MON 13 - SAT 18 MAY After being a West End hit in 2010, an exciting, new adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ acclaimed novel Birdsong comes to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate, from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 May, as part of its very first tour. A dynamic cast of 12 shape Faulks’ much loved wartime epic into an intimate story of love and sacrifice, set against the backdrop of the Western Front. In pre-war France, young Englishman Stephen Wraysford embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with his host’s wife, Isabelle Azaire. As civil unrest mounts and war breaks in on the idyll of his former life,

Stephen finds he must now lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and the sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground. Faced with unprecedented horror, the warhardened Stephen clings to the shrinking memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him. Birdsong was ranked 13th in the 2003 BBC survey The Big Read, finding the nation’s favourite book. The novel was adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff and opened at the Comedy Theatre, London in 2010, and more recently was adapted for TV by Abi Morgan for a BBC 1 series (January 2012). This vivid and ambitious new production

follows the launch of Sebastian Faulks’ latest novel A Possible Life. Faulks has recently been invited to sit on the advisory board for a historic commemoration ceremony of the centenary of the start of World War I, to be held on Remembrance Day, 2014. BIRDSONG takes to the Royal stage from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 May at 7.4 5pm nightly, with matinees at 2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets – priced from £9.50 to £25.50 Box Office 01604 624811 www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

During the course of a summer when their missionary brother returns from Africa a frail and changed man, relationships are tested, social conventions challenged and the doctrines of the church clash with the spirit of a Pagan past. A Midsummer Night’s Dream 4MJQ JOUP B XPSME PG FODIBOUNFOU BOE NJTDIJFG JO 4IBLFTQFBSFoT CFTU MPWFE DPNFEZ UNTIL SAT 11 MAY Perfect both as an introduction to Shakespeare and for seasoned Shakespeare audiences, A Midsummer Night’s Dream offers a feast of humour and magic. This new production sets the action in Edwardian England, but mischief is afoot and the usual divides of upstairs/ downstairs have been turned upside down. Worlds real and unreal collide, passion and madness erupt, love and magic work their potent charms and love at first sight proves real for some but makes an ass of others. Under the thrilling and energetic direction of Gary Sefton (who directed A Christmas Carol,

Diary Of A Nobody and Travels With My Aunt for Northampton’s Royal & Derngate) the winning combination of Shakespeare’s lyrical text and some of his funniest characters make this rich, vivid production a real treat for all ages. Taking the role of the fairy queen Titania is Amy Robbins, best-known as Dr Jill Weatherill in ITV series The Royal and fresh from starring in the West End as Mrs Johnston in Blood Brothers. Playing the mischievous Puck is Colin Ryan, from CBBC’s Leonardo, and Joseph Alessi, last seen on the Royal stage in the hugely successful

Brief Encounter, plays the part of Bottom. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Royal & Derngate 19 April to 11 May. Box Office on 01604 624811 www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

The Woman In Black 1SFQBSF UP CF BGSBJE MON 27 MAY – SAT 1 JUN Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep. First performed at the Theatre-By-The-Sea in Scarborough in 1987 to rave reviews, the show opened in the West End in 1989 where it has enjoyed

continued success ever since and has also seen numerous national tours. The production’s huge popularity has reached a global level, having spread to the United States, South America and Tokyo. Now in its 23rd year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most terrifying and successful theatre events ever staged. Susan Hill’s novel The Woman in Black has reached an even

wider audience this year with the release of a major motion picture, starring Daniel Radcliffe (‘Harry Potter’), which has successfully become the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years. THE WOMAN IN BLACK will be at the Curve, Leicester 27 May – 1 Jun. Box Office: 0116 242 3595 www.curveonline.co.uk

FRIDAY 10 MAY New Model Army, the legendary global underground cult band formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980 as a three piece, return to active duty ahead of the release of their twelfth studio album later this year, with a short run of UK and European shows. Since marking their 30th anniversary at the end of 2010 with multiple retrospective releases and an ambitious series of twonight stands in cities across four continents, the band have endured a series of misfortunes including the loss of almost all their equipment and archives in a studio fire at the end of 2011. However instead of this being a

burden, the band have used the aftermath of the fire to approach the making of a new record with a completely new approach. The result is an ambitious album markedly different musically from it’s predecessors. The Self-produced set has been mixed by the in-demand producer of the moment, Joe Barresi, (best known for his extensive work with Tool, Queens Of The Stoneage, Bad Religion and Soundgarden.) A feature-film documentary on the history of the band is also currently being finished by Royal Televison Society award winning director Matt Reid for release in independent cinemas this Autumn to coincide

Northampton audiences will be treated to Jones’ swinging renditions of contemporary pop and rock, as well as classic standards and special tributes to his friends Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mel TormÊ and Andy Williams. Jack Jones enjoyed success with his first single, 1962’s Grammy-winning Lollipops and Roses, recently heard on the hit television drama Mad Men. The following year his rendition of Bacharach and David’s Wives and Lovers made the Top

Ten, and won him his second Grammy in 1964. His wit, elegance and sophistication set him apart from other young vocalists of the 1960s, and led Frank Sinatra to call him, “One of the major singers of our time. Acting roles on film and television, a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, television specials and guest performances at the White House followed, as he scored more hits including The Race Is On and The Impossible Dream. Thirty years ago, on April 4 1983, Jones performed the inaugural concert in the newly-built Derngate to a sell-out audience. Coming full circle, 2013’s Farewell Concert will include a special video presentation of Jack and

From Madness to gladness 4VHHT UFMMT IJT TUPSZ Madness frontman Suggs brings his hilarious and moving one man tour de force My Life Story to The Core at Corby Cube on Wednesday 24 April. As he turns fifty, a loud crash in the singer’s bathroom heralds the sudden death of his beloved cat. This tragedy propels him on a reflective journey through his own highs and lows, and triggers a personal quest to discover what happened to the father he never knew. Accompanied by a lone pianist, Suggs combines narrative, anecdote and song to reveal his life story in an uproarious – and at times deeply affecting – stand-up memoir. He recalls his tough childhood on the mean streets of Soho in the days of platform boots, tank tops, cheesecloth

and most celebrated anthems. Their inventive music and lyrics, heard anew in the context in which they were written, often become unexpectedly poignant, as Suggs stumbles and plummets through the trap door of failure, before bouncing back to catch the passing trapeze of show business success. and big hair; his sudden fame at the age of eighteen as lead singer of Madness and the sudden collapse of the band just a few years later. With a wife and two small children to support he determines to rebuild his career through music production, solo albums, television, theatre, film and radio – despite numerous hilarious setbacks. <PaZ 8]bR^T One of musical theatre’s most versatile performers, Mark Inscoe takes time out of rehersals at Kilworth House Theatre to talk to WOW’s Derek Hammond.

8

n June and July, Mark Inscoe stars in My Fair Lady – “the perfect musical” – at Kilworth House Theatre, which was described by the Telegraph as “a total delight – perhaps the best-kept secret in British theatre”.. F>F In June and July, you’re stepping into the shoes of Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, which has been called ‘the perfect musical’. You must be looking forward to performing the wonderful songs in the production, which features so many popular classics? <0A: I have to say that this is my dream role! It’s a character that must be handled delicately. Higgins comes across as a real bully and chauvinist but one mustn’t alienate the audience – they need to be able to understand why he is like he is, so that they empathise and actually like him by the end of the play. F>F You’ve played many of the great lead roles in musical theatre, but which of those productions and characters stick in your mind as your personal favourites? <0A: One of the joys of acting is being able to play such varied characters – I’ve loved playing Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and more recently Hugh Dorsey in the critically acclaimed Parade at the Southwark Playhouse. But one of the highlights of my career to date was playing Baron Von Geigern in Grand Hotel at the Dominion Theatre in 1995. An extraordinarily sophisticated piece of theatre directed by the legend of Broadway, Tommy Tune.

F>F As well as acting in musical theatre, you’ve developed an alter ego performing as Dean Martin. It must be fun being Dino, the coolest cat in cabaret! <0A: As a child I grew up listening to the music of the Ratpack and fortunately my experience as a cabaret singer on the cruise ships helped my portrayal of Dean Martin. So I’ve been lucky enough to sing the Dino repertoire for the past 7 years including a stint in the West End in The Ratpack, Live From Las Vegas. Performing in a cabaret environment requires a totally different approach that acting in a play or book musical. Some actors are uncomfortable making eye contact with an audience and like to maintain the ‘third wall’. F>F My Fair Lady of course centres around your conversion of Eliza Doolittle from cockney flower girl to duchess. Coincidentally, you’re also something of a master of accents as an actor... <0A: Well, I wouldn’t say ‘a master’ of accents, I have a good ear and I have been lucky to work with some great dialect coaches. I have had to use various accents including French as Lumiere, Italian as Vitorio Vidal in Sweet Charity and more recently a slightly sophisticated Melbourne ‘Aussie’ accent in my portrayal of Bernadette in Priscilla, Queen of The Desert. I love the challenge of using more specific American regional accents – for example, a Chicago accent in Proof and an Atlanta accent in Parade. F>F Looking back over your illustrious

past record of productions, it strikes us that you must hardly have any time to spend at home. Do you enjoy the actor’s life, forever out on the road? <0A: I do enjoy travelling and I have been fortunate enough to work all over the world. But the older I get the more I like to be within commuting distance of home! F>F Did you always have ambitions to perform, or did you somehow slip into it? It hasn’t escaped our notice that your qualifications include a degree in geology! <0A: For as long as I remember I had an interest in earth sciences – one of my early heroes was Jacques Cousteau, so I was torn between marine biology and geology. I have a passion for volcanoes (strange boy!) so geology won. I’d done a few amateur shows, mainly G&S, as a teenager but once I got to Exeter University I quickly discovered the magic of the stage at the Northcott Theatre; at the time one of the best repertory theatres in the UK. That confirmed the direction I was going to take once I had graduated. F>F You’ve never played Henry Higgins on stage before. Are there any other great roles which you would one day especially like to play or sing? <0A: I am finding the older I get the more interesting the roles are becoming. I am now the right age to play Higgins and someday I will be old enough to play ‘Sir’ in The Dresser – one of my favourite plays. I played Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd for the 20th Anniversary but would love to play Sweeney Todd himself. F>F What would you do if you were invisible for a day? <0A:

Hmm... Difficult question….. If I could occasionally slip Tolkein’s ring onto my finger I would take a look over the shoulder of some of the Directors I’ve auditioned for, to see what notes they are writing about me. Paranoid? Me? Just typical actor’s self doubt!

FRI 31 MAY – THUR 06 JUNE From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) comes the new, big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. Would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, partygiving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgarton). Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. In April 2012 Andrew joined Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week as a regular, whilst his self-written and performed radio show What To Do If You’re Not Like Everybody Else

TUESDAY 14 MAY A ‘set list’ contains written words that comedians use to remind them of which jokes they will do. But what if someone else wrote them an outrageous set list and they had to create comedy on the spot? Top comedians are given original and deranged topics with literally zero seconds to prepare, performing seamlessly as if it’s the act they normally do. See the mental wheels turning in this playground for the comedy mind. Soon to be a Sky Atlantic TV series & Now an ABC2 TV series (Australia).

SET LIST; STANDUP WITHOUT A NET (Tony Law, Henning Wehn, Andrew Maxwell, Paul Foot & Mitch Benn). Tues 14th May. Just the Tonic. 0116 2625050 www.justthetonic.com

Irrepressible geezer Lee Nelson is the loveable, dim-witted alter ego of comedian and former doctor Simon Brodkin, whose other creations, including idiotic Premiership footballer Jason Bent and bungling medic Dr Bob, will be along for the fun. When Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show first hit screens in 2010, its star’s eager interaction

with the audience made it an instant success. The Times described it as having, ‘the raucous energy of an Ann Summers party, in a good way’. Brodkin was arrested in character as Lee Nelson last year, as he attempted to ‘steal’ one of his own DVDs from a shop in London. He courted publicity with another prank in March of this year by

running onto the pitch as Jason Bent at Goodison Park during the warm-up for the Everton vs. Manchester City Premier League football match. Following his latest hilarious television series, Lee Nelson’s Well Funny People, audiences can expect plenty of participation, “qualitee jokes, games and banter from his live tour.

Widdicombe and Walsh 8JU BOE XIJNTZ BU 5IF $PSF THURSDAY 09 MAY Two of the finest young comedians in the country, Josh Widdicombe and Seann Walsh come to The Core at Corby Cube for a side-splitting standup double bill. Josh’s upbringing in a tiny Devon village didn’t prepare him for the realities of life – but it helped the star of Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week

and Last Leg to write sparkling observational comedy with a touch of trademark pedantry. He made his stand-up debut in 2008, reaching the final of So You Think You’re Funny at the Edinburgh Fringe in the same year. Named FHM Stand Up Hero, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, and nominated Best Newcomer at Edinburgh Comedy Awards, Josh really ought to relax. Charming and charismatic, natural motor-mouth Seann Walsh is the most frighteningly precocious talent to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in ages. His own haul of accolades includes the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, which Seann won after just two years of stand-up. Time Out has him down as ‘This generation’s

Reginald D Hunter *O 5IF .JETU 0G $SBDLFST Following two previous sell-out tours of the UK, a total sellout season at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the release of his debut stand up DVD, Reginald D Hunter Live, Reginald will be setting out to tour the country again in 2013 with his own unique blend of humour in a brand new show, Reginald D Hunter – In The Midst Of Crackers. In just over a decade since he began performing, Reginald D Hunter has become one of the UK Comedy industry’s bestknown and most distinctive performers. His work is often brutally honest, frequently controversial but always meticulously measured and thought out.
