TOP STORIES THE LATEST NEWS AND HEADLINES FROM CORNWALL CARE

CORNWALL CARE SCOOPS TWO TOP 20 AWARDS! We are extremely proud to tell you that we, Cornwall Care, Cornwall’s largest care provider have been recognised as one of the Top 20 recommended care home groups in the country, with Trewartha being named as one of the Top 20 homes in the South West! The accolades are made in this year’s Top 20 Care Home Awards which are based on more than 55,000 reviews and recommendations from care home residents, their families and friends from February 2014 to February 2015 via the website carehome.co.uk. Cornwall Care’s overall ranking as one of the top 20 mid-size care home groups in the country was based on an average review score of 9.1 out of a possible 10 across its 16 care homes, with no home scoring less than 8 out of 10.

value and recognise the vital services that we and others provide to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.” Among the many positive reviews for Trewartha was the following from January this year: “All the staff were fantastic and made my mother feel very special and well cared for. I cannot rate Trewartha House highly enough. It’s so special to see your loved one being treated as perfectly as you would wish.” Another said: “I count my blessings daily when I see the care and attention my husband receives at the Trewartha Care Home. Peace of mind is everything when a loved one is being cared for away from home.” Well done everyone!

The highest scoring home was Trewartha, our 36-bed home in Carbis Bay specialising in dementia and nursing care, which scored 9.9, earning a ranking in the top 20 recommended homes in the South West for the second year running. Robert Black, our Chief Executive at Cornwall Care said: “These awards are a tremendous testament to the quality of care delivered by our kind and dedicated staff day in and day out. To be ranked among the best providers in the entire country by the very people we care for, their families and friends, speaks volumes and we would like to thank all those people who took the time to recommend us. Adult social care remains under great pressure in this country and it’s important that people

Outstanding Staff Awards WITH OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS THIS YEAR, WE DECIDED THAT AN AWARDS CEREMONY CELEBRATING ALL OUR STAFF TRAINING AND INCREDIBLE CARE ACHIEVEMENTS WOULD BE THE PERFECT WAY OF THANKING OUR STAFF FOR THEIR INCREDIBLE DEDICATION TO CARE. When we put out the call that ‘nominations were open’ we were absolutely delighted at the response. So many of you got involved and had a think about who you thought was special and overall we received a fantastic 130 nominations! We had a fabulous afternoon at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay and would like to share with you some of our favourite nominations and a selection of photographs from the day. MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO DEMENTIA CARE Winner – Derek Slater “Derek is a Support Worker who has worked for Cornwall Care since January 2013 and with Supported Living since June 2014. Derek is a highly motivated individual who is passionate about providing the highest standards of dementia care to the person he supports. Derek has challenged working practices, shared his own knowledge, experience and understanding of working with dementia and guided staff with less experience to gain a better understanding of the person that they support. Derek shows high levels of care and compassion and keeps the person that he is supporting as the central focus for everything that he does whilst he is at work. OUTSTANDING NEWCOMER Winner – Gemma Negus “Gemma came to work for us in March 2015. She was brand new to Cornwall Care and she really embraced the senior position of HCA3. Previously Gemma worked for Boots and as a Community Carer. Her experience with Boots has benefited us regarding the medications and processes. Gemma is highly regarded by the whole team; the care staff value her support and find her approachable. Gemma is always willing to lend a hand to the care staff and help out whenever she’s needed. She has a great rapport with the clients and seems to have a calming effect, even with the most agitated! Gemma gets on well with all family members and she sorts issues/concerns with the minimum of fuss. I think every service should have a Gemma!” Finalists • Nicola Gavin • Jackie Star

CLINICAL ACHIEVEMENT Winner – Tertia Herman “Tertia, our Clinical Specialist Nurse, is a huge support to Cornwall Care, to all services. Tertia has a wealth of knowledge, experience and skill. She brings to the role care, consideration, attention to detail, and a willingness to do anything she can to improve the care we provide and therefore the care that our residents receive. Tertia’s knowledge is always up to date and she is able to inform us of all the current best practice requirements and supports us to ensure that we achieve these. She sees our residents as individuals and takes account of all their needs when discussing care, not just clinical needs. Tertia offers suggestions to solve any issues we have and always follows this through by checking how things are going and if the improvements have worked. Tertia has taken on additional responsibilities when needed to ensure that we are providing the best we can at all times. She is so valuable, always willing to give her time and advice, willing to roll up her sleeves and help when needed.” Finalists • Sergio Oliveria • Silva Pinto • Sarah Woodman

BEST INNOVATIVE PROJECT IDEA Winner – Angela Biro “Angela came to us last year and asked if she could start a gardening club. She was given permission to take on the whole project and what she achieved was beyond our expectations. During the summer the garden was amazing. The vegetables and fruit stocked our kitchens well. The organisation was perfect and all the clients participated regardless of their disabilities or cognitive impairments. Angela found just the right tasks to suit each individual’s needs to ensure they were included. News travelled fast and soon relatives also joined in the weekly club. Donations of seeds, cuttings and a greenhouse were brought in to Trewartha. We even had volunteers from the local community offering their services. The project was planned from start to finish and the end date was our harvest festival which brought the whole home to tears. It was very emotional. Angela brought so much joy to people’s hearts and the bonds between everyone have grown stronger.” Finalists • Annie Scott • Sarah Edom

OUTSTANDING APPRENTICE Winner – Michelle Russell “Michelle has recently undertaken and completed her Diploma Level 3 in Health and Social Care, having started while she was working as an HCA2 at Trevarna. Throughout her Diploma, Michelle demonstrated a high standard of care, providing an excellent role model to others who sought her advice. She always demonstrated a person-centred approach to her role, displaying the excellent rapport she has with her clients and colleagues and showing a high standard of theory based work as well. Michelle was always keen and motivated to progress and meet all her deadlines, asking ‘what can I do now’ and using her own initiative. During her Diploma she was asked to ‘step-up’ to an HCA3 post; she found this challenging at first but soon thrived on the new skills she was developing. A client’s next of kin approached me to say what a wonderful carer Michelle was and to say how she always goes the extra mile. Michelle is kind and warm-hearted; nothing is ever too much for her and she is a true inspiration to others and a real pleasure to work with.” Finalists • Rachel Orchard • Amy Newland

When Rachel first started her qualification she was working as an HCA2 at Trevarna. Rachel continuously demonstrates a commitment to her learning, completing all assignments within deadlines. Even though at times Rachel struggled with the theory side, she never gave up and always remained positive to progress, looking at further research as required. Rachel continuously demonstrated great strength and determination. She has an extremely warm and friendly approach and demonstrates excellent rapport with her clients and colleagues. Rachel works at a high standard, always ready to identify and challenge poor practice. Others look to her as a role model and seek her advice and guidance. She continuously looks at ways to push herself and enhance her personal development. She always has time for her clients and colleagues, has a warm and caring nature, always has a smile on her face and brightens up the place by singing and being a pleasure to work with.” Finalists • Natalie Hudson • Nicola Taylor

OUTSTANDING ROLE MODEL Winner – Allen Puckey “I had the pleasure of employing Allen in 2011. He had previously worked in his family’s fish selling business but working in care was something he had always wanted to do. As his Team Leader and Level 2 Diploma Assessor I watched him develop excellent practice skills and knowledge. He was always enthusiastic and extremely hard working. As a carer he is an excellent role model providing a high quality service for his clients, promoting active participation, self esteem and individuality. He will always do extra, often popping back in his own time with shopping etc. We have received lovely feedback from clients and family members, expressing what a difference Allen has made, many who request to be able to see him more. Simply, Allen makes them smile each day. Recently Allen trained as a Care Certificate Assessor working alongside new carers to demonstrate and share good practice. At the end of 2015, Allen was nominated by his team for the National Care Awards and received the runner up prize.” Finalists • Katie Dean • Jo Parson

She is dedicated to the company and is always there to lend a hand with a smile on her face. As Service Development Manager, she has developed a number of services within the company, leading and developing homes with the transition between residential to nursing services. Julia is admired and respected by all the staff, clients and relatives and has gathered many compliments over the years.” “The BEST manager ever!! Always happy to help and develop her team. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Julia always helps her care team ensuring everyone is supported and happy.” “Julia is probably one of the best managers I have ever worked with. She has excellent leadership qualities and was a great mentor. Julia is fair and highly supportive towards team members and motivates and empowers staff daily.”

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT Winner – Sharon Cartmel “Sharon is a great Home Manager. She’s very approachable, is good for Trevarna and gets things sorted. She is also very good with clients’ families. I hope she can stay.” “Sharon has made me feel very welcome and I love working with her! She definitely deserves an award as she’s one in a million.” “Trevarna needs Sharon here. Her friendly, helpful, non-judgemental approach towards staff, clients and families has made Trevarna a very enjoyable place to work. If she was to leave we would be lost. She puts 110% into her work, always follows up with requests, works with the staff and makes everyone feel that what they are doing is worthwhile.” “Since Sharon has been at Trevarna the atmosphere has lifted and it is surprising how one person can have such an impact. I really appreciate the support that Sharon has shown me on a professional and personal level. The difference in how the home is running is evident to all who work here at Trevarna and we all hope that she can stay. She is a real asset to Trevarna.”

Johnny is a dedicated and committed member of staff who puts the person that he supports at the centre of everything that he does. He demonstrates a professional approach to providing support at all times, taking on advice, guidance, new learning and adapting his approach to working as and when required. Johnny is a key support to his Senior Support Worker and works to cover aspects of the Senior Support Workers role in their absence (e.g. communicating with staff about shift cover, arranging appointments for the person he supports, liaising with professionals and highlighting issues and concerns regarding the person he supports. Johnny works in a way that maintains a calm and therapeutic environment at all times and is not outwardly phased by any challenges that are presented during the course of his work. He is highly regarded by the person he supports and this is evident through their interaction and the positive way that the person he supports responds to him. Johnny is supportive of team members and works to share his knowledge and skills” Finalists • Michelle Brown • Jackie Teague • Tania Williams

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD Winner – Luke Bond “Luke is a younger member of the Home Care team and to some would appear to be a joker, however Luke is an outstanding employee. He is totally committed to his role as Area Manager in Home Care, flexibly going above and beyond what is needed for his team and his clients, which can result in working long hours. Luke is dedicated and passionate in his role and has been working to recruit staff using his own initiative with a good level of success, not only for Home Care but for the company as a whole. Luke has a big heart, is a friendly face and is a positive team member as a leader and as an advocate for his clients. Thankfully there are people like Luke out in the world!” “Luke is an outstanding human being. He cares passionately about his team, making sure his clients never receive less than the best care, empathy and support. Luke is a motivator; whenever he visits our department it is like a breath of fresh air. He is totally engaged and his positiveness rubs off on all those he comes into contact with. Nothing (and I mean this) is too much trouble. He will go out of his way to support and help others. I would love it if my Mum was in his care!” “He goes above and beyond to ensure that all of his clients get the care they require and that his staff are all happy with their shifts. If any of them have appointments during their scheduled work times, we try to cover it, but if we can’t, Luke will go out and do it himself. For the last few weeks he has been working his 39 hour contract along with covering up to 20 plus hours a week care in the community, as well as being on call. When a new staff member left without warning, in order not to overwork his carers and keep them as near to their contracted hours as possible, Luke picked up the extra calls to help out. He even went to Treliske on Christmas Day to visit one of our old clients to make sure she had company. This week he met a gentleman who seemed to be struggling to walk in Penzance. Luke helped him home, stayed with him for over an hour, cooked him a meal, tidied his living room as the man had been struggling due to health problems and being on his own. Luke took all of his details and passed them onto social services in the hope he can get some help. We had a call from the hospital last year – a patient wanted to come home to die and would need night sits. Luke took this on, on the understanding that if any of his team could do the night sits, he would cover

their calls and if they couldn’t do it he would. He stayed with the client until he passed away. These are just a few examples of how Luke has gone out of his way to help and deliver outstanding care and ensure that no call is missed, whatever the circumstances.” * It is so lovely for us to hear these great stories about our staff going out of their way to create happiness and wellbeing wherever they go. We are incredibly proud as an organisation to have such fantastic high achievers with such hearts of gold. Everyone who attended the awards ceremony had a wonderful time and it was fantastic to reward and recognise the amazing efforts and accomplishments of our staff. It is delightful to see how many of our staff go above and beyond what is expected of them and we are very proud to be able to support the people of Cornwall in all weathers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with such genuine love and care. A massive congratulations to all our nominees and a great big thank you to all our staff for nominating, for working so hard and for putting on a really special event!

We can’t wait to do it again next year! 11

MOUNTFORD

A wonderful day was had by all at Joy and Frank Richards’ Wedding Anniversary at Mountford, where we celebrated their 65 years of marriage in style. Staff decorated the main dining area and gave Joy a card and some sapphire earrings from Frank (from our Comforts Fund at Mountford), while friends and family gathered around them and showered them with love and gifts, opening the bubbly and celebrating their anniversary together. Joy was so happy she wrote a thank you card that said:

, To everyone at Mountford very Just a simple ‘thank you muc h’ for all the fun and for excitement you all created us on our 65th Wedding for Anniversary yesterday. Also will your lovely gift which I always treasure. Love, M any, many thanks and From Frank and Joy. She also added: “May I also say how very much I appreciate the care, kindness and consideration you have shown Frank ever since he arrived at Mountford. TREVERN

>

Our residents and staff had a wonderful time at Trevern in February, where they had a visit from the Lizard Stallions pony therapy group who brought along some gorgeous ponies and Phoebe, their adorable Jack Russell dog! We love having the Lizard Stallions over at Trevern, our residents really enjoy meeting the ponies, walking them round and stroking them. We are delighted every time they visit us! * This Easter, staff and residents at Trevern celebrated the season with a raffle, tombola, cake stall, teas and coffees as well as a competition to ‘Guess the name of the Easter rabbit’. We had some singing, some great bits on the jumble stall and lots of laughter throughout the day. We raised a fantastic £434 for our residents’ Comforts Fund, which we plan on spending on some more exciting activities for our residents at Trevern! Thank you to everyone that donated and took part in the day, we had great fun!

REDANNICK

Earlier this year we had a lovely day at Redannick, where staff and residents enjoyed another of their favourite ‘Pets as Therapy’ sessions. On this occasion, we were visited by a lovely dog and a very chatty parrot, who very much enjoyed sitting on our carers’ heads and brought out lots of smiles and laughter! The next week, ‘Pets as Therapy’ returned with a surprise, two gorgeous budgies which they have donated to Redannick. Staff and residents each put names into a box and when the winning names (chosen by Emma, one of our residents) were pulled out, we had a lovely naming ceremony for our new budgies. Thank you ‘Pets as Therapy’ for such a lovely donation and welcome to Redannick – Peter and Paul!

We are delighted to share the success of Mrs Abbott’s rehabilitation at Trevern. After living with us since the end of September 2014 we are so happy to see that she has been able to recover from her illness and return home to her husband, who missed her terribly! A big thank you goes to our Physiotherapy team and the amazing staff members at Trevern that looked after Mrs Abbott with such tenderness and care.

BLACKWOOD

>

We have been absolutely delighted at Blackwood recently, where we have been blessed by little Mia, who continues to visit us and share with us her love of baking. Mia has visited us on several occasions now (her mum is one of our HCAs) and she is an absolute joy to have around. Her cupcakes are lovely and beautifully made; we are very grateful for the time and effort she puts into making them and for her efforts to sell them and raise money for our residents’ Comforts Fund at Blackwood, which pays for things like entertainment, activities and gifts for our residents. Thank you Mia, you are our little baking star!

MOUNTFORD

Our residents had a lovely time at Mountford recently where they enjoyed making and baking clay shapes, then decorating them the next week with acrylic paints.
