My kinda Town – " GBTDJOBUJOH HVJEFE XBML SAT 26 - SUN 27 JUNE Hometown season, storyteller Jo Blake will be leading guided walks – called Town, My Town – on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 June, and again the following weekend, revealing some hidden corners of Northampton. Northampton. You know this place. You know the shortcuts and the crossing-places, the department stores, fast food outlets, pubs, park benches, the cracks in the pavement. You know your town like the creases on your own hand. But beyond the surface of the familiar and worn-out pathways that we all carve into the places we know, there are the forgotten fragments; the

half-remembered tales and histories of characters and events that are the fabric of the town. Town, My Town is a guided walk that encourages the audience to see Northampton as they’ve never seen it before: to be a tourist in your own town. As you walk with Jo Blake, your guide and storyteller, into the belly of the town, you’ll find an in-between place where history bleeds into fiction, biography becomes poetry and performance and reality merge; where button-makers, brawling bears, and bare-knuckled boxers leap out of the pages of the town; where witches spit hellfire and planes tumble from the skies onto the streets of the

story. This fascinating performance involves visiting cellars, rooftops and pubs. Places are limited on each walk, so early booking is recommended. The walk sets off from Royal & Derngate (?) at 11am and 3pm

on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 June, and Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July Tickets are ÂŁ7.50 in advance or ÂŁ8.50 on the day. Call the Box Office on 01604 624811 to book or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

5IF $PNFEZ PG &SSPST MON 26TH - SAT 31ST JULY A merchant of Syracuse has identical twin sons. One is stolen at the age of seven. The other’s name is changed to that of the lost boy, in his memory. When grown up, he wanders the Mediterranean in search of his brother, finally chancing upon the seaport where the latter lives. The wanderer encounters the mistress, the wife and other acquaintances

of the brother and is inevitably mistaken for him. When he denies all knowledge of the people who greet him, they assume he is mad and attempt to have him locked up – save that by a further confusion they apprehend the other twin, the one that does know them. The audience await the moment of resolution that will come when the twins appear on stage together.

5IF 8JOE JO UIF 8JMMPXT Mole has a sudden case of spring fever, gives up on his house-cleaning, and wanders in the fields and meadows. He finds himself by a river (he has been such a stay-at-home that he has never seen it before) and meets the Water Rat, who invites Mole into his boat, something else he has never seen before. “Believe me, my young friend,” Rat says dreamily, “there is nothing absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” A world of friendships, the joy of carefree wandering, of picnicking, and playing has opened for Mole. In time, the Mole, the Water Rat and the Badger go to Toad Hall to try to

help their friend Mr. Toad who has a bad habit of reckless driving. Toad has numerous adventures, ending up in Court and then in prison. His irresponsible living and extravagance lead to the loss of his home to the barbaric stoats and weasels. The four friends go to battle to regain Toad Hall. All ends with a banquet where all the friends rejoice at Toad’s return.

Both shows will be performed in the open air within the Abington Park Museum Courtyard, Northampton. Tickets for both will be available on the night from 7pm. £10 full, £8 concessions, £6 child.

Between Thursday 8 and Saturday 17 July audiences will be able to see performances of the classic Thornton Wilder play Our Town, the Sondheim musical Anyone Can Whistle and devised new work under the title of New Town, all presented on the Royal stage. Following the daily routine and necessities of one small town in the early 1900’s, Our Town explores the simple, ordinary events that make up the patterns of life. Poignant, heart-

warming and intensely moving, this is an American classic that is universal to small towns everywhere. This touching play by Thornton Wilder can be seen on Saturday 10 and Friday 16 July at 7.30pm and Saturday 17 July at 2.30pm. Anyone Can Whistle is filled with some of Stephen Sondheim’s most beautiful music, including the songs There Won’t Be Trumpets, With So Little To Be Sure Of and, of course, the title song. This wacky, unconventional musical looks at the importance of individuality in a conformist society that overflows with youthful energy and fun, and it takes to the Royal stage on

Wednesday 14 and Saturday 17 July at 7.30pm. The third production from Royal & Derngate’s Youth Theatre is New Town, an exciting new work devised and written by young people from Northampton, reflecting on just what it means to live in a new town. With everything from horror pastiches to high energy group sketches including a piece about Northampton superheroes – this promises to be a unique, insightful and crazy night of entertainment.

New Town performances are on Thursday 8 and Thursday 15 July at 7.30pm.

Drummer/ bandleader Pete Cater is singlehandedly on a mission to keep big band music real, and is doing so by re-creating some of the genre’s most iconic and coolest music in live concerts throughout the UK. Undoubtedly one of the UK’s greatest jazz drummers, Pete Cater is experiencing huge interest in his latest project to recreate the work of drum legend Buddy Rich, together with his 15-piece big band. The concert will contain

" OJHIU PG TXJOH NVTJD FRIDAY 9 JULY King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys are more than just the world’s greatest swing band, they are an institution! The band have been on the road for two decades playing every European country as well as the USA and Russia and recording ten CDs. Dazzling musicianship, riveting stage performances, more than 50 TV appearances (including, somewhat bizarrely, five episodes of Teletubbies) and 75 radio broadcasts have established them as the Kings of Swing. They have been the recipients of praise from throughout the music industry. Paul Jones

on BBC Radio 2 called them “the hardest act to follow since the parting of The Red Sea”.

Up the blues 3PCFSU $SBZ SPDLT -FJDFTUFS SATURDAY 3 JULY You can’t strictly call Robert Cray a Blues revolutionary because no-one else has taken up his particular soulful, clear and percussive style. There’s no other guitarist out there who can match the expressive sound and sustain that’s led the bluesman to lock strings in the past 30 years with the likes of Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, B. B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry and Bonnie Raitt. On the back of five Grammys and 11 more nominations, virtuoso Cray and band hit Leicester high on the vibe of a string of great recent albums, marked

by a creative renewal and a key reunion with an old performing partner, bassist Richard Cousins. Sat 3 ROBERT CRAY De Montfort Hall Leicester

Northampton’s beauty viewed anew 4BN 8BETXPSUI DPMMFDUJPO BU %FSOHBUF Sat 24 July The big summer show at the wonderful Rennie-Mackintoshdesigned 78 Derngate House and Galleries focuses on Northampton itself, offering a series of fresh and surprising visions of the town from exciting young painter Sam Wadsworth. The new collection of works features Northampton people and places, the often-overlooked beauty of its buildings and parks, as seen through the eyes of the award-winning artist. In a celebration of Sam’s new hometown, he covers subjects as diverse as the infamous landmark Lift Tower, All Saints Church and Northampton’s own Dr Who, Matt Smith. Viewed together, these

paintings and prints form a cohesive collection which perfectly captures Northampton as it is now. “My paintings are concerned with light and colour and the simplification of form,” says Sam. “My motivation behind this collection of work was to highlight the beauty that the town and surrounding countryside has to offer us.” Sat 24 July-October SAM WADSWORTH: A VIEW PORTRAITS OF NORTHAMPTON 78 Derngate: The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House & Galleries Northampton NNI IUH Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm www.78derngate.org.uk Tel: 01604 603 407

A stitch in time n7JDUPSJBOTo UIF MJWFT PG B UZQJDBM TIPF GBDUPSZ GBNJMZ UNTIL SEPTEMBER A new exhibition at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery looks at life in the Victorian town through the eyes of a typical family, the Bullocks of Victoria Road. During the 19th century, the town’s population increased from 7,000 to 80,000, which saw the creation of thousands of familiar terraced homes for the huge shoe-factory workforce. Despite avoiding the worst slum

conditions, times were hard. Shoe-closer James Bullock worked from home, collecting shoe pieces from local factories and stitching them to sell on. He was married to Eliza and together they had 11 children, one of whom died in infancy. With actual objects, photographs and documents from the family, this exhibition gives a lasting impression of the overcrowding and hardship, the eternal problems of

finding food and clothing for the family in Victorian Northampton.

Grate the vegetables using the grater attachment on a food processor or by hand using a boxgrater (you may opt to finely chop the onion). Adult supervision is required at this stage. 3. Coinciding with the opening of the popular free Northampton Music Festival in mid-June, the Square was transformed with the big switch-on of a cool £458,000 state-of-the-art colour change LED lightshow. And the lights are here to stay, working as an enticing backdrop for a further spate of outdoor events and entertainment. There’s an immediately impressive, feelgood vibe about the council’s hi-tech art and regeneration project, which sees projected lights cover all four corners of the

Displays include former historic resident Francis ‘DNA’ Crick ballet dancing across the façade of the Peacock Place shopping centre, while George Bernard Shaw lindy-hops across the skyline – though the computerised lightshows promise a different look or special theme for every night of the year.

This is a project for both enthusiastic beginners and seasoned performers as the week promises mind-blowing, musical fun for people of all ability levels. Following this, from Monday 2 to Friday 6 August a group of 14 to 18 year olds will have the chance to work with one of the UK’s top dance companies. On Rambert Dance Company’s Dance & Music Summer School they will develop their skills as a musician or a dancer, creating their own choreography or composition by joining either the dance or

the music course. Both programmes are led by a specialist Rambert animateur and will draw on Rambert’s own current repertoire, ending in a joint performance on the Royal’s stage on Friday 6 August. Also from Monday 26 to Friday 30 July, pioneers of thrilling, energetic and uncompromising theatre, Frantic Assembly, are giving twenty four young people the opportunity to create a unique performance that will be performed to a live audience on the Royal Stage. True, my Audi is a solid tank of a car finely crafted in Deutschland – just like the Mercedes-Benz C 180 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY ESTATE SPORT on test here. The difference is my car is a 2.0 litre, 130bhp petrol model on a 53 plate. It was all my wife and I could stretch to after deciding we wanted a premium brand car with the safety and practicality to fit two small

I would have bought it, but at this stage in my life a week behind the wheel was the nearest ownership experience I was going to get. When I first had the Mercedes-Benz C 180 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY ESTATE SPORT de-

I have a confession to make – I’m an Audi A4 Avant owner, so that might have clouded my judgement when test driving this very similar sized Mercedes-Benz. It might have made me less objective than I normally am when testing cars – mainly because this model of Mercedes is everything I wanted but couldn’t afford when shopping around for a decent German

For a large vehicle the C180 is deceptively agile in town and with outstanding all-round visibility and the added assistance of some parking sensors, it is a piece of cake to park. Out on the open road the 1.8-litre engine delivers power rapidly for a family estate and the car cruises smoothly through the five-speed automatic transmission. This Mercedes isn’t just about performance though, it is also

packed full with toys. There is a stereo system complete with eight speakers and iPod and MP3 compatibility. Then there’s the lockable glove box with cooling function, Bluetooth facility for hands free calls, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and the neat chrome ringed dials. The list just goes on. All controls are ideally situated for ease of use although, at first, it is easy to operate the cruise control lever by mistake rather than the indicator stick. Just like my Audi, the rear bench is more than adequate for fitting two child seats in se-

curely. I was particularly impressed by the load space. Luggage capacity expands from a thoroughly practical 485 litres behind the seats – 690 litres to the roof – to a cavernous 1500 litres (loaded to roof level) with the rear seats folded down. For those with a golfing bent, that means the C-Class Estate can swallow four golf bags and four trolleys. For everybody else, it is perhaps best to imagine two and a half washing machines! Safety features are all-embracing with anti-lock brakes, plenty of airbags and a tyre

pressure warning system. The environmental side of things are just as comprehensive; the BlueEFFICIENCY model uses weight saving measures, energy management and enhanced aerodynamics to improve fuel economy and to reduce CO2 emissions. When you take into consideration the excellent fuel figures (combined mpg 38.2), as well as the performance, practicality and prestige of the Mercedes-Benz C 180 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY ESTATE SPORT, it really is a fantastic car all round.

A work of art! 5JN #BSOFT $MBZ UFTU ESJWFT UIF "TUPO .BSUJO 7 7BOUBHF 3PBETUFS

Every little lad goes through a stage of excitedly playing with cars and some men, like me, simply don’t grow out of it. The difference is we’re not talking toy cars anymore. So, you can imagine my response when Aston Martin Lagonda agreed to let me test drive their V8 Vantage Roadster. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. I was off to Warwickshire as soon as my Aston Martin contact could get back from L.A. He called me from the States apologising profusely for not being able to get back to the UK sooner - something to do with aeroplanes and volcanic ash! After the ash had cleared I was given a tour around the Gaydon based Aston Martin Lagonda factory and witnessed Aston Martin’s being made by local people rather than robots. It was wonderful to see cars actually being produced like works of art rather than mass produced by robots. By the time the visit to the plant finished I was more than itching

42

WOW July 2010

to get behind the wheel of my V8 Vantage demonstrator. The Roadster is a compact sports car with two distinct personalities - open and energizing, or closed and protective. I’d go as far to say it is one of the world’s most beautiful cars: elegant, yet aggressive with a low, purposeful stance and instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin. Once inside the Vantage Roadster you soon realise that the car’s interior is just as dramatic as its stunningly fashioned exterior. The instrument pack is crafted from aluminium with a three-dimensional profile for easy reading. The central message displays even use organic electroluminescence (OEL) – a process pioneered by Aston Martin – making them easier to read than conventional LCD’s. Sitting behind the three-spoke steering wheel and feeling the quality of the

hand-stitched leather trim has an almost intoxicating effect. Starting the beautiful beast up involves a touch of theatre. The ignition is controlled by a stainless steel and glass ECU (Emotion Control Unit). The ECU is inserted into a special docking station set within the traditional clear glass starter button. Pressing the ECU fully into the starter button fires the engine. Oh, the sound! You don’t need a stereo - the deep, rasping, buttery burble of the 420 bhp 4.7-litre V8 lump means you could happily listen to just that all day. Add the engine to the smallest model in the range and you get blistering all-round performance. The V8 Vantage can reach 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and goes on to an eye-wateringly fast 180 mph. There is no denying that the V8 Vantage is

a true high-performance sports car. The engine is willing and the handling is predictable and the good visibility means that the car is easy to use in town or on twisty country roads. And, of course, if you’re interested in track days, this car will handle a race circuit. In fact the Vantage will beg you to take it on a track. It would be cruel not to satisfy its needs. Yes, the Midlands based company has done a mindblowing job on this car. It’s thrilling to drive, it draws looks of admiration wherever it goes and it is an extraordinarily competent all-rounder. All in all Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd fulfilled my boyhood dreams by letting me drive this tour de force. It’s something I won’t forget and nor will anyone else who gets behind the wheel of the remarkable V8 Vantage.

he attractive oddities of St Andrew’s church in Stoke Dry are entirely disproportionate to the size of the church and the tiny Rutland village. Midway between Rockingham, Hallaton and Uppingham, the hillside village of no more than a dozen dwellings overlooks picturesque Eyebrook Reservoir, which now attracts fly-tiers and birdwatchers from all over the Midlands – though during the war it had an even more important role as the testing ground of Barnes Wallace’s ‘bouncing bomb’, made famous by the audacious ‘Dambusters’ raids of 1943 which spawned the British film classic. St. Andrew’s Church dates back to the tenth century, clinging high on the slope above the only road through the village. Once inside the snug church, the most striking feature amid the

48

bright whitewashed walls is the chancel columns which feature some amazing cartoonish Norman art, including a group of yobs yanking an angel down from heaven! Stranger still in the Digby family side chapel – once hidden from view for the purpose of secret masses – is a wall painting dating back as far as 1280, featuring bowand-arrow-happy heathens in the ‘Martyrdom of St Edmund’, who was an Anglian king. To an untrained eye, the heathens resemble Native Americans, even though the work predates the supposed ‘discovery’ of America by 200 years. Debate rages on as to the intended identity of the saint’s attackers, with old newspaper articles on the mystery helpfully supplied to help us make our minds up. As an alternative to the ‘Red Indian’ theory, it’s possible the figures were meant to represent horn-helmeted Vikings – the Norsemen also arising as likely early visitors to the new continent. The proof is here, if you choose to believe it. While the side-chapel boasts one headless Digby monument, the beautiful tomb of Kenelm and Anne Digby and his wife records their deaths at the turn of the 17th century, the couple represented in alabaster along with their nine children. This family of local landowners is

perhaps best known for their son Everard’s involvement in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament, for which he was hung, drawn and quartered. Perhaps needless to say, there’s a local tradition that suggests the small priest’s room above the church entrance porch was used as a meeting place to hatch the plot. What’s more, up until a few years ago, a notice at the bottom of the steep stone staircase up to the parvis asked parishioners not to spread the equally colourful legend that the claustrophobic little room was once used by a vicar to starve to death a local witch!
