Oh brother! 5IF TUVOOJOH #MPPE #SPUIFST JT CBDL JO UIF .JEMBOET Following sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, the international smash hit musical Blood Brothers continues to tour the UK, coming to Northampton for one week only. Hailed as one of the best musicals of all time, Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers has triumphed across the globe, scooping up no less than four awards for best musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway. This epic tale of Liverpool life has been running in London’s West End, since July 1988 and touring the UK since 1995. Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be reunited, by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle

world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax. A sensational cast, incredible show stopping music, remarkable staging and five star performances make Blood Brothers an enthralling night of entertainment. Willy Russell is undeniably one

of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists, whose countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.

The Go-Between n5IF QBTU JT B GPSFJHO DPVOUSZ UIFZ EP UIJOHT EJGGFSFOUMZ UIFSFo WEDS 2 - SAT 19 NOVEMBER A brand new musical adaptation of LP Hartley’s romantic novel The Go-Between comes to Northampton. A co-production between Royal & Derngate, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Derby LIVE, the play opened to rave reviews in Leeds in September. An elderly man, Leo Colston, stumbles across a trunk filled with the memories of his past, memories long buried and best forgotten. But he cannot forget the events of the oppressively hot summer of 1900, and the memories of his days spent in Norfolk come flooding back. Spending the holidays with the family of his school friend Marcus, the young Leo is un-

wittingly enlisted into an adult affair of deceit and forbidden passion. Acting as the go-between for the beautiful, upperclass Marian and tenant-farmer Ted, Leo becomes embroiled in a doomed love affair which will shape his life forever. This beautifully evocative new musical features young local talents in the roles of Leo and Marcus, found from open auditions. In Northampton William Miles from Long Buckby and Guy Amos from Hempton, Oxfordshire will be sharing the role of young Leo and Marcus is played by Adam Bradbury and Richard Linnell, both from Buckinghamshire. They join a cast of nine professional actors that includes Sophie Bould (A

Christmas Carol, Birmingham Rep) playing Marion, Stuart Ward (Dreamboats and Petticoats, West End) as Ted and James Staddon (The Crucible, RSC) as the grown-up Leo.

CountryBoy’s Struggle " TFBSDI GPS CFMPOHJOH WEDNESDay 23 NOvEmBEr Written and performed by Maxwell Golden, CountryBoy’s Struggle is a unique solo show, which comes to The Core at Corby Cube on Wednesday 23 November. The show uses a hip hop style to tell a very honest story of one man’s search for a sense of belonging in a foreign environment. Inspired by Maxwell’s own time spent growing up in the coastal community of Bude in Cornwall, CountryBoy’s Struggle integrates music, poetry and MC-ing with physical comedy to reflect both rural and urban environments. The one-man show perfectly captures how it feels to grow up with a sense of isolation – a ‘fish out of water’ story which is full of humanity, pathos and warm wit.

Writer and performer Maxwell Golden says: “It’s about what it’s like living in a rural area and wanting to make urban music, then moving to the city and finding it’s not what you expect – especially when your heart and soul is on the beaches and with the community you grew up in. Although it is performed predominantly through the aesthetic of modern UK Hip Hop theatre, the real emotion underlying the story is always of upmost importance The performance is complemented with a workshop and engagement activity, which aims to provide a platform for young artists from both rural and urban environments. Contact’s Artistic Director Baba Israel comments: “I’m

really excited about directing Maxwell Golden’s CountryBoy’s Struggle. Maxwell is a fantastic artist with a background in hip hop and spoken word but also in clown and physical theatre and he’s going to bring together those skills to tell a really important story about a young man and his journey. I think this is going to be a new kind of show that is going to create a bridge between two worlds – between the world of rural and the world of urban, and it will engage young people from those areas to start creating their own expression. CountryBoy’s Struggle comes to The Core on Wednesday 23 November. WEDNESDAY 16 NOVEMBER War is over and the thoughts of homecoming soldiers turn to love. However, as conflict on the home front ends, Britain’s women are rolling up their sleeves to face a fresh battle – the assertion of their new role in a previously male dominated society. One woman in particular is about to embark on her own merry war… Shakespeare’s popular comedy tells of two pairs of lovers. Headstrong Beatrice and proud Benedick live in staunch denial of their true feelings for each other, whilst lovesick Claudio and sweet, naive Hero are head over heels with devotion. But the path of true love never runs smooth, and with foul play and mischief afoot at the hands of

devious villain Don John, this classic play promises plenty of scope for Mappa Mundi’s unmistakable style. Over the past two decades cult Welsh theatre company Mappa Mundi have built a reputation for gloriously irreverent, populist and accessible adaptations of classic theatrical and literary works. With a well deserved reputation for quality, originality and an engaging irreverence that continues to charm audiences and win fans UK wide.

thurSDay 24 NOveMBer One of the world’s greatest sitar players and daughter of the unsurpassed Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar performs at Northampton’s Royal & Derngate, as part of her Traveller tour. Having collaborated with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, Madonna, Nina Simone, Sting and James Taylor, internationally acclaimed sitarist, composer, and conductor Anoushka Shankar has flourished as ‘crossover’ act. Yet, as daughter of Ravi Shankar, one of the greatest musicians of modern times, Anoushka is deeply rooted in the Indian classical tradition. She has released five highly acclaimed

albums, performed a leading role at a Royal Albert Hall Prom, and is the youngest ever artist to receive a ‘Best World Music Album’ Grammy. Her new recording, Traveller (released 17th October), brings together the passionate and diverse music of Spain with the vibrant, ancient forms of the Indian classical tradition. Tracing the Gypsies’ journey from their homeland in Rajasthan and finally settling in Spain, Traveller explores the evolutionary bridge between flamenco and Indian music. In a beautiful, ground breaking musical collaboration, Anoushka Shankar brings Traveller to life in a concert featuring a group of all-star Indian

and flamenco musicians, to reforge the link separated by a thousand years, between Spanish and Indian music. Anoushka and her band fuse the rhythmic and tonal differences of these genres combining two highly evolved musical forms with refreshing innovation, presenting a unique crossover portrait exploring the full history of flamenco and Indian music from their origins to the modern day, transporting the listener on a magical journey. Thursday 24 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £22 and £19 and can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

Lucinda Belle +B[[ )BSQJTU CSFBLJOH TUFSFPUZQFT BU UIF 4UBCMFT TueSday 15 NOveMBer So, which Lucinda Belle would you like to meet first? There are lots to choose from, as one of the most notable up-and-comers on the UK music scene prepares to take 2011 by the horns She honed her skills playing harp in hotels, but soon ditched that to become a Jazz Harpist in none other than Nashville. Returning home with harp in the back of a black cab, a new era began where she earned a reputation as a songwriter and session player in the good company of Rufus Wainwright, The Petshop boys, Jamaroquai and Robbie Williams, with whom she caught her break, spotted at the Electric Proms with him. Lucinda is pioneering the way forward for the harp. Effortlessly breaking down stereotypes, she

gracefully transports you into her world proving with her original acoustics covers such as Gaga’s ‘Telelphone Song’ and Paolo Nutini’s ‘Candy’, that she and just her harp are enough to fill any stage. Lucinda will be promoting and releasing her ‘Covers’ EP due for release in May 2011. Drawing comparisons don’t do justice to her well-developed ear for a pop melody, captivating voice and an undeniable gypsy spirit that permeates everything the Belle does. ‘I really do believe in my songs and that there’s something for everyone in my music,’ she says. ‘I did a full circle and became who I was meant to be in life.’ the Lucinda Belle Orchestra Tues 15 Nov. elected President of the Elgar Society in recognition of his devotion to the composer’s work. This exquisitely romantic concerto is paired with two other English masterpieces. SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER Clare’s unique performance is held together by the concept of the great “British” song … Although rooted in the jazz traditions of the 1930’s and 40’s, the show covers a hugh spectrum of sounds and genres but focuses on Clare’s interpretations of these well-written songs which have stood (and are standing) the test of time – from Noel Coward to Annie Lennox, the show wends its way through 100 years of great songwriting. The two songs that started the whole project were Try A Little Tenderness and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square “I had always assumed these to be American songs and was fascinated to learn that both were written by Americans and Brits

working together”. Add to the mix an uplifting New Orleans take on Ray Noble’s Love Is The Sweetest Thing, a blistering samba arrangement of Moloko’s Sing It Back with Latin percussion. It is to Clare’s credit that all these songs from such wide-ranging eras sit alongside each other so comfortably. The evening promises to be as varied as it is entertaining, with Clare’s inimitable humour and banter mixed perfectly with uplifting ballads and up-tempo classics, old and new. 11.11.11.11 " TQFDJBM 3FNFNCSBODF %BZ FrIday 11 NOvember At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011, the nation will pause. People all over the country will fall silent and take two minutes to reflect on the sacrifice of our brave Service men and women from conflicts past and present. 2011 is The Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary but this year is doubly special - because it is a once-in-a-life-

time Remembrance Day. At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 2011 - 11-1111-11 - we will be remembering those who were willing to lay down their lives for their country. Many people associate Remembrance Day with heroes of D-Day or the Battle of Britain’s Spitfire pilots. Some people think of the deeds of the SAS during the Falklands conflict or, of course, Flan-

ders Fields from World War I, carpeted in poppies growing where so many men lost their lives. But in the last few years it’s also been about the nation showing its support for the soldiers returning injured and traumatised from current conflicts. Last year the Poppy Appeal raised a record total of just over £36 million. In 2011, the 90th year of the Royal

British Legion, the hope is to collect ÂŁ40 million to help the Afghanistan generation of the Armed Forces and their families - today and for the rest of their lives.. Hallaton’s Fox Inn 5SBEJUJPOBM DIBSN XJUI B XIPMF OFX BUNPTQIFSF BOE GPPEJF BUUSBDUJPOT This is a consummate country boozer, the garden by the picturesque village pond my favourite summer bolt-hole with the kids. The transformation that has taken place is clever and subtle. Where once the cosy bar was full of atmosphere and the dining room rather cut off, the removal of a chimney breast now allows warmth and laughter to flow through the whole pub. Entirely traditional in feel, the pub now works better for everyone in the busy bar sampling the Woodford’s Wherry Norfolk Ale and the procession of great guest beers that have recently led to a Cask Marque Award. What’s more, the newly popular restaurant is also a pleasure to visit and take full advantage of

Aaron’s other great step forward: top-notch main courses starting at just £5.95. Steak pie, home-made soups, great slabs of meat, hearty and wholesome. Sunday dinner is perhaps the ultimate test of any eaterie and The Fox passed with flying colours – a choice of one to four meats with all the trimmings for £8.95. And the kids are mighty chuffed, too, to hear Aaron’s plans to restore the popular play area out by the pond!

7><4 60A34= IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR HOME A WOW HOME.

Boiling Over %POoU HFU DBVHIU PVU CZ UIF CJH GSFF[F With the winter months approaching most people are thinking of nights out, bonfire parties or planning what to do at Christmas. Each year many people are left in the cold when they suffer from a boiler breakdown during the holiday period and are unable to find a plumber prepared to come out to fix it, or are forced to pay extremely high prices to get their boiler working again. Preventing a breakdown and ensuring that your boiler is kept in good condition can be achieved through regular servicing. It’s therefore best to get your boiler serviced every year. As well as saving a lot of money in the long term, there are other benefits as well. A faulty boiler can be extremely dangerous, increasing the risk

of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s best to arrange your service for the summer months, before the traditionally busy autumn season, when people start putting the heating on and there are more breakdowns. Even so, if you have left it a bit late, and even if your boiler appears to be working fine, don’t delay, call W.W. Brown & Sons on 01858 465 463 now for an appointment to make sure you keep safe and warm throughout the cold months ahead!. 7>C C8?B • Always make sure your engineer is qualified and registered - The Gas Safe Register is the official body which oversees gas repair work. The organisation has replaced CORGI. • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm - it could save you from the silent killer - carbon monoxide poisoning. Symptoms of poisoning are similar to having a hangover, such as sickness, fatigue and dizziness, so they may be difficult to spot especially for students. If you’re in any doubt whatsoever, contact your landlord and ask for checks to be made. • Repair leaking taps - it will save energy. • Avoid using MDF in a wet room or bathroom as it doesn’t tend to be waterproof.

<>C>A8=6 WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

The great Estate! 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ UFTUT UIF 78 1BTTBU &TUBUF Until fairly recently the estate car was thought of as the ugly one out of the family. It was the unwritten rule that its saloon and hatchback siblings would be better looking. Today that still holds some truth, but not when it comes to the new Volkswagen Passat. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in my eyes the latest Passat Estate is

more appealing than the saloon. But it’s not all about appearance because the VW is also a practical, refined, comfortable and economical car to drive. Indeed, the Passat is established as a firm favourite with UK buyers, with over 600,000 examples having found homes here since it arrived on the scene in 1973. The seventh generation Passat

is the most advanced iteration yet with every model fitted with special sound insulating windscreen glass and new sound deadening materials to make it one of the quietest cars in its class. As well as an elegant new look on the inside and out the Passat can be specified with Automatic Distance Control (ADC) that can instinctively

slow the car to a halt should it encounter traffic. In addition, the VW can be fitted with a fatigue detection system that monitors the driver’s inputs and automatically emits an audible and visual warning to recommend a break if required. Of course, improving safety in cars is vital, but developing cleaner, greener engines is

.0503*/( equally important to motor manufacturers - and VW is no exception. That’s why the German company’s diesel engines are now badged as BlueMotion products (why not GreenMotion?) and they are equipped with battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems as standard. The result is that the Passat, on test here in SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS DSG guise, is capable of 54.3 mpg and emits only 135 g/km CO2. That’s pretty good going when you consider the car is fitted with a six-speed auto gearbox (with very handy flappy paddles behind the wheel). Alright, the 2.0 litre 140 PS (138 bhp) engine isn’t the quickest, but the Passat I had felt solid, well-built and fast enough for purpose. I couldn’t stop praising it when I lifted the tailgate. The load area is vast and it swallowed up everything I needed to chuck in – and more. It’s an ideal car for a family – and as a dad of two young

children I felt this might well be a motor I’d choose to buy – if I didn’t already have a perfectly decent Audi A4 Avant. Actually, the Audi I own is a 2003 model and the boot is nowhere near the size of the latest Passat’s! The VW is perfect for longdistance commutes or short school runs. I never felt tired behind the wheel, despite driving up and down the M6 several times over the week I had the car. And on the short trips to school and nursery the decent turning circle on the Passat came in handy when chucking U-turns in narrow streets. I can’t believe I’ve been so enthusiastic about an estate car. I must be getting old. But, believe me, if you have a family and you’re in the market for a substantial, comfortable, well screwedtogether, economical, loadswallower then the new VW Passat Estate is a car to add to your list of test drives.
