When the World Comes Crashing Down
By Reem Mansy
When the World Comes Crashing Down
When all of a sudden there is an act of hate, Politicians take it as a time to berate.
When the whole world comes crashing down,
It is taken as a time to put on a false crown.
It is taken as a time to blame Muslim Migration, Claiming no, “Muslim is the final solution.”
It is taken as a time to brainwash the ignorant, Creating a hate wave like that of a tyrant.
Yet they never saw the innocent faces of the children who died. And they never saw the tears fall from their mothers’ eyes.
Yet they never heard the last words of the first victim, “Hello Brother,” depicting the virtue of a true Muslim.
“I should not be standing in front of you, I should be lying beside you.”
The muttering of a boy in a wheelchair, Beside his father and brother’s grave knowing life is unfair.
They never met the woman who used herself as a human shield, And from her wounds she never healed.
They never felt the pain of the boy who lost his youth director, brother, and best friend. A pain that seems to never end.
They never gained the courage to stop a gunman, Unlike the multiple victims who others claim as unhuman.
None of this would change their minds
Because they can see, yet they are blind.
And their hearts will never feel, Because for love, there is an impermeable seal.
• This poem was written after the mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand. 50 Muslims were murdered and politicians began blaming Muslim Migration for the mass shooting.

Climbing Back to the Mountain Top
By Reem Mansy
Why treat each other differently, While we can treat each other equally?
Why base someone by the color of their skin,
And why jump to a negative conclusion?
Why should I be labeled differently than you, Although I am human, too?
We are all born equal on this Earth, And we have been human since our birth.
We may not all have the same face, But we are all part of the human race.
We should all commit to an endeavor, Which is to all work together.
We should all strive for tyranny to cease, Because equality is the key to peace.
No more people should be shot, And no more lives should be lost.
Let us waste no more energy, And let us fulfil this dream with synergy.
We must all accept one another, And we should all guide each other.
Let us not judge, And let us hold no grudge.
Let us allow compassion to sink in, And let us remember that we are all kin.
I have only one desire, It is for equality to be acquired.
Let us not discriminate, Because that is an act we must eliminate.
Let us remember those who came before us, Especially those who were just.
Let us remember Martin Luther King. He called out “let freedom ring!”
Let our journey for equality not stop, As we make our way back to the mountain top.
• This poem was written for and presented at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The theme of the night was Climbing Back to the Mountain Top. Presented January 15, 2018.
