Wonderful Winter We are almost through 2020! As in summer and fall seasons, many of our organized sports classes have been canceled this winter. As we await more information and direction from public health officials on how to safely resume youth sports, we do still have some fun offerings for everyone in the family. Music & Movement for ages 3–10 encourages creative and emotional expression through movement and dance. And Operation Reindeer will have you in the holiday spirit in no time. This socially distanced, geocaching-style scavenger hunt includes cookies, cocoa, a safe visit with Santa Claus, and lots of holiday fun. Things look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun, enjoy some colder weather, and finish out the year with gratitude and enthusiasm.

On the Cover! The cover features our Tiny Tots classes and all the fun that’s had while spending time with friends, learning numbers and letters, and singing songs. There are still spaces avilable. If you have a tiny tot at home, don’t miss this program. More info on page 9.

COVID Protocols Redding Recreation’s first priority is to make sure our community is safe while enjoying the camps and classes we have to offer. City staff works closely with state and local health officials to make sure we comply with the latest guidelines and best practices to help curb the spread of covid-19. Below you will find what you can expect when attending a Redding Recreation program. However, based on the type, location, and age group of the program or event, some guidelines may be modified or adjusted to comply with health regulations. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work to allow for the best possible experience under these circumstances.

Face Coverings Face coverings are required for all individuals ages 9 and up inside public spaces. During any outdoor activity where 6 feet of physical space cannot be maintained, face masks are also required. Face covering policies may differ for specific classes if health guidelines specify.

Physical Space We know keeping physical space is hard. Especially when your friends and loved ones are near. We are asking all patrons to do their best to keep 6 feet of physical space between themselves and others while inside our facilities and participating in activities. Based on the type of activity, less spectators may be allowed. If spectators are allowed, please maintain adequate distance while watching. Based on the current covid-tier, some changes in physical space protocols may be required.

Sanitation All staff have been trained in proper sanitation techniques. All facilities are throughly cleaned before and after each use, and sanitation procedures are followed during each activity.

Health Checks Participants of any program are asked before entering indoor facilities if they have been experiencing any symptoms of covid-19. If the answer is yes, the participant will be asked not to join the program. Temperature checks are required for all participants before entering a program or activity.

Facility Rentals At this time, facility rentals are limited to events that can comply with current health regulations on attendee numbers, physical distancing and face mask requirements. Our facilities are required to comply and therefore will not be permitted to rent to any event that may not meet local and state health requirements.

Please Remember: • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds or more. • Do not join any activity if you or your child are not feeling well. • Respectfully maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and others at all times. • Wear a face covering at all times indoors & when social distancing cannot be maintained outdoors.

Staff utilize an evidencebased curriculum from the One Circle Foundation called, Standing Together: A Journey into Respect which utilizes engaging ways to address common themes which pre-teens and early adolescents encounter, including breaking down social-cultural barriers, motives and actions around put-downs, knowing their personal rights, defining assumptions about male power, respecting others’ physical boundaries, understanding and using the energy of strong emotions, and standing up for each other in community.

Empowering Young Women Ages 8–12 Positively Girls Club is using the Girls with Ideas evidence-based curriculum. In this session, girls will learn what it means to find their voice and leadership style while also learning what other young women around the world are doing to impact their communities. Once the girls gain confidence in their own leadership styles and gifts, the next session, the girls will get to formulate ideas, work together to compile or tweak ideas, and then they will brainstorm on how to implement them and vote on final projects. The girls will come up with ideas focused on business, community, and the environment. Girls will then be split up into groups to decide on an idea for each subject and implement it.

King’s Brotherhood Council Positive Mentorship Ages 13–18 A staff mentor will guide young men further into a holistic process of growth and transformation that includes four areas of human development: emotional/spiritual, psychological, social, and intellectual. The journey begins by exploring young men’s challenges, strengths, and coping strategies formed after a premature loss of love and protection. Then council members are guided through a process to rediscover a sustaining internal resource of protection, security, and belonging. The journey continues to build upon individual and collective resources to reclaim or create dreams, develop goals, increase social and cooperative skills, and choose and apply transformative behaviors in their relationships and activities in order to overcome barriers and create lives of contribution, meaning, and connection.

Kids Who Build is a technology-focused class that allows youth to learn introductory skills in the cyber world while being in an inclusive environment that encourages problem-solving skills, creativity, and critical thinking. Participants will be learning about stop motion animation which is a great way to encourage s.t.e.a.m. concepts with children. Stop motion movie making provides children with a fun combination of storytelling and technology use. Stop motion is a filming technique where pictures are taken of objects (people, clay figurines, toys, etc.) that are moved in small increments. When the pictures are put together, it makes the objects appear to be moving (Isle of Dogs and Coraline are famous examples of this technique). To make these movies, we use flip books, iPhones/iPads, and free apps called Stop Motion Studio.

Redding Pickleball Expansion Project Update In 2018 the Redding Pickleball Group reached out to the City of Redding for help in constructing new, permanent pickleball courts to accommodate the fastest growing sport in the nation and the local groups weekly game play. The City agreed with the need and endorsed the project with the understanding that the costs to build the project would be funded by a combination of private and corporate donations, grants, and fundraisers.

Redding Pickleball Group 2018

For those unfamiliar with Pickleball, it is a court game played with a paddle, wiffle ball, and a net. It is a combination of badminton, tennis, and ping pong and is a lot of fun! The Redding Pickleball Group plays Monday through Saturday from 8-11am and welcomes any new players to stop by and join the fun.

Pickleball Court Rendering 2018

Project wSummary Construct six new permanent Pickleball courts to accommodate almost 300 members of the Redding Pickleball Group for weekly play. The project is supported by City of Redding Parks and Recreation Department and the Redding Parks and Trail Foundation. Pickleball Court Prep for Concrete 2020

Current Status Fundraising efforts were completed in late 2019 and construction was to begin in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic slowed the progress of construction dramatically. In late 2020 courts were stripped, prepped and concrete was poured.

Next Steps Pickleball Court Concrete poured 2020

Once concrete cures and weather conditions allow, courts will be painted and permanent nets will be installed. Then Redding Pickleball Courts will be ready for official play!

you help Bill & Drake get to the Sacramento River? Bill starts BILL & DRAKE’S Can in your household drainpipe, while Drake starts outside in the

EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

BILL

Storm Drain. Who do you think will come out cleaner?

Start here!

DRAINPIPE

The Lateral Drainpipe carries wastewater from your house to the Sanitary Sewers under our city’s streets.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

After reaching the Wastewater Treatment Plant, sewage is screened for solids and sent to a clarifier where it is filtered out.

AEROBIC AERATION BASIN

Here, bacteria is used to remove toxic chemicals from the water. It is then filtered once again and treated with chlorine to kill harmful bacteria.

OUTFALL PIPELINE

Finally, the clean water is dechlorinated and sent back into the Sacramento River.

28

DRAKE

The water that passes through Storm Drains is not treated, and is directly channeled to the Sacramento River. STORM DRAIN

Trash that enters the Storm Drain pollutes the Sacramento River. CIGARETTE BUTTS

A plastic bottle left on the ground can easily be swept into the Storm Drain during a storm. PLASTIC BOTTLE

Detergents, like car soap, can dangerously run from your driveway into the Sac. River.
