eden end )FBSUGFMU GBNJMZ ESBNB CZ +# 1SJFTUMFZ Fri 3 - SAT 5 June Royal & Derngate’s Made in Northampton 2011 season continues to celebrate work by great British writers with a major revival of JB Priestley’s Eden End. This heartfelt family drama is directed by the theatre’s Artistic Director Laurie Sansom and takes to the Royal stage from Friday 3 to Saturday 25 June. Stella Kirby spent eight

years running away, leaving home to find her freedom as a celebrated actress. Now she has decided that the only role left to play is the prodigal daughter returned, hoping to discover herself in the warmth of ordinary life and the familiar surroundings of her childhood home. Set in 1912, Eden End slowly exposes the cracks in the lives of a respectable North-

ern family. A poignant look back at an Edwardian age of innocence before the start of the First World War, this subtle play movingly explores the secret heartache and disappointment of ambition unfulfilled. Charlotte Emmerson, who was recently seen as the Duchess in Laurie Sansom’s acclaimed production of The Duchess of Malfi at Royal & Derngate, takes on the role of Stella. The cast also includes Jonathan Firth as her childhood sweetheart Geoffrey Farrant. Eden End is one of Priestley’s most heartfelt family dramas, though rarely performed, and was last seen in London in Olivier’s final season for the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1974. In 2007 Laurie directed another forgotten gem by Priestley, The Glass Cage, at Royal & Derngate, and previously directed Priestley’s Dangerous Corner at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and the Garrick, West End.

eden end can be seen at Royal & Derngate from Friday 3 to Saturday 25 June. Tickets – priced from £27 to £12 – can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

The Pirates of Penzance (JMCFSU BOE 4VMMJWBOoT GVOOJFTU DPNJD PQFSB 8TH June - 3rd July First performed in 1879 ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is the funniest and most popular of all the comic operettas written by Gilbert and Sullivan. This is the hilarious tale of soft-hearted pirates, bungling policemen, a band of husband-hungry sisters, an impossibly pompous Major-General and a hopelessly moral hero. Set them adrift on the high seas and you’ve got one of the most enchanting, funny and best loved English musicals of all time. The show includes some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous compositions including

Poor Wand’ring One, the lugubrious A Policeman’s Lot Is Not A Happy One and the tongue-twisting I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major-General.

‘The Pirates of Penzance’ was the first production staged at Kilworth House Theatre in 2007 and received huge acclaim from its audiences: The show is once again directed by Mitch Sebastian with musical direction by Matthew Freeman - the creative team responsible for our 2007 production plus ‘Oklahoma!’, ‘Crazy For You’, ‘Guys & Dolls’ and ‘The Opera Show’.

Bane " IJMBSJPVT XBML PO UIF EBSL TJEF XJUI äMN OPJS TQPPG friday 1 July The one-man comedy spoof Bane comes to The Core at Corby Cube on Friday 1 July, a dark screwball comedy playing with the conventions of American film noir. Hired hand Bruce Bane works the mean streets of pulp fiction in Joe Bone’s highoctane one-man film parody. As he goes about his shadowy business down back alleys and eerie sidewalks, he shoots from the hip and asks questions later. This award winning quick-fire comedy is bought to boiling point with just his body, his voice and a live guitar soundtrack from Ben Roe. Expect action drama and comedy in this potent cock-

tail, a drink best served cold as Bruce Bane turns up the heat... Featured on Claudia Winkleman’s Art Show on BBC Radio 2, Bane is best described as a film performed by one person, with no props and set, using a live musical backing and sound effects to conjure the scene, and multiple character switching to create a filmic tapestry on stage. Bane enjoyed a total sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2010 where it was met with a sweep of five star reviews. Awards garnered by the show include Fringe Review’s Outstanding Theatre Award and ThreeWeeks’ Editors Choice Award.

However, there are two important bonuses to Rory’s latest tour, namely Hattie Hayridge – a very cool

Fly like a bird (PJOH HMJEJOH GPS UIF äSTU UJNF QSPWFT BO VOGPSHFUUBCMF FYQFSJFODF GPS %FSFL )BNNPOE In 2005, Russell Cheatham, a member of the Gliding Centre just outside Husbands Bosworth, set a UK record by completing a 1022 km journey over the UK countryside, starting and finishing his epic journey here on the high Leicestershire plain. My own task for the day is somewhat more modest - to overcome my ridiculous paranoid fear of sitting in a tiny fibre-glass bubble half a mile up in the sky, with no means of propulsion... while achieving the ambition that has run through the mind of every daydreaming schoolkid. To be able to fly like a bird. First I visit the huge dieselpowered drum winch at the end of the airfield and watch a glider on the end of mile-long cable lift off into the perfect blue. Sean the winchman tells me it’s the best gliding day of the year so far: cold overnight so the warm sun will now be heating the fields and creating pockets of warm air (think lava lamp!) which I’ll soon be riding. Gulp. Fully briefed by an instructor on thermals and ratios of glider height against the distance it’s possible to soar. When we came to the safety equipment I looked at the parachutes with some concern. “No, no,” laughs Jonathan Tipler, my instructor for the day. “In 17 years of

aloft under the clouds, before demonstrating the controls and letting me repeat the excercise using joystick myself . He’s been up here thousands of times. But only now do I understand why he and all the other club members are so hooked on the sensation: it’s an unforgettable experience, catching updrafts, soaring and dipping and banking like a huge, silent albatross.

Where to Canoe2? %FSFL )BNNPOE UBLFT IJT GBNJMZ GPS B QBEEMF EPXO UIF JEZMMJD /FOF It was on the last sunny weekend of last summer that we first set out to canoe down the Nene from the Canoe2 base at Ditchford Lock to Ringstead, through unspoilt countryside. It was a gentle paddle of some three or four hours, with many stops for refreshments and picnics, ending up feeling close to nature and closer still as a happy family unit who had learnt to paddle as one! Just one problem: when Richard from Canoe2 came to pick us up in his Land Rover, he mentioned that the next stretch of river out toward Oundle and on to Peterborough was, if anything, even more serene and beautiful. Maybe he says it to all the punters who hire a canoe, because it certainly sent us scuttling back! This time, we set afloat at the ancient Nine Arches Bridge at Islip, and headed off again in a broad-bottomed canoe four, into the tranquil Northamp-

tonshire countryside. We saw a heron, ducklings, swans, birds and rival fishermen catching fish in the river, which meanders slowly through open fields and woodland without so much as a towpath for company. No kidding, this stretch of countryside makes the Cotswolds look like Piccadilly Circus, and compares favourably with the Loire Valley. Thanks to some careful planning, we pulled up finally on the great green lawn set out before the King’s Head in Wadenhoe, where they’re used to canoeists dropping in (and where we passed on Canoe2’s details to four families instantly sold on the idea). At this point, we called it a day after some four or five gentle miles; but fellow rowers continued after a pint, ultimately heading for Oundle and a night in Canoe2’s luxuriously appointed yurt at Barnwell, or else one of the roomy, wonderfully equipped bell tents which can be built into any canoeing pack-

age heading through Ditchford Lock, Barnwell, Wadenhoe or Fotheringhay. All the feedback suggests nights of adventure, close to the river and untamed nature (not to mention The Falcon at Fotheringhay). We’ll be back again, for sure.

hat a pleasure it is to walk into the Red Lion to be greeted by the very best kind of landlord – a local man who loved this, his favourite pub, so much, he simply had to take it over when it fell on hard times. “I’d worked behind several bars around the town, says Simon Garlick, “but with the Red Lion I just had to put my money where my mouth was, and set about restoring the place to its

former glory – which is to say, as the best pub for beer and food and atmosphere in the whole area. The good news is, Simon and his partner Suzanne are getting it right. Three months in, it’s easy to see the upturn in business and quality, the return visits and customers coming in on recommendation rather than simply being drawn in by the exterior refurb and interior signs of TLC. Head chef Jamie Allsopp has been a cornerstone of the Red Lion’s revival, helping to support Simon and Suzanne’s ethos of providing a high-quality dining experience at a reasonable

price. Together, the pair have produced a menu that tries to champion produce from local suppliers... though, let’s face it, the sea is a little further away! They even order ingredients in small quantities and have several deliveries per week from each supplier, which ensures everything is always fresh. So what’s great on the all-new summer menu? For starters, it’s hard to beat the Thai-style clams in coconut milk with coriander and chilli (£6.45) – although it’s a rare treat to find a whole, balanced vegetarian section on the menu rather than a few tactical necessities. We followed up with Slow-roasted pork

belly with minted crème fraiche sauce, with peas and pancetta (£11.95). However, such was the rich aroma and unexpected bursts of flavour emanating from our respective plates, a half-time switch was arranged so as to report objectively on the baked trout on crushed new potato salad (£11.50) which sets capers and watercress in a whole new light. This is great. The Red Lion is back!

However, according to British Car Auctions (BCA), prices on soft tops have remained cool, despite record temperatures and the driest spring in years. It means anyone thinking of buying a convertible could still get a great deal. For less than ÂŁ5,000 in recent weeks, buyers have driven away some fantastic convertibles at BCA sales, such as the Ford StreetKa Luxury, BMW Z3, Alfa Romeo Spider, Mazda MX5, Volvo C70 and Mini Cooper. Beetle and Mercedes SLK models become affordable. These good values won’t be around forever, so now could be the time to buy that dream convertible. However, if buying second hand isn’t your thing then you could do a lot worse than checking out the latest 9-3 Convertible from Saab. The car reflects Saab’s leading role in the premium convertible segment and is the product of more than 25 years’ experience in designing four-seater, four season soft tops that are as practical as they are stylish. The 9-3 2.0T Aero convertible I had on test looked stunning in white with its contrasting black hood. Well-balanced proportions and a purposeful stance endow the car with a strong, dynamic character that, roof up or down, echoes its fun-to-drive appeal. The interior provides accommodation of four adults and shares

the cockpit feel and driver-focused themes of the Saloon and SportWagon. The 210bhp turbo powertrain crammed into the two door, auto model, offers excellent refinement and driveability. Even with an auto ‘box the Saab’s traditional strengths of high torque for strong, mid-range pulling power are present. This makes for swift and safe overtaking. That said, the powerful lump doesn’t deliver cheek rippling acceleration from a standing start. Far

from it. It does, however, provide a level of responsive performance in keeping with the chassis’s excellent dynamics. The impressive looks of the latest Saab 9-3 Convertible radiate power, dynamic performance and great strength; all elegantly packaged with a Scandinavian design flair that ensures the lines are clean and flowing, but never cold or clinical. It is an open top car that looks like a unique model in its own right, free from any awkward styling compromises.

.0503*/(

In fact the car looks just as good, top up or top down - effortlessly exchanging the looks of a coupé for those more akin to a roadster. The automatic soft-top operates entirely at the push of a single button and deploys fully in just 20 seconds. Handily, in the event of a sudden shower, it can be raised while on the move at speeds up to 18 mph. Inside, the driver-focused cabin features a main instrument panel that gently arcs round the driver. The controls are all logically grouped; those most frequently used being nearest to hand and closest to the driver’s natural field of vision. The short gearshift lever is just a hand span away, while the main dials are recessed in traditional Saab fashion. They are white on black and softly illuminated in green - a very easy-on-the eye colour choice for night driving. A particularly neat innovation is the ‘disguised’ handbrake, which is elegantly integrated in the edging trim of the centre console. It looks good, but feels slightly fragile. It probably isn’t – it’s just the plastic creaks a bit when you grip it. But high quality materials, including the use of Hydroblox, the first water repellent seat upholstery to be fitted to a convertible, make up for it. A polyester membrane lines the underside of the textile seat covering in order to prevent water penetration. This is a particularly useful feature for a convertible if you are caught in a shower of rain. Saab has a reputation for comfortable seats and the flagship 9-3 Convertible doesn’t disappoint. The well-shaped front

seats have been specially designed for the Convertible. They provide easy entry/exit for rear seat passengers by simply lifting a lever on the outboard corner of the back-rest, which then folds down, allowing the entire seat to be easily pushed forward. The movement is spring-loaded and requires only a light pressure to move the seat. Safety-wise, the 9-3 Convertible has achieved a maximum five star rating. In addition to a full complement of occupant safety systems, Saab has installed pop-up rear roll bars, which are recessed behind the rear head restraints. They are released by a small pyrotechnic charge when the car’s electronic ‘brain’ detects the onset of a rollover. It is programmed to have the bars deployed and locked in position by the time the car is at 90 degrees to the ground. Just as important, all four seat-belt pretensioners are activated at the same time, to firmly locate any belted occupants in their seats. Reassuring, or what? So, if you want to shop around for a safe, comfortable, stylish, open top motor - and you have the cash to splash on a new car - then a Saab showroom wouldn’t be a bad place to start looking. Top of the class 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ UFTUT UIF "VEJ " The Audi A1 looks set to continue its dominance of the awards circuit as it celebrates its fifth title of the year – Best Small Car at the 2011 Fleet World Honours, which were held recently. The A1’s Best Small Car Fleet World award joins the prestigious Car of the Year and Supermini of the Year awards from What Car? magazine, Best Small Hatchback from Parkers New Car Awards and Best Luxury Small Car from the CarBuyer Awards. Audi’s success with the A1 could be down to its sheer good looks, but I suspect it’s more to do with the brand’s reputation for attention to detail and quality. It might not be the cheapest supermini, but Audis are always strong performers on the used market – and that will balance the books.

_a^ R^] pOsiTiVe • looks • satisfying drive • efficient negaTiVe • boot space

WOW June 2011

Prices for the A1 start from £13,420 and go to £20,710 for the top of the range 1.4 TFSI 182bhp model. My test model was the 1.4 TFSI 120bhp Sport S tronic, with an on the road price of £17,120. However, a list of options fitted to the press demo, including heated door mirrors, electric climate control, and multi-function steering wheel with gear shift-paddles inflated the cost to over £18k. It’s obvious that Audi is chasing a modern customer group with the new car. The German firm admits it is targeting a young, urban, lifestyleoriented public. It makes sense; there was gap in the market for Audi and it has plugged it. It is the first premium car in the subcompact segment – a true, fully-fledged Audi – with sporting good looks. The interior of the A1 is surprisingly roomy with a clean, clear control layout. Modern materials and colours emphasise the youthful character of the A1 and Audi even offers

colour-customisation - from the air vents to the LED interior lights and seats. There are even a variety of paint finishes from which to choose for the roof arch. The only drawback is the boot. It is small, and it backs up what Audi says about its target market. No family, or even a single parent, is going to get their young child’s pushchair and paraphernalia in there. Even if you’re without kids, a big shop will probably overwhelm the boot’s capacity. Behind the wheel, the agile chassis and the powerful 1.4 TFSI engine makes for a very satisfying drive. The steering is ultra-direct and, thanks to excellent weight distribution, and good electronic stabilisation gadgetry, the handling is precise and safe. The new A1 also sets new efficiency standards. For instance, the 120bhp TFSI engine follows the downsizing principle – it substitutes turbocharging for displacement and draws its fuel through direct injection

units. With a 0-62mph sprint of 8.9 seconds, a top speed of 126mph and fuel consumption averaging 54.3mpg, you realise the technology isn’t just hype. The A1 is available with the seven-speed S tronic dualclutch transmission, which shifts very quickly, comfortably and with no detectable interruption to the flow of power. Operated automatically or manually, the S tronic ‘box adds another layer of pleasure to what is an already fun car to drive. It also has another plus point – it further reduces fuel consumption. Apart from a bigger boot, and maybe a lower price-tag, could you ask for more?. . flexibility, enhanced muscular stamina and balance, a stronger heart, and better physique or figure. Apart from this, swimming also works as a fast and effective remedy for healing muscles. Swimming also helps in weight control and can relieve your mind from stress and tension, fuelling your energy level to a large extent. This is will keep you in perfect shape, physically as well as mentally. Swimming can be very beneficial to your heart, lungs, and muscles.
