The Synchronicity Factor 5IF MBUFTU PGGFSJOH GSPN 4UFQIFO 5 )BODPDL Stephen Hancock has written an astounding new thriller which blends mythology, history and the supernatural in a pageturning mystery that twists and turns as it races towards a violent climax and an awe-inspiring revelation. The Synchronicity Factor is resonant of iconic thriller writers such as Dean Kootz and Ian Fleming, and has been widely praised. “Disturbing and intriguing. The Synchronicity Factor is much more than a page-turning thriller, for its remarkable plot is rooted in real science and real history. Peter Lovesey, Cartier Diamond Dagger Lifetime Achievement award-winning crime fiction author.

Stephen Hancock has created something unique. Working within the conventions of the classic action thriller, The Synchronicity Factor evokes much of the feel and texture of the world of Ian Fleming and Eric Amber, but cleverly

interweaves this with a dark powerful supernatural strand that harks back to the best period of Dennis Wheatley. All of this combines to generate a narrative that is packed with reader guessing until the very end. The characters are intriguing and stronglydrawn, the settings vivid and memorable, the technology and the women glossy and seductive. “The Synchronicity Factor is a hugely enjoyable read, and I look forward to seeing more work from Stephen Hancock. Steve Cockayne, author of the Legends of the Land trilogy and The Good People. About the Author: Stephen Hancock spent many years in senior marketing positions

in industry prior to starting his own highly successful marketing and PR agency. Now active as awriter and professional jazz pianist, he runs a creative writing group in Leicestershire.

Arts Fresco now has such a high standing within the streettheatre community, the acts are queueing to be booked. That makes the job of programming team, all the harder. How do they whittle them down to the

very best? Luckily the team has a trick up its sleeve: a ruler. They’re not just checking whether street acts measure up to the demanding Arts Fresco standard, they’re measuring their height above see level. That’s right, any act on stilts or ladders or wearing seven league boots is more likely to earn a nod of approval. The team’s on a mission to give

It’s early days yet. next month we’ll let you know who or what you can expect to meet on the streets of Harborough this September. One thing’s for sure, you’ll see wild inventiveness, the like of which you’ve never seen before.

Disney On Ice celebrates 100 years of magic. "MM ZPVS %JTOFZ GBWPVSJUFT BU UIF /*" 3RD - 1 TH NOVEMBER A one-of-a-kind skating spectacular featuring more than 60 Disney stars is coming to The NIA, Birmingham for 20 performances from 3rd – 14th November. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Disney’s Mulan, The Lion King and Pinocchio, and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, will be taking to the ice while Stitch from Lilo & Stitch drops in to wreak his usual havoc during this grand celebration in Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic. Produced by Feld Entertainment, this fanfare production features more than 60 unforgettable Disney stars that span the decades, a sing-along score of award-winning Disney music, stunning choreography, elaborate sets and beautiful costumes. With Mickey and Minnie leading the fun, audiences enjoy breathtaking production numbers choreographed by Emmy Award®-winner Sarah Kawahara. Kawahara previously worked with Michelle Kwan and choreo-

graphed the skating segment for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Complementing Kawahara’s fabulous skate sequences are the memorable tunes compiled by music directors Art Kempel and Stan Beard that bring the wonderful memories of Disney to life on ice. Scenic Designer David Potts and Lighting Designer LeRoy Bennett create the mood and settings that showcase extraordinary Disney moments. Outfitting this cast of more than 60 characters was the challenge facing Costume Designer Scott Lane. His dazzling designs range from Mickey’s Marching Band, to the “it’s a small world” dolls, to the stars of Mulan and Finding Nemo. The bright colors and minimal structure in the Nemo costumes allow the characters to move freely in order to mimic the natural movement in water. Renowned designer Bob Mackie also lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie. Scenic Designer David Potts, who has worked on numerous

Broadway productions, creates a theatrical atmosphere on ice. Skaters weave around and enliven the “it’s a small world” sequence amidst sparkling floats that turn into a radiant light parade; a blanket of snow and an avalanche fall as Mulan battles the Huns; and a giant present is opened to reveal Buzz Lightyear as he’s first introduced to that favorite toy cowboy, Woody and his pal Jessie.

the expendables 5IJOHT BSFOoU RVJUF BT UIFZ TFFN Fri 20th AUGUSt THE EXPENDABLES is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they seem, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deception and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the team struggle with an even tougher challenge - one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers. Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Void of emotion, he is a fearless leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the edge. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal, modern-day warriors. The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons. When the mysterious Church offers Barney

a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex—CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage, finish the job he started and to perhaps save a soul: his own.

The Runaways oT 3PDL

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali—like

influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

The Festival of Quilts #BDL BHBJO BU UIF /&$ THUR 19TH - 22ND AUGUST The Festival of Quilts at The NEC, Birmingham is the largest and most eagerly anticipated event in the patchwork and quilting calendar anywhere in Europe. Last year over 30,000 people travelled to The NEC from over 50 countries around the globe demonstrating the sheer scale of The Festival of Quilts. Quilts are displayed in their thousands and come in many guises from both competition entrants and professional artists such as Kaffe Fassett, Susan Shie and Jane Dunnewold. Those who adore textiles, whilst

not pretending to have a specific love for quilts, have also come to recognise the sheer spectacle afforded by The Festival of Quilts. You certainly don’t need to be a maker to be transfixed by the beauty, colour and artistry, which surrounds you within this massive event. For some, the origins of the quilt as a bedcover are fully respected. For others, the essential disciplines are challenged, the rules are explored and boundaries broken. All aspects of quilting can be found within the Festival – nothing is ignored. The Festival is also about ‘doing’. Vast numbers of workshops

and lectures are presented to allow both the beginner and the expert to explore new territory. The shopping is immense and never has there been a greater variety of patchwork and quilting suppliers gathered together under one roof anywhere in Europe. The Festival of Quilts Returns To The NEC, Birmingham, Thur 19 – Sun 22 August. An inspirational figure to many of the Midlands artistic souls, this retrospective collection

The other, equal-favourite artist of jgallery curator Sue Brooks – yes, it’s a dream double bill! – is Amanda Hoskin, whose ‘Colours, Coast, & Sea’ collection of oil paintings truly brings home the wonders of Cornish cliffs, coastlines and seascapes. Not rocket science 3JDLZ (FSWBJT CMJOET VT XJUIe TPNF CMJOEJOH OFX NBUFSJBM TUE 10TH - WED 11TH AUGUST The Office, Extras, Hollywood success and the recent animated Ricky Gervais Show have made the pasty fat bloke a prime target for British critics, who feel he probably shouldn’t have time to pack a tour of last year’s Edinburgh Festival show into his busy superstar agenda. The argument runs that Ricky never served his apprenticeship on the comedy circuit; that he’s a writer, not a comedian. And, wouldn’t you just know it, complaints are flying because this latest one-man show – unlike the considerably tighter Politics, Animals and Fame – is really nothing much to do with Science. Perhaps unfortunately for the naysayers, since Science was premiered in 2009, Channel 4 has only gone and voted Gervais the third greatest stand-up comedian of all time, behind Richard Pryor and Billy Connolly. It’s true: a set resembling a mock-up of Frankenstein’s laboratory – a brain in a vat, various test tubes bubbling away – is little more than dressing. What Ricky does is wibble on about the stuff that’s on his mind – Amanda Holden, fellow fat people, receiving a goat intended for an

African family at Christmas – and it would be churlish to argue that there’s anyone out there who does it better. Fans of curricular comedy coherence, meanwhile,

should maybe give macroeconomics a chance.

ell Me On a Sunday tells the story of a woman in her midthirties who leaves London for New York seeking love and happiness. But as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties and frustrations, she begins to wonder whether – in fact – she has been looking for love in all the wrong places. This brand-new production is tailor made for Claire, who has a string of stage credits to her name, including Roxie Hart in Chicago and Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. “I’ve seen the show many times myself, and I can really relate to the character – I’m the right age for the role and can draw on my own experiences.” Claire’s appearance in Tell Me On a Sunday follows in the footsteps of stars such as Sarah Brightman, Elaine Paige, and Denise Van Outen. The show features the same chart-topping hits – Take that Look Off Your Face, Unexpected Song, and the title track, Tell Me On a Sunday. But this new production has been remodelled for Claire with an exclusive new song, I Still Believe in Love. “There’s a wonderful score with some big songs. This is a one-woman show and will be quite exposing, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge.” Claire is a seasoned performer – one of the UK’s best-loved personalities who shot to fame as Brookside’s Lindsey Corkhill back in 1991. After a brief spell with the soap Claire spent the next four years as an entertainer on the cruise ships. On her return, she reprised her role as Lindsey and remained as one of the leading characters until the soap’s demise in 2003. Since then, her career has gone from strength to strength, with regular TV appearances

on shows such as Loose Women and 60 Minute Makeover, as well as West End roles, concerts, and album releases. The curtain rises at Northampton’s Royal & Derngate on Monday August 30 before taking in more than 45 theatres across the country. But Claire is no stranger to the stage and the demands of a major national tour. “I’ve got a vocal session later on today and start rehearsals straight after. It’s a challenging role, and you need to look after yourself – not too many late nights. But it’s not difficult; you just need to get on with it.” Claire is starring in the lead role for the entire run, which closes at the Wycombe Swan Theatre at the end of November. But there’s no time to relax for Claire, who has one day off before

embarking on her next role. “I’m blessed to have been so busy. There haven’t been too many lean times. But I do find time to unwind and enjoy spending time with friends. You just have to take the opportunities when they come.” Let’s hope you take the opportunity to sit back, relax, and see Claire Sweeney shine in this fabulous new production of Tell Me On a Sunday. Tell Me On a Sunday takes to the Royal & Derngate stage from Monday 30 August to Saturday 4 September. Tickets are priced from £9.50-£25.50. Box Office 01604 624811 www.royalandderngate.co.uk

At first it can seem a slightly strange idea, taking the kids on a day-trip to visit the National Sea Life Centre… in Birmingham. However, as a resident of the great Midland Plain, it’ll only take you two seconds to cotton on to the sheer genius of the notion. It’s precisely the fact that we live so far from the country’s bucket-andspade / beach-and-rockpool / aquatic wildlife havens that makes the sea so very special to us Midlanders. So why not import a million litres of prime tropical undersea real estate on to the buzzing Birmingham canalside of Brindley Place? Since the National Sea Life Centre opened in 1996, we’ve made regular visits as the seasonal attractions have gradually been added, but this year’s hammerhead sharks – the UK’s first, and that includes the regular seaside! – are threatening to become the ‘giant pandas’ of the aquatic preservation scene. Now ably assisted in the kitchen by her younger brother Luu Ngoc Dang, Hao is understandably proud of her insider’s tip-off from the culinary gods of MIchelin, which declares her establishment to be an “Immaculately furnished, contemporary restaurant, passionately run and offering

tasty good value food. Noodle soups are a speciality.” The response to Michelin’s feedback has been phenomenal, with inquisitive customers keen to experiment in a cuisine that is beloved by fans of Chinese and Thai cooking. Indeed, we loved the cool pine interior of Dang’s – adorned with Luu Ngoc’s atmospheric Vietnamese townscapes – and the subtly spicy, exotic menu which the sibling team have assembled with a keen eye and taste for the finest and freshest produce. We kicked off with a recommended selection of starters which ran to Vietnamese spring rolls, fried spicy vegetable

dumplings, seafood fishcakes and chicken wings stuffed with minced pork (£6.50 per head) and were immediately sold on the flavour and subtlety of Dang’s Vietnamese cuisine – not to mention the excellent value. Don’t make the mistake of thinking Dang’s spectacular soups are anything other than a meal in themselves: try bun thang (£7.95) with Vietnamese ham, prawns, chicken and egg, and chilli sauce and fried shallots to taste. Or go for the unique flavours of muc-noi-sao-cai-sang – squid stuffed with chopped king prawns and minced pork, served with pak-choi in oyster sauce (£8.95).

Now we have to wait until October to discover whether chef Hao can add a Northamptonshire Food & Drink Award to her plaudits.

has a top speed of 155mph performance, but is has all the innovations of the second-generation Mazda3 on which it is based. With a 0- 62mph in just 6.1sec, the car loves to be driven hard – and I mean hard. You see, for a small family hatch, it’s fitted with one hell of a lump - the

immensely powerful MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine. It generates a whopping 260ps and 380Nm of torque, which means if you are heavy footed, watch out, the steering wheel can almost wrench itself from your grasp. The front wheels can also go a bit loopy if you are too wild with the accelerator. Drive the car

within your limits though and you get a seriously fun, and at times, sensible ride. The Mazda3 MPS has a mega-sporty suspension set up, but it doesn’t affect ride comfort. New-style alloy wheels are fitted with wider, lower profile tyres and the power steering is tuned to

Inside, the MPS is generously equipped with features including: part-leather front sports bucket seats, Bluetooth® technology, Welcome Mode lighting, a surround-sound BOSE® premium audio system and even a compact satellite navigation system developed especially for this model. What is great about the MPS is that it will appeal to anyone who loves to drive a car with a sporty edge but needs five seats and a decent load area. I have two small children who fitted comfortably into their child seats in the back on our way to a four year old’s birthday party. The buggy and all the bags you take for a three year old and a baby also went into the decent sized boot, without any hassle. What’s more, we still had

room for all four of us plus lots of party bags, toys and balloons on the way home! My wife and I also took the car on a couple of shopping trips. What made the trip more interesting than usual were the people who stood and stared at the car as we loaded the food and nappies into the boot. Obviously the car has admirers – either that or fellow petrol-heads are trying to work out what it is! This car is a motor I’d recommend. The only downside is the fuel economy. That can be remedied, to a degree, if you don’t drive it hard all the time. But it will be difficult – the MPS ‘pedal to the metal’ action is addictive, and that’s why one day, you might just buy one when you’ve had enough of your ‘normal’ family hatch, whatever that may be.

Are you Anti-Freeze Aware? :PVS BOUJ GSFF[F DPVME CF EBNBHJOH ZPV ZPVS DBS BOE UIF QMBOFU You might not know it, but almost 100% of the anti-freeze used in modern motor vehicles contains ethylene glycol. Unfortunately for you and your car, your pets and the environment, ethylene glycol just happens to be highly toxic. As little as 30ml of the chemical can be fatal in adults. Classed as hazardous waste by the Environment Agency, ethylene glycol is lethal even in trace amounts to dogs who walk through a contaminated puddle and then lick their paws. What’s more, some formulations of ethylene glycol can even damage the vehicles they’re designed to protect,

ruining paintwork, harming the main bearings, and potentially causing engine failure. The good news is that there’s now a far safer alternative in the

F BH

F Q

TF

form of propylene glycol, which prevents freezing and acts as a coolant and corrosion inhibitor in just the same way as ethylene glycol. It’s just one carbon atom different on a molecular level, with none of the deadly side effects. PG has been the safe alternative for vehicle antifreeze coolant in the USA and France for many years - and there’s a powerful UK lobby for ethylene glycol to be banned in anti-freeze and replaced by propylene glycol. But now it’s possible to get ahead of the game with a PG-based antifreeze coolant

available in the UK: AAA Classic Coolant, which is distributed by AAA Solutions Limited. Transferring heat more effectively, it’s not harmful to the engine’s main bearings - and as PG is widely used in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, it’s safe for you and your pets. Unlike conventional anti-freeze, it can even be safely disposed of down the drain without harming marine life or wild animals. It’s time to change to the safe, smart alternative to your current, toxic anti-freeze. For more details, go to www. aaaclassic.com.

A breath of fresh air 1VSJGZJOH ZPVS BJS DPO SFEVDFT IFBMUI SJTLT Did you know that pollution inside a car with a poorly maintained air conditioning system can be five times higher than levels outside? If you own one of the estimated 16 million cars on the road with air conditioning or climate control, you could be putting at risk the health of you and your family this summer if you don’t purify your air-con system. One simple, effective way to alleviate the problem is to use an Air Con Refresher, designed by Astra Automotive to quickly eliminate unpleasant odours emitted from air-con systems, as well as killing any bacteria, mould and fungi on the evaporator. Children, the elderly and asthmatic sufferers are the most vulnerable to the health risks arising from pollutants

and micro-organisms entering the cabin via air con can cause health risks “Scientists believe the problem is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the deepest recess of a vehicle’s air conditioning system, says Astra Automotive MD Leon Callahan. “It is sometimes quoted as ‘sick car syndrome’ – a mobile version of the sick

building syndrome blamed for illness in offices.“ AA studies have identified micro-organisms on insulation material and evaporators inside the air conditioning unit as the prime suspect. Moisture provides a breeding ground for smelly bugs and the airborne particles they produce - known causes of headaches, nausea and allergic reactions.

To avoid these health risks, it’s recommended to use the Air Con Refresher once a year - or when you buy a used car. The air-con decontamination process could hardly be simpler: you simply depress the nozzle level on the 250ml can whilst the air-con system is running, with the car empty, and all doors and windows closed. The Air Con Refresher is available direct from Astra Automotive or from selected specialist automotive stockists, priced at just ÂŁ6.38. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR SST FQ-330 #Z 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ THE MITSUBISHI Evo is a legendary beast and attracts looks and shouts of admiration from petrolheads wherever you go. That comes as no surprise because the Evolution X is about as understated as a pig in a wig. It is low, wide and oozes aggression. The black muzzle with yawning radiator grill shouts ‘power’ and the massive tailpipes and vents on the bonnet more than hint at the levels of pure performance lurking beneath. The Evolution FQ-330 SST produces a whopping 324 bhp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine mated to a four wheel drive system. The engine’s power is distributed to the wheels that can use the clout the most and the brakes are sensational. All this gives you a sense of unbelievable reassurance when pushing the car to its limits.

_a^ R^] POSITIVE • Power • Image • Unbelievable grip • Fun NEGATIVE • Interior plastics • Poor fuel consumption

42

WOW August 2010

The FQ-330 drives just like all its other Evo X kith and kin, which is to say it’s eye-wateringly fast. Ok, the interior plastics are a bit cheap looking, but the Recaro bucket seats are just brilliant. It really is an addictive car to be in and the performance never gets boring, though you’ll soon realise there is a cost to the addiction – and that’s the fuel economy. Let’s just say it is best to know where the petrol stations are in advance if you’re planning a fun long burn off the beaten track. What’s new though is the SST (Sports Shift Transmission) dual-clutch transmission, which makes accessing the FQ-330’s velocity even easier.

Push the pedal to the metal and flick through the gear paddles on the steering wheel (or leave it in pure auto mode), and it’ll accelerate to 62mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. It could go faster but Mitsubishi have stuck an electronic speed limiter on the car. While I usually prefer manual transmissions in sports cars, the SST system really suits the Evo’s insane character, moving through the gears as easily and quickly as the greedy engine will allow. Possibly the most refined engine output and transmission combination in the Evo X range, the FQ-330 SST has been worth the wait. Sparkling

performance matched with fingertip control could mean it’s the most rounded Evo X you can buy. But I won’t know for sure until I road test the 360 and the mighty new 400. Watch this space! VW Scirocco R #Z 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ THE VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO that I had on test stood out a mile. In a bright, almost neoncum-metallic green, the colour actually suited this particular potent model. The ‘R’ – the most potent variant of the Scirocco range - is the sort of car that talks to you. It says: “Look at me, look at me, I’m a powerful car and you can have fun driving me and look cool. And do you know what? The Scirocco is right. During my short test of the VW on a beautiful sunny day in rural Leicestershire, my photog-

rapher and I took the bright green beast for its exercise around the narrow, dusty, cornfield-fringed country roads. The first impression I had was of the tremendous ‘woomph’ you feel when you push down hard on the accelerator. But you never feel scared. Or at least I didn’t. The car always felt planted to the road. Its grip was sensational and the brakes awesomely quick in scrubbing off speed. The only slight downside to the Scirocco is the interior. Don’t get me wrong, the seats are comfy and they look every bit as sporty as the rest of the car, it’s just that the dash plastics look a little cheap to me. But perhaps that’s just me being picky. After parking up to take some pictures of the Scirocco R, my snapper and I couldn’t help admiring the chunky alloys and mean stance of the car. We probably sounded like anoraks, but we started harking back to the days of our youth when we lusted

after the 1980s Scirocco. To be honest, there is still a glimpse of the old model there if you squint, but the ‘retro’ vibe still doesn’t detract from the sharp edged, seriously sexy look of today’s shape. Being a dad-of-two, I also had a quick, rather sensible glimpse in the boot. It’s always important to me, even when testing sporty cars, to see if I can fit my children’s stuff, my wife’s things and my own gear into a car. Quite honestly I think the Scirocco would just about sort me out in that department – at a squeeze. Even with two doors, there’s enough room to lean in to the rear bench to hook up the child seats to the Isofix. I could be sold on the car. If a family man can say that he’d buy the VW Scirocco then you can see why a young couple or a single professional might lap this car up. I can just see a couple of mountain bikes or a surf board strapped to the Scirocco’s roof – it’s that

sort of vision I have when really thinking about who would drive this lovely, powerful machine. The only downside of my day with the stunning Scirocco R was that it was too short. But in the time I had with the VW, I had enough adrenaline pumping through my veins to know that this car will thrill anyone who buys it. The thrills won’t come cheap at nearly £29,000, but if Volkswagen reliability and build quality is anything to go by, you’ll not be sorry you spent the cash. easy to find on any map, where it shows up unusually as a vast circle of woodland encompassing an inner sanctum of farmland known as Salcey Lawn. There’s more to this ancient forest than rare flowers,

birdsong and picnics: every one of Northamptonshire’s Country Parks seems to boast excellent café facilities and playgrounds for the kids… and it isn’t every former medieval hunting forest that offers a bird’s-eye view of its canopy from a spectacular, winding treetop walk, 20 metres high at the uppermost lookout and 300 metres long. Whether you want to stick to the clearly marked walkways through the forest or beat a retreat off-track, there’s a genuine sensation of time slowing down in this great oasis of green – maybe even winding backward into more leisurely times when royal deer were fair game for the Tudors, or when elephants were employed to shift timber during WW2, in what remains a commercially exploited forest. The Elephant Pond where the workers claimed their evening bath can still be enjoyed en route to the treetops, though nowadays there’s a bridge provided for your convenience! Allow time to walk right around the ring of forest, taking in the array of ancient oaks including the 1,600-yearold remains of the Salcey Oak, once England’s greatest with a circumference of 15 metres. Or cut right to the chase, and head up the long, slowly sloping (and so wheelchair friendly) wooden walkway into the canopy. The Treetop Walk was a Green award winner when it was built in 2005, and even at the fourth return those final steps into the lookout tower are still a source of quietly miraculous sensations of being above it all.
