BEST OF YOU - HEALTH & WELLNESS

A New Year, A New Sustainable You! Committing to healthier living isn’t just about calories and fitness. Choosing a healthier lifestyle also means making smarter choices for the world around you, especially when it comes to eating and other daily routines. Commit to doing your part for a healthier environment with these tips:

In and Around the Kitchen What you eat accounts for a great deal of your environmental impact – in fact, more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity can be attributed to the way people produce, process and package food, according to a United Nations-backed study. Factors like animal agriculture, processing, packaging and transportation all influence a food product’s cost to the earth. Being conscious of where and how you shop for food can have a positive effect on the world around you. For example, by shopping local, you can reduce transportation impact. Choosing to buy in-season produce as opposed to fruits and veggies from other regions can also help.

Consider Your Food Footprint One simple step you can take is to check the packaging of foods you buy to understand their carbon footprint. For example, each box of Airly Oat Cloud crackers helps remove greenhouse gases from the air through an innovative farming technique that makes agriculture a solution, not a contributor, to climate change. The carbon footprint is on the back of every box, so you can see how many grams of carbon dioxide you are helping remove from the air and start rethinking the food supply chain. Sustainable doesn’t have to mean bland or expensive, however. Made with real, wholesome and 100% truly delicious ingredients, all four flavor varieties (Cheddar, Sea Salt, Chocolate and Salted Caramel) make for delicious, satisfying, convenient anytime snacks.

the earth’s vegetation.

Eat Less Meat For many people, creating a more balanced diet means adding more fruits and veggies while cutting back on things like meat and carbs. Diet aside, eating less meat can promote environmental health, too. Agriculture, and livestock production in particular, contributes to global warming. Livestock animals are a significant source of methane gas, which can be more detrimental than carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and is growing at a rapid pace, according to the International Panel on Climate Change. The livestock industry also affects land usage and clean water, among other environmental concerns.

Practice Upcycling Giving new life to old things is known as upcycling. It’s a concept that keeps useful things with plenty of functional life from filling landfills. You can practice upcycling by reimagining everything from furniture to clothing. Before tossing an item, consider how it could be used differently or serve a new purpose

Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Some cleaning products are full of chemicals that pose hazards to the environment. Green products are generally free of those harsh, smelly chemicals and often come in packaging that is more earthfriendly, too. If you make your own ecofriendly cleaners using household ingredients like baking soda, vinegar and lemon, you can also save some money.

Keep Your Pets Safe In The

n e d r Ga If you have pets that enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s important to make sure your yard is a safe place for them to be. Consider these hazards that can negatively impact the well-being of your furry friends. Poisonous Plants – Some common plants can be dangerous for animals, causing anything from mild oral irritations and upset stomachs to cardiovascular damage and even death. For example, these are some of the toxic plants the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has identified as harmful for either cats or dogs:

Mulch and Compost – The decomposing elements that make compost good can be bad for pets, according to the National Garden Society. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced off area so pets can’t get to it. Cocoa mulch can be a particular problem for dogs. A byproduct of chocolate production, cocoa mulch can cause digestive problems and even seizures in dogs. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice.

Aloe – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia and depression Azalea – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, cardiovascular collapse and death Burning bush – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weakness, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities with large doses Caladium – can cause burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing

Fertilizer and Insecticides – The chemicals used to get rid of pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poison, according to the ASPCA. Follow all instructions carefully, and store pesticides and fertilizers in a secure area out of the reach of animals. Fleas and Ticks – In addition to using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars and sprays, make sure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms and anemia. Ticks can do all of that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.

e H r u o Y t c e t o May Help Pr

Many people are aware healthy habits like regular exercise and eating nutritious foods promote better heart health. However, it’s lesser known that your oral health and heart health risk may be connected. In fact, a study from “Inside Dentistry” suggests as many as 50% of heart attacks may be triggered by an oral infection. While research continues to fully understand the relationship between oral hygiene and cardiovascular health, studies have revealed correlations between the two. For example, according to a study published in the “European Journal of Preventive Cardiology,” patients with improved oral hygiene had a lower risk for atrial fibrillation and heart failure compared with those with poor oral hygiene. What’s more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by age 34, approximately 50% of people have experienced periodontal disease, which suggests a high percentage of the population could benefit from improved oral hygiene and preventative care.

“Given the prevalence of poor oral hygiene in the U.S., understanding the crucial link between oral health and heart health is a game-changer in developing treatment plans,” said Dr. Eric Goulder, founder of the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center of Central Ohio.

Flossing daily can also help remove plaque and trapped particles between teeth.

To help protect your oral and heart health, consider these tips from ProBiora Health, a leader in oral-care probiotics: Think of your care providers as a team. This means sharing your health conditions with your dentist and your dental concerns with your doctor. While each specializes in different aspects of your health care, when everyone involved is aware of potential problems, they can help you create a proactive care plan. Practice good oral health habits. If you don’t already have regular oral hygiene habits, it’s never too late to start. Brush at least twice a day and after every meal, if possible.

Protect your mouth with probiotic bacteria daily. In addition to brushing and flossing, add beneficial bacteria (probiotics) by taking an oral care probiotic to balance the natural bacteria load in your mouth. Used daily, an oral care probiotic lozenge can effectively replenish the good bacteria naturally found in the mouth, crowding out harmful bacteria that can cause plaque, gum disease, cavities and inflammation. For example, when ProBiora Health probiotics dissolve in the mouth, saliva hydrates the probiotics, which migrate to mouth tissue, gums, gum pockets and tooth surfaces where they work to reduce bad bacteria. Schedule regular preventive care. Visiting your dentist regularly can help manage potential problems before they become major concerns. Most dentists suggest scheduling checkup and cleaning appointments every six months. When using oral care probiotics, your checkup may go better than expected.

Don’t wait to take action. If you notice any concerning symptoms that could be an indication of an oral health problem, schedule an appointment immediately rather than waiting for your next checkup. Possible concerns could include signs of infection such as red, swollen or sore gums; bleeding when you brush, floss or eat; an unexplained bad taste in your mouth; or problems with bad breath.

3 EASY EFFECTIVE WAYS TO BOOST PARENTS CONFIDENCE As many parents can attest, raising healthy, happy, confident children is demanding, especially because their children’s well-being is impacted by almost every decision they make. Even the most confident person can have moments of doubt, and societal, economic and pandemic-related issues compound these challenges. In fact, 1 in 6 parents said “parenting during COVID-19 has been the most stressful time of my life,” according to a KinderCare and Harris Poll survey. As parents look to move beyond these issues, the survey also found parents feel more confident in their parenting abilities with 86% reporting they “feel confident in their parenting on a typical day.” “Knowing their children are in a safe and secure environment goes a long way to support parent confidence,” said Dr. Elanna Yalow, chief academic officer of KinderCare Learning Centers. “Focusing on nurturing the whole child, as well as protecting health and safety, gives

parents peace of mind and enhances their confidence that their children are off to the best start in life.” Consider these three things parents can do to help boost confidence in their parenting skills: Communicate Early and Often Whether your child is in child care or school, ensuring your family has open and consistent communication with care providers and teachers is vital. Families and teachers or care providers share an important role in educating and caring for young children. By regularly sharing stories and observations about each child’s progress, teachers can reassure families their children are recognized and valued as the unique people they are. Ask Questions to Reduce Concerns Few things help bolster parent confidence more than knowing their children are safe and sound, no matter where they are. Be sure to ask your child care provider or school for more information about its health and safety protocols and emergency plan.

Gallagher Stucco

Knowing how certain situations will be handled can reduce uncertainty and stress. Families seeking child care should ensure they have a list of questions to ask potential providers to help them feel confident in their decisions. Become an Advocate for Families Parents are increasingly leveraging work flexibility to be more present in their children’s lives; 65% of survey participants said “having enough time to spend with my children” was a top factor in boosting their confidence levels. If you’d like to try hybrid work or have more support for your child care needs, talk with your employer about child care benefits. It may be helpful to talk with coworkers first to understand their needs so you can advocate for the needs of all parents, not just yourself Potential benefits could include the ability to have a flexible work schedule that supports children’s routines and needs, an employer-sponsored child care tuition subsidy or backup care. You’re likely not alone in your desire for child care benefits. The majority of parents surveyed said they would stay in their current jobs if child care benefits were offered.

FITNESS TRENDS

In adjusting to the constraints of the pandemic, many had to improvise where and how they work out. After months of adapting to a “gym anywhere” mentality and learning to accommodate more flexible workout schedules, this new fitness mindset is inspiring some larger trends for healthier living. “We’ve learned that wellness is not one-size fits all, and that it’s achieved by small habits like regular hydration that can really impact how you feel throughout the day,” said celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak, MsC. “Collectively, nourishing both body and mind together as one makes holistic health a sustainable lifestyle.” Pasternak and the experts at Propel Fitness Water are forecasting five fitness and wellness trends to watch for in 2022:

mentality is a level of flexibility many are holding on to, even as they ease back into more normal work routines.

Accountability Buddies When gym closures ran rampant, folks leaned on others for inspiration to get moving, so it’s no surprise working out in pairs (or more) is a continued way to focus on fitness. Feelings of burnout may be common heading into 2022, so having a partner who gives you a healthy sense of camaraderie and competition can help push you to show up on days when you’d rather rest and stay committed to your goals. It also provides a sounding board when you need suggestions for nutritious recipes or fresh at-home cardio ideas.

Wellness Goals vs. Fitness Committing to overall wellness is more about lifestyle changes than numbers like weight loss or muscle mass. People embracing this trend are forgoing

Health in Small, Achievable Doses This trend is all about recognizing health transformations don’t happen overnight, and even modest steps can make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day. One example is paying more attention to your hydration. If you aren’t properly hydrated, few other things tend to go right either. Small habits like throwing Propel Powder Packs into your gym, work or school bag can make a difference. Filled with enough electrolytes to replace what is lost in sweat, they are handy for on-the-go hydration and are easy to add to a water bottle.

Versatility in Gym Spaces and Schedules When a large segment of the workforce started working from home, the rituals of before- and after-work gym visits fell by the wayside. People grew more accustomed to improvising where they work out, whether it was their neighbor’s garage, their living room or a running path in the city. As exercisers are less beholden to studio or gym schedules, the “gym anywhere” 12 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

numeric goals based on performance in the gym or on the scale and instead emphasizing outcomes that affect life, nourishing both body and mind together as one. Fitness goals are an essential component, but so is supporting your mental health as well as being cognizant of what you’re putting into your body. When each piece is well taken care of, your body is better able to work like a well-oiled machine. Low-Impact Workouts This year, walking treadmill challenges gained virality on social media, marking the increasing popularity of workouts that are low impact yet effective. Getting moving is the key, even if it means taking your tempo down. You don’t need to do hours of HIIT every day to see results. In fact, less time- and energy-intensive workouts are easier to sustain and can often yield the same, or better, results. Find more hydration options and wellness tips at propelwater.com.

CHILLIN’, GRILLIN’ AND MORE........ RCM Outdoors Is Your Destination To Fire Up The Good Times!

By Brook Thalgott

As another Saskatchewan summer arrives, there is one place you need to go immediately. Yorkton’s RCM Outdoors is ready to make your meals out of this world. Owners Ryan and Curtis Monette have taken their hobby out of their backyards and into a space guaranteed to make your mouth water. “I got into cooking and barbecuing for something to do, and it snowballed,” says Curtis. “I was never much of a griller before, but as I explored smoking and barbecuing my hobby just kept evolving as I learned and experimented.” Their love of the grill and smoker grew until it became their new business.

“I got into cooking and barbecuing for something to do, and it snowballed”

Ryan and Curtis—also local paramedics—started RCM Outdoors two years ago as an offshoot of their existing business in health and safety. “We started exploring online for new grills and smokers, and came across Hamrforge, a line of charcoal barbecues, smokers and fire pits,” says Curtis. “No one in Western Canada was selling it and we thought we’d bring a few in mostly for our own interest and see what happens.” 14 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

Our clients are the #1 priority and we work diligently to ensure that our team has the proper tools and skills to equip them to serve efficiently. I’m excited to announce, I’m following my heart and getting back into the real estate industry! I grew up on a farm in the Canora area. After graduating from high school I took the Office Administration course offered through SIAST in Yorkton, SK. It was then that I realized Yorkton was a great place to live and work, which is why I chose to call it home. My time away from real estate allowed me to gain experience in customer service and Human Resources. Working in Human Resources gave me the opportunity to build my skills in understanding the situations people are experiencing and help them achieve a positive outcome. What attracted me to join CORE Real Estate Inc. is their approach to building relationships with clients, being community-minded, and their team approach in business. I recognize and value all they do and want to help contribute in the same way. “A home is YOUR story! Whether your buying, selling, upgrading, or planning for your retirement, let ME help you with the next chapter.” I’m motivated, energetic, and ready to help you turn your dreams into reality!” Let’s start this journey as a team!

6 Ways

To Help Businesses In Your Community Thrive Small business owners faced the challenges of the past couple of years head-on. Nearly all re-evaluated their operations to accommodate new ways of doing business amid changing safety standards and local protocols, and many plan to make these changes permanent. Over the past year, pandemic-related operational challenges, combined with a surge in physical and verbal attacks, have been uniquely difficult for a group of small business owners. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) businesses comprise nearly 10% of small businesses in the United States. Among them, 92% faced difficulties keeping their businesses open and operating amid the pandemic, according to Bank of America’s 2021 AAPI Business Owner Spotlight. “While almost all AAPI entrepreneurs said the pandemic created additional stress around running their businesses, they remain determined and resilient,” said Carol Lee Mitchell, head of small business strategy at Bank of America. “Even as they faced immense obstacles, AAPI business owners took steps to move their businesses and communities forward.”

Choose to Shop Local and Small Small businesses are ingrained in many local communities. When you choose to purchase from a small business, you’re directly supporting neighbors, friends and the people in your community. This support isn’t taken for granted by entrepreneurs; more than half of AAPI small business owners noted the importance of community support amid the pandemic. Also consider leaving a generous tip when you receive exceptional service – it can make a big difference for small business staff.

Gift Local Keep the impact that your support could have on local community businesses in mind when shopping for gifts, whether they’re for loved ones near or far. For locals, a gift card to a nearby eatery or business such as a spa, salon or recreation center makes for a welcome gift that keeps

Help Spread the Word Small businesses don’t usually have the means to invest in big marketing programs, so referrals and word of mouth can make a major difference. However, in today’s world, a great deal of consumer research happens online. That means you can be most helpful by taking your stories of great service and quality products to the internet, too. Seek out your favorite small businesses and write reviews on their social media channels. Take it a step further and give them a shoutout (with tags, if possible) on your own social media accounts where your friends and family are more likely to notice.

Local companies, including AAPI businesses, have proven to be fundamental to strong, healthy economies and inclusive communities. These entrepreneurs remain solution-oriented, quickly adopting new tools and strategies; however, they require support from customers and community members to thrive. Consider these ways you can support small businesses, including AAPI owners and the community at-large, from the experts at Bank of America: 22 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

your money local. When gifting those who live farther away, you can still benefit small businesses in your community by purchasing a thoughtful gift and packaging locally then shipping it with the help of a business in your area

BUSINESS

Help Fill Open Positions The job market has shifted noticeably over the past year, and local businesses have been struggling to find the talent they need to continue to serve their communities. Small business owners recognize this and are shifting benefits for their employees, allowing for more flexible schedules and additional paid time off. Since these business owners are looking for employees to help fill some of the uptick in demand, you can help by tapping into your own network and recommending people for different positions you see, whether it be through “Help Wanted” signs or based on the needs you hear from the businesses you patronize.

Be Mindful of Business Challenges Finding a work-life balance can be difficult for small business owners even in non-pandemic times because they wear so many

hats within their businesses, from CEO and salesperson to human resources and everything in between. Business owners were more conscious of their mental health over the past year, as nearly all AAPI business owners acknowledged additional stress and more than half set aside specific time for self-care and mental wellness. As a consumer, it’s important to be mindful of the fact that business owners are both short-staffed and dealing with supply chain issues. Take an understanding approach and work with local businesses to make sure they know they are supported by their community.

Check In on What’s New Just as you’ve changed your consumer habits and needs, small businesses have adapted in dozens of ways. That could mean you have access to new services or options you never considered. For example, your favorite yoga studio BUSINESS

may offer streaming classes or a favorite breakfast cafe you haven’t visited in a while might have an all-new menu. Take time to stop in and learn how your favorite businesses are changing with the times and see how those changes may suit your needs.

JOB INTERVIEW TIPS:

DO’S & DON’TS

Do:

Don’t:

- Dress to impress. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and presentable. - Make eye contact, and begin with a strong handshake. This will signal your confidence when you meet your interviewer for the first time. - Sit still, with your feet firmly on the ground. This will help you maintain your posture and avoid fidgeting. - Remember your CV details. In particular the experience most relevant to the role you’re interviewing for. - Make a note of your questions. Bring a note-pad if you feel you might forget important points. - Remember. It’s just as important for the interviewer to sell the benefits of working at their business, as it is for you to impress your next potential employer.

- Turn up late to the interview. If for some reason on the day it’s unavoidable, call ahead to let your interviewer know your expected time of arrival. - Dress sloppily or inappropriately. Not sure what to wear? Read our guidelines. - Smoke before your interview. Whilst a quick cigarette might seem like a good idea to calm your nerves, the smell will be noticeable and unpleasant for your interviewer. - Volunteer your weaknesses. Whilst honesty is always the best policy, there is no need to volunteer your shortfalls unless asked directly. - Criticise your current or previous employer. Doing so could give your interviewer the impression you’re difficult to work with.

Small business administrators are typically among the most competent multi-taskers, but even the most talented jugglers occasionally end up with too many balls in the air. Attracting and retaining employees doesn’t have to be part of your juggling act; in fact, having the right team can make the rest of your business run smoother. As a small business administrator, you may wear many hats, such as running the front desk, ordering supplies, managing accounting, onboarding and more. When you have extra hands to allocate the work, your business is likely to be more efficient and productive. Make employee retention a priority for your business with these practices: Create a positive work culture When employees enjoy coming to work each day, it shows. Your customers recognize it, and your internal team can feel it, too. A positive work culture encourages excellence, forgives mistakes, and leaves plenty of room for having fun. You can create a positive culture by making sure expectations are clearly defined and giving feedback that is consistent and fair. Provide an appealing salary and benefits package A competitive salary that aligns with expertise is an obvious edge in hiring top talent. You can become a more attractive employer by offering a benefits package that includes paid time off, insurance and

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN ATTRACT AND RETAIN EMPLOYEES other extras. Voluntary benefits, offer customizable solutions for businesses and their employees. These benefits can provide flexibility to employees by catering to certain stages of life and lifestyles and to employers by offering various funding options like 100% employee-paid or employer-employee shared funding. With low premiums, many small business owners can achieve significant returns and invest in benefits to attract talent and retain loyal employees. Allow for flexible schedules In large part due to the pandemic, employees have learned to juggle their work and home lives like never before. The businesses who recognize this need have an

edge, particularly for employees who need flexibility to care for family members. The degree of flexibility you can offer may vary depending on the business model. Communicating with your employees and working to make reasonable accommodations can go a long way toward attracting strong candidates and retaining current employees. Provide opportunities for growth Employees typically look for opportunities to learn and grow through additional responsibility, compensation and rewards for performance that encourage long-term commitment. Working with employees to understand their career goals is an important step on a path for growth that is mutually beneficial.

Renovating?

Test for asbestos first. Before 1990, asbestos was commonly used in more than 3,000 building materials and other products. When disturbed, tiny asbestos fibres are released into the air where they can get into the lungs and cause severe damage over many years. If you think there is a risk of asbestos in your home or office, test for it to protect yourself and your family.

YORKTON BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT “Creating A Positive Impact On The Yorkton Business District” Not too many are aware of what YBID actually stands for....Yorkton Business Improvement District! And their name is exactly what they do....Improve. Members include a board of directors but also include every business owner that is situated in the district. When visitors come to Yorkton and drive through our downtown area, they are usually not aware of where all the improvements to our downtown came from. A majority of these are provided by the YBID itself in order to create a more positive impact on our downtown shoppers. But all business owners are encouraged to participate with improving the look to their storefronts with renovation improvements, flower pots and window decorations. Some of these improvements such as the new lights that illuminate Broadway and downtown area and benches found around the district, allow for visitors to rest their feet while shopping at our local businesses. Project Clean Sweep involves a group of volunteers who travel around our streets making sure that our sidewalks are clear of debris and clean.

YBID created a local spotlight on local Yorkton businesses with Executive Director Donna Brothwell highlighting each of these businesses with her YBID Chats. Posting over 30 interviews on social media for all to see. In January of 2021 YBID partnered with the City of Yorkton and developed BIIP or Business Improvement Incentive Program. This began as an online program initiated by the City with three parts. The Facade and Site Improvement Incentive, The Business Creation and Expansion Incentive and the Vacant Building and Tax Abatement Program. The Facade and Site Improvement Incentive is where YBID allocated $50,000 to each year for District businesses to apply for a 3 part 1/3 cost sharing. A maximum any one business can apply for is $30,000 which means 1/3 from the City of Yorkton, 1/3 from YBID and the remaining 1/3 to be paid by the business for the approved facade applications. Some of the Yorkton businesses that took part in the program were Golden Mobility, RCM Training & Consulting and Welcome Home Flowers & Gift Boutique.

One of Yorktons most improved areas is the City Centre Park. Growing up in Yorkton you should be able to remember the rows of bushes that lined the now brick layered street. This area now shows off a beautiful section of the downtown district where new park benches and tables are available for people to visit at. A huge concrete stage is postitioned in one corner of the area where entertainment can also be provided to visitors. At the center of of the Park stands the sundial donning the City Of Yorktons logo.

YBID provided park benches around the City for shoppers to stop and rest their feet and enjoy our downtown District at the same time.

The YBID community has been working hard to encourage everyone to SHOP YORKTON and 2021 was no exception for them. Shopping 20% more in local businesses brings millions to our local economy. This in turn keeps everyone employed able to support their families and help with supporting their community.

Visitors to Yorkton can stop and enjoy City Centre Park by relaxing on the park benches and watching local entertainment when available. Yorkton Business Improvement District celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2021 which also in 2011 they started the Clean Sweep Program. At that time they recognized a need to keep the District clean and safe for the businesses, community and the general shopping and beautification of the District. Some projects and programs over the years that have been provided to the Yorkton District are Clean Sweep, FlowerPots, Dracup Bridge, YBID Chats, Interviews of City Municipals, Yorkton Flour Mill Donation, Highway #9 & Broadway Beautification, Yorkton Film Festival, Celebrate Success Sponsorship, Sno A Rama Sponsorship, Seniors Mobility Car Sponsorship, benches and garbage/recycle dispensers, BIIP, Santa Claus Parade, Save The Grandstand Donation, City Centre Park Christmas Tree lighting, Let Yorkton Shine and Shop Yorkton Promotion.

2 hour Free parking is available on Broadway thanks to the YBID to encourage shopping in Yorkton.

Some ways the Yorkton Business Improvement District has Positive Impacts on Yorkton Business District: Property Values: Research of established BID’s indicates they have a positive impact on commercial property values, as compared to properties located outside of the district. In some cases as large as 15 percentage points. Public Safety: Increased public safety is a demonstrated impact of business improvement districts. YBID spends the most of its dollars on beautification and projects. Crime prevention shows a great decrease in crime which is a spill over of this benefit into areas outside of the YBID’s boundaries which is also evident. Government Relations: YBID fosters better relations between the private and the public sector due to the commitment of local businesses in financing enhancements of a community asset and our district. Leveraging Additional Funding: It has been proven that over time BID’s tend to leverage greater amount of both public and private dollars. BID’s can therefore implement a greater degree of improvements within a business district than could be expected without a BID. Community Volunteer Capacity: When supported by a municipal levy such as YBID, volunteers are relieved of fundraising activities, enabling the business community to focus its valuable volunteer staff time implementing projects, programs, events and actions to enhance the Business District.

Enhanced Quality Of Life: YBID by its nature enhances the quality of life for the entire community. Animation of the business district via public events and placemaking assists in resident and business attraction and retention. Economic Impacts: A rising tide lifts all boots! Maintaining a vibrant business district has a positive impact on all businesses in the community, regardless if they are within the boundaries of the YBID or not. The existence of a formal business improvement district speaks to the commitment of the community and its leaders to long-term ecomomic resilience. It supports the investment readiness of the community at large.

The Town Of Canora Comes Together For A New Pool

By Brook Thalgott Every summer in Saskatchewan isn’t complete without a dip in the pool. The town of Canora’s original outdoor pool opened in 1971, and by 2020 was in desperate need of repair or replacement. “Our pool was nearly 50 years old and at the end of its useful life,” says Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services for the Town of Canora. “After leaks, deterioration and building issues, it was time to work on how we fix our pool or develop a new pool facility for the town.” An engineering report was commissioned to look at the existing facility and it was determined that the current pool’s problems were too big for repair. The town council began examining options for a new pool facility and learned about a new eco-friendly pool system that could work. “We found a vendor that had an innovative system that would create structure that was easy to maintain and repair,” says Aaron. The town council assessed pitches for the project as well as design ideas to create a pool that would work for the town now and in the years to come.

“A size and design were chosen that suits both leisure swimmers and athletic users,” says Aaron. “The pool will be the same size as our original pool—82 feet, which is the junior Olympic size.” Four swimming lanes were added, along with beach entry and a toddler pool separated by a retaining wall. The pool will range from 3.5 feet to 11 feet deep, with a diving board at its deep end. There will also be a lazy river and splash features including a tipping bucket, geysers and a small slide bay. Last but certainly not least, there will be a 53-foot twin racer waterslide and a 130-foot twister slide. “The design is functional for so many users,” says Aaron. “Whether you’re bringing your young family to play on a summer day or swimming laps to stay fit, the facility offers something for everyone.”

Haul Your ATV/UTV Properly We recommend using a minimum of four straps for each UTV being hauled, with each strap rated for the full weight of your machine. If your vehicle weighs 1,400 pounds, then each strap should have a “working” load limit tag of 1,400 pounds or higher. The reason is, during sharp turns one tie-down will need to restrain the total force of your load at any one point of the turn and when braking.

BALANCE THE WEIGHT Position the machine on the trailer with the weight equally distributed over the trailer axle, or slightly forward. When properly loaded the trailer should have no less tongue weight than when empty. This is important as too little tongue weight causes the trailer to sway on the highway, and it can become uncontrollable.

STRAP LEVERAGE – 4 EQUAL POINTS To ensure your ATV or SxS won’t move or shift in transit, attach straps at a frame or structural member that is attached to the frame. Frame tubes, bumpers, and brush guards work excellent, but attach at a point where the hook or loop cannot slide, and take care not to pinch any wires or cables. We HIGHLY recommend a ratchet strap for this as you can put down pressure on the vehicles suspension, effectively making that work to keep the straps tight during transit. And don’t worry about the naysayers claiming it damages the suspension. Your shocks are made to support the vehicle weight, and unless you strap it down for months on end, there will be no problem.

WORKPLACE TENSION You trailer attachment point is ideally a loop welded to the trailer floor, or a D-ring bolted to the trailer deck, but if your trailer has neither of these, looping your strap over the side and immediately next to or around a structural member will work. Just be sure the strap cannot slide during transit, and will not be cut by any sharp edge. Check all straps again for even tension and you’re done! Finally, when you’ve double checked all straps, do not forget the all-important proclamation, “That’ll hold!”, thereby establishing your mastery of the procedure. Your machine is now properly secured and ready for travel.

HWY 310 North - Foam Lake, Sk.

(Note: If you’re using new tie-downs, re-tighten after a few miles—new straps sometimes stretch a bit the first time they are used.)

How Our Driving Ways Can Change ECT FOR

WHAT TO EXP

2022

Our driving habits and relationships with our cars have made many unexpected turns throughout the pandemic - from driving every day, to the closure of many public places, leading many of us to leave our cars in park for quite a while. Since then, we’ve seen driving increase, but we are still not driving as much as we used to. Despite these changes, the Hankook Tire Gauge Index found that drivers appear content with their current driving habits, with only about 1 in 4 (23%) saying they want to change how much they currently drive. However, here are some ways we can expect driving to change (or not!) in the new year.

Continuously Shifting Driving Patterns

that they prefer to not drive during rush hour. And while it may still be less often than they were two years ago, 44% expect they’ll continue commuting the same amount come 2022.

Driving Provides For A Bit Of A Break Whether working or learning from home, or spending the day in the office, drivers like to break up the day with a drive. Hankook found taking a drive continues to be a popular way to relax and visit with friends, and most people expect that the amount they drive for fun or leisure (53%) will stay the same in the new year. So, choose your favorite album and buckle up for a drive to nowhere in particular!

One thing is certain: people prefer to travel by car. Drivers are 36% more comfortable traveling long distances by car, versus planes, compared to this time last year. This is fueled by an increasing number of travelers switching from public transportation and ride share services to driving their own vehicle to avoid close contact with others during the pandemic. And while it’s impossible to know what 2022 will bring for the road ahead, it’s safe to say we can expect our driving patterns to continue shifting gears. Did you know ... people are happy to jump in the car to socialize, attend an event, or see someone special: 54% expect to attend more social events come 2022.

With the continuation of remote or hybrid work, and various other factors, most people (78%) are driving less than 200 miles per week. But things could shift as we head into 2022. Just over half of drivers (51%) expect to drive the same amount. Of those who do expect a change in their driving habits, it’s fairly split on whether they expect to drive more often (23%) or less (26%). (For what it’s worth, younger generations seem to think they’ll hit the road more frequently.)

The Daily Drive Remains Nearly two years of remote work hasn’t made anyone nostalgic for the morning FULL THROTTLE

Extend Your Driving Capabilities This Spring As winter warms into spring, there’s something else heating up: the travel plans of adventurers everywhere. Millions of Americans are preparing for their spring and summer journeys, but there’s one thing many are overlooking - a factor that will determine whether their trips are safe and successful. THE TIRES Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road, so they’re a pivotal part of every road trip. The right set of tires can even take drivers further than they’d otherwise be able to travel. Here’s how travelers can use their tires to extend their adventures. EXTEND YOUR TERRAIN Before fine-tuning final trip details, it is vital to make sure you’re riding on the right rubber. This time of year all-season tires will do the trick most places, but it’s important to note that they aren’t built for driving in winter conditions. If you’re headed way up north or into high elevations, it’s worth

considering all-weather tires like the Nokian Tyres WRG4 or the all-terrain Nokian Tyres Outpost, since they are certified for winter driving and provide a true four-season solution in areas with unpredictable weather. If you want to know whether a tire has the OK for winter driving, look for the threepeak mountain snowflake on the sidewall. That’s a certification indicating a tire has been tested in snow. If you live somewhere that experiences sustained winter conditions, it’s still best to drive a dedicated winter tire during that season, then switch to an all-season or all-weather tire in the spring and summer. EXTEND YOUR TOUGHNESS If you’re headed off the beaten path, you can extend your adventure with a set of tough all-terrain tires. Some tires are even reinforced with special fibers that help them resist potholes, ruts and rocks. That includes puncture-resistant Aramid fibers, the same material used in aerospace and bulletproof vests.

Nokian Tyres recommends finding a set of tires - like the Outpost - that is reinforced to help you avoid punctures and blowouts on your journey. If you’re going off-road, also consider an all-terrain tire with a high-tech tread pattern that helps you tackle the versatile conditions you’ll face. You’ll want deep tread, the ability to channel away water, and a tire that rides smoothly over gravel and bumps. EXTEND YOUR TRAVEL Did you know tires could help you save gas mileage? The less friction created between the tire and the road, the further you can travel on a tank of gas. Some tiremakers have doubled down on decreasing the rolling resistance of their products, which increases fuel-efficiency, helping put money back in drivers’ wallets ... which comes in especially handy when gas prices are high! Nokian Tyres crafts tires that have low rolling resistance, a feature that also lowers CO2 emissions created when your vehicle expends energy propelling itself along the road. And drivers of electric vehicles are big fans of the efficiency that results from low rolling resistance, since it extends the range they can travel on each charge. Before you hit the road this season, make sure your tires can extend your terrain, toughness and travel. To learn more about a new tire that accomplishes all three of those goals, visit NokianTires.com/Outpost.

DAY

A

wedding day is filled with symbolic tradition, from varied religious customs to the never-ending circle reflected in the rings and the types of flowers accentuating the celebration. Even with all the traditional rituals to consider, nearly every bride and groom can find ways to give their special day some unique touches that reflect their personality and love. Music sets the mood for every wedding, and it’s an easy place to put your own spin on the celebration. Whether you forgo the traditional bridal march entirely or simply look for an arrangement that gives an updated twist to the classic version, let guests know this isn’t your average wedding by setting the festivities against a soundtrack that lets your true character shine.

Photos lend a personal touch, no matter what your color scheme or theme. Integrate photos of the two of you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some you’re honoring in memoriam).

Maybe it’s a memento from a place with special meaning to you both, or a bottle opener shaped like a bicycle to represent the way you met.

You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music.

Just think about the moments and things that define you as a couple and do some searching online. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the options pile up.

Make favors meaningful. Forgo more common items like bubbles and chocolate, and

Serve up a menu that shows guests more about your life together. Your loved ones can order basic beef or chicken anywhere.

The wedding party is intended to be a collection of those nearest and dearest to the bride and groom, who help ensure the day goes off without a hitch and who lead fellow revelers in celebrating the start of the new couple’s life together. That being said, there’s no reason this group must be limited to women on her side and guys on his, or even that it’s limited to humans – a beloved pooch can make for an adorable ring-bearer, after all. Photography is an essential element of your big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. 44 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

On - Trend Home

A home design that blends multiple elements seamlessly can be both inviting and visually interesting. If you’re planning to upgrade your living space in 2022, consider incorporating materials like stone and brick, which bring color, texture and functionality while complementing some of this year’s leading design trends.

Texture can enhance the overall feeling of a space by offering depth and complexity that draws a visitor into the room. The use of texture in a design element, like stone or brick, can provide visual interest and engage the mind with a tactile response that encourages interaction with the environment.

Settling on a design aesthetic is the first step for most renovation projects, but it can be a challenge for many homeowners. If you’re in need of inspiration for a project on the horizon, consider these 2022 trends from the design experts at Glen-Gery:

Outdoor Inspiration Nature is inspiring an array of design elements this year. You may see this trend emerging through increased use of glass for light and views of nature, as well as continued focus on the versatile and transitional indoor-outdoor spaces that gained momentum during the height of the pandemic. Approaches may vary depending on the homeowner’s style and climate, but examples include larger patios in brick and stone, as well as more functional private patios and porches.

Warm Colors Look for a shift toward warmer colors like beige, tan, caramel, cocoa and even black. Designers are moving from cool grays to a warmer coffee-inspired palette. The use of warmer colors on structural elements of a home, like brick, stone, siding, doors and shutters, offer visual warmth while making a statement. Textures and Patterns Textures and patterns are popping up in many on-trend designs.

Another aspect of this trend is the tendency for homeowners to integrate indoor conveniences such as kitchens, fireplaces, furniture and electronics into their outdoor spaces.

BRIGHT! Radiant Yellow This Spring/Summer 2022 trend perfectly highlights showing off how bright you can be with a sunny yellow. Yellow is totally in. In 2021, a buttery, pale yellow was the option to opt for over cream, but in 2022 it is all about being classic, with an almost-neon sunshine hue. However, you choose to wear it, this color is guaranteed to brighten your mood and everyone around you.

Hot Orange Forget the creamsicle hues—Spring/Summer 2022 is all about choosing the brightest orange you can find, and yes can be caught wearing it from head to toe. Thorsness Appliance Can Make Your Kitchen Shine!

Yorkton’s Thorsness Appliance is an institution in the Parkland area, with roots that begin over 75 years ago. The long-time company got its start as Thorsness Hardware in 1945, proudly owned by Obert Thorsness and sons Wilf and Keith. The original company had locations in Saltcoats, Bredenbury, Churchbridge and Langenburg, and opened its Yorkton store in 1988. In 1972, the first McIntyre would join the business—current owner Mike McIntyre’s father Tom. In 1975, Dave McIntyre, Tom’s brother came on board. Mike McIntyre would join his dad at the Yorkton store in 1992 and in 1996 Tom and Dave would officially take it over from the Thorsness family who retired. Mike and his wife Krissa are now the second generation of McIntyres to own the store, with Krissa joining her husband after a 20-year career at Dr. Ken Cottenie’s dental practice. “We kept the Thorsness name because of the solid reputation that was built over the decades,” says owner Mike McIntyre. “Thorsness is a name you can trust and we’re proud to carry it on.” Today, Thorsness Appliance is Yorkton’s go-to store for everything in kitchen and laundry appliances. Proudly offering the brand names you know and trust, such as Maytag, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool, the company knows what they sell and how to service it.

“Not only do we sell appliances, but we also handle warranties and service them too,” says Mike. “We also manage deliveries and removals of your old appliances.” Thorness Appliance is also competitive with the big box chains and city stores but provide that small-town service that only a family-owned business can. “Our buying group ensures we can compete with larger companies,” says Mike. “Plus, we’re local. You can walk into our store today and take home the appliance you need without the trip into the city. We can save you time and gas money.” The store features a 5,000 square-foot showroom with the best and latest in appliances, including refrigerators, ranges, freezers, dishwashers, microwaves, range hoods, washers, dryers and more. You can get the advice on what you need for your space and lifestyle, and what you’re looking for is usually found on-site in their 8,000 square-foot warehouse. “We carry a great selection of inventory, and we can always order in whatever you need if we don’t have it,” says Mike. of the release of The Demos in February, and her current Top 40 track ‘Nothin’ I Don’t Love About You’ continues to rise at Canadian Country radio.

Realizing that Jess seemed to enjoy singing, her parents bought her a karaoke machine when she was fourteen and converted one of the home bedrooms into a “singing room” where she could practice.

In addition to her music, Moskaluke continues to explore other avenues including her highly anticipated ‘Handpicked by Jess’ subscription box drops, with previous versions selling out in less than 24 hours. (Provided by MDM Recordings) During her school years Jess was involved in sports, drama, and band. She played in volleyball, basketball, figure skating and was also involved in gymnastics. Although she was a member in the school band program, she learned to play the piano and also taught herself how to play the guitar.

The first Canadian female country artist since Shania Twain to achieve CRIA Platinum single status with the hit ‘Cheap Wine and Cigarettes’. Moskaluke has since gone on to earn CRIA Gold certifications for ‘Take Me Home’, ‘Kiss Me Quiet’ and a nod for her feature on Paul Brandt’s ‘I’m An Open Road’. She was also notably the first Canadian female country artist since 2008 to have a song in the Top 3 with ‘Drive Me Away’, and has notched another SIX Top 10 hits in addition to that including her first ever NUMBER ONE ’Country Girls’. The 2017 JUNO Award winner for ‘Country Album of the Year’, Moskaluke is also the 2018 CCMA Award winner for ‘Album of the Year’. A three-time consecutive CCMA ‘Female Artist of the Year’ Award winner – the first resident of Saskatchewan in the history of the awards to achieve this title – a 2017 SOCAN Award winner and recently took home the 2020 WCM Award for ‘Country Artist of the Year’.

Jess’s first concert she attended was when she was a pre-teen at a Paul Brandt concert, with which she attended with her mother. Later on in her musical career she was truly fortunate to be able to tour with Paul and as well record the song “I’m An Open Road” with him and perform at various locations with Paul. Jess’s career did not just start with music, like any teen she held down various jobs in her local town of Langenburg where she would work after school and weekends. You could find her at the Creekside and Chicken Chef Restaurants and at the Langenburg Pool where she was a lifeguard and manager. Jess also worked towards becoming a Certified Nail Technician and to this day she still looks after clients. As a young child, Jess always had an interest in singing, her parents took notice of it when they were attending Jess’s Nursery School Concert, all the children were cute singing in their own screaming sort of way, but noticed Jess took more to singing than screaming.

“In honour of Jess’s father, Tim who passed away at an early age of 40 to MS. ReFined Yorkton Magazine would like to dedicate this issue in Memory of Tim Moskaluke.”

Kicking off 2020 with ‘Country Girls’ topping the charts, Moskaluke’s follow-up track ‘Halfway Home’ landed in the Top 5 at Australian country radio. In 2019, she played the C2C Music Festival and took part in CMC’s ‘Songs and Stories’ series, performing six songs for a one-hour special. She delivered her Top 15 single ‘Mapdot’, a personal ode to small-town pride and the place she’s proud to call home, ahead FEATURED EDITOIAL

After her first time singing a solo song in front of an audience at the Langenburg Christmas Carol Festival, one lady was impressed with her singing and suggested putting Jess into vocal lessons. With some local lessons Jess decided she required some training not only in her vocals but with having a stage presence and performing. With that they found Doug Riley from Yorkton, Sk. to provide her with lessons for a couple of years. Over the years Jess performed in local competitions, weddings, ceremonies, fundraisers, and events. Her proudest moment was when she sang for a Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser in memory of her father Tim. When Jess went to university in Brandon, Manitoba to take criminal justice, she was approached by Identical Entertainment in Nashville for an Artist Development/ Publishing Deal. She was now left with a difficult decision of continuing her education in school or fly to Nashville to begin her musical career. Obviously, we all know what her decision was to get her to her music career status today. While in the United States she met a couple of YouTube artists, Tyler Ward, and Jake Coco. She performed with both artists recording and videotaping many songs that were released on YouTube. One of Jess’s music idols is Shania Twain, ever since she was a little girl. Shania has been a major influence on Jess, and she was able to perform one of Shania’s songs at the CCMA’s with other artists. 60 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

The song “Cheap Wine and Cigarettes” was the song that highlighted and allowed Jess’s career to take off and put her on the musical map. Jess is a very humble person and keeps all her awards at her mom’s home in Langenburg (Except her Juno Award). Jess’s home is meant to reflect who Jessica Becker’s home and life is, not Jess Moskoluke. Jess resides in Rocanville, Saskatchewan along with her husband Clay Becker. Many would think that seeing someone as talented and acclaimed as Jess would lavish themselves with a huge mansion and fancy cars living in a big city, but to Jess, home is where her heart will always remain. Giving her talent and music to her fans.

A big thank you to Jess’s mom Rhonda for providing ReFined Yorkton Magazine with all of the photos and scrapbooks to look through and use for this editorial.

Enjoy The Great Outdoors.......

Safely!

We want to make sure you stay safe while experiencing the great outdoors. Young, old, novice or experienced campers, here are a few summer camping tips will help ensure you get the most out of your trip and stay safe this summer.

Find a shady place to rest if you are getting too hot. Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion; excessive thirst, nausea, fainting, cool and clammy skin, weakness, muscle aches, heavy sweating, slow heartbeat and dizziness.

Water Safety Many water-related accidents are preventable. Always wear a properly sized and fitted life jacket when boating; know your abilities as a swimmer and don’t venture beyond your comfort level; use the buddy system; be aware of currents and learn what to do if caught in one; and always supervise children, even in very shallow water.

Avoiding Bears and Other Wildlife Food attracts a variety of critters, so raccoons, skunks and even bears could make an appearance during your trip. Never store scented products or food in your tent; instead, lock it in your car, put it in a separate tent or string it up in a tree if you are camping in the bush. Don’t leave garbage out in the open,

Protect Yourself from the Sun With summer comes hot, hot heat! Sunburns can be incredibly painful and very serious. Don’t forget to wear hats, sunglasses and apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply often; make sure to use waterproof sunscreen if you plan to go in the water, but remember it only lasts about 90 minutes when in water.

Transporting Food Keeping perishable foods at the appropriate temperature is vital to avoiding illness. Eat fresh foods first and pack them in a cooler using plenty of ice to keep food from spoiling. Build Campfires Responsibly Check the official campground website beforehand to determine fire regulations. Use a fire pit if one is available, never leave the fire unattended and remember to fully extinguish it when you are done. If a fire pit is not available, create one well away from tent walls, plants, trees and other flammable objects. Getting Lost - and Found! Always tell someone where you are going. Have a set plan with a pre-determined meeting place if you get separated. Packing a whistle, cell phone and compass or GPS are always a good idea. Know what to do when you get lost and you’ll always be found. Adventuresmart.ca is a great resource for information on how to stay safe outdoors. Whether you’re a first-time camper or experienced explorer, we want you to make this summer the best one yet. And remember to leave no trace that you were ever there so that the natural world will be there to appreciate for many years to come.

Keep Cool and Stay Hydrated With summer heat, it’s also extremely important to keep cool and hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion or stroke. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and pack extra water bottles in a cooler with lots of ice to keep them cold. 62 REFINED YORKTON & AREA

ining a t r e t n Safe E A Tips In rld o W 9 1 COVID Encourage guests to bring their own. It may go against all your good

Depending on where you live, restrictions on social gatherings may become less strict in the coming weeks and months. However, many experts caution that care should still be exercised when groups of people gather. After an extended period without social contact, it’s only natural to crave some interaction, and there’s evidence that doing so can be advantageous for your mental health. However, taking precautions to protect your physical health, along with your guests’, can make for a more enjoyable event. Keep it contained. Limit your gatherings to a few close friends or family members so if someone does get sick, contact tracing is a simple task.

Keep in mind the number of same-household families you invite is more important than the number of people in that family. For example, one family of six that has already been living in close quarters poses a lower risk than three couples living in separate houses. Also be mindful of your guests’ approach to prevention; if they’ve been less cautious than your family or vice versa, there’s room for conflict and anxiety. Celebrate outdoors. Indoor event spaces naturally have less circulation, meaning potential airborne particles hang around longer. Planning your gathering outdoors helps ensure more free-moving fresh air and more space for guests to spread out and practice social distancing.

hosting inclinations but hosting a bringyour-own party eliminates shared food and the risk of cross-contamination. You can provide disposable table service (plates, silverware and napkins) and single-serve beverages, but skip the cooler everyone reaches into.

Provide ample, well-spaced seating. Encourage guests to keep some distance from one another by creating comfy seating arrangements. You can take it a step farther by asking guests to bring their own chairs and directing each family to set up its space a reasonable distance from the next. Make cleanliness a priority. Create stations with hand sanitizer or wipes. You can also create a makeshift sink to minimize trips to the restroom indoors. Provide a spray bottle or bucket, soap and paper towels near the hose for quick clean-ups.

Kade Johnson Kade grew up in Yorkton and like many kids in the area, played hockey. Joining this sport helped instill his many skills that helped him with his career in golf today. He was involved in hockey for almost twelve years, eventually he turned his focus towards becoming a golfer. His main golf course of choice was Deer Park Golf Course where he met many supportive people who helped in in every way to become a better golfer.

Kade’s start in golf began when his grandfather took him out to Cherrydale Golf Course to teach him about golfing, he was taught by his grandfather about the game and how to respect the course and other players on it. His grandfather would tell him stories of how members appreciated how he was introducing someone so young to the sport. Kade started out in the Junior Program at Deer Park where he would receive instruction from head professional Allan Sauser, and he even was able to play in his very first event at the age of eleven. A year later Kade was assigned to a full-time coach. This involved driving to Saskatoon to work with his coach Brad Birnie. Over the years Brad evolved into more than a great coach and mentor to Kade, but even a friend where the two of them to this day enjoy their time together on the course.

Local Hometown Kid Turns Golf Professional He found quick success in golf which was able to provide him with many incredible experiences through his junior career. He made trips across North America and was able to travel overseas to Scotland and Australia to play on their courses. His solid career as a junior transferred his career into a more successful one becoming an amateur golfer where he was able to become the winner of the Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur in 2018. He credits his success to his late grandfather John Pacholka who saw Kade’s love for the game and was proud to have introduced him to it. Kade moved to the USA after graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton and began attending university at Southern Arkansas. He graduated after five years with a Bachelor of Business (finance) and a

Master’s in Business Administration. During his time in university, he became a member of the SAU Golf Team the Muleriders. The team competed in the NCAA Division 2 Great American Conference, and during his time with the team they were able to break eighteen program records while reaching a top twenty ranking in the country. On top of that he individually set thirteen program records earning him Player of the Year title for the Great American Conference in 2021. Kade’s first season as a professional brought him immediate

success. He began his career on PGA Tour Canada playing two events in Prince Edward Island where he was able to get two top ten finishes. Kade spends his winter seasons down in Phoenix, Arizona where he continues to work on his game and getting ready for upcoming seasons. Mini tours such as the Outlaw Tour and Golden State are beneficial in providing him with tournament reps before he competes in the PGA Tour Canada. He is not sure of where his career will take him, but he is excited to be gifted the opportunity to gain experience and grow every day to ultimately achieve his dream of playing on the PGA Tour.

HOW TO GRILL STRIP STEAK ON A GAS GRILL

Ingredients FOR STEAKS: 6 1-inch thick New York Strip Steaks bone-in or boneless 1 recipe steak marinade FOR OILING GRILL: 1/4 cup vegetable oil Instructions MARINATE STEAK: Trim the steak of any large pieces of fat. Doing so will cause fewer flareups and burnt edges. Add steak to resealable Ziploc bag. Pour marinade over the steaks, seal the bag, and shake the bag to distribute the marinade evenly. Refrigerate for 1-4 hours before grilling. PREP STEAK AND GRILL: Take the steak out of the refrigerator and let them sit for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the gas grill to medium-high heat and cover. Before putting the steaks on the grill, scrape the grates (preferably with a bristle-less grill brush). Then, soak two pieces of paper towel with vegetable oil. Oil the grill grates with a paper towel. GRILL STEAKS: Place steak on the grill and cover. For 1-inch steaks, grill for 5 minutes on the first side, then flip and grill for 3-7 minutes on the second side depending on your desired doneness. Use an instant-read thermometer to tell when steaks are done. You want an internal temperature of 120-130 degrees for rare, 130-140 degrees for medium-rare, 140-150 degrees for medium, and 160-170 degrees for well-done. REST STEAKS AND SERVE: Take steaks off the grill and tent with foil for 10 minutes. FROM Serve immediately. 72 REFINED YORKTON & AREA
