FrI 9 - SAT 4 SEPT A stylish new comedy starring Nigel Havers – one of the UK’s most popular stage and television actors – opens at Royal & Derngate this autumn prior to a West End run. Basket Case takes to the Royal stage from Friday 9 to Saturday 24 September. When Miranda and her exhusband Guy are drawn back together by the ill-health of their elderly pet dog Toby, a fastpaced exchange of accusations

begins. Joined in turn by genial vet Martin and long-time family friend James, this rapid-fire foursome deliver belly laughs and touching observations in equal measure as the sanctity of family life is torn apart. Penned by BAFTA awardwinning Nick Fisher (the writer for TV series Manchild, Hustle and Holby City), Basket Case is a perfectly crafted, quickwitted contemporary comedy which rips the lid off a so-called

‘civilised’ modern divorce and reveals the dark and complex emotions that lurk beneath.. Basket Case, opens at Royal & Derngate Friday 9 to Saturday 24 September. Tickets are priced from £27 to £12, with concessions, groups and schools discounts available. Romeo & Juliet 4IBLFTQFBSFoT NPTU QPQVMBS SPNBODF BU UIF .BTRVF 28 July – 6 auguST William Shakespeare’s perennial favourite Romeo and Juliet is being performed by Masque Theatre in the Elizabethan open-air setting of the courtyard of Abington Park Museum, Northampton. The venue lends itself to the atmosphere of the play and will be performed in period costume. Though not actually a ‘tragedy’ as described in the original title the story of the two ‘star-crossed’ lovers, played by young actors Ste Applegate and Lisa Neophitou, is one that most audiences would mostly name if asked to recall a Shake-

speare play. As Romeo and Juliet come from opposing families, their love must be concealed until their marriage - a theme that is still relevant today. However Romeo is banished for having avenged the death of his friend Mercutio (Scott Bradley) and fate ensures that theirs is a wedding that will never take place. Since it’s inception in 1932 Masque has performed Romeo &Juliet five times and this year Masque Theatre were also invited to be part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 50th anniversary celebrations ‘Open

Stages’ and involved the company in a professional actors workshop at the RSC along with inclusion in their website. Details about Masque Theatre may also be found on the internet at www.masquetheatre. co.uk.

Tickets for ROMeO and JulieT are ÂŁ10 adult, ÂŁ8 cons., ÂŁ6 child, or a Family Ticket for ÂŁ26 (2 adults & 2 children), all of which are available ‘on the door’ each night of performance from 7pm. All seats are unreserved. www.masquetheatre.co.uk.

FRi 15 - SaT 30 July Following its sell-out success last year, Royal & Derngate is once again transforming the whole of the Derngate auditorium into a giant children’s playmat for a fantastic interactive show for children and families to enjoy together. Flathampton – which runs for a fortnight from Friday 15 to Saturday 30 July spanning termtime and school holidays – was created for Northampton audiences by the same team who produced the popular shows Wish Wash, Minibreak and Knitwits. The people of Flathampton

get on with life as best they can but everything in town is as flat as a pancake – from the sandwiches in Paolo’s CafÊ to the stethoscope on Doctor Zee’s desk. But when Kate comes back from the big city she brings a truckload of weird and wonderful solid objects for her old friends and introduces a new dimension to life in Flathampton. Flathampton will take you on an amazing interactive journey round the biggest playmat you will ever see, as you help Kate and the Flathamptonites to build up their town. You’ll collect your Flathampton money, spend it at the Flathampton shops, ice some Flathampton cakes at the cafÊ and you can even try your hand at taking photos for Flathampton News, or take part in a fashion show at the makeover salon. An event the whole family will enjoy, Flathampton is directed by Royal & Derngate’s As-

sociate Director Dani Parr and was written by Daniel Jamieson, re-uniting the team that has worked on the theatre’s hugely successful interactive shows for under-6s which have taken place in Underground over recent years. Flathampton takes over the Derngate auditorium from Friday 15 to Saturday 30 July. Weekday term-time performances are ideal for early years (under 6s) and their families and along with schools and nurseries (tickets £6 each), while weekend and school holiday performances are suitable for children of all ages with their families (tickets £7 each).. www.royalandderngate.co.uk. There are also two special evening performances, with a grown up twist, on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 July for teenagers and adults only (tickets £10).

Rolf’s BBC television series Rolf on Art achieved the highest television ratings ever for a UK arts programme. July 9 - AuguSt 27 Kettering’s Alfred East Art Gallery’s first major summer exhibition is ‘Of Land and Sea’ by artist and illustrator Chris Prout. The Welsh-born artist has work in collections throughout the UK and overseas. This will be Chris’s first solo show at the principal gallery in his adoptive home town. The opportunity was offered to Chris at last year’s Kettering Open Art Competition, where he won first prize and the public vote for his impressions of the Welsh coastline. ‘Of Land and Sea’ is an expression of the artist’s twin existence; of life in Northamptonshire and his native connection with South-West Wales. Chris describes the work as ‘impres-

sionistic’ and ‘expressive’ – and his love of the Welsh hills and coastline is apparent in his bold, dramatic landscapes. Meanwhile, his striking depiction of life in Northamptonshire is centred around optimistic landscapes, villages and townscapes. Last December, Chris was presented with the prestigious Rose Bowl Award for his illustrations of Kettering’s town-centre regeneration scheme. Bjorn Again are wow’s annual faves; but the true power of this outdoor extravaganza is the bill’s strength in depth, which offers top-quality, atmospheric entertainment on a similarly nostalgic tip in Stephen Triffitt‘s ultimate tribute to Frank Sinatra – following on from headline appearances on the strip in las Vegas and performing to sellout audiences in the west end.

‘Any Dream will Do’ winner and west end Star lee mead is another show-tune sure-shot, while classical fans will welcome the debut visit of classical boy band Blake, who recently hit with their single ‘All of me’, released as a commemorative track in celebration of the Royal wedding.

Fri 21 – Sun 23 Oct This year’s sixth Annual Arnold Festival marks what would have been Sir Malcolm Arnold’s 90th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, the Royal and Derngate shall be presenting performances of all nine symphonies by the illustrious Northampton-born composer - incontestably one of the greatest ever symphonic cycles by an English composer. The weekend of concerts, talks and other events culminates with this special celebra-

tory concert, featuring Sir Malcolm’s emotionally-charged Ninth Symphony - an epic masterwork that was five years in the making. Completing the programme is Tchaikovsky’s evocative Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Brahms’ passionate Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. In addition to the symphonies the weekend will be punctuated by other popular and entertaining works, many short talks given by those who have a particular connection or interest with

each work and performances of many of Sir Malcolm’s attractive and shorter small scale works written around the same time as each symphony. The great actor Robert Hardy will be launching the Festival.. tHe ArnOld FeStivAl GAlA cOncert is at the Royal and Derngate, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP on Fri 21– Sun 23 Oct. Important art treasure under the hammer ~ EJTDPWFSZ VQ GPS BVDUJPO BU (JMEJOHoT Tue 2 August FINE ART & ANTIQUES AUCTION Gilding’s, 64 Roman Way, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 7PQ. Tel: 01858 410 414 www.gildings.co.uk

The excitement of a potential bargain, sought-after treasures and beauty beyond reach are never far away at the Market Harborough institution of Gilding’s auctioneers. And early this month a brooch comes under the hammer in one of Gildings periodical Fine Art & Antiques sales which truly exemplifies the national standing of the auction house, together with its local reputation as a trusted expert – not to mention the potential of your very own jewellery box! The brooch, by Victorian designer and architect William Burges, was discovered in the

jewellery box of Jill Cousins of Market Harborough, just hours after she meant to dispose of it locally “perhaps for £10.” Jill then saw the brooch described by BBC Antiques Roadshow jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn as his ‘most wanted’ item, and took it to Gilding’s to confirm her suspicions – leading to what Munn described as his ‘Tutankhamun Moment’. Described as ‘one of the most important art historical objects ever to be seen’ on the popular antiques show, it has been provisionally valued by Mr. Munn at £10,000 – a thousand times beyond Jill’s expectations!

The Vikings are Coming 5IF JOWBTJPO CFHJOT BU 3PDLJOHIBN $BTUMF SUN 28 & MON 29TH AUG It’s a Blood Feud that forms the basis of the Viking invasion at Rockingham Castle. The ever popular Vikings of Middle England descend on the Castle for the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Vikings invite you to witness the harsh and often ruthless world of the Viking age when law and justice were rough, life was cheap and feuds were settled in dramatic and brutal ways. Viking encampments were quickly established by the invaders who brought with them families and all the trades required by a fighting force on the move. Visitors are encouraged to wander through the fascinating camp to view traders at work, children at

play and witness family life from times past. Castle owner, James Saunders Watson said “This is a fantastically popular event with the very accurate representation of camp life along with the action on and off the battlefield. A great day out is on offer for visitors.

Bee A-Mazed… 8IBUoT BMM UIF #6;; BCPVU BU 8JTUPX .B[F

Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze opened on Saturday 16th July. Following a wildlife theme this year, the maze has been designed in the shape of a giant honey bee, complete with a hive. Hours of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike lie in store when exploring the giant maze created out of 8 acres of living maize crop. ”The number of bumble bees has declined by around 70% since the 1970s, and honey bee numbers have fallen by 15% over the past two years according to official UK Government figures. Our 2011 Honey Bee Maze is designed to raise awareness of the plight of our bee populations and their importance to the environment, as well as providing a fun and educational day out for the whole family.“ “However it is not just our bee populations that need our help,” explains Diana Brooks, owner of the Wistow Maze. “Many other species are also under threat and our quiz trail this year will highlight other wildlife such as the dormouse, red squirrel and otter, with clues to be found amongst the 3 miles of intricate pathways cut into the maize.” Winner of Leicestershire’s ‘Best Visitor Attraction’, the Wistow Maze attracts about

15,000 visitors on an annual basis. Situated just south of Leicester, the maze also incorporates high level bridges and viewing towers giving visitors stunning 3D panoramic views of the complex maze and beautiful surrounding countryside. t’s no coincidence that The Fox in Wilbarston, just a few miles out of Market Harborough on the Corby road, has scooped Pub of the Month plaudits for July, when country walks are in season and the views over the Welland Valley are at their most peaceful and inviting. And when you’ve finished your perambulations, the quintessential English village pub

is the next port of call, catering for your keen refreshment requirements and freshly whetted appetite. The Fox might date back to the 14th century, but Chris and Jess have just completed a refurbishment of the dining room, which now has a fresh yet traditional feel in keeping with the top-notch food on offer. The couple specialise in hearty, wholesome, locally sourced specialities such as home-made steak and kidney pudding or – our recommendation – rich, traditional faggots from West Lodge Farm (£6.95). Our whitebait starters (£4.95),

came from a little further afield, but it’s fresh in today and every day. From July, a new summer menu will be available featuring more seasonal treats, from fresh salmon to popular stirfries. And a menu of light bites is available all day, with unbeatable deals for OAPs and children’s meals at any time. No matter what day of the week, there’s a special attraction at the Fox. Thursday is steak night, and Jess reports that the two-for-£12 rump or sirloin deal is “going down a storm.” Tuesday is Curry Club, where just £6.25 will secure you a drink and an Indian meal to rival the fare at any local res-

taurant. Wednesday is games night, with everyone welcome to take on the Wilbarston Wobblers (“a drinking club with a running problem”), with crib on Monday and darts and skittles on alternate Wednesdays. And look out for live bands playing once a month between 4 and 7 on Sunday, immediately following The Fox’s popular traditional Sunday lunch. Booking is highly recommended. This engine option is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed electronically controlled manual gearbox (EGC). This gives the 308 the lowest emissions in its class. My only criticism is that the suspension is a bit spongy and the 308 oil-burner is not exactly fast (0-62 mph in 11.9 seconds), but the 62.7mpg average fuel economy, roomy interior, panoramic roof and accommodating load space more than make up for it. My test car also had a pair of removable third-row seats, transforming the 308 SW into a seven-seater – handy if you have lots of kids. All things considered, I’d recommend the new 308.
