One For The Road -BVSJF 4BOTPN EJSFDUT IJT GBSFXFMM QSPEVDUJPO FRI 1 - SAT 23 FEBRUARY One of Willy Russell’s funniest and most poignant plays, One for the Road is directed by Royal & Derngate’s Laurie Sansom, as his last production before he leaves to head up the National Theatre of Scotland. This hilarious play takes to the Royal stage from Friday 1 to Saturday 23 February, featuring cast of well-known faces, comprising Michelle Butterly, Con O’Neill, Nicola Stephenson and Matthew Wait. One For The Road is a hilariously observant ‘80s comedy by one of the country’s most acclaimed writers, responsible for such well-loved classics as Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, as well as the hugely popular musical Blood Brothers. The play finds Dennis, on the eve of his birthday, making a desperate attempt to ditch the trappings of his newly acquired middle class life. Imprisoned on Phase Two of a new housing estate and surrounded by Tupperware parties, Richard Clayderman fans and garden gnomes,

Dennis yearns for his youth of road trips and music festivals. Once neighbours Roger and Jane arrive to help celebrate his birthday it is not long before he reaches breaking point. As the day spirals out of control, it becomes clear that the mindless vandalism inflicted on the estate may not be down to local teenagers after all, and his wife and friends

may not be quite what they seem. Dennis must attempt a break for freedom. ONE FOR THE ROAD can be seen at Royal & Derngate from Friday 1 to Saturday 23 February, and tickets, priced from £13 to £28 can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

Janina Fialkowska Plays Chopin 3PZBM 1IJMIBSNPOJD SFUVSO UP 3PZBM %FSOHBUF SUNDAY 27 JANUARY French conductor Fabien Gabel makes his Northampton début leading the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Janina Fialkowska Plays Chopin, a concert featuring three of the Romantic era’s most distinguished composers. Brahms’ darkly powerful Tragic Overture introduces Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2. Performed by Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska, it is a work of variety, containing lyrical melodies, elaborate ornamentation and Polish folk music influences. Finally, the audience is transported to the countryside to revel in the glorious musical landscape of Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony, its popular ‘storm’ movement surrounded by music of sunny grace and rustic charm. Janina Fialkowska is internationally renowned for her interpre-

tations of the classical and romantic repertoire, and the piano works of Chopin in particular. Her highlypraised recordings include the 24 Chopin Études, and three CDs released during the 2010 Chopin anniversary year to huge acclaim. 2010 also saw the world premiere of a Chopin-inspired piano concerto written for Fialkowska by John Burge, and her celebrated period instrument debut playing Chopin’s

E Minor Concerto on an historic Pleyel 1848 piano with the Tafelmusik Orchestra in Toronto. There’s some history behind the hair as this historical building was built in 1624 when it was once a famous inn. With interesting cellars, a secret passage way to the church, and original features. The inn was said to accommodate King Charles 1st and many of his soldiers prior to his defeat at the battle of Naseby in 1645. This would explain the presence of the resident ghost at the premises. The occasional sighting of a figure of a man dressed in a large hat and long coat, unexplainable cold spots and objects moving have been noted from time to time. The 1950’s saw the start of the building trading as a hair salon and has since then fashioned hair through the ages to

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

Trash is turned into treasure. 7BM )VOU BU /PSUIBNQUPO .VTFVN 2 FEBRUARY – 17 MARCH ‘Reincarnated Rubbish’, a solo exhibition of work by creative recycling artist Val Hunt, retrieves those everyday things we throw away and presents them in a new and fascinating dimension. Drinks can metal, foil take-away containers, computer parts and even babies’ dummies have been fashioned into eyecatching creations. Val says” Experimenting is

the key when working with any sort of artistic material. I love finding new ways of reworking recycling material to make it into a creditable craft piece and give it a new meaning.” Val’s work is incredibly intricate and visually stunning, yet still proves accessible with an underlying sense of humour. Despite her use of manufactured materials much of her inspiration comes

from natural forms, botanical, aquatic, animals and birds. A life-sized model of The Queen with her corgi, made from all sorts of ‘rubbish’, (including gallery leaflets) is one of the exhibits. This has become quite an exhibition mascot. ‘Reincarnated Rubbish’ is full of witty, humorous and thought provoking constructions. The aim of the exhibition is to whet the appetite, inspire and encourage everyone to

experience the fun of creative recycling. The exhibition will be on display at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery from the 2nd February – 17th March. Opening times are Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sundays 2pm – 5pm. Admission is free Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, Guildhall Road, Northampton NN1 1DP. Telephone: 01604 838 111
