Peloponnesian War. Their method is simple – they refuse to have sex with their husbands and lovers. Naturally, tensions mount, frustrations erupt - and phalluses reach bursting point! In a specially commissioned script by David Stuttard, Aristophanes’ original work has been adapted to incorporate the modern world alongside the salacious spirit of Ancient Greece. Director, Mitch Mitchelson, complements this style by

combining his physical theatre background with circus performance. aod’s Artistic Director, Tamsin Shasha, contributes her skills as a physical performer and Classical actress. With a specially commissioned score (Simon McCorry) and set and costume design by Lucy Bradridge (Costume designer, Cirque de Soleil) the show is a fantastic comedy which brings a frictional gender war to a stunning climax. .

The Perfect Wife Roadshow tours to The Castle on Wed 15 Sep, 7.45pm. After seven years of marriage Lizzie realised she had turned into a bitch wife from hell. In fact, she used to feel she could have done a lot better for herself.

Not any more. Lizzie has saved her marriage. She has discovered “the key to happy ever after”. Her life has changed…Now she hopes to change yours. Following the huge success of her self help bible ‘The Subservient Wife: A Practical Guide to Seeing Your Husband as a Glass Half Full rather than Half Empty’, Lizzie is on a quest to rekindle the lost flames of married couples throughout the country. Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood directs an amazing company of actors and musicians in this extraordinary new staging of the classic musical. Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Chess has one of the greatest musical theatre scores of all time including One Night In Bangkok, Pity The Child, Anthem, You And I and, of course, I Know Him So Well which became a number one hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson. Two of the world’s greatest chess masters battle it out at the world chess championships but their greatest contest is for the love of one woman. Amidst political intrigue and international conspiracies, the American and the Russian fight to win the heart of Florence Vassy in a romantic triangle that mirrors the heightened passions of the Cold War all set to an explosive score by the composers of Mamma Mia and the lyricist of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.

MOn 27 SEP - SAT 2 OcT Much loved TV actor Todd Carty will bang two coconuts together in the UK Tour of Spamalot, joining the cast as Patsy. The musical, based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, comes to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate from Monday 27 September to Saturday 2 October. Todd Carty is well known as Tucker from the BBC TV children’s show Grange Hill which he starred in for five years and which resulted in his very own spin off series, Tuckers Luck. He also played central character Mark Fowler in EastEnders for 12 years and starred in The Bill as PC Kent. More recently he has reinvented himself as a director, and tried his hand at ice skating in Dancing On Ice. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot has been written by Python member Eric Idle and with a musical score created by Eric Idle and John Du Prez. Audiences all around the world have been roaring with laughter since Monty Python’s Spamalot won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005.

Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes which are catchier than the plague, including He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song (Reader’s Digest Poll 2009) Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. The show features the voice of Python star Eric Idle, as the voice of God. The Lady of the Lake will be played by Hayley Tamaddon, best known as Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale and as the winner of the latest series of Dancing On Ice. Comedian and Radio 4 presenter Marcus Brigstocke plays King Arthur. SPAMALOT is at the Derngate stage from Monday 27 September to Saturday 2 October. With the full force of a band as hungry as when they set out fifteen years ago (before they’d racked up 10 million record sales), Faithless released new album The Dance earlier this year. The Dance sees Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo reach the bar that their back-cat sets so high, and Maxi reckons its “chock-a-block with dance tunes which we hope will be the soundtrack to many Saturday nights for a while to

Their influence from being at the top of the pile for a decade and a half is easy to spot these days: think Calvin Harris’ recent number 1 or the countless tracks with a house groove, riff and rapper, Faithless’ signature sound adopted by many, bettered by none. Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won’t give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire, the school’s adorable art teacher, but she doesn’t want to get serious — or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating. Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there. caSt: Robin Williams, Daryl Sabara, Morgan Murphy, Naomi Glick, Dan Spencer GeNre: Comedy Drama directOr: Bobcat Goldthwait certiFicate: TBC ruNtime: 1 hour 38 minutes

Straight from the Edinburgh Festival, this Australian show heads to The Castle to make ordinary women feel extraordinary! The biggest Australian show since Priscilla, Busting Out! is a raucously entertaining, fun, funny, thoroughly theatrical, empowering and affirmative celebration of the female body. It’s created by Emma Powell and performed by Emma and Bev Killick - two of Australia’s most sensational performers. Emma’s career has been a glittering one in Musical Theatre (she played Rosie in the Australasian Tour of Mamma Mia) and Bev is one of Australia’s most celebrated female stand-ups. The show has been a fêted hit in Australia and New Zealand, famed for its

dynamic inclusivity it has now played to over 250,000 people. The audience play a

vital role in the proceedings (by appearing on a large on-stage screen and often actually on stage) which threatens, on occasions, to turn the entire theatre into an utterly disorderly house! Emma and Bev’s up-front and out-there breast-based contortions are intercut with rousing song and dance sequences, hilarious sketches, a shadow play and brilliant stand-up comedy. Yes, it’s a wild night out but as Australian commentators have pointed out Busting Out! is “an affirming lesson in

If you only go to 20 comedy gigs this month… with DJ Fontana body love and esteem without the soapbox” (The West Australian) and it “makes women feel good about themselves and their bodies” (Sunday Mail Adelaide). So, as Busting Out! re-asserts women’s ownership of their o w n breasts in their own terms …they satirise the female form as they celebrate it, and they parody conventional stereotypes. So it only remains to dust off the puns. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to give all your support to an outstanding pair of fullyrounded performers with ample talents. The Midlands’ Best Comedy Venue launches in Nottingham 5IF NVMUJ BXBSE XJOOJOH (MFF $MVC QSFQBSFT GPS B 4FQUFNCFS PQFOJOH XJUI B IPTU PG UPQ OBNFT WEdNESday 15 SEpTEMBER Nottingham’s brand new comedy and music venue, The Glee Club, opens its doors on Wednesday 15 September with an impressiveseason of award winning talent. In what amounts to a mini international comedy festival, the opening lineup includes such heavy hitters as grouchy Emmy award winning American Rich Hall (Sept 15), feisty, flirty Iranian comic Shappi Khorsandi (Sept 16) and Gina Yashere, the London born comedian of Nigerian parents currently making big waves in the US (Sept 17-18). They’re joined by Brit’ Mock The Week mainstay Andy Parsons (Sept 18), Irishman Andrew Maxwell (Sept 17), Canadian Mike Wilmot (Sept 17-18), and fast rising Scot Kevin Bridges (Sept 23), whose recent solo tour concluded with a sell out date at Glasgow’s 10,000 capacity Scottish Exhibition Centre. The Glee Club Nottingham is situated in Canal Street’s British Waterways Building and features a stylish ground floor cafe bar and 450 capacity main room as well as a 250 capacity space, ideal for more intimate one man and acoustic shows. There’ll be regular comedy shows two to three nights a week, plus special one offs and music shows. Downstairs, the beautifully appointed Cafe Glee serves pre show drinks and food and is open for lunch. Mark Tughan, founder of the The Glee Clubs, says: “We’re very excited to be opening a Glee in Nottingham. As a dedicated comedy and music venue, the entertainment

always takes centre stage for us, which is why we’re able to attract both fast rising new talent, but also established TV names from such series as Mock The Week, QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. “Acts like Andy Parsons, Rich Hall and Shappi Khorsandi are all great on television, but so much better live where they can really go for it. At The Glee Club, they get the opportunity to give more than just a soundbite or one liner as there’s no presenter cutting them short. Nor is there a nightclub DJ trying to drag them offstage either.”

Founded in 1994, the independently owned Midlands based Glee Club is widely recognised for their emphasis on presenting quality live comedy and music in a relaxed and friendly setting. With venues in Birmingham, Cardiff and, most recently, Oxford, The Glee has won the prestigious Best Venue award from influential comedy website Chortle a total of ten times, with The Glee Club Birmingham the current recipient of the Best Venue Award: Midlands and The East 2010. The Glee were also recently named as one of the Guardian’s Top 10 UK Comedy Venues. Combining the regular mixed

bill stand-up format of a compere and three acts with big name touring comedy shows, a list of those who have appeared at the Glee reads like a who’s who of today’s TV talent, and include such stars as Michael McIntyre, Peter Kay, Lee Evans, Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Rhod Gilbert, Dara O’Briain and Jack Dee.

:

eith, one of the most popular finalists of BBC reality talent show Any Dream Will Do, plays Joseph in a new UK tour of the smash-hit musical. It’s been three years since Keith first appeared on our TV screens with dreams of landing a major West End role. Unfortunately, the young Scot’s hopes were dashed in the final, when Essex-born Lee Mead pipped him to the post. “When I look back on Any Dream Will Do, I don’t think I was ready to do it then.” But Keith, who worked in his local Tesco in Dalkeith before the show, proved popular with TV audiences and has been in demand ever since – nowhere more than in his native Scotland. First came his performance in the 2007 Picnic in the Parliament in Edinburgh, quickly followed by his first major stage role

as the Narrator in the touring production of Joseph. Keith starred alongside fellow Any Dream Will Do contestants Craig Chalmers as Joseph and Chris Barton as Benjamin. Widely considered to be the strongest vocalist on Any Dream Will Do, Keith then set about recording his first solo album, This Time, released in September 2008. After a short promotional tour, Keith landed the lead role in Peter Pan at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen. Keith’s success continued into 2009 as the Narrator in Joseph and later as Aladdin at the King’s Theatre, Glasgow, as well as a second album, An Evening at the Musicals. “… In the two or three years that have gone by I have really grown up and am more prepared to take on a lead like Joseph now…”

Bill Kenwright, director of the new UK tour, finally cast Keith in the lead after seeing him a party. Surprisingly, Keith turned the role down at first but eventually realised it was exactly what he wanted to do. “Playing Joseph is better than I ever thought it would be.” Judging by the reaction, that’s exactly what the audience thinks, too!

A new exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum is showcasing a moving image work which focuses on the people and places of Rugby. Continuum features Stalking Horse, a new art work by Rob Pyecroft-Rainbow which involves the people of Rugby in both its own production and its reception in the gallery space. Using the town of Rugby as his inspiration, the artist has inventively taken photographic images over 360 degrees. The spectacle has drawn

people in and offered them the opportunity to participate in the project in their own way. The exhibition itself also gives visitors a measure of control over the work, as their movements in the gallery space trigger a series of images via interactive technology. The multi-media installation includes moving image, sound design, and sensor driven interaction. The work aims to open up the gallery space and create a strong sense of audience ownership through a direct engagement with the people of Rugby.

It also seeks to capture shared experiences in public and private places. The exhibition runs from 31 August to 31 October and has been co-commissioned by Rugby Art Gallery & Museum and Portland Green Cultural Projects. From the inside: performance, screen and the gallery space, an engaging exhibition of moving image installation works curated by Portland Green, is also showing at the gallery from 31 August to 31 October. From the inside:… is an exhibition of performance and moving image works by internationally renowned artists featuring famous performers including Sylvie Guillem and William Forsythe. Additionally, the film Jackson Pol-

lock, 1951 by Hans Namuth and Paul Falkenberg is available in an education space. Councillor Heather Timms, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for Culture, said: “These exciting and imaginative exhibitions present some highly engaging and thought-provoking works. I am sure that these unique shows will fascinate and absorb people.” admission is free of charge. The exhibition preview will be on Tuesday 31 august, 6.30-8pm. Apparently if we had visited on a day when Maria was on duty the offer of a cake was a strong possibility! That’s definitely an excuse for a revisit! Ready for our viewing Dean briefly guided us around the first show home - the 3 bed Maywood (although to us, it will always be remembered as - the pink house). Being left to our own devices, we wandered from room to room. A light and airy hallway led to a gorgeous kitchen, with of course all the necessary appliances. WOW meets Ade Edmondson, once Vivian of the Young Ones, and now leader of the revolutionary goodtime Bad Shepherds

?

ossible expectations of something manically comical are instantly quashed by the strange power of punk songs played on folk instruments. The oft-overlooked words are lent a new power, the anger and frustration is beautifully focused, and there’s a growing mountain of great critical feedback for the Bad Shepherds. Go click around the band’s net content: that’s our message. You’ll be won over to the distinct sound and warm humour of one of the folk scene’s unlikeliest characters: longtime comedian/ writer/ video director Ade Edmondson… F>F

Is our response to the music familiar to you? It seems you’re building up a cult following, but it must have involved a lot of work breaking down expectations of a more comical folk-punk, a la Vivian! 034 In are current set list we kick off with our version of ‘Anarchy in the UK’ – it starts with a rather haunting pipe solo, the rhythm slowly creeps in and then the lyrics start “I am an antichrist...” I can see people laugh in the audience. But as the song grows and the fiddle joins in to make the rhythm more menacing I see the laughers slowly start to nod their heads, and by the end of the song I can see a kind of beatific grin spreading over their faces – a kind of ‘wow/yeah/so that’s what they’re doing’. It’s a magical moment. I love it. We’re not po-faced. I think there’s an inherent humour in most punk lyrics anyway. But we’re better than a comedy band – we’re a joyous band.

30

WOW October September 2008 2010

F BH

F>F Who were your fave punk bands back in the day? And which of their songs do you think the BSs transform in the most surprising/uplifting way? (we don’t half dig ‘Down in the Tube Station at Midnight’, and never noticed Kraftwerk’s ‘The Model’ had submerged soul!) 034 ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’ is still my favourite album of all time. I was about 18 when punk happened, at Uni in Manchester. I saw a lot of punk bands that never made it, and I saw The Buzzcocks, once – I think Pete Shelley is one of the great all time songwriters. Tom Robinson was another favourite. And Paul Weller. It was a very exciting time for those of us who’d grown up on cock rock. Suddenly songs were actually about something. People were angry. People had things to say. F>F You must have been chuffed to be nominated for a legit folkie award. 034

Troy and Andy are proper folk musicians at the top of their game, who’ve been in the folk world for years. They know the ins and outs of the folk cliques, and they talk in hushed tones about ‘Folk Nazis’ – the kind of purists who hate any kind of deviation from ‘the tradition’. So we were very surprised and pleased to be nominated for ‘Best Live Act’ – it shows some kind of acceptance, and it’s always nicer to be included that excluded. F>F You’ve said before that “punk was the folk music of its day”…

808 */5&37*&8

034 What occurred to me is that punk and folk are both naive forms of music, they’re handed down rather than taught at academies. They share a love of protest songs (Anarchy in the UK, White Riot), songs of social comment (Sound of the Suburbs, Friday Night Saturday Morning), and story ballads (Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, Up The Junction). I love the instrumentation of folk music but I find a lot of the songs no longer relevant – songs about blacksmiths and sailors – so I think of The Bad Shepherds as a bloody good folk band that just choose their repertoire of songs from a more relevant era. F>F Have the Bad Shepherds taken over your life, or do you have more comedy/ writing/performing/acting in the pipeline? 034 The Bad Shepherds take up most of my life, we did 100+ gigs last year, and we’re doing the same this year. I love it, it makes me very happy. We’d like to have a few foreign adventures – a few folk festivals in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Australia. I just want to have fun until I die I’d be happy to be a Bad Shepherd until the grim reaper knocks on the door.. The town centre is closed to traffic make way for a huge number of acclaimed international street artists who will take over the High Street and a number of roads surrounding to make a colourful, vibrant and frankly silly free day out for all the family. Looking at the work of the NUBSO union and its predecessors, you can discover all about the 1905 Raunds march, when 115 men marched from Raunds to parliament, you can even have a go at marching the route yourself “in a marcher’s shoes. There’s also an enticing taste of the St. Crispin’s Fair – although

now there’s such a positive new buzz of civic pride around town, surely there’s a strong argument for going the whole hog next year, and bringing back all the historic fun of the fair! ;Tc{b V^ V^]V^^i[X]V WOW kids turn a blind eye to any thoughts of ‘back to school’, as they head for the hills to explore the past and present world of Foxton Locks.

Hidden away on the Grand Union Canal amid rural Leicestershire’s rolling hills, Foxton’s steep ‘staircase’ of ten locks is the largest in the country, a masterful engineering feat for 1810 – and still an irresistible attraction for kids of all ages. Recent Lottery-funded developments have even added to the allure of the locks, all part of a grand scheme to rebuild the historic Inclined Plane Boat Lift of 1900 – a 100-metre-long, steam-driven pulley system which enabled barges to steer into vast tanks at the top and bottom of the hill and, once counterbalanced, to be smartly winched up the long

45-degree slope, bypassing the busy locks bottleneck. A long-disused arm of the canal has already been reopened, a spectacular modern lookout post added by Architect, Micheal Lavender, - and new car-parking and facilities added as the Inclined Plane slope has been cleared for action – again, irresistible for clambering kids! The museum in the old Inclined Plane engine house is definitely worth a look for more hands-on canal history; but the best fun to be had is simply as a wide-eyed spectator (‘gongoozlers’ the old boatsmen call us!) as amateur sailors lock horns

with the locks, straining over winding gear and heavy watergates, releasing rushes of thousands of gallons of water into the side-ponds. Kids will want to visit the Locks shop for bags of stale bread for the ducks – check out also the old-school ‘roses and castles’ artwork – and so to one of the excellent pubs for traditional canalside refreshment, possibly a well-deserved snack or meal in the Foxton Locks Inn’s idyllic garden or enclosed all-weather patio. Wow kids end their perfect adventure with well deserved yummies, served at the Boat House and overlooking the canal.

Saffron " åBWPVS PG *OEJBe BOE OPX /FQBM We were intrigued when excited word reached us regarding a new Nepalese chef installed at Saffron, last year’s Midland Curry Awards winner. It’s true: the old standards of top-quality, fresh ingredients and spices remain, only now augmented by a new page in the menu featuring Himalayan specialities. And we’re pleased to report the new combination is a great success. With all due respect for our eternal tawa and fusion-style fishy (prawn, monkfish, salmon) balti favourites, it’s a treat to find completely new sub-continental options on any menu, and so were won over by the prospect of chef’s specialities including mardi macha (saffron swordfish) and Everest butter chicken. There’s a great veggie choice available, too. Reportedly popular in the mountainous regions of Nepal, the nutty-flavoured honey-andsaffron mitho sawdilo (£9.45) certainly goes down a storm in more local postcodes – ideally suited to mix-and-match with the hotter, sweeter yogurt and chilli-laced chicken hariyo khursani (£7.45). A vibrant atmosphere, an allround feelgood experience, and something a little different.

<>C>A8=6 WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.5i SE Lineatronic 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ .PUPSJOH &EJUPS I REALLY missed the Subaru Legacy when my loan was over. And I was surprised, because, despite Subaru’s legendary rally background, the Legacy looked fairly bland at first sight. The thing is, once I drove the car, I found myself becoming slowly but surely addicted. By the end of my week with the Subaru I was obsessed, and I even started looking at the car and changing my mind about the mundane appearance. I be-

gan to see the car as quite handsome - its aggressive nose and low-set wide stance were particularly appealing attributes. Maybe all this change of mind over the looks was psychological? All I know is that having driven the car, ‘bland’ is a word that just can’t be used to describe the Legacy. When I’m in the market for an estate car again, the Legacy will be given serious consideration. Why? Well, it is simply

awesome to drive. It’s fun; it holds the road and accelerates with effortless ease. It’s also superbly comfortable to sit in and has bags of space in the sensibly square shaped load area. With two small children, I can vouch for the fact that the Legacy’s boot will swallow at least two prams, toys and shopping bags all in one go without any hassle. Even more importantly, I felt safe driving my family on greasy wet roads with lorry

spray incessantly hitting the windscreen, because I knew this car had a Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) system and had twice the gripping power of most estate cars out there. The car feels rugged – inside and out, but in that handsome way I described earlier. Ok, some of the interior plastics on the dash are obviously not padded, but everything feels tough and hard-wearing. The Legacy

is a real alternative to an SUV or a small 4x4 mud-plugger, but looks like a normal estate car. That appeals to me, as I’m sure it will many other people, because the image of being a ‘Chelsea Tractor’ owner isn’t always welcome. My only real gripe about the

2.5 petrol powered automatic Legacy Estate is how quickly it sucks up fuel. I did drive the car rather enthusiastically during my week, but three days into my loan, I found the fuel had plummeted into the reserve tank, while another estate I had on test (a Honda Accord 2.2 die-

sel) just refused to drink from its tank. I will really need to test drive the Legacy’s 2.0 litre oil-burning brother, to really be fair to it, because, mpg aside, everything else about this car is just so good. It’s certainly what you might describe as a ‘real driv-

er’s’ car. In other words, if you like driving, you’ll love being in control of this Subaru, whether it’s a trip to the shops, a rip up the motorway, or a long, winding cross-country journey. And you’ll be able to do it all with the family, and be as safe as houses.

The Bad Shepherds play punk era songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. She’s situated at the foot of the tower wall, well out of sight of those she still might potentially offend – quite unashamed by her state of undress after countless centuries working her saucy magic. The carved stone figure was only “discovered” in 1920 when the worn church doorstep was lifted for replacement, and the primitive carved figure came to light on the other side – reborn into the 20th century a little matter of 800 years since she last saw the light of day. The Goddess enjoys what’s known in the trade as “exaggerated sexual characteristics” – breasts, nipples, lips, big goo-goo eyes – and the fertility symbol still exerts a powerfully sexy aura to potential believers. She’s quite enough to make an upstanding family man blush – and to inspire a younger male pup to practise the less ancient local art of ‘Gokking’ her fulsome figure.
