THURSDAY 11 NOvembeR At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The Two Minute Silence is observed on Armistice Day, the day which marks the end of the First World War. At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance, and this two minute tribute, are as important as ever. The Royal British Legion

has always supported the traditional Remembrance Sunday services and the customary Two Minute Silence on that day. As the national custodian of Remembrance, the Legion also believes that when 11th November (Armistice Day) falls on days other than Sundays - on working days - Remembrance should be brought into the everyday life of the nation on those days as well. More than 12,000 British Servicemen and women have been killed or injured on active service since 1945. Each year the nation supports The Royal British Legion’s charity work through the Poppy Appeal. The 2009 Poppy Appeal is emphasising the need to help the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces and their families – today and for the rest of their lives. For their sake, wear a poppy.

Sir Terry Wogan recently announced live on BBC Radio 2 BBC Children in Need’s record breaking total of £39 million. Thanks to additional donations from fundraisers and lovers of the bear, BBC Children in Need have watched November’s telethon total of £20.3 million rise to £39million, putting the charity in line for an historic record breaking total. Today, in the second of four grant rounds £10.9 million will be allocated to projects around the UK to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. Successfully awarded projects include Carers Support Merton in London who are receiving a grant of £115k to provide support to young carers to help decrease

isolation and alienation. This is just one of 415 newly awarded projects which will work to positively change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people under 18 across the UK. The BBC’s recent Strategy Review identified events that bring communities and the nation together as one of the five editorial priorities for the BBC. BBC Children in Need is a prime example of one of those great national occasions that people enjoy watching together and taking part in as a community...

Sat 4 Dec tO SuN 16 JaN 2011 Pantomime at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal will enter another and very exciting dimension this year as television personalities Stephen Mulhern and Gray O’Brien lead the cast, alongside a very unusual 3D co-star, in Aladdin. Known to millions of television viewers for his role of businessman, and Liam Connor’s love rival Tony Gordon in Coronation Street, Gray O’Brien plays Abanazar who will try to thwart poor Aladdin at every opportunity! Gray first appeared in Coronation Street in 2007 and last year was crowned ‘Villain of the Year’ at the British Soap Awards.

Gray says “I’m looking forward to working with Stephen and the rest of the cast and to performing pantomime at the Theatre Royal which has a tremendous reputation for staging a great Christmas show. This production of Aladdin, complete with the 3D effects, is very exciting and I can’t wait to take on the role of another baddie. Look out Nottingham!” Gray added. Aladdin has all of the elements of traditional family pantomime but with the added surprise of an array of outstanding and unmissable visual effects, including a 3D Genie! Wearing 3D glasses at points throughout the pantomime, you can see

the magical Genie rise from his lamp and move around the auditorium, rub the magic lamp as it hovers right in front of your nose and further 3D wizardry will transform the stage into a 3D cave of riches, where Aladdin finds his fortune. The show also features a wonderful 3D magic carpet ride sequence and other visual surprises.

Whole lott-a faith (SSM 1PXFS SVMFT BHBJO 0,

FRI 5 NOVEMBER With her gigantic quiff and flamboyant wardrobe, Paloma Faith appeared at first to be a chip off La Roux’s block, but then she only went and released WOW’s retrospective Album of 2009, ‘Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful?’, which gathered up her burlesque background together with a huge disco strut and a rocky capability that frankly trumped all the Rouxs, Boots and Florences of this parish. Smoke and Mirrors. Stone Cold Sober. New York.

Expect a vast show. Cut from straighter cloth, Pixie Lott has less oodles of irony built into in her tunes – no pirate hats here – which also range into that familiar retro jerky beat beloved of La Roux, Marina and the New Grrl Power crew. Hmm, it is just possible that her target audience is younger than us lot. Almost unbelievably. Fri 5 PALOMA FAITH + ELIZA DOOLITTLE Mon 29 PIXIE LOTT De Montfort Hall Leicester

?d]Z A^RZ bcPa Up-and-coming Leicester actor Nicholas Banks plays Nicholas Chatman in the critically acclaimed Punk Rock at Curve this month… F>F Punk Rock comes to Curve with a big reputation. How would you describe the attraction of the play, firstly as an actor... =1 Punk Rock is a piece of fantastic new writing by Simon Stephens: challenging, engaging and phenomenally fun to perform. I instantly related to all of the characters, either because I saw something of myself in them when I was 17 at Oakham School or because I knew students exactly like the characters portrayed. F>F And secondly for audiences. =1 Everyone can relate to those teenage years; we can all empathise with the social

and academic pressure that teenagers experience. It’s a time of great anxiety, too,

all of which can lead someone to question the sense of ‘me’. It’s a time of self discovery, and it’s exciting to be taken along by the characters’ journeys on stage. F>F Prior to Punk Rock, what was your performing highlight? =1 The highlight of my career so far was playing to a full house at the Old Vic in the 24-hour plays of 2010 – where writers, directors, actors and producers have only 24 hours to write, perform and produce six new plays! F>F Tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to since you left the city. =1 I moved to Warwickshire, but still have lots of family in Leicester, and spent time here – especially watching Leicester Tigers! – when I was a boarder at Oakham School. Then I studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 2009. ‘Punk Rock’ was my first job last year, which was very lucky. F>F And your ambitions for the future?

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

Let There be rock -JHIU BOE TIBEF BOE UIF JOTBOF GBNF HBNF Fri 19 NOvember Rock photographer Nick Elliott has a fabulous CV stretching back over 20 years in the biz, and a portfolio bulging with intense, personal portraits of people that you could never mistake for ordinary members of the public – for these are rock stars.

His images are full of light, because his godlike subjects live in the limelight and seem to feel at home basking in the reflection of a lens. But Nick’s photographs aren’t always images of adoration: his opportunist lens can cut right through to these mere mortals’ souls. “Nick is an extraordinary

Staged by the Royal Institute of British Architects, this celebration of the new will showcase innovative and enduring architecture from the 1950s, through the Swinging ‘60s and stark, skybound ‘70s and so on up to the present day. rom rehearsal to the concert, Young Voices offers an experience that children remember for ever and each year many are inspired to begin their own musical journeys. Young Voices has been running 14 years and the spectacular tours have featured an impressive array of top talent including Alexandra Burke, Joss Stone, Des’ree, VV Brown and Katherine Jenkins. “I did Young Voices twice and it was the most amazing time of my life” said Alexandra Burke. The 2010 line up is looking stronger then ever and includes Dionne Bromfield, All Angels and Island Records’ hottest new talent, Josh Osho. 70,000 singers will take part across the UK with each choir formed of a mix of local schools. “It’s fantastic to give these kids the chance to perform with some

inspirational artists; it’s incredible the children’s voices really uplift each and every venue” commented Oritse Williams from JLS. A host of studies have proven the benefits of introducing children to music at an early age and the positive impact this has on their development. The organizers of Young Voices are

adamant that every pupil in the UK should have this opportunity as “the potential benefits are huge.” Children involved in Young Voices grow in confidence and develop many other fundamental skills which aid their learning throughout their education. ?[PhX]V cWT ;^]V 6P\T Comedienne Josie Long squeezes WOW’s Derek Hammond into her busy schedule…

<

ulti-talented comedienne Josie Long took time off from her frantic schedule of gigs, projects, knowledge-seeking and moral self improvement to speak to WOW. The first question was simple: where to start? This foughtful Sarf Londoner did stand-up at 14, obligatory time at Oxford University, won newcomers awards at Edinburgh, hit the TV and radio running, and now she’s trying to change the world. To get to the bottom of what she’s up to, best look at the many different elements of Josie’s working day… F>F Have you got a gig tonight? 9; Yes, I’m currently in the car driving down from a gig in Darlington to one in Brighton tonight. Luckily, it’s the only pair of dates that are this awful! And right now we’re between Northampton and Milton Keynes! F>F And you’re writing a book. 9; Yes, it’s like a tour book with lots of fun little trips – how to live a more imaginative life in England. It’s about mucking around with your surroundings to create events, like the situationists. There’s going to be a treasure hunt in there, too. F>F What’s next on TV? Are you still writing for (teen drama) Skins? 9; Nah, I’m a bit old for Skins now! They’re so good at employing talented young writers. I had such a good experience writing for it. I’m always pitching bits and bobs – you’re always hustling, with television. F>F And radio? 9; It’s a very direct way of getting things

made at high quality. I’ve got a producer that I work with and we made a Radio 4 series [‘All the Planet’s Wonders] that I’m so proud of. I love making things for Radio for – I really love the fact that they’re made now, and people can still listen to them. F>F And changing the world? Your humour’s noticeably less fluffy these days. 9; I’ve spent the last year trying to get more politicised, more involved with activism; but I’m still really just writing about things that interest and affect me. I’ve been doing voluntary work at Medicine Sans Frontieres, and I’m setting up a protest fund to help some people get through university. I gave Ed Vaizey an anti-cuts message in crossstitch last week! F>F You were perhaps the only act at Edinburgh this year with an overt mention of politics!

9; Well, I’m hoping that’s going to change. I think it’s important to harbour some kind of idealism, and that’s what my latest show is all about – making choices about harming the environment and buying goods produced in sweatshops, for example. It’s very complicated trying to work out how to become a human being that you’re proud of! F>F And surely you don’t have time to do anything else? 9; Well, I do a cartoon for Alan Moore’s Dodgem Logic magazine, which is based in Northampton. Check it out at www. dodgemlogic.com. More importantly, Deering knows how to insert his own amusing lines into hits

A frail, troubled child about Owens’s age, Abby emerges from her heavily curtained apartment only at night and always barefoot, seemingly immune to the bitter winter cold. A new Sunday tradition -VODIUJNF BU UIF 8BUFSGSPOU GSPN QN UP QNe

There’s nothing like a generous cut of roast topside beef with Yorkshire pudding to make a wintery Sunday suddenly special. Or, no less traditional but just a little more adventurous, how does homemade toad in the hole sound – with wild boar sausage and port & onion gravy? Or how about chicken, parsnip and honey casserole – all served up with a choice of potatoes and lashings of fresh vegetables?

There are eternal favourites and more adventurous options available at Harborough’s canalside Waterfront restaurant; but as winter slides toward the season to be jolly, it’s highquality, hearty dishes that really hit the spot, whether you’re choosing from the main fixedprice menu, the recommended vegetarian options or the sensibly priced, wholly appealing children’s menu. It would be easy to pay dou-

ble or even triple for this quality of cooking, fine meat and ingredients, but at the Waterfront two courses are just £10.50, three for £13.50. The ambience is bustling and happy, set theatrically around the hubbub from the open-plan kitchen, with peaceful views outside across the chilly canal basin. Best of all, Sunday lunchtime at the Waterfront doesn’t end at 2pm or 3pm, but extends into the evening, when a

glass or two of Merlot always seem to fit the bill after a day of garden chores or long walks. No, skip that. Best of all is the choice of desserts on the specials board…

Festive Firenze 5SBEJUJPOBM USFBUT BOE UFNQUBUJPOT *UBMJBO TUZMF There’s no better time of year than the festive season to shrug off the cold and dark and head for historic Kibworth, seeking out the warm welcome and rich, cosy glow emanating from the twin local outposts of Florence – first Firenze, officially the finest restaurant in Leicestershire and Rutland, and now the up-and-coming Boboli. Seasonal dishes based around fresh, traditional fayre are no less than par for the course at Sarah and Lino Poli’s restaurants, but their big, warm winter dishes really have earned a special reputation: there’s lentils with cotecchino sausage, fabulous with game such as pheasant – or rich duck breast with it’s own mini lasagne.

“Auguroni” is the toast of the season – many best wishes! – yet more of which come true at dolci time. Featured at both Firenze and Boboli is Budino di Panettone: take the traditional Italian Christmas cake, panettone, all spiced and candied just as it should be, slice it up and coat it in yummy chocolate ingredients, and you have Italian Panettone Bread and Butter Pudding... to die for! Finally, you get to ceremoniously dunk your homemade Cantuccini in Donato d’egli Antinori, traditionally the wine of holy week, now served chilled. Hmm, almond biscuits and Christmas wine – even better with a dollop of mascarpone on top!

of the Alfa Romeo Brera quite pleasing, and it got looks of admiration from some people, but it wasn’t quite the sports car I thought it would be. Ride quality is not bad but the Alfa feels a tad cumbersome for such a small car and on bends it seems determined to lapse into understeer. It’s fun to drive, don’t get me wrong, but there’s

traditional, sporty way. There’s even an oil temperature gauge and a very fashionable starter button. Add the fact that there’s plenty of adjustment in both the driver’s seat and the steering column, it’s also an easy car to achieve a comfortable driving position in. Of course this Alfa Romeo is by no means a family car

It was a hassle fitting the child seats in place and my wife had to move her front seat forward quite a way, but nonetheless, everyone got in. Even the 300-litre boot just managed to swallow a folded pushchair. Mind you, I did have to shut the boot lid a few times to make sure it stayed in there, but the important thing for me was that the Brera proved versatile enough to be a big boy’s toy, as well as have a family day out in. But what exactly is under the bonnet of the Alfa Romeo Brera? Well, it has a 1750 TBi petrol unit which has

_a^ R^] POSITIVE • Attractive • Fun • Good Engine • Image NEGATIVE • Won’t retain value

variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, a turbocharger and an ingenious ‘scavenging’ control system. This, says Alfa Romeo, improves air-flow through the engine and cuts down on turbo lag. The results are impressive with the 1.7-litre engine generating 197bhp and 320Nm of torque from 1,400rpm. Despite the tempting engine and the lovely looks, the Brera has intimidating competition in the guise of the Audi TT, and the Nissan 370z. BMW’s 1-Series Coupe and Peugeot’s bizarre RCZ are also potential rivals. It also won’t retain its value as steadfastly as its premium brand rivals, but starting at around £25,000, the Brera 1750 TBi is not bad value for money. Its running costs shouldn’t be too expensive either. The CO2 emissions are only 189g/km and I managed, even with a family on board, around 34mpg on the combined cycle. So, if you’re after a good looking, sporty car and you want something a little different then the Alfa Romeo Brera could be right up your street. The car makes you happy – it feels a sexy car to be in, and that, I suspect, is why people will buy it..

However, as we all know, there’s more to buying a new car than selecting the model and colour of dream car that catches your eye. The economy offered by the Mazda2 is remarkable even for its class, and the Mazda5’s 1.6 diesel engine will help to significantly trim your motoring bills. At Northampton Mazda, they don’t just have cars that catch your eye and make sound economic sense, but also the

friendly staff and finance offers to help ideas take shape. Right from the welcoming greeting from sales manager Chris Lovell, the friendly and personal service offered by this exclusive Mazda-only dealership is apparent. As he introduces the wonderful Mazda3 and its slick sibling Mazda6, Chris’s pride in the product beams through. In a series of joyful test-drives available to any guest at the dealership, that pride is readily explained – together with Mazda’s enticing ‘Dance with the Devil’ tagline. And it’s a pride that runs throughout Northampton Mazda. Chris’s colleague John Stanley explains the attractions and benefits of the 0% finance / 50% deposit-50% finance deals available – and the generous PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) offers which can instantly wipe up to £1,250 off the price of a new Mazda. In the on-site workshop, after-

sales expert Philip Lane is the man who guarantees your new Mazda remains in as-new condition for years to come. And finally, we’re greeted with a warm handshake from general manager Manjit Kang, whose role ensures no guest will leave this dealership with anything but a glowing impression…

And a guaranteed yearning to make one of these dream cars your very own. MazDa NOrthaMptON MOtOrs Riverside Retail Park, Fortune Close, Northampton NN3 9HZ Tel: 01604 405225 www.motorparks.co.uk

Derek Hammond on the trail of Leicester’s Regency celebrity

8

n death, just as in life, the reputation and popularity of historical figures can wax and wane, changing with contemporary fashions and moods. For example, King George IV’s uncrowned consort Queen Caroline, popular with the masses at the time of her death, then spent 150 years viewed as a vulgar harridan before emerging as a more sympathetic figure with many surprising parallels to our own more recent Princess of Wales. Such is the case with another Regency figure, Leicester’s notorious Daniel Lambert, well respected by many rich and powerful people who met

48

him, though none proved quite influential enough to prevent Lambert entering history as nothing more than a man who weighed 52 stone. Daniel Lambert was a jailer by trade, working with his father at the small county ‘Bridewell’ prison, which they kept neat and clean for the inmates, at the cutting edge of new, humane prison conditions. Of country stock, Daniel was a strong swimmer as a child, healthy and athletic, and became a noted breeder of cocks, setters and pointers. In 1793, aged 23, he turned the scale at 32 stone despite his modest appetite, remaining active in field sports

into the new century, when the fame of the kindly 50-stone raconteur spread nationwide. Now Lambert bowed to his celebrity status, having a special carriage built to carry him to London, where he proved a draw at one shilling a time, entertaining guests at a Haymarket address at what might more cruelly be called a peep show. Every contemporary account of his personality underlines his wit and essential shyness, which must have made his “receiving visits of the curious” a painful necessity, either in Leicester Market Place or at Stamford Races, where his handbills were regularly distributed offering his company. And so it was in Stamford, after a star turn at the cockpit, that

Daniel Lambert died suddenly at the Waggon and Horses (near the site of the surviving George Inn, where his walking stick and portrait commemorate the great man). The removal of his body famously necessitated the demolition of a wall, and his burial in St Martin’s Churchyard involving a wheeled coffin, a graveside ramp and the help of 20 men. ‘In Remembrance of that Prodigy in Nature DANIEL LAMBERT, a native of LEICESTER who was possessed of an exalted and convivial Mind and, in personal Greatness had no COMPETITOR: He measured three Feet one Inch round the LEG and weighed FIFTY TWO STONE ELEVEN POUNDS. He departed this life on the 21st of June 1809 AGED 39 YEARS. As a testimony of Respect this Stone is erected by his Friends in Leicester.’ It’s good to report that Stamford Museum have replaced their grisly model of Lambert with a far more informative and sensitive display, properly commemorating this man “replete with anecdote, and of a lively turn of mind...with a choice selection of words, and a variety of subjects”.
