THE

ARTISTIC JOURNEY BEHIND EVARO ITALIA, EXPLORING THE Vision, Craftsmanship, & Heritage THAT DEFINE AN ICONIC ITALIAN FASHION HOUSE

INTRODUCTION

Can you tell us about your journey from growing up in Florence to becoming an internationally recognized fashion designer? What were some key influences along the way?

I’ve been immersed in fashion my entire life. My family was in the leather business, with several stores in Florence, so I helped out after school and attended fashion events from a young age. I learned the basics of the business from my father, as often happens in generational businesses, and I loved seeing the pride he put into his work. Later, I spent time as a runway model in Milan, Paris, and New York, and that’s when I fell in love with haute couture.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

For inspiration, I have always looked to the arts and have been deeply moved by Italian history, architecture, and painting, especially from the pre-Renaissance through Mannerism. So, as much as I— and Evaro Italia—are rooted in a sense of classic Italian style, I see my artistic exploration as part of that broader history. As we have evolved the brand into an international fashion house, for me, it’s about bringing that sense of Italian tradition and elegance into something fresh that speaks to women around the world today.

Your designs reflect a deep appreciation for Italian craftsmanship and family tradition. How do these elements shape your creative vision and process?

I take immense pride in my heritage and am committed to designing luxury pieces that embody the tradition and values of Made in Italy craftsmanship. This is about much more than skill—it’s a mindset, a devotion to quality and detail that has been part of Italian culture for generations. My designs are rooted in this tradition. I personally source each material, design every piece, and carefully attend to the details of construction and presentation to ensure that each garment reflects the care, quality, and

distinct style that is uniquely Evaro Italia. For me, fashion is an art form, and true luxury is about quality and uniqueness—pieces that are wellmade, distinctive, and meaningful to the wearer.

How do you balance the rich history of Italian fashion with contemporary trends in your collections?

Put simply, I don’t follow trends. My focus is on crafting timeless pieces that can become cherished heirlooms. Italian fashion has a magnificent history that inspires me, but it’s not static. Balancing tradition with contemporary needs is a delicate act that Italian artisans have refined and mastered over centuries. My role is to evolve tradition without ever losing sight of it, blending heritage with innovative design. The goal is to create elegance that endures—pieces that speak to women now and for generations to come.

FALL/WINTER 2024 COLLECTION

What themes and inspirations influenced your Fall/Winter 2024 collection? Are there any specific experiences or emotions that guided your design choices?

This season’s collection is titled Incandescenze and draws inspiration from the opulence of the Florentine Medici palaces, especially their richly adorned chambers and luxurious tapestries in royal reds. Exploring these palaces fueled my creativity, and their intricate details hold stories of power, romance, and a sense of old-world luxury that I wanted to bring into each piece. The collection features visually stunning fabrics that evoke love and passion, marked by bold red leathers, silks, and reflective materials. It’s about capturing that intensity and translating it into pieces that radiate the same elegance and richness of Florence’s past.

Can you highlight some key

pieces from this collection? What makes them stand out?

One standout piece is the Beatrice Sequin Gown, which perfectly encapsulates my brand's aesthetic — simple yet modern, understated yet elegant. It’s made from light-absorbing black velvet embellished with thousands of sequins. It shimmers beautifully on the red carpet and has quickly become a favorite this season.

There are also some statement pieces in ruby red leather that are bold and fun. The Rosanna Leather Mini Dress is crafted from ultra-soft Italian leather and blends modern elegance with classic chic. I also love the Valentina Leather Jacket and Shorts; they have a subtly relaxed fit that’s flirty and fun, perfect for a young fashionista on the go. Each piece has been designed to make a statement and leave a lasting impression.

In what ways does this collection reflect your signature style and the ethos of Evaro Italia?

Like everything we do, each garment in the collection is handmade in our Florence atelier using traditional craftsmanship and couture techniques. I’ve always valued luxury as something rare and meaningful, and each piece in the collection is designed to embody the spirit of Couture-à-Porter — a blend of haute couture refinement with the versatility of prêt-à-porter. This season’s collection reflects our commitment to elegance, femininity, and capturing the enduring beauty and intensity of Florence itself.

EVENT INSIGHTS

Your upcoming showcase events on the West Coast promise an exclusive preview of both the Fall/Winter 2024 and Resort 2025 collections. What are you most excited for attendees to experience during these events?

FASHION

IS AN ART FORM, AND TRUE LUXURY IS ABOUT MORE THAN AESTHETICS—IT’S ABOUT QUALITY, UNIQUENESS, AND THE MEANING BEHIND EACH PIECE. EVERY GARMENT TELLS A STORY, CRAFTED WITH CARE AND ROOTED IN ITALIAN TRADITION.

We are always excited for our guests to experience Evaro Italia in a truly immersive way. The Palace Hotel is a beautiful venue and one of the historic icons of San Francisco, and I’m especially excited to preview our Resort 2025 collection for the first time in the U.S. Guests will enjoy an intimate display of Italian fashion in the hotel’s stunning French Parlor, accompanied by live Italian music. We want our guests to celebrate and connect with Italian fashion on a personal level, and events like this are an opportunity to transport guests with us to Italy, if only for an afternoon.

How do you envision the private fittings and trunk show enhancing the connection between your designs and the guests?

Our shows offer a rare chance for guests to really engage with the garments — they can feel the textures, see the craftsmanship up close, and try on pieces with guidance from our stylists. This allows us to work closely with each guest to achieve the perfect fit, creating pieces that feel uniquely theirs. I want attendees to leave feeling like they’ve been part of something unique and beautiful. And this isn’t just about fashion — it’s an opportunity to share and experience Italian culture, a glimpse of Italy right here in San Francisco.

ARTISTIC INFLUENCE

Your background in painting has clearly influenced your fashion designs. How do you integrate artistic concepts into your collections?

During my artistic education, I was never the typical painter. I liked the process more than the finished painting — all of the different intertwined steps that begin with an idea and culminate in a final piece. When I paint, I start with a concept, then move to sketches, and work with drawings, layering in collage to build texture. Only the final steps are fully dedicated to painting. My fashion design follows a similar process. Usually, I start with an inspiration; something from nature or a beautiful place I’ve visited — for the Resort 2025 collection, it was the Island of Elba in Tuscany, and the idea was to capture its light and breathtaking beauty. Then I dive into each of the different steps, from selecting materials to sketching and construction. I love how textures, colors, and forms come together to build a collection that embodies the concept. I’ve always had a fascination with the tension between the old and the new, tradition and technology, and how each collection can express this balance of identity and aspiration.

Can you discuss how your work critiques contemporary perceptions of identity through the lens of fashion?

I love how clothing reflects both who we are and who we aspire to be. There’s a power in pieces that make you feel a certain way when you wear them — confident, elegant, or daring. I’m trying to create garments that allow women to express a strong, timeless identity while also giving space for play, and that are versatile enough to allow for transformation. An important dimension of the Evaro brand is that we always have lots of separates, creating garments that can seamlessly transition from day into night. This is especially important since we also live in what feels like an increasingly artificial and technological world, where so much of our sense of identity is tied up in

digital, online, “augmented” reality. I like that our designs offer something that’s truly real, grounded in Italian tradition and craftsmanship — pieces that women can feel very comfortable in and that honor their individuality in a tangible way.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL PRACTICES

In light of the fashion industry’s impact on the environment, how do you approach sustainability in your designs and production processes?

The EVARO ITALIA STORY

Remo Rorandelli begin manufacturing leather goods in Florence in 1943, growing the business to several storefronts in Florence and Venice by the 1960s with the help of his son Massimo. Thus began a family tradition of Italian style, originality and lasting quality. Defined by artisanal craftsmanship and timeless sophistication, Remo’s leather shoes and accessories were designed and created in Florence for decades using richly textured leathers and attention to detail in every piece. Beginning in the 1980s, as Made in Italy fashion flourished internationally, Massimo pushed the business in new directions, designing and distributing modern and sophisticated leather outerwear.

Unmatched Craftsmanship, Italian Style and Generations of Expertise

Fashion designer Eva Rorandelli grew up helping her father Massimo in his stores in the historic San Lorenzo shopping district in Florence, surrounded by Renaissance art and architecture. She later studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence before moving to New York City to pursue a career in modeling, and eventually, fashion design. Since her father’s passing in 2007 Eva has built on his legacy of classic Italian style, establishing Evaro as an internationally known luxury fashion house recognized for its timeless elegance and refined craftsmanship. www.evaro.it

We prioritize sustainability and ethical practices throughout our entire production process, crafting each piece in-house with a dedicated team of local artisans and sourcing materials as locally as possible in Italy. Many of our luxurious materials are archival and re-utilized in our seasonal collections to give them new life. Our approach is to create smaller, carefully crafted collections that are meant to be treasured for generations, not discarded after a single season, and to build on a heritage of craftsmanship and practices that have always been focused on quality, longevity, and respect for resources.

PERSONAL TOUCH

As a designer, what part of the design process brings you the most joy? Is there a moment during creation that you find particularly fulfilling?

I find the most joy in sketching and imagining the story behind an entire collection. I think about where the Evaro Italia woman comes from and where she’s headed next. It’s this process of envisioning her journey that makes each collection feel alive and meaningful to me.

What challenges have you faced while developing your collections, and how have you overcome them?

The primary challenge lies in balancing the demands of an international business while preserving traditional quality and values. Over the last decade, we’ve successfully expanded our brand into ready-to-wear and couture lines — Evaro Italia and Evaro Alta Moda — while also producing accessories, jewelry, and perfume, all designed and made in Italy. This growth has added a lot of complexity to how we operate, but we’ve managed to keep things contained by focusing on high-quality products in limited editions and planning ahead so we introduce just one or two new

products seasonally with each new clothing collection.

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS

What are your hopes for Evaro Italia in the coming years? Are there any new projects or collaborations on the horizon that you’re excited about?

I look forward to continuing to collaborate with my Evaro team, which has become an extended international family, as we prepare for an exciting year ahead with new collection launches each Spring and Fall. We are a luxury Italian fashion house committed to growing internationally, and we have lots of new and exciting product ideas and upcoming shows, so I’m thrilled to see how we’ll evolve creatively.

How do you see your work evolving as you continue to explore themes of identity and reality in your designs?

Fashion is a mirror of culture, and as the world rapidly evolves, my challenge is to deeply understand these shifts while staying true to our Italian heritage and focusing on the creation of timeless beauty.

CONCLUSION

Lastly, what message do you want to convey to those who admire your work and are eager to experience your collections at your upcoming events?

I hope everyone attending our events will enjoy the collection as much as I loved designing it! This season’s collection reflects our dedication to beauty, quality, and a respect for tradition, and we have many exceptional new products that have just arrived from Florence for our events this Fall. My wish is that each guest finds something in our pieces that resonates with them personally — a sense of elegance, strength, and individuality that they can carry with them. We are so excited to share this journey with you, and I can’t wait for you to experience Evaro Italia firsthand.

FOUNDER AND CEO OF THREEEQ

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Can you share your journey that led you to found ThreeEQ? What inspired you to focus on mentoring next-generation leaders?

Eighteen years ago in 2006, I witnessed countless young people struggling to find their path. As a father, globetrotter, and education technology CEO then, I knew there had to be a better way to unlock potential, achieve great results, and reduce the stress and anxiety high achievers faced. My own young daughters were anxious about their futures, like many others, and I realized I could make a meaningful impact.

AN EXCLUSIVE WITHINTERVIEW MaJason

To address the shortage of effective next-gen leaders worldwide, I merged my Asia-based edtech SaaS startup with a top-notch U.S. provider of elite college planning and application services with a chain of learning centers. I brought in a stellar team of investors and advisors, including a former Stanford Provost, several Stanford professors, a UC Berkeley professor, and Eric Yuan, who later founded Zoom. Together, we built an elite education and college prep company that served over a thousand affluent families annually. Though the work was impactful and rewarding, the demands were intense (including working full-time Saturdays and Sundays), and after six years, I left to create something personally more meaningful.

I founded ThreeEQ, a family business focused on serving select high-end client families with personalized, strategic mentorship. Today, ThreeEQ stands as a trusted third-party advisor in Ivy League/ elite college and grad school admissions, next-level career, executive, and personal success coaching, and UHNW family legacy enhancement, helping select wealthy private client families, individuals, and companies achieve great outcomes with well-being. Our success stories and heartfelt testimonials from students, parents, CEOs, and other VIPs drive my mission to transform lives by helping young people unleash their full potential, prepare superbly, and achieve terrific results with well-being.

With extensive experience across various sectors, how has this diverse background influenced your approach to mentorship?

After graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from UC Berkeley College of Engineering, I have accumulated 40 years of experience in engineering, building, rainmaking, mentoring, and investing across technology, education, finance, media, and other sectors, and have logged over 2 million miles of world travel. I was also a Forbes Global CEO Conference delegate by invitation for 8 years. Today, I’m globally connected at high levels with keen acumen in geopolitics, business, and coaching. I bring a blend of strategic insight, emotional/ social/leadership intelligence, and personalization to mentorship.

This multi-industry experience shapes ThreeEQ’s holistic, hightouch approach, equipping young leaders—from high school and college students to working Next Gens— to prepare superbly well and achieve great outcomes in the most important goals in their life stages. These outcomes range from Ivy League/ elite college admissions to next-level career/business/personal success, as well as elevated long-term success and well-being arcs.

As the acclaimed author of Young Leaders 3.0, what key message do you hope readers take away regarding the achievements of young leaders?

In my critically acclaimed book, Young Leaders 3.0: Stories, Insights, and Tips for Next-Generation Achievers, you and your Next Gens are about to embark on an exciting ride following the transformative journeys of a diverse group of 23 exemplary Gen Z and millennial leaders. These handpicked 17-to-24year-old contributors were young alumni and current students from all eight Ivy League universities (Brown,

Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn/Wharton, Princeton, and Yale), Babson, Bowdoin, Colgate, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, MIT, Northwestern, Oxford, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, and USC. Over half were my students/mentees. These stories provide an inside look into their personal successes, failures, and lessons learned, and offer strategies that young leaders can apply in their lives.

The book showcases the journeys of young achievers who have unlocked their potential through resilience, character, compassion, and a dedication to meaningful impact. It emphasizes that authentic success combines talent with values, purpose, and a drive to positively influence others. This aligns with my mentorship philosophy at ThreeEQ, where we build not only successful leaders but also leaders with integrity and empathy.

How has your role as a Forbes contributor shaped your views on mentoring and leadership?

Writing for Forbes with a focus on Mentoring Young Leaders allowed me to reach a broad audience with insights and tips on Ivy League and Elite College Prep and Admissions, Higher and Unconventional Education, Next-Gen Leadership, and Mentorship. A number of my articles went viral, receiving hundreds of thousands of views each. It reinforced the importance of mentorship that integrates emotional, social, and leadership intelligence, strategic foresight, empowered mindsets, and real-world soft skills—principles foundational to my approach at ThreeEQ, where we prepare Next Gen leaders for greatness with longterm success and well-being.

Could you elaborate on your work with the B20 and its significance in shaping policies for the future of work and education?

The B20 is the G20’s official dialogue forum with the global business community. As a leading member through ten G20 Presidencies—Australia, Turkey, China, Germany, Argentina, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, India, and Brazil (2024)—I actively contribute to private sector policy recommendations and advocacy. These recommenda-

tions help shape the strategic direction set by G20 Leaders (Presidents and Prime Ministers) and their governments, influencing global economic growth and development for billions of people and businesses worldwide.

I am one of a select few Americans appointed annually as a B20 member since 2014 With insights from global Silicon Valley, four decades of industry experience, and over 2 million miles of travel, I’ve contributed to B20’s Future of Work, Employment, Human Capital, Skills, and Education Task Force, and am also an influential voice on AI & Digital and Trade & Investment. Each B20/ G20 host country names their task forces accordingly. This experience reinforces my commitment to preparing young leaders who can navigate and positively impact a connected, complex world with integrity, wisdom, compassion, and skills.

FAMILY VALUES

The Ma family values are centered around unconditional love, humor, and high standards. How do these values manifest in your family life and your professional endeavors?

The Ma family (playfully, the “MAfia”)’s core values—unconditional love, humor, and high standards—are the foundation of both my family life and my work at ThreeEQ. At home, they foster trust, resilience, and joy. In my professional life, they shape our mentorship philosophy, ensuring young leaders strive for excellence in achieving goals while honoring values and character.

Can you share how your daughters, Sabrina and Lydia, inspire you in your work at ThreeEQ and your mentorship efforts?

Sabrina and Lydia, both now Gen Z working professionals, embody the qualities I aim to cultivate in Next Gen leaders: spirit, resilience, adaptability, determination, compassion, integrity, and ambition. Currently, Sabrina is a top-performing senior software engineer in her sixth year at Google, and Lydia is a software engineer at Stripe after being a top-performing engineer at Salesforce Slack for two years. Both are recognized as inspiring, rising young

YOUNG LEADERS 3.0: STORIES, INSIGHTS, AND TIPS FOR NEXTGENERATION ACHIEVERS

The book features 23 exemplary 17-to-24-year-old (Gen Z and Millennial) achievers, over half of whom were Jason’s students/ mentees from prestigious universities, including the Ivy League schools (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale), Babson, Bowdoin, Colgate, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, MIT, Northwestern, Oxford, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, and USC.

Young Leaders 3.0 takes a human and multifaceted approach to these young leaders’ achievements and growth, going beyond traditional markers of success like GPAs, standardized test scores, and resumes. It provides an inside look at personal successes and failures, along with valuable lessons learned and proven strategies for young people to get ahead in life with well-being.

Acclaimed author Jason Ma’s groundbreaking book, Young Leaders 3.0: Stories, Insights, and Tips for Next-Generation Achievers, has inspired many.

leaders. Lydia took a path less traveled after graduating summa cum laude and also an activity leader (e.g., co-president of the Wharton Undergraduate Fintech Group) from Penn Wharton—not finance (IB/VC/PE/HF) but engineering in tech companies. Their journeys remind me daily of the transformative potential within each young person and inspire my commitment to helping others unlock and prepare for greatness while honoring their values.

What role do family values play in the principles that guide ThreeEQ?

Family values are central to ThreeEQ’s mission. We nurture traits mentioned above, guiding young leaders to prepare superbly and achieve personal and professional success while contributing and enhancing relationships, joy, and peace of mind in their families and communities. This approach helps build enduring legacies, creating impact that resonates through generations.

This relationship-focused approach ensures our guidance aligns with the family and the Next Gen’s ambitions and the family’s legacy, fostering a strong, personalized partnership.

Supporting organizations like St. Jude/ ALSAC as a leading Advisory Council member and SVCF as a partner, and contributing to a range of faith-related organizations, align with ThreeEQ’s mission of instilling these values in young leaders, ensuring they are prepared to lead with heart and a sense of responsibility and purpose.

ThreeEQ is poised to lead in blending these elements for a more impactful mentoring experience.

BEHIND WITH THE SCENES

CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU GOT INTO EVENT ORGANIZATION WITHIN THE FINANCE AND INVESTMENT SECTOR?

My background was initially in sales, and before joining Opal, I worked in marketing for my stepfather's media company. Event organization was new to me when I started, but I’ve always had strong interpersonal skills, which helped me transition smoothly into the role. In this industry, building rapport and making people feel comfortable quickly is essential, and I found that my ability to connect with people played a significant role in my success in event organization.

WHAT IS YOUR GUIDING PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO ORGANIZING IMPACTFUL CONFERENCES?

My guiding philosophy is to ensure our conferences offer value for everyone. Our events cater to a wide array of investors and service providers, each with unique goals. While it’s challenging to satisfy everyone, we strive to come as close as possible by designing a comprehensive experience that meets diverse needs and interests.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE STEPS YOU TAKE FROM THE INITIAL CONCEPT OF AN EVENT TO ITS FINAL EXECUTION?

1. Selecting the Location: Working with our Head of Meeting Planning, Joanna, prioritize and confirm well-known, accessible venues to ensure ease of attendance for participants.

2. Engaging Our Core Audience: I begin outreach to our established clients—those who have not only benefited from our past events but have also significantly contributed to their success.

3. Securing Industry Leaders: I connect with prominent figures in the industry to secure their commitment, adding credibility and interest to the event.

4. Promoting to Sponsors: I ensure our sponsors are fully informed and engaged, highlighting the value they’ll gain by participating.

5. Balancing Participants: Finally, I maintain an appropriate balance between investors and sponsors to foster productive interactions and networking opportunities.

WHAT ROLE DOES FEEDBACK FROM PREVIOUS EVENTS PLAY IN YOUR PLANNING FOR FUTURE CONFERENCES?

Feedback is integral to our planning process. Our Head of Marketing, Domarc, ensures that feedback questionnaires are sent to all attendees within 48-72 hours after each event, allowing us to capture their impressions while they’re still fresh. We are always striving to enhance the quality of our events, and client feedback enables us to make incremental improvements, year after year. These small, continuous adjustments help us elevate the experience and meet evolving client expectations.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF YOUR AUDIENCE WHEN SELECTING TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION?

We go straight to the source: our audience. They are the “boots on the ground” in the industry, so they provide invaluable insights into the issues that directly impact their work. Many of our panel topics are inspired by suggestions from our speakers, who live and breathe these subjects daily. This approach ensures that our discussions remain relevant and impactful, aligning closely with the interests and needs of our attendees.

WHAT INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES DO YOU EMPLOY TO ENGAGE ATTENDEES IN A NON-TRADITIONAL FORMAT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE FIRESIDE CHAT STYLE?

One key strategy is to bring in high-caliber, well-known speakers who not only share relevant insights but also engage actively with the audience. For example, we recently hosted General Petraeus at our Napa event; he not only answered audience questions but also stayed afterward to chat with attendees, take photos, and connect personally. Additionally, having an exceptional chairman for the event makes a significant difference. A great chair can set the tone, energize the audience, and guide the discussion seamlessly. We were fortunate to have Jason Ma chair our last two family office events in the Hamptons and Napa, respectively, where his skillful facilitation enriched the panels and contributed to an engaging and dynamic atmosphere.

HOW DO YOU SELECT AND SECURE SPEAKERS FOR YOUR EVENTS? WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A SPEAKER?

We select speakers based on their expertise on the topic and the value they bring to the discussion. However, we also prioritize dynamism and passion—qualities that make for an engaging, thought-provoking experience. Our goal is to choose individuals who can captivate the audience and spark meaningful conversations. One way I gauge a speaker’s effectiveness is by observing how engaged the audience is; if most attendees are focused on the stage rather than their devices, I know we’ve chosen well.

CRAFTING EVENTS ELEVATING CONNECTIONS INVESTMENT AND

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH INVESTMENT TOPICS ARE MOST RELEVANT FOR EACH EVENT, GIVEN THE RAPIDLY CHANGING LANDSCAPE?

I stay informed primarily through ongoing discussions with our panelists, attending other industry events, and keeping a close eye on current affairs through news broadcasts. Engaging directly with experts and staying updated on industry trends allows me to bring timely, relevant topics to our panels that resonate with our audience.

WHAT TRENDS DO YOU FORESEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF INVESTMENT CONFERENCES, AND HOW ARE YOU ADAPTING YOUR EVENT STRATEGIES ACCORDINGLY?

In our private wealth conferences, I anticipate a growing focus on the softer aspects of wealth management, such as legacy planning. As Millennials and Gen Zs begin to reshape investment preferences, transitioning from the Boomer and Gen X perspectives, these issues

are becoming increasingly relevant. To address this shift, we are introducing new topics that delve into these areas, as we’ve observed a lack of such content within our community. Our goal is to ensure our events reflect and support these evolving priorities in wealth management.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO INCORPORATE EMERGING TOPICS OR TECHNOLOGIES INTO YOUR UPCOMING EVENTS?

We continuously update and adjust our panel topics to keep pace with current realities and emerging trends. For instance, our December and January events will feature discussions on the impact of the upcoming election—a topic that will undoubtedly affect many facets of our industry. This flexibility allows us to address timely issues and ensure our events remain relevant and impactful for our audience.

REFLECTING ON YOUR PAST EVENTS, WHICH MOMENTS OR OUTCOMES HAVE BEEN THE MOST REWARDING FOR YOU PERSONALLY?

The most rewarding aspect has been the relationships I've built over time. I've been fortunate to form genuine friendships with some of my clients, which has made this work especially fulfilling. A particularly memorable moment was organizing our inaugural family office event in Southampton this past August. Bringing that event to life was a milestone, and seeing its success was incredibly gratifying.

HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR EVENTS WILL IMPACT THE ATTENDEES AND THE BROADER INVESTMENT COMMUNITY?

Through fostering connection. My vision is for our events to become gathering places where people not only learn best practices but also gain insights they can apply in their personal and professional lives. I want attendees to leave feeling educated, inspired, and equipped with valuable takeaways that will make a meaningful impact.

AS YOU PREPARE FOR THE 25TH ANNUAL ENDOWMENT AND FOUNDATION FORUM, WHAT ARE YOUR PRIMARY FOCUS AREAS

AND OBJECTIVES?

My primary focus is to restore the confidence and engagement levels we saw before COVID. In recent years, attendance has fallen below our expectations, so this year, our main goal is to attract a strong lineup of quality speakers and attendees. We’re also introducing fresh panel topics designed to bring a new energy to the conference and encourage dynamic interactions. Our aim is to create an experience that both reinvigorates past attendees and draws in new ones.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO ENTER THE FIELD OF EVENT ORGANIZATION IN SPECIALIZED SECTORS LIKE FINANCE?

In this field, relationships are key; it’s essential to focus on building genuine connections before discussing business. Being outgoing and willing to invest time in getting to know people will be critical to your success. Additionally, be prepared for significant travel—it’s a large part of the job and an opportunity to connect with clients and partners face-to-face.

LOOKING AHEAD, ARE THERE ANY INITIATIVES OR GOALS YOU HOPE TO PURSUE IN

YOUR

ROLE WITH OPAL

GROUP?

In 2025, we’re excited to launch several new events, both nationally and internationally, to broaden our reach and impact. To support this expansion, I plan to grow our team in both size and expertise, with the goal of increasing our global relevance. By building a more diverse and capable team, we aim to deliver events that resonate across regions and industries.

WHAT UPCOMING EVENTS CAN PARTICIPANTS LOOK FORWARD TO, AND HOW CAN THEY BEST PREPARE TO ENGAGE WITH THE TOPICS BEING DISCUSSED?

I’d say all our events offer something unique! However, if I had to choose, our Family Office events in Newport, RI, and the Hamptons stand out as our largest and most memorable gatherings. These events truly have a special atmosphere. For our clients, the best approach is to attend with an open mind—both toward the people they’ll meet and the panels they’ll experience. This openness allows them to fully embrace the insights and connections these events offer.

WHAT INITIATIVES OR NEXT STEPS ARE YOU CONSIDERING TO FURTHER ENHANCE CLIENT

RELATIONS AND

ENGAGEMENT

WITHIN THE INVESTMENT COMMUNITY?

We are focused on expanding our social media presence to strengthen our connection with clients year-round. Additionally, we’re working to facilitate connections between clients outside of our conferences—where appropriate—to build a sense of community and keep the conversation going. By foster-

ing these connections and creating ongoing buzz around our events, we aim to enhance our engagement and ensure that our events resonate well beyond the conference room.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT YOUR VISION FOR FUTURE EVENTS OR YOUR ROLE IN THE INDUSTRY?

I believe the future of the event space, like many other industries, will be significantly shaped by AI. Leveraging AI technology offers immense potential to scale our events more efficiently and effectively, enhancing everything from personalized attendee experiences to streamlined logistics. As we integrate these advancements, I’m excited about the possibilities for growth and innovation in delivering even more impactful events.

HOW CAN INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS STAY UPDATED ON YOUR UPCOMING EVENTS AND INITIATIVES?

Staying updated is easy! All our events are listed on our homepage at Opalgroup.net. You can also follow us on LinkedIn to see our latest announcements and visit our Instagram page for behind-the-scenes updates and highlights from current events.

From Humble Beginnings Globalto Networks

A candid conversation with a seasoned advisor and entrepreneur, exploring a journey from humble beginnings to founding Aspen Tree Advisory, navigating the complexities of wealth management, and fostering impactful connections. Discover insights on resilience, innovation, and giving back.

Q: You’ve had a distinguished career working with ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices. What inspired you to enter this field, and how has your approach evolved over the years?

A: To be very transparent, when I began my career in finance, I didn’t even know what a family office was. I wound up in finance by mistake. Coming from a blue-collar family, I always thought I would be a firefighter or police officer, and I always admired their work. In mid-2001, I started working with a friend in the mortgage banking sector and realized that not only did this allow me to meet people from different walks of life, but it also expanded my horizons. I met folks with different professions and varying financial means, helping them achieve the dream of homeownership while also facilitating loans to commercial owners or developers. I used that professional experience to grow my network and identify areas where I could stand out as a banker. This experience paved my path to becoming a private banker for a regional bank, a Managing Director at a private bank, a Managing Director and Senior Advisor to another private bank, starting a roll-up registered investment advisor, and now running my own firm for the past eight years.

Q: Aspen Tree Advisory was launched in 2016. What motivated you to start this venture, and what gap in the market were you trying to fill at the time?

A: When I launched Aspen Tree Advisory in 2016, it was at a point in my life when I had just become a father to my first little girl. The financial advisory/banking industry was thriving, and I saw an opportunity to give financial professionals like myself independence through my new venture. I also wanted to offer sophisticated investors the opportunity to access alternative investments while not disrupting their institutional relationships. Additionally, I wanted to create a forum to educate and build a community, while maintaining that amazing "client-first" corporate culture that I helped build during my tenure at First Republic Bank.

Q: As someone with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, what drives you to constantly launch new ventures, and how do you manage the multiple roles you play as an advisor, entrepreneur, and investor?

A: For me, entrepreneurial spirit is something intrinsic; it requires the ability to not only celebrate your wins but also to not internalize your losses while doing every-

thing in your power to do the right thing. As a serial entrepreneur, you need to know when to move on, learn from your mistakes, and change with the current market environment—not only for your business and personal interests but for your clients and portfolio companies as well. We continue to move forward and act quickly as opportunities present themselves, no matter how busy we are. This is achieved by having a network and team that allows us to scale up and down as required by current mandates. It also gives us the diversity of expertise to service different sectors.

Q: You’ve built relationships with some of the most successful and wealthy individuals globally. What’s your secret to maintaining those long-lasting and trusted relationships?

A: Although I live by the First Republic core value of "move forward, move fast," in this case, it’s exactly the opposite. I try to never enter a relationship with an ask or short-term personal agenda. I genuinely believe that fostering relationships by doing the right thing while getting to know people is key to maintaining lucrative and trusted relationships. Living by this rule builds trust and admiration, allowing for long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.

Q: Could you share one of the most interesting or surprising stories you’ve experienced while networking with the rich and famous?

A: I guess this story ties together my last interview question, my philanthropic mission, and one of my most memorable professional successes. I was never personally affected by Alzheimer’s; however, I experienced many medical cases as a volunteer first responder. It is a horrible illness. In my experience, not only was the patient affected by the loss of cognitive ability and function, but it also took a major toll on their families and caregivers. I offered my support to a charitable organization with no personal agenda besides doing my part to donate, raise money, and create awareness for an organization focused on accelerating the discovery of drugs to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer's, other dementias, and cognitive aging. I never wanted to see another person suffer while leaving ill memories behind for their loved ones. Through doing the

right thing, supporting what I believed in, and offering my unwavering support to the best of my ability, I fostered some of the most career-changing relationships—not only from a monetary perspective but, most importantly, from a personal and professional growth standpoint.

Q: With so many high-profile connections, how do you balance personal friendships with professional partnerships, ensuring integrity and trust in both?

ASPEN TREE, LLC

BRINGING FAMILIES CLOSER THROUGH COLLABORATION AND ORGANIC ROOTS.

Aspen Tree, LLC is a highly specialized consulting and advisory firm with demonstrated success originating and maintaining strong relationships within the ultra-high-net-worth community.

Aspen Tree's primary areas of focus are identifying and managing strategic relationships and opportunities, within the alternative investment, private equity, venture capital, real estate, RIA and family office community.

A: In my opinion, and what I’ve learned over my life and professional career, a friendship is a relationship with someone that I implicitly trust and want in my life, regardless of any professional benefit they may offer. It’s someone I would do anything for, and who would do the same for me and my family in return. A professional

partnership, on the other hand, is someone I trust, who has high integrity, and with whom we can professionally support each other’s agendas while maintaining a business relationship. I truly believe that both personal friendships and professional partnerships require consistent communication, trust, and integrity, as that is the foundation of any meaningful relationship.

Q: You were a first responder during the 9/11 attacks. How did that experience shape your life and career, and how do you reflect on it today?

A: 9/11 was a frightful and surreal day in most Americans' lives, especially for those who lost their lives or lost loved ones. On that day, I did what most first responders do: I put my fears and uncertainty aside and acted in the most helpful way I knew how. My in

volvement was to directly assist in rescue and recovery efforts following one of the largest attacks on American soil. To further answer your question, it humbled me at a very young age. It gave me a sense of what is important and what’s not. It definitely put perspective on the value of life, made me realize that if you have a skill or the capability to add value somewhere, you can change someone’s life, and it reminded me that every human is vulnerable. It also taught me not to knock others down on your way up, because in rescue and recovery, a responder is not as strong or safe without a team.

Q: What lessons did you take away from your time as a Rescue and Recovery Responder, and how have those lessons influenced your leadership and advisory roles?

A: I think it’s important to treat and have conversations with people as if that conversation may be their last. I think it’s important to do things that make the quality of your friends', families', and clients' lives better than they would be if you weren’t there. Lastly, I truly feel that personal development, growth, and leading by example are all lessons learned through my volunteer work and public service.

Q: Did your involvement in such a tragic event affect your view of philanthropy and your commitment to charitable work?

A: No, and I only say that because prior to 9/11, I already had a desire to help. That’s why I was trained to assist on 9/11. I was a volunteer first responder and an active member of the American Red Cross DAT Team before and after the tragic events of 9/11. I would like to add that most of my charitable work stems from vulnerabilities, sicknesses, or life-altering incidents I have seen people endure during my time as a first responder.

Q: As the head of family office co-investment and advisory for multiple family offices, how do you navigate the complexities of structuring and diligence for such a diverse range of assets?

A: I know what I am good at and when to call for reinforcements. I have learned a lot over nearly two decades spent on and around Wall Street. I utilize those skills, lessons, knowledge, and, most importantly, my robust network to effectively and efficiently service the needs of our clients. I also believe in the power of outsourced solutions— whether it’s investment selection, service provider selection, or investor awareness.

This philosophy affords us the ability to focus on strategy, unbiased advisory, relationship management, and growth.

Q: Your work spans multiple industries, from cannabis to venture capital to alternative energy. How do you identify the next big opportunity, and what excites you about the future of these sectors?

A: This is a thought-provoking question. My work has spanned many industries over my career, and that in part is because, as a finance professional, you are only as relevant as the diversity, differentiation, and familiarity of the next hot topic you have—especially when it comes to sophisticated investors such as family offices. The two sectors I can comment on are alternative energy and venture capital. I say that because our country is calling for energy, technology, and innovation.

Q: What advice do you give entrepreneurs and businesses looking to scale in today’s fast-paced market environment?

A: My best advice would be to surround yourself with smarter, more connected people than yourself (I do), do your diligence and analysis on your competitors, focus on IP and enforceability, and go big or go home. I often get calls from founders who have a great idea, business, or fund, but they don’t want to pay anyone, they don’t have a marketing budget, or they don’t want to dilute themselves when it comes to equity. In those situations, I often see those founders drown quickly or die a slow, miserable death because of

OUR FOUNDER AND HISTORY

Thomas J. Haug founded Aspen Tree Advisory in 2015 to address a critical need in family office advisory services. With over two decades of experience, he has advised 31+ family offices, including multi-billion-dollar entities, on asset allocation, co-investments, and wealth preservation.

A serial entrepreneur, Mr. Haug also leads an investor consulting practice helping businesses scale and created Venture Talk Weekly, a platform exploring venture capital and market trends. His career includes leadership roles at A.W. Jones Private Advisors, Fieldpoint Private, and First Republic Bank, where he managed hundreds of millions in assets and nearly a billion dollars in financing.

Mr. Haug is a recognized thought leader, having spoken at 75+ global events on topics such as entrepreneurship, alternative investments, and capital markets. His industry expertise spans venture capital, alternative energy, impact investing, and cannabis.

Deeply committed to philanthropy, Mr. Haug supports causes like child welfare, Alzheimer’s research, and anti-trafficking efforts. A 9/11 Rescue and Recovery Responder, he continues to prioritize service and community impact.

A New York native and outdoorsman, Mr. Haug treasures time with his daughters, Serafina and Sorley, reflecting his values of integrity, innovation, and dedication to others.

shortsighted, selfish, self-important behaviors when they don’t put their partners, advisors, investors, and advocates first.

Q: What’s on the horizon for you and Aspen Tree Advisory? Are there any upcoming events or ventures you’re particularly excited about?

A: As you know, we recently branded our investor event series as Momentous Summit powered by Aspen Tree Advisory. We host the “official investor event” around multiple conferences that I speak at, host highly curated investor dinners, and create investor experiences. This format allows us and our co-sponsors to centralize investors by creating an experience and networking opportunity, maximizing sponsor exposure in a relaxed environment during conferences and other opportunistic events.

Q: Venture Talk Weekly has garnered attention in the venture capital space. What inspired you to launch this platform, and how has it been received by the investment community?

A: Similar to something I answered above, finance is all about staying "relevant." Venture Talk Weekly was born out of the pandemic. It was created when I was pacing in my home office in April of 2020, thinking about how to stay relevant without conferences, networking events, in-person engagement, and the like. I brought together a few industry professionals/ co-investors and produced this video-cast, where we had a new notable guest every episode, weekly. We would talk about public markets, private markets, venture capital activity, and unusual market activity. Our viewer base grew in folds, as did our

database. During the pandemic, I also did “cooking with Tom,” where I would send a list of ingredients, food-prep instructions, and wine pairing recommendations. However, Venture Talk Weekly was a fan favorite—even by the most notable investors and families.

Q: You’re involved with numerous philanthropic organizations. What causes are closest to your heart, and how do you integrate philanthropy into your busy professional life?

A: Child welfare is front and center. This is not only because I have two girls of my own, but also because every child deserves a fighting chance. There is so much bad in this world; you can’t advocate for it all, but advocating for our future generation—their safety and success—will resolve other issues that exist. Everyone is busy in their professional and personal lives; to say there’s not enough time is only an excuse. You find time for what’s important.

Q: Looking back on your career so far, what are you most proud of achieving, both personally and professionally?

A: I am proud of all my successes and failures/learning experiences. It has all been part of the journey, and although some more celebratory than others, it has shaped who I am today as a person and a professional. I am proud that it has been 8 years since I launched Aspen Tree Advisory, and we have become an industry staple and name in the alternative investment community through multiple iterations as we shaped our identity. I would sum it up as I am most proud of being a full-time dad, building one of the largest investor networks in the world, working hand in hand with my wife, maintaining professional friendships, surviving the COVID shutdown, and adapting to the changing times.

Q: What legacy do you hope to leave in the worlds of venture capital, family office advising, and philanthropy?

A: The core values I live by: Stay humble, move fast, build others up and you will grow, stay ahead of time, keep a network smarter than you, be honest, believe in yourself, trust but verify.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to young professionals aiming to follow in your footsteps, what would it be?

A: Don’t try to be an entrepreneur before you are ready for it. Don’t get comfortable. Make moves until you get the results you deserve and always hustle. If it weren’t for my “jobs” prior to launching my own business, I would not have had the success I have today. Be a sponge, listen more, and speak less. When one of my mentors gave me that advice, I was taken aback, yet it was one of the best pieces of advice I ever received. Lastly, don’t get stuck under someone who doesn’t want to see you on top. If a boss or employer does not see your value and you are truly trying your hardest, run... run fast!
