Uglies Do Harborough! 4JTUFST UIBU MPPL B MPU MJLF .JTUFST TUES 27 - FRI 30 DECEMBER Market Harborough will host its first professional pantomime-style entertainment for some years when Cinderella’s Ugly Sisters arrive at Harborough Theatre, 27-30th December 2011, in search of love and their own happily-ever-after ending. Featuring extravagant (and frankly fabulous) costumes, acid wit, original music and big hair, Uglies Do Harborough follows the further adventures of Annie and Fannie, as they scour the local area looking for an eligible pair of princes – or even a couple of frogs with potential… Uglies Do Harborough has grown out of a show called Uglies Do Edinburgh, which was a big hit at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, playing to packed houses and winning a

prestigious and highly coveted accolade of a 5-star review in The Scotsman which proclaimed, “The Uglies are lovely. See them immediately!”. This 90-minute traditional family show is a novel take on panto’s tried-andtested formula of saucy wordplay, catchy choruses and glitzy outfits, which will appeal to one and all. The original musical numbers range from torch songs to disco, but all have one thing in common – they’re annoyingly catchy! Uglies Do Harborough is written and performed by David Kent and Dereck Walker, who are both graduates of The London School of Musical Theatre. Dereck’s credits include a number of gender-swapping roles which have seen him per-

form in fabulous frocks, such as the evil Grandmother in George’s Marvellous Medicine (Birmingham Stages) and Mrs Birling in An Inspector Calls (Arty Fact). Meanwhile, David has carved out a career in musical theatre, taking a leading role in productions such as Chicago (Cambridge Arts), Songs for a New World (New Players Theatre, London), Heroes & Villains (Harborough Theatre) and Musicals On Tour, as well as creating his own one-man show, Kent In Cabaret. Despite graduating from the same college, the pair only met when they worked together as the Ugly Sisters in Luton Library Theatre’s 2010 production of Cinderella. Realising that they formed a winning partnership, they started to wonder what happened to the Uglies after Cinders married her handsome prince – and the seeds of their successful Edinburgh Fringe show were sown. And their partnership continues; prior to appearing in Harborough, they will again be performing as Ugly Sisters in Market Drayton’s Festival Drayton Centre and Darwen’s Library Theatre productions of Cinderella this December. So look out, Market Harborough! The Uglies are hitting town, armed with numerous songs, glamorous costume changes, countless double entendres and their special guest ‘Tiddles the cat’ and this time, the Sisters are doing it for themselves!

MON 19 - SAT 31 DEC A spectacular adaptation of JM Barrie’s magical story of the boy who never grew up comes to De Montfort Hall this December, when the world-renowned Russian Ice Stars perform Peter Pan on Ice. Mysterious lands filled with pirates, Indians and ticking crocodiles will transport audiences back in time to a wonderful world of make-believe as Wild Rose Ice Theatre brings to life the book which has inspired generation after generation. Unique touches, such as penny farthings being ridden across the ice as the curtain opens on the skyline of a London park, complete with chimney stacks and chimney sweeps, pave the way for a fast-moving production which promises to be both lavish and spectacular.

A fantastic cast of Russian skaters, many of whom are former competitors at National, European and World Championship level, are stunningly choreographed by Caverliere Giuseppe Arena, who was responsible for the choreography at the Opening Ceremony of Turin’s 2006 Winter Olympics. The well-known characters of Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook will spring to life against some stunning scenery, when the De Montfort Hall stage is miraculously transformed into an ice rink for a show that will thrill the whole family.

Tue 20 Dec - saT 7 Jan When you see the name Pinocchio, you automatically think Disney! When you see the name Pinocchio in the context of theatre, you think Panto? But no! This is something far more dark and spectacular than you’d imagine... The award-winning theatre company Strangeface brings an extraordinary mix of masks, puppetry, live music and song to this tale of wild mischief and temptation. In a style closer to Roald Dahl than Disney, The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio takes us on a fantastical journey from Pinocchio’s first moments as a talking log, through a madcap series of scrapes and escapades with the scheming rascals Fox and Cat, magical fairies and a host of other mysterious characters on a voyage through strange faraway places. In turns thrilling and heartwarming, moving and

comical, Strangeface brings their inimitable magic to this masterpiece of surreal fantasy. This performance is suitable for age 5+ and includes the company’s ever-popular “backstage tour, a chance to take a close-up look at the puppets, set and instruments and meet the performers after the show. The nation’s favourite Aussie, who in 2010 made his sixth appearance at the Glastonbury Festival before a record breaking 130,000 audience, will appear for ONE NIGHT ONLY in “ROLF HARRIS LIVE” at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham. This is an opportunity to hear his classics songs with a live band …..and the biggest didgeridoo ever! From his birth in Perth, where he went on to become a champion swimmer, he arrived

in London in 1952 to study art, and a year later, began his phenomenal TV career, which has spanned an incredible 58 years with shows including Rolf’s Cartoon Club, the awardwinning Animal Hospital series and Rolf on Art, which gained the highest ratings ever for an arts programme. The man who invented the

wobble board was also invited to paint a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to celebrate her 80th birthday. Thrill again to Rolf’s mammoth hits including: Stairway to Heaven; Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport; Sun Arise and Two Little Boys. Rolf has been awarded the CBE, is a member of the Order

of Australia and has won many honours for his work in the entertainment industry. He has delighted several generations. We have all grown up watching him from his early days on television to cheering him at Glastonbury – where he was voted ‘most popular entertainer’. n-FWFMMJOH 5IF -BOEo -JWF FriDAY 16 DeceMBer After the storming success of their March tour, Levellers return to play 1991 album ‘Levelling The Land’ live and in its entirety, followed by favourites from their extensive back catalogue.. Levellers have been called a lot of things over their 23-year history. However, the closest thing to a consensus surrounding the seminal British folk-punk band is that their platinumselling 1991 album Levelling The Land is an absolute classic. In one fell swoop it propelled a group of disenfranchised misfits from playing pubs in Brighton to headlining Glastonbury Festival, and in the process becoming ‘The most popular band in Britain’ (NME).

the Moons 'PVS 1JFDFT PG B 'PVS 1JFDF sAtUrDAY 10 DeceMBer A four piece from Northampton, The Moons were founded in 2008 by singer, songwriter and guitarist Andy Crofts, formerly the bassist in The OnOffs and today Paul Weller’s keyboardist. With the group

receiving great reviews on their second album, Tales Of The Unexpected, the follow up to 2010’s Life On Earth. The album, a 14 tracker, was recorded over three weeks at Edwin Collins’ West Heath Yard studio and it is signature Moons,

defined by strong songwriting, delicious harmonising and tight musicianship. Influences range from Joe Meek and Syd Barrett to The Zombies and the high points are many, including the startling Jennifer Sits Alone, the garage nugget Double Vision

Love, a frenzied reworking of live favorite It’s Taking Over and the duet Something Soon with Paul Weller. The group have also just appeared on the JD Set celebration of the Smiths as a guest of Primal Scream’s Mani, which was aired on Channel 4. The Moons’ line-up is completed by bassist/keyboardist Tom Warmsley, drummer Ben Gordelier and guitarist James Edward Bagshaw. As a member of indie band Sukie, James wrote a 2008 Number 1 indie hit Pink-A-Pade. He also plays keyboards in the Lightning Seeds. RELEASE DATE: FRI 16 DEC Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his formidable colleague, Dr. Watson, in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large--Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)--and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder--a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle,

designed by one Professor Moriarty. Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen’s club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry)

are toasting Dr. Watson on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince’s murder makes her the killer’s next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him.

The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction--all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history...

1. Preheat the oven to 180ËšC/350ËšF/ Gas Mark 4. 2. Roll out the pastry to about the depth of a pound coin and cut using a 7.5cm (3 inch) round cutter. Lightly grease a cupcake tin and line the tin with the pastry. 3. Place a small amount of mixture into each one.

4. Bake in the oven for about 15 – 20 minutes until the pastry is golden brown, then allow to cool before transferring them to a cooling rack. 5.Prepare the EasyIce Royal Icing according to the pack instructions, and spoon the icing onto the top of each mince pie. WOW kids used a circular cutter to create lids from ready rolled icing (try using Xmas shape pastry cutters as an alternative).

1DB8=4BB WOW BUSINESS... SPONSORED BY

Business doesn’t have to be taxing! 1MBOOJOH UP CVZ TPNF NBDIJOFSZ PS PUIFS FRVJQNFOU GPS ZPVS CVTJOFTT #FXBSF 5JNJOH JT DSVDJBM UP ZPVS UBY SFMJFG Yet again we are seeing a different approach to the tax relief small businesses can gain on purchases of plant and machinery. Various governments over the years have used this relief as an incentive to encourage growth via additional spending by small businesses on replacement of plant, machinery and equipment. In recent years we have been through a period of 100% relief in the year of purchase via an Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) which is available up to a value of £100,000 per annum. This has enabled some very beneficial outcomes for traders by accelerating tax relief and

increasing amounts due under the tax credits regime. However in these times of austerity the AIA is being reduced in the 2012/13 tax year (with effect from 1 April 2012 for companies and 6 April 2012 for unincorporated businesses) to £25,000. This makes planning your capital expenditure over the short term essential to avoid missing out on the full AIA available. If we look at a limited company with a 31 March 2012 year end the decision is straight forward, there will be £100,000 of AIA available in the year to 31 March 2012 and £25,000 of AIA available in the year to 31 March 2013. However the problems

arise where the year end straddles two tax years whereby the AIA available is calculated by apportioning on a time basis. This also seems pretty straight forward but care must be taken with the purchase date or it will result in disappointing amounts being claimed against profits. For example farmer Giles who operates an incorporated business with a year end of 30 September 2012, decides to buy a new tractor costing £45,000. AIA available for the whole year is £62,500 (£100,000 x 6/12 +£25,000 x 6/12). If he buys the tractor in March 2012 then all of the £45,000 can be relieved. Should the purchase be delayed

Adrian Neal FCA, Partner Berry Accountants until May 2012 then even though the total AIA available for the year is £62,500 he will be able to claim relief on only £12,500. An even stranger result is that should he purchase the tractor in October 2012 then relief of £25,000 can be claimed. Therefore it shows that even though it may appear that the relief is simply being filtered out over two years, the relief on an asset purchased in a later month can actually gain more relief! In summary plan ahead and check it with your accountant! You do not want to be told later on that you have got it all wrong..

The lead up to Christmas is a great time to put your house into good repair and make sure the bad weather that lies ahead doesn’t leave unnecessary scars on your interior. If you, like many others choose to decorate your house ready for Christmas, you may find that you uncover more than you bargain for - some dodgy woodwork, crumbling plaster, a leaking radiator or maybe something even worse! Also if you have an open fire make sure you sweep the chimney before you open the tin of paint! Whatever you do make sure you have W.W. Brown’s number close by. On the other hand if your idea of Christmas decorating is hanging baubles from the tree and lighting up the garden with a sprinkling of fairy lights then this is the perfect time to assess the exterior of your home and take preventive action!

Before hanging festive lights from your gutter, clear any leaves that could potentially cause a blockage. Also, while you’re there make sure the gutter is secure and check for any rotten wood that may need replacing (if a replacement is required a PVC soffit board is ideal, as a low maintenance option). A leaking roof can prove disastrous, so check for missing or cracked tiles and again if necessary call in the professionals! A reminder from last month, make sure you get your boiler checked if you haven’t already!

WOW LOOKS AT SPORTING EVENTS IN THE MIDLANDS REGION AND BEYOND...

England Win World Netball Series! &OHMBOE s /FX ;FBMBOE England have been crowned World Netball Series Champions with a phenomenal win over New Zealand in the final at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. A fantastic Powerplay was the difference between the sides with Jo Harten ice cool in the shooting circle and Eboni Beckford-Chambers marshalling the defence. Following their respective wins in the semi-finals earlier in the day, there was a buzz around the Arena as the final approached and the teams were treated to deafening applause as they took to the court. Early nerves were quelled when Harten sunk her first attempt to send the fans

into hysteria. A see saw quarter had the Silver Ferns race into a 6 – 3 lead before Harten took aim from outside the circle and waved goodbye to a two pointer, that drew the teams level as the whistle sounded. The second quarter saw New Zealand dominate and force a couple of turnovers following great work from Anna Scarlett and Shannon Francois. Again they pulled clear, 12 – 7. England refused to lie down and the scurrying of Serena Guthrie and Sasha Corbin was a joy to watch, penalties were called on the visitors and England took advantage. The hosts were trailing by three when time was called on

the quarter but Harten still had a penalty shot to take from outside the circle. Just as in the first quarter the ball fell majestically into the net, the crowd were delirious and the momentum was with England even though they trailed 13-12 at half-time. An intense team talk from Anna Mayes followed as the teams re-appeared to flames and music signalling that both sides had chosen this quarter for their Powerplay. The lead switched hands continuously in the opening exchanges as Cathrine Latu, Maria Tutaia, Pamela Cookey and Harten all showed their class. It was a case of who was going to blink first, it was

New Zealand. Latu started seeing shots come off the ring with Stacey Francis supporting Beckford-Chambers excellently in collecting the rebounds; Harten and Cookey remained on fire. At the end of the third quarter, to the delight of those in attendance, England led 29 – 22. The Silver Ferns knew that they would have to come out fighting and needed the big shots to fall in if they were going to complete an astonishing fight back. If they missed, England were on hand to gobble up the rebounds, waste precious seconds and stay ahead of their opponents. Tutaia was tasked with the job and an initial effort that was successful made the crowd take note. Thankfully for the largely biased support, her further two attempts missed and the excellent England defence controlled the rebound. Time was in favour of the hosts and they beautifully played keep ball and recycled the ball between the thirds. An expectant crowd let out an almighty roar as the whistle blew and England were confirmed as Champions. IFNA president Molly Rhone handed out the winner’s medals, a jubilant Jade Clarke lifted the trophy and all that was left was to sign some autographs for a public full of adoration for what they had been lucky enough to witness.

Tokyo Swift... 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ UFTUT UIF 4V[VLJ 4XJGU 4QPSU “Great things can come in small packagesâ€?. It’s a well used expression and one that definitely suits Suzuki’s new Swift Sport. The car, which will be available in the UK in the New Year, is expected to sell for around ÂŁ14,500 and, let me tell you, you will get a lot for

your money if a super-mini is the kind of motor that toots your horn. I got to drive the Swift Sport around Barcelona as part of the Japanese company’s efforts to promote its latest model to the media. I was impressed; the car has more control, it’s more fun and it has lower emissions than its predecessor. But the best thing about it is that a

sixth gear has been added to a gearbox which has been woefully lacking in the past. On the outside, the Swift Sport looks great from the rear. A wind diffuser and twin tailpipes give it an appearance similar to a Renault Clio Sport. The front is less extreme, but from the side the car has a low-slung stance which immediately distinguishes it from a standard Swift. 17 inch

alloy wheels also add to the chunkier, more potent, image. Behind the wheel, the new model is quicker off the mark than the last one due to an increase in power output, which has risen from 121bhp to 134bhp. The sixth gear also helps to improve acceleration and gives the speedy Swift a more sporty gear change. The leather clad steering wheel and the front sports

seats add to the athletic feel of the Japanese car. The seats grip you when the Suzuki is flung around corners (and there were plenty of left and right-handers on the bendy hills rising above beautiful Barcelona). Don’t get me wrong, the Swift Sport is never going to give you an adrenaline overdose – but it’s fun enough to stand up to fast little numbers like the Citroen DS3, the Fiat Punto Evo and the MINI Cooper. With seven airbags, Suzuki’s pocket-rocket is safe as well as sprightly. It offers the same control and peace of mind as the standard Swift, which earned a five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) and the highest overall points scored amongst other new cars tested at the time. Standard safety equipment also includes anti-lock braking with electronic braking-force

distribution, and an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). Suzuki expects its new offering to appeal to motorists in their early 30s, so it’s possible that parents with young children, who are looking for a bit of a fun drive, could go for this motor. I suspect that many won’t be looking at the Swift Sport as a practical option though and it’ll be the single girls and guys with a limited budget and a need for speed who will be heading in their droves to Suzuki dealerships in 2012.
