Lutheran Church of the Redeemer’s Statement of Welcome

We serve a God of abundant grace and generosity Our worship is centered on the invitation that Christ offers at the communion table: all are welcome in this place. That welcome flows through all we do and say We open our arms to everyone who comes to share our love of God and all God’s people. We affirm and value the lives of everyone, including all who have been marginalized by ability, age, gender, gender identity, mental or physical health, poverty, race, sexual orientation, or any other circumstance Let our message be clear: all are welcome to participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost Pastor Mark H. Larson, preaching

The theme of the Day

A woman finds healing by touching Jesus’ cloak, and a girl is restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases a boundary is crossed: in Jesus’ time the hemorrhaging woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean. In Mark’s gospel Jesus breaks down barriers, from his first meal at a tax collector’s house to his last breath on the cross as the temple curtain is torn in two We dare to touch Jesus in our “uncleanness” and to live as a community that defines no one as an outsider.

Continuing this SUNDAY our summer worship services will be held in the Sims Atrium. The Property Team has planned work that requires scaffolding that will fill the nave: repairs to our 70+-year-old electrical systems and upgrades to our lighting They expect the work to take around 6 weeks, returning to the nave in early August. The Worship Team is working to ensure that services in the Sims Atrium are familiar and comfortable

Attention Ministry Chairs & Teams: We need your ministry team at our Tailgate Rally Day on August 18th! This is the perfect way to have some fun, enjoy fellowship, but most importantly share the work that God does through your ministry! We’ll have games, wear our favorite team gear, and support ministry at Redeemer and beyond! Please email your ministry chair and begin this planning process or reach out to Pr. Jennifer with more information (jroberts@redeemer.org)!

[URGENT] Responding to the Crisis in the Middle East

Dear church,

In response to the horrific, ongoing violence in and around Gaza, I recently shared a new message, calling on us to continue to pray for those who suffer and grieve, advocate for an immediate cease-fire and walk with all who long for a just peace

The ELCA is walking with many partners in the region, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and Augusta Victoria Hospital, to address the most pressing needs for people in the areas surrounding Gaza, including the West Bank and other Occupied Territories. Right now, we are helping meet many essential needs such as food, water, health care, shelter, keeping schools open, mental health care and providing medical supplies There is so much yet to be done

When the cease-fire comes and when, God willing, our partners can reestablish work in Gaza, our church stands ready to continue our response A gift today will equip Lutheran Disaster Response to walk with neighbors to rebuild their lives and communities

GIVE NOW

We pray fervently for that moment to arrive. In my recent message and again here, I reiterate that hope is possible amid this crisis:

At times a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis doesn't seem possible, yet as Christians we believe that it is The psalmist assures us that God "makes wars cease to the end of the earth" (Psalm 46:9) At times it seems that there is nothing we can do, yet through baptism God calls us to be peacemakers We live out this calling in many ways, including through prayer, advocacy and accompaniment. Thanks to the faithful, generous people of the ELCA, Lutheran Disaster Response has a history of walking alongside and supporting our partners. Gifts to “Middle East Crisis” will be used to continue addressing humanitarian needs in the region

With gratitude for your prayers and support,

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton

Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
