and at such a young age. Thinking back, I remember

even at that age, I just knew that acting was what I wanted to do. F>F In The Winter’s Tale you were described as ‘a director’s dream’… have you any long term plans to get involved in direction yourself? 90I I’ve done some directing myself, and it’s extremely hard work. I honestly can’t foresee now where life will take me, but as it stands, I’m not looking to direct anything in the near future. I enjoy acting so much more, so for now, I’m just going to put all my efforts into that. Whether it’s on stage, on screen or maybe even radio work. Acting is where my heart lies.

One of the challenging aspects was catering to the Chinese culture, there was a list of songs we couldn’t sing because they were deemed too controversial, and various other restrictions. I really did love it though, and if I got a chance to do it again, I would jump on it. F>F You can act, sing and dance, have you any plans to perform in musical theatre?

F>F How did you get to become part of the Curve Young Company? 90I I applied three years back, when it first started up, and have been a part of it since. We’ve done two devised plays, ‘3am’ and ‘Gameface’, but this year we get to have a shot at Shakespeare’s Tempest, we’ve had several directors, and they’ve all been great, but this year Tim Ford has taken everything that next step up, and not only have I enjoyed working with him, but I’m really impressed with what he’s done.

Last year over £3,000 was donated

to a variety of local charities. The Show will have many main ring displays including terrier racing, classic and vintage

tractors and show jumping. The many other attractions across the Showground will include children’s fair rides, trade stands, rural crafts, tug of war, a licensed bar and food outlets, a modern farming display, dog showing and hound showing. There will be many equine events including Equifest and BSPA qualifiers for hunters, cobs, riding, coloured horses and ponies, and mountain and moorland ponies. This year will be the third year with a full range of cattle showing classes and the usual sheep showing will also be present. For the second year in a row, the day will start with a classic car rally over a 30 mile radius ending up at the showground in time for the entrants to take part in the classic car judging. This was well supported last year and the Show’s organisers hope for the same again this year. The Society’s Chairman, John Stones commented “Blaston Show is always a very special day out, we are all looking forward to this year’s show on Sunday June 30th and hope for better weather than last year when, despite the showers, we went ahead, one of the few shows in the area to keep going last year. We were thrilled to give over £3,500 to our chosen charities in 2012 and hope to raise even more for Riding for Disabled, local charities and organisations this year. With our usual eques-

trian and livestock competitions, classic tractors and cars, an enhanced modern farming section and a great selection of retail stands, there is something for everyone to enjoy in a truly beautiful setting in the Welland Valley”.

The 56th Show will once again take place on the temporary Blaston Road showground, near Slawston in Leicestershire. The cost of entry to the show has been frozen at just £10 per car.
