This autumn, a castle will be added to the list. The Great Hall

of Oakham Castle in Rutland, used as a courtroom since the 12th century, will be the scene of a battle of the sexes when Angelina sues Edwin for breach of promise in Trial by Jury by Gilbert & Sullivan. As one of the founding members of Love Poets, who have a regular spoken word event at The Fuse bar in Northampton, Caroline is hoping to encourage more

people to have a go at writing and performing. ‘Love Poets is all about creating a community of artists, a warm atmosphere where everyone feels happy to share their work and appreciate the work of others.’ Caroline started to write poetry at a young age to help her overcome her dyslexia ‘writing short stories and poetry with my mum gave me an understanding of language that school never did. Young people can become so easily disinterested if they don’t do well at school, but poetry is a way of expressing yourself, your joys and frustrations that sets it apart from so many other forms of spoken word.’

lthough you don’t have to be an accomplished musician to take part in one of these workshops, the diversity of music these kids brought to the project definitely kept the pro’s on their toes! WOW kids - “We started the four day course with a few name games to get to know each other, then we were introduced to the professional musicians from the Royal Philharmonic – Tim, Jane, Phil,

Ruth, Eric, and Roger. With our instruments out and warmed up, we were all excited about the first piece of music we were going to write as a group. By the end of the session we had written a piece we called; Fast, wild and cra-zy! It was amazing to think this happened in just one day. By Friday we had written 5 pieces in total, and were all jelling well as a group. We worked hard to perfect our songs for the Friday evening when we performed to an audience. We thoroughly enjoyed performing in the Core Theatre, the performance went really well, and was also great fun!” “We took away from this experience a

lot of new friendships and an understanding of interesting ways of adapting music to suit all! We look forward to seeing the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra when they return to the Core.”

Her favoured painting style is semi abstract and her subject matter is the sea, because of its association with fast flowing movement and with yacht racing (her other passion!). In this demonstration/workshop, clay is used create an owl by rolling a slab base then taking ready prepared coils and building them up, a layer at a time. No sharp tools are used, wooden tools and are the best tools of all. Bring an apron. Materials and tools provided (£5 if you’d like

Sue Lydia Taylor is a past winner of the Northampton Town and County exhibition in 2000 and the Wellingborough Open Art Competition in 2004. Sue’s approach to still life painting is traditional, outlining the objects in charcoal, then applying a monochrome base before completing with a subtle colour range. This workshop will cover experimentation with subdued tones, varying the lighting and strength of colour.

The main purpose of this is to give a sense of ‘life’ to an object to see it in a different way and to convey a sense of calm to the viewer whenever possible. Bring your own materials.

This was to progress individuals’ work, and also to work as a group to provide challenges and to exhibit our work more widely. Supporting each other helps to progress our work beyond the boundaries of traditional patchwork and quilting. Members of the group come from a variety of textile backgrounds, with some having City & Guilds, in either embroidery or quilting. This is our second exhibition in this exciting museum. This

time we looked at the shoes from the 1920’s and 1930’s and used the photos taken as our design sources. The shoes will be on show in the exhibition and each quilt or 3-D object will be able to be referenced back to its origin. The collection of work is titled ‘Footloose and Fancy Free’

teve Harley and Cockney Rebel play the Market Harborough Leisure Centre early next month. Still as poptastically hook-laden, as intelligent and as firedup as ever, there’s no doubt that a couple of hours in Steve’s presence will make you smile. He’s a rebel, an iconic entertainer, an all-time chart great... and a perfect gent. F>F Were Cockney Rebel glam, were they prog or were they punk? BC4E4 Cockney Rebel was a theatrical unit, really. But Glam rock was a way of bringing some theatricality into rock music, so I suppose there was, for a very short time, a touch of it involved in the band. We grew away from all that pretty soon though. F>F Hold on, didn’t you start out on the London folk circuit? So maybe that’s a more telling description of the singer-songwriter tradition to which you belong? BC4E4 I cut my teeth playing folk clubs like Les Cousins, The Troubadour and Bunjies in London. Mostly I played as a floor-spotter (open-mic in today’s terminology, I believe). I wasn’t really a big success among their audiences though. I mostly sang the songs that comprised the first two Cockney Rebel albums and they wanted traditional or protest stuff. But that surely made me more in the mould of singer-songwriter, which is what I am, albeit with rock musicians around me on stage. F>F You’re one of the rock world’s most literate songwriters. Are your literary heroes

and influences as important to you as the musical ones? BC4E4 That’s very nice of you! I blush. The list of literary heroes is very long and distinguished: Hemingway, Woolf, Steinbeck and Huxley all had a profound effect on me during teenage years especially. Eliot taught me metaphor and the splendour of the classics. Shakespeare broke my heart several times. I read him now and still don’t think I’ll ever write another rhyming couplet worthy of the ink! F>F What music were you brought up on? BC4E4 The Light Programme was always on in my mum and dad’s flat in Deptford, south-east London, so we heard the 50s and

808 */5&37*&8 early 60s middle-of-the-road stuff, then the explosion came and I was in at the start of it all, as a mere lad of, what, 12, 13? I firmly believe that miracles only happen in the bible. But when Paul and his young mate George were introduced to John Lennon, some very powerful force was at work. And to have Dylan changing the music world forever in a moment, at one and the same time – priceless. My mates and I fell in love and had our first sexual experiences to Motown

though. Motown was romance.

F>F How lucky have you been?

F>F And what street were you brought up on? What was the vibe in Deptford Fun City as a child?

BC4E4 Life is generally good to me. But I keep a lot to myself.

BC4E4 I was born and lived two years in Chipley Street, a Victorian terrace of two-up, two-downs with outside privies. It backed on to the railway embankment near Cold Blow Lane, where the old Den sat. We are Millwall men through and through, my dad and all the male line in the Nices. There were bomb sites all around, and pre-fabs. We moved to a good flat, with 4 bedrooms in New Cross Gate in the mid-50s.

F>F Tell us about the new album, Stranger Comes To Town... BC4E4 This is my latent protest collection. Songs from a mind turned sour after all those Tony years. Society is doomed, unless discipline is returned to the home and the schools, and political correctness in its most ardent form eradicated, outlawed. Tony gave this island race too much rope and too little hope. Stranger Comes To Town dances at times, though, and has several optimistic messages. I play lots of those songs Live and they seem to fit right in. F>F Do you prefer to play with a big, noisy band or do you feel your words and music can make more of a personal impact in a stripped-down one-man performance? And how about a band with an orchestra and choir?!? BC4E4 I never play alone, but do tour in a three-man acoustic set-up which I love. The intimacy is rewarding for me and the audience. Must be all-seated though. Standing with a beer in their hands, nattering, doesn’t suit that set-up very well. But I really love playing in the big rock band too. Sometimes there are eight of us up there and it feels sexy and powerful. Both codes suit me well – see, I am lucky! F>F

proportions and low silhouette. Typical coupĂŠ features include the short front overhang, long bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and long, stretched out roof. The cabin extends far beyond the rear axle over the rear window in its flat position to a sportily short tail end. At the front, the new coupĂŠ shares the same styling as the latest C-Class and yet still has its own twist. The front view is dominated by the prominent radiator grille surround including the bumper. The centre air intake opens upwards, forming a visual base unit for the radiator grille which has the double-louvre style typical of a coupĂŠ. Two chrome louvres ex-

tend left and right either side of the central star, tapering off at the outer edges and creating a sporty, arrow-shaped horizontal sweep which gives the front end a pronounced V-shape. From the rear, the new CClass CoupÊ looks sportily short. Because the roof flows beyond the rear axle with the steeply raked rear window and fluid C-pillars, the appearance of length is reduced. A wide chamfer at the top of the boot lid, which is based on the side panel, highlights the rear’s compactness.

Inside, the C-Class CoupĂŠ is a fully fledged four-seater featuring sporty, comfortable integral seats. If desired, the backrests in the rear can be folded down to make the boot larger. The dashboard instrument panel features a strong, high-quality design and, as standard, the coupĂŠ comes with the new generation of three-spoke steering wheel with its chromed central spoke that first appeared on the new CLS. Also, all the engine variants are classed as BlueEFFICIENCY units, showing that they are particularly efficient and environmentally friendly in their use of fuel. The C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY AMG Sport Coupé oilburner, on test here, is available with 6-speed manual transmission and is capable of 55.4mpg. My demo car had the 7G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission with Speedtronic cruise control, variable speed limiter and steering wheel gear shift paddles fitted. The optional

‘box made the whole driving experience rapid and smooth as silk - yet the car still returned 53.3mpg. This corresponds to 139 grams of CO2 per kilometre, compared to 133g/km for the manual. If all that isn’t quite enough to make you want to splash your cash on the new Merc, then its impressive safety kit might just do the trick. Well, it’s a small, environmentallyfriendly car that’s easy to park, affordable to run, but is stylish, safe and fun to drive too. It’s also pretty quick. It has a bold look inside and out, cloaking a strong structure that makes it protective, good to drive and welcoming for passengers. And under the hood, the Evo 1.4 16v MultiAir 135 Sporting, on test here, conforms to Euro 5 emissions requirements and is fitted with Start&Stop technology as standard. This gives improved fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions, which means lower car tax. But what’s the Evo Sporting model like to drive? Basically,

it’s speedy. It’s also agile and enjoyable. That’s the bottom line. With almost 100bhp per litre at your command, the car accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds, yet also offers a remarkable 50.4mpg and a CO2 figure of just 129g/km. And, okay, because the Fiat has racy on-road behaviour, it does sacrifice comfort for a hard ride – especially on B roads, but its direct steering, road holding and assertive looks make up for it. Also, quick little cars need powerful brakes and I’m pleased to say that the feisty Fiat doesn’t disappoint. It has ABS anti-lock braking with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Holder to assist with starting off on a slope. It’s all very reassuring. Inside, the three-door 135bhp Sporting model is still big enough for a family of four, although you’ll struggle to fit anything more than the weekly shopping in the boot. It’s a deep,

relatively practical, rectangular load area, but it really isn’t going to swallow lots of luggage, or even a large pushchair. The cabin appears to be well screwed together and the seats are sporty and hold you in just the right places. The materials used on these and the door panels make the Punto Evo look and feel sophisticated. A classy piano black panel surrounds the sound system’s LCD display and includes buttons for functions such as the central locking set into it. The instruments feature large dials for the speedometer and rev counter, and these sit within a cowl that shades them from bright light. The instrument panel also features a gear shift indicator which advises you when to change to a higher or lower gear, depending on conditions, and a ‘real time’ indication of consumption. The Fiat features a generous amount of standard equipment including front driver, passenger and driver’s knee airbag, five

standard-size seats, two rear head restraints, front electric windows, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, electric mirrors, and Blue&Me infotainment - which works with TomTom technology. The Blue&Me system also works in conjunction with Fiat’s eco:Drive software. Downloading this from the Fiat website enables you to use the in-car USB port to transfer information about your driving to a PC. You can then request an assessment of your skills at the wheel, compare yourself with others and progress through a series of tutorials to make your driving style more environmentally sound. Impressive, or what? So, if you’re after a speedy, green, hatchback with lashings of dynamism and gadgetry, then have a look at the Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 16v MultiAir 135 Sporting. The diminutive Italian motor is a real blast to drive and yet it’s affordable to buy and run too.
