Publisher’s Message

I

have always loved the Spring and Summer issue... There’s an abundance of colour and it feels fresh and exciting. This one is extra special for a couple of reasons.

It’s my last issue as owner and publisher of ReFined Yorkton. I am excited to introduce you to the new owner, Todd Kulcsar. You can read Todd’s bio in the magazine and I am sure many of you will recognize him from connecting with him in some way in the community. I know Todd has some great ideas and he brings a fresh new energy and new eyes to the magazine. I am excited to see the next issues as they hit the streets! You can also watch for the new branding of Refined Yorkton’s logo. I have included it here so you know what to look for. Please join me in welcoming Todd and wishing him all the best on his new adventure. Now for the second reason I am excited about this issue of ReFined. The cover story is called Gratitude, Grace and Grit and I love the heart and soul behind these words. It is my pleasure to showcase four female business owners who embody the essence of Gratitude, Grace and Grit, and I invite you to read their stories and celebrate with them. I hope you enjoy the stories and recipes, and the Spring and Summer vibe of this issue. I hope you will read it cover to cover and let people know you saw them in ReFined Yorkton Magazine. Thank you all for being loyal readers, and for supporting and encouraging us over the past five years. Yes, this year is our anniversary year and I am so proud of the story we have created, the relationships we have developed and the friendships we have formed.

With an artistic background in photography and graphic design, plus sales experience, Todd felt becoming the owner of a locally owned community magazine was a perfect fit for him and his family. It has always been Todd’s dream to own a business of his own so when the opportunity to own ReFined Yorkton became available, he jumped on it. Over the years, Todd has built many relationships in Yorkton, with both residents and business owners. His resume is a long one. As a student attending Yorkton Regional High School, he worked two part time jobs — pumping gas at the old Shell Gas station on Broadway (currently Rocen Auto Sport) and delivering flowers for Norm and Pearl McKeeman at Yorkton Florists Ltd. After graduating, he found full time employment working for Gordon Obuck

The Kulcsar family loves spending time outdoors in beautiful Yorkton and area. From camping and hitting the trails with their ATVs and dirt bikes in summer, to spending as much time as they can on the snowmobiles in winter, you’re sure to see Todd, Michelle and Owen out and about in the community.

oralee Schoenrock is an audiologist with more than 20 years of experience helping people of all ages and lifestyles regain hearing using hearing aids appropriate for their needs and budgets. Coralee opened the doors of Premier Care Hearing two years ago. Being an entrepreneur was not something she ever imagined – she’d spent 18 years working in public health – but now that she runs a local business she can’t imagine doing anything else. “Being an audiologist is rewarding because it’s all about changing people’s

lives,” she remarks. “I’m taking them from not being able to hear their grandkids to being able to hear them. Or from squabbling over the TV volume to being able to hearing the TV. It’s about empowering people to be able to keep up with their affairs with ease rather than being afraid of missing out or not hearing something.” Coralee shares a shocking statistic: once a person has experienced hearing loss it takes on average seven years for them to seek help. Losing the ability to hear leaves many people feeling vulnerable, scared or hopeless. Coralee is determined to improve the quality of life

As a professional audiologist she not only sells and repairs hearing aids, but also diagnoses hearing loss and counsels people through their journey. “There is no cookie-cutter approach,” she says. “I do whatever I can to help my clients and to accommodate their unique circumstances.” The personalized service and level of comfort provided at Premier Care Hearing are what clients appreciate. For example, last spring when her clinic was closed due to COVID-19 public health orders, Coralee provided curbside repair for her clients whenever they reached out for help. Coralee says having a

successful background in public health has given her a unique atmosphere in her clinic. Couple that with the fact that she is knowledgeable in all major brands of hearing aids means no matter your concerns with price or functionality, she can find a solution best suited for you. “Hearing aids have come a long way,” she says. “When I first started out, I used a screwdriver to set treble and bass! Ashlie Hill

Love Your Skin From the Inside Out By Erin Legg Photos by Uniquely Kayla Photography

BEST YOU

It’s been just over a year since Ashlie Hill introduced Yorkton to a couple of revolutionary medical aesthetic treatments.

V

enus Freeze is a noninvasive, pain-free treatment used to tighten and rejuvenate your skin’s appearance. It’s also effective for reducing wrinkles, cellulite and stretch marks. This is achieved using pulsed magnetic fields and radiofrequency to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin. “These treatments are suitable for someone who has lost a lot of weight or had kids and now have loose skin, or anyone who has stretch marks or agerelated wear and tear. I can tighten the skin,” explains Ashlie. The Venus Freeze treatments can be done on the body, neck or face. There is no pain or stress to the body – in fact, many of Ashlie’s clients find the treatments so relaxing they fall asleep on the comfortable medical aesthetics treatment table! The treatment sessions themselves are not long – between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area of focus. Achieving the client’s optimal results varies from person to person. “It really depends on your body’s elasticity and collagen,” Ashlie notes. “But it works.” And indeed it does! Ashlie has used the Venus Freeze treatments on herself and is more than pleased with the results. She also tracks her clients’ progress using a series of before and after photos. Some clients have been able to reduce excess skin by several inches through regular treatments. Once their goals are reached, Ashlie suggests scheduling maintenance treatments once you feel it’s time. Ashlie also offers a Venus Glow facial rejuvenation treatment, which is a hydrofacial, skin cleansing service giving a deep clean to your pores, leaving you looking healthy, vibrant and fresh. “The Glow is safe and enjoyable for everyone of all ages,” Ashlie notes.

One of the best parts of the Venus Freeze and Venus Glow treatments is that there is no down time. It is easy to schedule into your normal self-care routine. The Venus Freeze and Venus Glow treatments are unique to Ashlie’s salon, Top Image Studio. Her goal is to empower her clients with confidence in their natural beauty. “I’m at that stage in my career where I really wanted to expand my skills and services for my clients,” she explains. Aside from being a certified medical aesthetician, Ashlie is a journeyman hairstylist with 17 years of experience. “I am a creative person. I love colour!” she laughs. Top Image Studio is a busy centre that hosts hair services with Ashlie and Kathy McTavish (Styles by Kathy), laser therapy with Megan Anderson (Bioflex by Megan) and now Ashlie’s medical aesthetics treatments. Ashlie hopes to expand the hair services by bringing an additional hairstylist on board, and eagerly awaits the opportunity to educate more people about the Venus treatments. “We all deserve to feel beautiful and look our best!” she says.

Stories of Business Success ‘Woven together, these three qualities help define a competent leader’

B

eing in business can be tough. Your business is often at the mercy of economic and other community, provincial or world events that are out of your control — but deciding who you are as a business owner is always up to you. We talked to four business owners who live and run their business with a healthy dose of “gratitude, grace and grit.” In our interviews, we talked about their successes and challenges, and what they love about what they do and the services they provide. Together, “gratitude, grace and grit” are the core of a mindset of leadership and the adaptation of all three are the mark of a successful business person.

18

R eFined YORKTON & AREA

Gratitude Gratitude is a conscious decision that allows us to focus on the positive and to “find the good.” It’s a way of being and living that collaborates, celebrates, cheers and supports others on their path, while staying true to your own journey. Gratitude can be what grounds us and keeps us moving forward in a positive headspace, rather than allowing us to be a victim of circumstance. While many people tend to view and express gratitude in relation to our personal lives, gratitude in the business arena is especially critical because it satisfies the core psychological need to feel a sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves.

COVER FEATURE

Gratitude can be the most effective antidote for discouragement, bitterness and cynicism. When one chooses to be thankful and grateful, the negative slowly washes away. When we express gratitude, we become more vulnerable and authentic. The connection with the other person strengthens, by promoting trust and mutual respect. Grateful people tend to focus more on the things they appreciate at work, at home, in their community and their world, rather than focusing on the things or people that annoy them. A gratitude mindset has a ripple effect that leads to positive relationships and personal and business success.

“Gratitude is a conscious

decision that allows us to focus on the positive and to ‘find the good.’”

“Grace is the ability to

see things from another person’s perspective and to look at events and circumstances through another person’s eyes. Grace is an outstretched hand to help others and an offer of support and encouragement.”

“Grit is the strength

Grace

Grit

Grace is a way of being that draws people to you as you support and encourage others. Grace is the extension of kindness to self, family, business associates and community, no matter what differences and challenges exist.

Grit is the strength of character that helps you persevere through setbacks and struggles, in both personal life and business. It is about the decisions we make every day — in moments when we choose to stay engaged, despite the frustration and struggles. It truly is the refusal to be crushed by adversity and the choice to grow, change and develop, in spite of the struggles.

As a noun, grace means “to live with kindness, to portray calmness and elegance, or to be courteousness.” It conveys a sense of peace and joy. To live and embody grace is more than being kind or quiet, it means extending forgiveness even when it isn’t asked for. It means being patient when irritated. It means relying on faith for confidence. Grace is the ability to see things from another person’s perspective and to look at events and circumstances through another person’s eyes. Grace is an outstretched hand to help others and an offer of support and encouragement. Grace is a way of being that makes people want to be around you.

“Grit is not just a simple elbow-grease term for rugged persistence,” says Sarah Lewis, author, assistant professor at Harvard University and TED speaker. “It is an often invisible display of endurance that lets you stay in an uncomfortable place, work hard to improve upon a given interest and do it again and again.” Grit is a willingness to look at all aspects of life that are murky and lack clarity. It is often doing what we don’t want to do, such as facing difficult conversations, confrontations, hurt feelings, failures,

of character that helps you persevere through setbacks and struggles, in both personal life and business.”

falling and rising again and again. Grit is that quality within us that empowers us to embrace these challenges instead of avoiding them. -Grace cannot be fully recognized without grit, and grit cannot be appreciated without gratitude. When woven together, these three qualities help define a strong person and a competent leader. We hope you enjoy these stories of “Gratitude, Grace and Grit.”

Cultivating Her Own Way: Sumita Hintz Creates Positive Space for Helping & Healing By Erin Legg Photos by Uniquely Kayla Photography

S

umita Hintz has many roles. She is a physical therapist, having graduated from the University of Saskatchewan Master’s program in 2014. She is an entrepreneur with her own clinic: Prairie View Physiotherapy. She is a manager of a highly-skilled, tight-knit team of employees who care for hundreds of clients a year. She’s a wife, a mother and a woman of faith. She takes incredible pride in each of her roles and navigates throughout her day with grace.

20

R eFined YORKTON & AREA

Prairie View Physiotherapy opened in 2018 as a shared space with fellow physiotherapist, Jannalee Edgar. The duo had a solid business plan and optimistic perspectives for growth. However, their hopes were proved conservative, as within a couple of months of opening their doors, they had to expand and hire an administrator to keep up with the demand! Today, Prairie View is a welcoming place of healing. Services include sports,

post-op and neurological rehabilitation, acupuncture, dry needling, orthotic casting and vestibular treatment. With the up-and-coming addition of a new therapist, Prairie View will also begin offering pelvic floor rehabilitation. It’s the vast array of treatments, including massage and exercise therapies, that clients appreciate. Prairie View therapists care for clients’ bodies and minds using physical techniques as well as establishing genuine personal connections, often resulting in

friendships. Sumita says this connection is her favourite part of her job. “People come here to get better. They feel safe and their quality of life improves,” says Sumita. “They begin to understand that you can look after yourself without feeling guilty.” Establishing her own clinic was always a goal for Sumita. The opportunity to do so came years earlier than she expected, but she’s never been the type of woman to turn away from embracing change. “There’s always a fear of the unknown,” she admits, “but I’ve never thought about doing anything else.” Sumita points out that she is incredibly grateful for her staff. “One of my greatest achievements has been creating a place where people want to come for treatments and where people want to come to work,” she beams. “We look after our people, whether it’s through COVID, through the grief of losing a loved one, through the heartbreak of a failed relationship, through navigating life changes like starting a family.” Sumita actively supports physiotherapists and healthcare providers who are in the midst of their training. Prairie View hosts many students, whether local or international, as a way to incubate their professional skills as well as foster a love for healing. “We also welcome like-minded and complementary practitioners to work out of the Prairie View facility,” Sumita explains. “This allows for a more comprehensive treatment approach for the clientele.” Successfully managing her professional roles of both physiotherapist and clinic manager has hit some bumpy spots and taken refinement over the past couple of years, but Sumita has been able to establish a healthy work-life balance. At the end of the day, she finds solace in her support system: her faith in God, her loving husband, and her tight group of friends. Whether it’s playing with her daughter or attending church, Sumita

makes sure she takes restorative time to be her best self. “Life is too short to spend time doing something you don’t enjoy,” she says. This is something she talks about often with her patients, encouraging them to lose the fear of trying something new. “Prairie View has been a lot of hard work, but it’s been very rewarding.”

ooking to add a little something to your green space? Shamrock Greenhouse’s flowering and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs are ready to head to their new homes. They also have veggie plants for gardeners who like to snack on the fruits of their labour and rows and rows of hardy favourites that every gardener can coax into bloom.

Always ready to lend a hand choosing from the vast selection of plants, Shamrock Greenhouse’s owner, Barbara Curvollo, and her team, make the magic of gardening seem simple and enjoyable. Any gardener, whether they are planting an acreage garden or a sweet balcony container garden, will find something they love at Shamrock Greenhouse.

COVER FEATURE

Shamrock has been a Foam Lake staple for 34 years and many locals wait anxiously for the first week in May to visit and get into the spirit of spring after a long winter. Barbara has run the greenhouse for the last 14 years and has poured her heart into building the business that has been in her family for decades.

“Gardening is such a great hobby and I love to share it.”- Barbara Curvollo

“I love the first week of the season,” says Barbara.“It’s wonderful to see all my regular customers excited to get their hands in the soil again. I’ve had many people tell me they come here to forget about everything for a few hours. They are here to enjoy the smell of fresh soil and the sight of healthy plants. Gardening is such a great hobby and I love to share it.” Barbara and her staff work hard to make sure gardeners have access to everything they need to dig into spring. From seeds, flats and custom planted containers, to soil, fertilizers and so much more, Shamrock is a one stop shop for the savvy garden enthusiast. Barbara ensures they carry the products needed for local gardening success and they happily share tips on how to use them.

“I grew up at the greenhouse,” says Barbara. “I spent season after season exploring my love of horticulture and absorbing every bit of knowledge I could about plants and gardening.” After completing her post-secondary education in production horticulture, she returned to Foam Lake with exciting plans to make Shamrock Greenhouse a unique destination for locals and non-locals alike.

“After so many years working with thousands of different plants, I know about the challenges of growing a healthy garden in Saskatchewan. I’m always happy to give advice and I find it so rewarding when customers tell me stories about their gardening experiences. We have created a great community of people and I want to help it grow and prosper every season.”

Greeted by a cheerful logo of the lucky shamrock, customers drive into a wide and welcoming yard filled with sunshine and happy, healthy plants. From there they can immerse themselves in hours of exploring and planning, as their worries fall away. You might think a great gardening season has a lot to do with luck, but when you visit Shamrock, luck gets a helping hand from Barbara and her staff. You are sure to find what you are looking for. “Our vision is for all men and women to discover and achieve positive self-body image and overall sexual wellness,” says Phoebe Buckle, owner of Under the Covers. “We will work hard to answer questions and provide resources and information to help our customers achieve this.”

You can also book a private shopping party where you will gain product knowledge in the adult section and then shop at your leisure with your small group of people throughout the store. Connects People to our Big, Beautiful World By Erin Legg Photos Uniquely Kayla Photography

T

ammy Biblow is an adventurer by nature. She became a travel agent 11 years ago, and purchased Vacations Yorkton in 2015. It was a natural step in her career being able to blend her love for travel with her savvy customer service background. “You know, I don’t just book flights and hotels,” she says. “For some of my clients it feels like I’m helping make their dreams come true! I love bringing positivity to others and giving them a sense of possibility of what they can do.” Vacations Yorkton is led by Tammy and her team of two: Tricia Strutynski and Melissa Johnson. The trio are experienced world travelers who have worked with numerous tour operators all over the world. So when you go to them for help with planning your next vacation, expect the perfect fit. In addition to being locally owned and operated, Vacations Yorkton also has

a years-long track record of exceptional customer service. Take the global COVID-19 pandemic as an example. On March 16, 2020 the travel industry screeched to a halt. Tammy and her team didn’t even think twice before they were in action, spending long days and weeks repatriating clients who were stuck overseas – Australia, England, Mexico, the United States – during a time of extreme stress and uncertainty. The Vacations Yorkton team faced the global COVID-19 pandemic head-on. Since that time, Tammy has relocated the Vacations Yorkton storefront into her home office where she spends a lot of time connecting with other agents all over the country and staying current with her tour providers. When travel opens ups, she’s ready to book those dream trips again. “For a long time, travel was something people did when they retired,” she says. “But now people are making experiences a priority over tangible items.” The pandemic has weighed on Tammy’s shoulders. “I spend so much time building relationships with my clients, and now I’m not making anyone’s dreams come true,” she explains, longing for that component of her job. But, she also admits with a smile that she’s doing what she’s “born to do” and will never give up. Despite the times, Tammy is incredibly proud of her career and the business she operates. “The best phone calls I get are from my clients who call me when they return home to tell me they got engaged, or they reconnected with family, or it was the first trip as husband and wife and now they’re addicted to the adventure!” she beams. “Anytime I can

coordinate an adventure it’s my favourite accomplishment!” While you’re waiting for the restrictions to lift, why not ask your local travel expert for information about your dream vacation? There is no extra cost to you to use their services. Vacations Yorkton motto is: “Life is short and the world is wide.” If there is something to be learned from the past year it’s to never take opportunities for exploration for granted. Tammy eagerly awaits jumping back into the travel game. “We’re a one-stop-shop. We make your dream come true, big or small. Whether it’s a hotel room or a river cruise, there’s nothing we won’t do.” “COVID has reminded us of why we do what we do,” she smiles. “We’re still here and when the time is right, we’re ready for you.” Vacations Yorkton 306.782.3707 tammy@vacationsyorkton.ca www.vacationsyorkton.ca

Butterflies To attract butterflies, you need to attract adult butterflies with nectar, and provide a good place for them to rest and lay their eggs. Butterflies love red, orange, yellow, purple and pink flowers and like bees, they like single blooming flowers. They love the sun, and rocky places where they can settle. They also like protection, like shrubs and tall grasses to lay their eggs. Flowers: Azalea, bee balm, columbine, dianthus, echinacea, foxglove, hyssop, marigold, milkweed, phlox, salvia and snapdragon, sweet pea and zinnia.

POLLINATORS If you really want to make your garden thrive, and help the environment, one of the best things you can do is attract and support pollinators in your yard. Hummingbirds These tiny birds need a source of nectar and water. The ruby-throated hummingbird is found in Saskatchewan, and it’s a thrill to have one visit your garden. To attract them, place a hummingbird feeder with sugar water in your yard. You should also entice them with plants they love, including petunia, bee balm, columbine (especially red), hollyhock, foxglove, dahlia, begonia and fuschia.

Bees Bees need nectar and pollen for food. They love bright colours and lots of fragrance, and the closer together, the better. Big flower beds and flowering borders are bee heaven. Bees love blue, violet, purple, white and yellow and they adore single blooming flowers.

DID YOU KNOW? A hummingbird can produce up to 200 wing strokes per second?

Suggested plantings for bees: Flowers: Hollyhock, alyssum, foxglove, candytuft, bee balm, liatris, daisy, snapdragon, columbine, aster and zinnia. Herbs: Thyme, oregano, lavender, mint, catnip, rosemary, mint and borage.

DID YOU KNOW?

They also love blossoms like lilac, honeysuckle, apple, cherry, chokecherry and saskatoon berry.

Bees, like birds, need a bath. A clean, shallow water source in the garden helps bees. Placing rock islands in an existing bird bath allows bees to have a place to land to have a drink. R eFined YORKTON & AREA

How to Choose the Right Real Estate Agent

C

hoosing the right realtor makes the buying and selling process easier and is one of the most important decisions you make when buying or selling a home. A good agent can help you navigate the process with minimal stress, whereas someone not so skilled may make the process harder on you and your family. When you’re ready to choose a real estate agent, the first goal is to find someone you can trust and feel comfortable with. You also want to work with someone who is easy to communicate with and has proven local knowledge of the market. When you are searching for the right realtor, there are no dumb questions. Ask about anything and everything you can think of. This will help you learn about the agent and

32

R eFined YORKTON & AREA

identify potential red flags. You want your goals to be their No. 1 priority. Consider compatibility and personality When you are buying a home you will be spending a lot of time looking at homes in the company of your realtor. Ensuring your personalities mesh is important. Take your time choosing someone who is relatable and is a good fit for your personality. Choose for you, not for the house. If you are a “move forward and get things done” kind of person, do you want a super laid back realtor or vice versa? You need to choose an agent who you feel comfortable around and who shares your way of embracing life.

BUSINESS

Whether it’s business or pleasure, finding the right person comes down to principals and values. Look for open, honest communication and trust As the client, you begin the dialogue. Pay close attention to the agent or broker and how he/she listens and asks questions. Ensure you hire an agent who is willing and able to answer any and all questions you might have about the home purchasing process. Ask about how often the agent will communicate with you. As a seller, ask about the ways the agent will market your home. If you’re a buyer, ask how frequently you expect them to send you listings. Look at the agent’s work.

The easiest and most valuable way is to review how they’re marketing other properties. Look at their listing materials, website, brochures and signage. Pay attention to their personal appearance. Look for passion, conviction and honesty. Finally, whether you are buying or selling, determine if the realtor is honest and straight-forward about real estate market conditions. An agent who is more interested in telling you what you want to hear is not the best choice. This is one of those life situations when even if the truth hurts, you need to know. Local experience matters Check on the real estate agent’s experience, education, productivity and references. Accomplished agents know the market and the best strategies to sell your home. They should know the trends and be on top of all the latest market statistics. They should be there to guide you and offer recommendations when necessary. It is also a great idea to check the number of transactions they handle monthly or even yearly, as this can be a good indication of their commitment to the real estate profession. Ask a potential agent how many years they’ve been buying and selling homes, and what types of services they provide. Inquire about the basics, like average time on the market for newly listed homes and average sale prices. Ask about their average list-price-to-saleprice ratio, as well as the amount of time it typically takes their clients to find and close on their new home. You’ll want to choose a real estate agent who has a proven track record of getting buyers into homes quickly at a good price. Social media use and reviews References and testimonials from past clients can be another good way to help you make your decision. Positive Reviews are a sign that clients are happy with the agent. There’s no bigger compliment to an agent than a referral from a past client. Ask other buyers or sellers who they would recommend. Social media also gives a good indication of the success of a particular realtor. Most professional realtors are active on

Facebook, Instagram and even Twitter. Facebook will typically have quite a few listings and lots of comments. Check to see how they use social media. Do they actually do paid advertising campaigns, or simply post your listings for a few friends/followers to see? Do they submit your listing to online classified websites such as Kijiji? Do they utilize Google to further market your home around the Internet, or ensure it appears at the top of search results? What your realtor does Your realtor wears many hats, as they have many roles to play, depending on whether they are representing you as the buyer’s agent or the seller’s agent. As a local expert, they can provide guidance on neighbourhoods that would be a good fit for you and your family.

his seasoned REALTOR® has more than two decades of experience finding her clients the perfect home. There’s no secret to her success – she works hard and gives every client her full attention. Carma loves her job, and it shows. “I love meeting people. I love that every day is different. I love the challenge of finding the right home and helping my clients’ dreams come true,” she says. With the real estate industry booming these days thanks to low mortgage rates, the growth of the local economy, and the general appreciation of owning a home – it may feel like an overwhelming process to buyers and sellers. When you’re making one of the largest financial decisions of your life, you need a seasoned professional by your side. That’s where Carma steps in. “I make sure my clients are enjoying the process of buying or selling a home by taking all of the extra stress off their shoulders,” she says.

Throughout Carma’s 20 years as a REALTOR® she’s learned that resiliency is key. “I always keep my clients’

priorities top of mind,” she explains. “I know nothing is set in stone until the deal is done, and I must be able to adapt and move in situations to make sure their goals are achieved.” Carma has a proven resiliency record. She was running her own luxury real estate and mortgage brokerage in Mexico catering to American and Canadian clientele, when the 2008 financial crisis smashed the industry. Overnight she lost her customer base and mortgage funding. Rather than panic or give up, she pivoted her expertise to the Mexican nationals and their vacation property desires. When Carma decided to return home to Yorkton in 2012, she was excited to get back to her roots and help others find a home in the community she loves and respects. “I’m a fourth generation Yorktonite!” she beams with pride. “I am happy to be raising my son here with the same values and sense of community I had growing up.” Have you been searching endlessly for the perfect home in your most desired neighbourhood, but nothing is coming up? You need an agent who can dig a bit deeper and put out some feelers. Who knows? The payoff could be a new home! “I have wonderful relationships with other REALTORS® and brokerages in Yorkton, and I’m more than happy to phone them up and ask if they know of a property coming up that’s not on MLS yet,” she explains. Carma has worked with numerous well-respected professionals throughout the community and can make suitable recommendations to her clients. Whether it’s a mortgage broker, lawyer, or property inspector, she wants her clients to work with only the best.

Carma’s longevity in the real estate industry is attributed to the value she places on honesty and integrity. “I’m not looking to make a quick buck,” she says. “I do what I do because I love building relationships with my clients, and I do that through good communication and customer service.”

he Yorkton Exhibition Grandstand has been a community gathering place for over a century with the first grandstand being built in 1914. In 1948 a cyclone came through the city destroying this iconic structure. While events continued on the exhibition grounds, it was clear that a new grandstand was needed, so in 1958 the Yorkton Exhibition

raised the funds to construct a second grandstand which still stands today. Now it’s time to replace the 1958 structure with a grandstand that can continue to serve as a hub to bring friends and neighbours together. The first fair was held in 1884 and while it has changed over the years, the Yorkton Exhibition has continued

with the annual event for over 135 years attracting thousands of people to our community. The grandstand alone draws over 60,000 guests annually which results in many of our attendees visiting our local hotels, restaurants and businesses having an annual economic impact of over $5,000,000 for our community. Some of the events held over the years on the grandstand include:

COMFOR T AND CREAT IVI T Y

Home décor trends for 2021

A

fter a year that forced many of us to spend more time than ever in our living space, the changing season is an opportunity to bring comfort and creativity to our homes. People are looking to create living spaces that closely resemble a comfortable, private sanctuary. From a return to the comfort of Grandma’s house to calming Zen-rooms to stylish approaches to home office design, this year’s home décor ideas are sure to please.

Zen-inspired décor We all have a few at-home items we treasure and turn to when we need to unwind and mentally check out. It seems that now, more than ever, we’re seeking solace in comforting, familiar objects around the house — salt lamps, meditation pillows or even a good set of bed sheets. With people spending so much more time at home, they are looking to add layers of functional comfort to their

space. Overstuffed furniture, softer curves and traditional styles are things they can count on. We suggest looking for sofas, sectionals and armchairs that have a comfortable look and feel — something you could really curl up on and binge-watch TV or read a good book. Bring the outside in Green, green and more green. Houseplants are crucial elements of

home décor this year. Bringing nature inside the living room is a great strategy. It not only benefits our mental health but helps keep our indoor air clean and fresh. After spending so much of 2020 isolated from others in our homes, bringing nature indoors connects us back with the outdoor world. Plants transform the atmosphere of our indoor spaces effortlessly and inexpensively. Trending house plants in 2021 include Fishbone Cactus, Velvet Calathea and Snake Plant. and even insulated options. Blinds are also available in a variety of materials and styles, such as wood, faux-wood with embossed colours that look like real wood, and vinyl. Blinds can also be horizontal or vertical and either corded, cordless or motorized. Natural elements like wicker and rattan are making a comeback in 2021 as well. “Woven wood” shades or “natural woven” shades are a great way to incorporate the trend. Made from natural materials like jute and bamboo, they add a warm, rich dimension to any room. Grandmillennial style The grandmillennial style combines modern design with the décor you might

expect to see in your grandparents’ home. Inspired by the comforts of Grandma’s home, millennials are decorating with a nostalgic sense of style that strives to soothe the uncertainties of the world. This trend is all about younger generations who love design and décor that we might culturally view as “grandma-ish.” It hinges on classical design forms and patterns, historic architecture, and, of course, florals. Grandmillennial is also an appealing design style because it’s affordable and eco-friendly in practice. Somewhat unexpectedly, these kinds of nostalgic interiors are having their big moment right now, and that is going to continue in 2021. The grandmillennial style offers comfort and the safe cocoon of old days, with a feeling that’s fresh enough to enchant young generations. -There are no two ways about it: the best way to usher in the summer season is by giving your home a warm-weather refresh. These decorating ideas are really just an excuse to spruce up your living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, or office with pastel accents, straightfrom-your-garden seasonal centrepieces, and cheery colours. As an added bonus, several of these ideas align with this year’s biggest home décor trends, like pops of live greenery and accessories in the newest seasonal colours.

Creating Multipurpose Space at Home

U

nsurprisingly, multifunctional spaces continue to be one of the biggest interior design trends for 2021. A global lifestyle change has introduced new and different requirements for our living space. As a result, the need for more efficient space has opened new perspectives in the way we view homes. Depending on the size of your place, your budget and other lifestyle needs, creating a home office — or otherwise multifunctional space — that’s both beautiful and actually useful, could require some pretty serious ingenuity. Search for inspiration in vertical space and look for rooms that have lower traffic to see what ways they could be reworked to increase their usability. Re-explore basements and garages as well as oversized closets and guest rooms.

when they are not in use. Or set aside space at the kitchen counter to serve as a home office during working hours with a nearby cabinet to tuck away the papers and electronics when work is done. Creating zones within rooms is an efficient way to increase the multipurpose view of a space. There should be a focal point for each zone in order to distinguish it for work, play or relaxation. A splash of colour or piece of art, an area rug or throw pillow can also help anchor each area and create a focal point. In 2021, our living areas will continue to function as multipurpose, hybrid spaces and thinking about how a room can function better will be at the forefront of design.

A house operates as a system so all the elements of a house — the environment,

envelope, mechanical systems and occupant activities — affect each other, and the result affects the performance of the house as a whole. 1. Insulation. Insulation acts as a barrier to heat gain and loss. This is particularly true in floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs. In most homes, insulation is the most cost effective and practical way to make your house energy efficient. By insulating your house,

you’ll keep warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Insulation helps you save up to 40 per cent in cooling and heating bills. Moreover, it may reduce condensation at home. This goes miles in providing health benefits through a reduction in dampness and mould. Spray-foam insulation is made of plastic resin (think soy-based resins or resins

window. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat and the better the insulating properties. In the winter, heat stays in and in the summer heat stays out. Windows with higher R-values translate into: • Lower energy consumption in the home • Reduced solar heat gain • Consistent temperature uniformity and increased home comfort 4. Solar panels. We can’t talk about energy-efficient home design without taking a look at solar panels. More homeowners are adopting solar energy than ever before, and for good reason.

made from recycled plastic) and a catalyst, which is prepared and applied on the job site. Whole house foam insulation costs a few thousand dollars and, as you would expect, is unlikely to help you make a killing on the local real estate market. However, targeted insulation projects that address specific issues with your property, or help you to extend the usable living space by a considerable amount, could well net you a positive return when the time comes to sell up and move on. 2. Heating and cooling systems. HVAC systems tend to represent the largest single category of energy end use in most homes. These projects can

have significant expense savings as well — cutting heating bills by as much as half (depending on the unit selected and envelope and air tightness of the home). All systems have energy rating codes, which indicate their efficiency. Ask your contractor to explain the difference in numbers. Contractors can now install hot water circulating loops that use a small pump to accelerate delivery of hot water to remote fixtures, which works great with low-flow fixtures. 3. Windows. R-values are most commonly associated with wall insulation and if you think of it in that respect, better-insulated windows (higher R-values) slow the rate of heat transfer (heat resistance) through the

As solar technology improves, many people are finding the benefits of solar panels are worth the investment. Solar panels are designed with one purpose in mind: to harness the power of the sun and create usable electricity. This means you can sit back and relax while the sun does the hard work for you. As solar panels become cheaper to make, homeowners are finding systems to be more affordable than ever before. The cost of installing a solar panel system depends on your region’s policies, how much sunshine your home gets, and the size of system you purchase. As R-Values go up, your costs go down! Energy-efficient upgrades will not only shrink your utility bill, they can also increase the value of your home.

Applewood Smoked Chicken Wow your taste buds with this melt-in-your-mouth Applewood Smoked Chicken! Prepped with a brown sugar, smoky paprika and garlic based rub, this smoked chicken tastes amazing! Prep Time 15 mins Cook Time 5 hrs Total Time 5 hrs 15 mins

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed 2 Tablespoons chili powder 1 Tablespoon smoked paprika 1 Tablespoon onion powder 1 Tablespoon garlic powder 1 Tablespoon oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 whole chicken, 4 to 5 pounds 5. INSTRUCTIONS 1.

Take the chicken and remove all the inside parts that need to be tossed out.

2.

Place the whole chicken on a cutting board, cut the chicken with a meat cleaver down the middle of the breast. Place in a 9x13 glass pyrex dish.

3.

4.

In a small bowl, mix all the dry rub ingredients listed above. Generously rub the chicken that is still in the Pyrex dish with the mixture until rub is gone. Place plastic wrap over the Pyrex dish and refrigerate overnight. Marinate the chicken for at least 8 to 12 hours. After the chicken has marinated, turn on your smoker (or light it) and let it preheat until the smoker hits 225 degrees.

6.

Fill the entire wood pan with wood chunks or chips. If you use chunks, they will last the entire smoke time without you having to refill the pan. If you use wood chips, they will burn out by the end of the smoke time so check them every 2-3 hours and add more if they have burned out. Once the smoker is preheated and the wood pan and water pan are prepped, place the whole chicken on the rack breast side up and close your smoker. You should expect to see a lot of smoke in the first 2 hours and then it will die down a bit.

7.

Smoke the chicken at 225 degrees for about 4 to 5 hours. Sometimes the smoker temperature will get up to 250, but never let it go over that.

8.

At the 4th hour, insert a digital thermometer to see how much longer it has before reaching 165 degrees. When the chicken is done,

turn the smoker off and remove the chicken. 9.

Your chicken should be at 165 degrees - check to see if it is done at the chicken breast and legs.

10. Let the chicken sit for about 10 minutes before slicing and eating. Notes When you slow smoke a whole chicken, the skin can become dry and rubbery. And those of you who love to eat the skin will want to make sure it's moist and delicious. Here's a trick you can try for delicious and moist skin. Take a large cheesecloth and soak it in melted butter. Drape it over the chicken before you put it in the smoker. Smoke the whole chicken with the cheesecloth on the entire time and then remove it 30 minutes before it's done.
