Bully Boy "OUIPOZ "OESFXT UP IFBE UIF DBTU Fri 24 Aug - SAt 15 Sept Anthony Andrews, best-known from TV series Brideshead Revisited, will head the cast for the co-production of Bully Boy this autumn. Written by broadcaster and writer Sandi Toksvig, this play takes to the Royal stage before transferring to London. This sensitive and thoughtprovoking play follows Falklands War veteran Major Oscar Hadley, who is sent to a combat zone to probe allegations of severe misconduct by Eddie Clark, a young squaddie from Burnley and part of a self-styled ‘Bully Boy’ unit of the British army. As the interrogation develops, the two men bond as they try to come to terms with the horrors they have both

experienced at war. Bully Boy is a poignant and heartfelt exploration of post war trauma, providing a startling insight both into the minds of soldiers, and into their treatment by society when they return. The Sound of Music 6ONJTTBCMF TIPX BU PVUTUBOEJOH UIFBUSF TuES 21 AuG - Sun 16 SEPT ‘The Sound of Music’ is quite simply one of the most popular musicals of all time. As their final collaboration Rodgers and Hammerstein have created a true classic of musical theatre based on the heartwarming, true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent regularly misses her morning prayers

preferring to go to the hills to sing. Deciding that Maria is too high spirited and needs to learn something about the real world before she can take her vows, the Mother Superior dispatches her to serve as a governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s unforgettable score delivers some of the most memorable songs ever written for the musical stage including ‘Edelweiss’, ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’ ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and, of course, the title song. ‘The Sound of Music’ originally opened on Broadway in November 1959 and since then has gone on to touch the hearts of all ages around the world. Uplifting , fun yet always moving ‘The Sound of Music’ is

an unmissable treat for all the family. ThE SOund Of MuSiC runs from 21st August – 16th September at KilWOrTh hOuSE ThEATrE Lutterworth Road, North Kilworth, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE17 6JE Box Office 01858 881939 Email boxoffice@ kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk www.kilworthhousetheatre. co.uk

From child soprano to the world’s most successful female classical crossover act, there was still little in the Church canon that critics could call cool... Created in the shape of a relay runner, the maze has been designed not only to intrigue and delight our appetite for all things Olympian, but also to test visitors’ knowledge of great British sporting heroes. Whilst Team GB gear up for their Olympic challenge nearby at Loughborough University, Wistow Maze is offering visitors an opportunity to join in the patriotic fervour, exercising both mind and body along the way. “This year the Wistow Maze really has the winning combination of fun and learning, as well as being a celebration of one of the UK’s biggest sporting competitions for decades” says Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. Diana explains: “The challenge for visitors is to find 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the 3 miles of pathways in the giant maze. Each quiz board focuses on a sports event which will help to unravel the answer to the Quiz Trail, whilst also giving top facts about past and present British athletes”.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

Vasco Araújo 4UPSZ 5FMMJOH 1 September - 28 OctOber Fishmarket is delighted to announce the upcoming solo exhibition by Portugese artist Vasco Araújo at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, Abington Park Museum and Picturedrome, Northampton. The project, entitled Story Telling, opens to the public on 1 September 2012 and consists of newly commissioned and previous work by Araújo accompanied by a book and series of events. Storytelling is part of Fishmarket at..., a season of offsite projects across the town whilst the gallery renovate their new home at 9 Guildhall Road, Northampton. Over the past twelve months Lisbon-based Araújo made a series of research visits to Northampton that has inspired the production of his new body of work based upon the town’s shoe and boot heritage. The symbolic resonances of shoes – what they can mean in terms of identity, journeys and traces left behind – feed into the work. Araújo is an artist and opera singer fascinated by personal narratives, selfhood and collective memory and works across media, incorporating sculpture, drawing, performance, video and text.

18

WOW August 2012

A series of events will run alongside the main exhibitions, including a night of film screenings of past works at Picturedrome and the artist will be giving a talk about his work and conducting a Singing Stories family workshop to explore ways interpret the exhibition musically. Vasco Araújo’s international career has seen him undertake residencies at RÊcollets, Paris, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gates-

head. He has had solo exhibitions at Jeu de Paume, Paris, Boston Center for the Arts and Crowley Gallery, Sydney, as well as exhibiting extensively across Europe and beyond in group shows. His work is held in public and private collections in Europe, Dubai, Mexico, Israel and USA. Dress the World #FJOH TIPXO JO -FJDFTUFS /PSUIBNQUPO BOE /PUUJOHIBN ON NOW UNTIL SEPT 6 The Dress the World exhibitions are being shown in Leicester, Northampton and Nottingham.

All three involve significant creative input from young people in each location. Dress the World is the East Midlands’ contribu-

tion to the national Stories of the World project for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The three exhibitions celebrate the global exchanges that have shaped and continue to shape fashion in the East Midlands: • Living in Silk (Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Nottingham City Council) – explores the 5000 year history of Chinese silk production with outstanding silk garments, accessories and textiles on loan from the China National Silk Museum, Hangzhou. • Suits & Saris (New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester) – a major exhibition that visually explores both global and Leicester stories, highlighting the fusions of British and South Asian fashion traditions. Suits & Saris looks at previously unexplored aspects of British Asian fashion worlds, such as the role of East

African Asians in Leicester. • The World at Your Feet (Northampton Museum & Art Gallery) – explores the role of shoe fashion in creating cultural identity through the Museum’s world footwear collection. Dress the World project chair Ron Inglis of Nottingham City Council said; “This is a major programme at three of the region’s leading museums, focussing on the way that fashion has influenced the East Midlands and in turn how the region’s fashion has influenced the world. had my year 10 work experience at Town and Country Veterinary Centre in Market Harborough. Over the week I experienced what the veterinary nurses do behind the scenes, how well the patients are treated, and what a vet’s job actually involves. I sat in on vet consults, cleaned the kennels and helped out the nurses with simple tasks. After being told about the safety procedures and health and safety risks, we got to work. In the afternoon we cleaned all the surfaces, floors, and utensils and then we got into scrubs to clean and make sterile the operating theatre. As all the equipment has to be sterile for operations, we put all the

clean operating kit into special air tight bags that change colour to show sterility, and then we put them all into a sterilizing machine so there were no germs. All operations were performed in the morning unless it was absolute emergency. It was great to see the animals being returned to their owners and

how loving all the staff were towards the animals. The vets and nurses were all so friendly and caring, that the owners were made to feel calm because their beloved pets were going to a clean, safe environment. I really loved it at the vets and I enjoyed every moment of the experience (even

The Awards, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise

describes himself as the ‘chief apple presser and bottle washer’ of The Village Orchard at Flore, the news of being a triple finalist has come as a very pleasant surprise; “We were runners-up last year for our medium apple juice so while we very much hoped that we’d still be in the reckoning at this stage, it’s absolutely wonderful to have made all three shortlists! I am especially delighted that the chutney went down so well with the judges,” added Jonathan “ because that too was devised as a way of making use of our plums which would, like the apples, otherwise have gone to waste. It’s only been on the market for a few months so I’m delighted it’s been given such an early stamp of approval!” Those charged with the difficult but mouth-watering task of picking their favourites from the wonderful array of entries included Steven Saunders, a Fellow Master Chef of Great Britain and co-founder of BBC’s Ready Steady Cook , Holdenby House owner James Lowther, BBC Radio Northampton’s lunchtime presenter Helen Blaby and Rob Purdie, NEP’s Executive Director, who explained the impact that the competition is now having; “We are really beginning to see some maturity and momentum building within the Awards with a growing range of local producers who have the right ingredients, products and packaging

to make us proud that they are made in Northamptonshire. “We now have a really solid base within the local food and drink industry from which to develop our range of activities and we are continuing to constantly raise the bar to improve both product and financial performance so that we have a vibrant and growing sector.” That sentiment was echoed by the competition’s co-ordinator, Rachel Mallows from The Mallows Company who is now encouraging the county’s foodies to go out and buy those products that have been recognised. “Whether you’re sweet-toothed or savoury, like a tipple or are teetotal, there’s something for everyone in our shortlists. I really hope that Northamptonshire’s food lovers will add these items to their shopping list as we have some great producers, old and new, who are helping to put us on the culinary map and who deserve our support.” Visitors to the NOrthAmptONshire FOOD shOW @ Holdenby on 26th and 27th August will have their chance to taste the five shortlisted products in the ‘Artisan’ category while there will be an opportunity to sample those items vying for the titles of ‘New Local Product’ and ‘New Local Drink’ at a special event later in the autumn.
