UNTIL SAT 16 MARCH Known to all as ‘Piaf’, the sparrow who rose from the streets of Paris to the international stage, French chanteuse Edith Gassion’s life and career is as unique as her extraordinary singing voice. Her music, a reflection of her life itself, passionately retells the love, loss and sorrow she experienced, and the fierce emotion and heartache she endured until her untimely death 50 years ago. Directed by Curve Artistic Director, Paul Kerryson, this new production will feature some of

Piaf’s greatest songs, such as La Vie en Rose, Hymne à l’amour and Non Je Ne Regrette Rien. This gripping, powerful story, which contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature, will take you on a journey that explores the triumphs and tragedy that accompanied Piaf’s rise to fame and the intense scrutiny and struggle that came with it. Tony Award-winning actress Frances Ruffelle will play the iconic title role. Since bursting into public consciousness playing the role of Eponine in the original West End and Broadway productions of Les Misera-

bles, and most recently starring in the Oscar-nominated film, Ruffelle has continued to captivate audiences and prove herself as a leading name in British theatre. Cast also includes Laura Pitt-Pulford, Dale Rapley and Jason Denton, who all recently appeared at Curve in Hello, Dolly!, Stephen Webb and Oliver Boot (Finding Neverland), Sean Dodds (Oliver!), Tiffany Graves and Russell Morton. Frances Ruffelle stars in PIAF at Leicester’s Curve until 16 March. Ticket Office on 0116 242 3595 www.curveonline.co.uk

Mr Whatnot

CELEBRATE: Queens Park Symphonia Church of St James the Greater, Leicester

"ZDLCPVSO "OOJWFSTBSZ $PNFEZ (PME FRI 15 MARCH - SAT 6 APRIL Continuing its Comedy Gold season, Royal & Derngate presents the 50th anniversary production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Mr Whatnot, a wonderfully silly tale of havoc and mayhem which can be seen from Friday 15 March to Saturday 6 April. Alan Ayckbourn is one of the country’s most loved and prolific playwrights, and following on from its the success of its Ayckbourn At 70 Season in 2009, Royal & Derngate is delighted to stage Mr Whatnot. This side-splitting play – Ayckbourn’s first to transfer to the West End – combines a tribute to the physical comedy of the silent movie era with the very British obsessions with class, cucumber sandwiches and bed-hopping.

In this hilarious fish-outof-water tale, a naĂŻve but highly imaginative piano tuner is summoned to the stately home of Lord and Lady Slingsby-Craddock. A case of mistaken identity leads to an increasingly surreal series of encounters over a summer weekend of tennis matches and afternoon tea, as Mr Whatnot attempts to win the affections of their debutante daughter Amanda. Think Mr Bean goes to Downton. Mr Whatnot is directed by the brilliant Cal McCrystal, physical comedy director for the award-winning National Theatre production, One Man, Two Guvnors. Cal is also a longterm collaborator with Spymon-

The Miser nB SPMMJDLJOH 'SFODI GBSDF o MON 18 - SAT 23 MARCH The varied repertoire of plays offered by Leicester’s Little Theatre continues with Moliere’s brilliant farce adapted by Miles Malleson. The plot revolves around Harpagon, a penny pinching money lender who rules his household with a miserly grip. His rebellious children are scared to inform him of their romantic entanglements not knowing he has secret marital plans of his own. Harpagon’s treasure is stolen and everyone is a suspect from family, servants and even the audience! As usual with farce, there are the hilarious misunderstandings and ridiculous revelations but true love triumphs and Harpagon, a reformed character, is reunited with his gold.

Accomplished director Roy Smith and his experienced cast bring this period comedic classic to life at Dover Street’s Little Theatre from Monday 18th until Saturday 23rd March. Details from the Box Office: 0116 2551302 Online booking: www.thelittletheatre.net

MON 18 - SAT 23 MARCH Agatha Christie’s classic thriller The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – and with almost 25,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. Joe Brown ,JOH PG UIF 6LVMFMF FRIDAY 29 MARCH Joe Brown always puts on a good show. In fact it’s true to say it’s a terrific show. His live

band is second to none and his own musicianship is beyond doubt. He plays guitar, mandolin,

fiddle and ukulele. With an acoustic set and a rousing electric one, he covers the 50+ years of his career bringing it bang up to date with the ukulele songs featured on his current CD “The Ukulele Album”. The ukulele has been an instrument Joe has always loved and played. In 1963 it even got him into trouble. Joe was one of the very first artists to have a record banned by the BBC - his recording of the old George Formby song ‘With My Little Ukulele In My Hand’ was deemed way too risqué.

Solid Silver 60s 0SJHJOBM TUBST PG n T QPQ DPNF UP 3PZBM %FSOHBUF THURSDAY 14 MARCH Relive the swinging sounds of a magical decade on Thursday 14 March, when the Solid Silver 60s tour comes to town, featuring Mike Pender, Dave Berry and Wayne Fontana, all backed by the New Amen Corner, with special guest stars The Merseybeats. The original voice of Merseybeat giants The Searchers, Mike Pender played on the same Liverpool circuit as The Beatles, honing his chops in Hamburg’s infamous Star Club. His chiming 12-string Rickenbacker guitar was one of the most distinctive sounds of the sixties, heard on hits like Sweets For My Sweet, Sugar and Spice, Needles and Pins and Don’t Throw Your Love Away. Dave Berry may be best remembered for the haunting

ballad The Crying Game, but he showed his range on the magnificently raucous B-side Don’t Gimme No Lip Child, featuring a pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page on guitar, and later covered by the Sex Pistols. His dark, unconventional and stylish stage presence inspired other punk musicians including Siouxsie and Adam Ant, who invited Berry to support him at several shows. More recently, fellow Sheffield boy Richard Hawley has paid tribute to Dave, cementing his status as a British music legend. Wayne Fontana’s first big hit came in the autumn of 1964 with Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, recorded with his band The Mindbenders. Another top ten record, Game Of Love followed in 1965, the year he parted company from the Mindbenders. As

a solo performer, Wayne went on to find success with subsequent singles Come on Home and Pamela, Pamela. Former sidemen to the likes of Screaming Lord Sutch, Jeff Beck, Alexis Korner, Roy Wood, Robert Plant, Mike D’Abo, Cliff Bennett and Mike Oldfield, the musicians of Solid Silver backing group New Amen Corner boast a formidable musical pedigree. And special guests for this tour are The Merseybeats, led by founder members Tony Crane and Billy Kinsley, whose hits include Sorrow, Don’t Turn Around and Wishin’ and Hopin’. Cats The Musical Easter Workshop

8JUI (SBIBN 'MFUDIFS -FJDFTUFSTIJSF "SUT %BODF "DUJWBUF MON 25 - THUR 28 MARCH Young dancers in Leicestershire have a fantastic opportunity this Easter in being able to take part in an exclusive CATS the musical four day workshop at Guthlaxton College in Wigston. The workshop is being organised by Graham Fletcher, a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet who was asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to star as the principal Cats character Mister Mistoffelees as part of the original London production of this iconic musical. Graham Fletcher is well known in the region having promoted dance in Leicestershire’s schools for more than 13 years and is now director of Leicestershire Arts Dance Activate as well as Ballet Associates, the only intensive classical ballet training scheme of this standard in the East Midlands. Graham says ‘As Cats is coming to Milton Keynes theatre in the summer and I was part of the original cast, I thought it would be a great opportunity for dance students to take part in a workshop

Cats The Musical is at Milton Keynes Theatre 25 June - 6 July - book online at www.atgtickets.com where they will learn all about the Cats characters and create their own numbers from the show in the unique style of the choreography. To bring it all to life anyone who takes part in my workshop also has the option to book tickets for an outing to see Cats at Milton Keynes in July. The production company has laid on a special pre-theatre event especially for

us – we will be watching the Cats company dancers do their pre-show warm-up on stage and taking part in a talk hosted by the company manager. We may also even get to meet a real life Cat or two!’ The Cats workshop and performance event is very typical of the activities that are organized at Dance Activate, which is also a registered Arts Awards centre. Through Graham’s contacts, students are regularly offered opportunities to experience something new. Last year there was the chance to experience working on stage with English National Ballet, see them perform, meet dance act Flawless at the Royal Concert Theatre Nottingham, as well as being part of Dance Activate’s sell out production at Curve Theatre Leicester as part of Big Dance 2012 celebration week. This year Balletboyz will host an exclusive workshop for Dance Activate students on stage at Curve, and plans are already taking shape to visit the home of English National Ballet in London and to see their

award winning production of Swan Lake at the Albert Hall. Graham’s regular weekly classes include Dance Activate Diddlers for young children in Market Harborough, classical ballet, contemporary, tap and Dance RoX! which covers jazz, musical theatre, hip hop and street dance. In addition Graham also invites city and county schools to participate in his onsite creative dance workshops and hosts his unique annual Ballet RoX! Summer School which this year takes place from Monday August 19th. If you are a dancer and would like to join DANCE ACTIVATE’S CATS THE MUSICAL WORKSHOP at Easter or want to know more about classes, please contact Graham Fletcher on 0771 772 1916. Alternatively you can email him directly at grahamfletcher001@btinternet. com. or find further details on www.danceactivate.co.uk. friends so much fun? Which hotel has the best porn? What constitutes an airtight alibi? And is friendliness overrated? The Observer called her, “Feisty, funny and wonderfully bitchy”, whilst The Times declared that, ‘Many of the points Jo Caulfield makes about the human condition would have sociologists stroking their beards in admiration, but her audiences tend to be laughing too much to notice’. The celebration of anger continues with acerbic stories about dating, relationships, bad service, wrestling with a selfscanner in Tesco, and Jo’s litany of public self-humiliations. SATURDAY 16TH MARCH Based on his award-winning BBC Radio 4 series, Mark Steel’s In Town, is a celebration of the quirks of small-town life in a country of increasingly homogenised high streets. Steel’s bespoke observations on the small, sometimes forgotten, towns of Britain go right to the heart of British culture today, championing the very people who shape the places we live in now. “As everywhere hurtles along a route towards being identical to everywhere else, it seems any expression of local interest or eccentricity is becoming a yell of defiance. Scrape away the veneer of Wetherspoons and Pizza Hut-inspired uniformity, and the march of Tesco’s towards being reclassified as a continent, and

Britain is as magnificently diverse as ever, and ready to celebrate each distinct community. The elements of a town that make it unique are what make it worth visiting; they change a journey from being functional to being an experience.”. Save the tops as you will need them later. 2. Cut the mushrooms into 5mm slices and add into the pan. Continue to sautÊ for 5 minutes until starting to colour, stirring to prevent sticking. 3. Take off the heat and sprinkle the cornflour over. Once back on the hob

add the Marmite and 300ml of ale. Cook for a further 5 minutes or until mushrooms begin to soften. Use more ale if the mixture seems too dry. 4. Divide the mixture into 4 small soufflĂŠ/ceramic pie dishes. Cut out 4 circles of the pastry and place on top, leaving some room to rise. Brush with soya milk and make a small hole in the top to let the steam escape. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. 5. Cut the potatoes into large chunks and boil until soft but not falling apart. Drain and empty back into the pan to dry slightly. Add the remaining 50g margarine and mash very well. Finely chop the green part of the spring onions and add, with soya milk, to make a smooth mash.

Bring up to simmering point, cover the pan and simmer very slowly for about one hour, turning now and again so that the pears cook evenly in the wine. 5. When the pears are cooked, transfer to a bowl to cool, leaving the liquid in the pan. Remove the cinnamon stick. 6. Mix the arrowroot with a little water to form a smooth paste. Add this to the liquid in the pan over direct heat. Bring the syrup to simmering point so it thickens slightly and becomes translucent. 7. Take the pan off the heat and stir in the chopped stem ginger and ginger syrup to taste. Leave to cool. 8. Spoon the sauce over the pears, basting them well. Cover and chill thoroughly. Serve the pears in individual dishes with the sauce spooned over.

Town & County "SU 4PDJFUZ SFBDIFT 23 MARCH - 12 MAY As part of its 2013 centenary celebrations the Northampton Town & County Art Society will be holding a major exhibition at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery in March. The society was set up in 1913

by a group of local artists and every year since they have exhibited their finest and most recent artworks, including through both world wars. Over the past 100 years the society has had 35 presidents, including many of the county’s most

outstanding and esteemed artists. Among them are Henry Bird, T L Shoosmith, Tom Osborne Robinson, Peter Atkin, Chris Fiddes, G B Holland and Richard Barnard. Paintings by all 35 presidents will be featured in the ‘All the Presidents…’ exhibition, which will also chart the history of the society. Brian Mutton, president of the society 2010-11, said: “After 100 years of continuous artistic activity of the very highest standard in the county we could not let the year go by without marking our anniversary with a major exhibition. “We have chosen to represent the society through the work of its 35 Presidents who will each have several pieces on show together with a printed board outlining

The overall effect will be to give a comprehensive picture of the height of artistic activity in the county over this long period. The exhibition includes pieces from local and private collections, many of which have not been seen publicly for a generation.” ‘All the Presidents …’ will be showing at the museum from 23 March until 12 May.
