Fuel switching is all about changing from a less-sustainable resource to a more sustainable resource. In this activity, we’ll use the sun to cook s’mores in a solar oven! No wood, natural gas, or electricity!
A solar oven is a box that traps some of the sun’s energy to make the air inside the box hotter than the air outside the box.
• A cardboard box with attached lid, like a shoe box or pizza box. Lid should have flaps so that the box can be closed tightly.
• Aluminum foil
• Clear plastic wrap
• Glue stick
• Tape (transparent tape or any tape you have)
• Stick (about 1 foot long) to prop open reflector flap (Use a Skewer, ruler, or whatever you have.)
• Ruler or straight-edge
• Box cutter or X-acto knife (with adult help, please!)
• Pie tin or paper plate
• S,more Ingredients: graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows
Using the straight edge as a guide, cut a three sided flap out of the top of the box, leaving at least a 1-inch border around the 3 sides.
Cover the bottom (inside) of the flap with aluminum foil, spreading a coat of glue from the glue stick onto the cardboard first and making the foil as smooth as possible. Then line the inside of the box with aluminum foil, again gluing it down to make it as smooth as possible.
Tape two layers of plastic wrap across the opening you cut in the lid-one layer on the top and one layer on the inside of the lid.
Set the oven in the direct sun when the outdoor temperature is at least 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Prop the flap open to reflect the light into the box. You will probably have to tape the prop in place. Preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes.
Put half a graham cracker topped with a marshmallow onto your pie tin or paper plate and place it in your oven. Make sure to close the lid tightly, and keep the flap propped up so that light is reflecting into your oven. Your marshmallow will take about 30-60 minutes to get squishy. Once your marshmallow is squishy, add the chocolate on top, and cook for a few more minutes.

There are still great options for 2022 Summer Camps (see pp. 17–21), but a few of our most popular camps are already full; including Camp Eureka, Camp Caldwell, Beach Buddies, and Farm Camp. So what should you do if the camp you want is full? Join the waitlist! Every week, if campers can’t attend a session, Redding Recreation staff will email the waitlist starting at the top of the list and moving toward the bottom. If you receive an email, you will have 24 hours to respond and register. If we need to fill the spot quickly, we will call the waitlist. Look for an email or phone call and respond as quickly as possible. The first parent to respond, secures the spot.
“One of the reasons that our camps fill quickly, is we keep a 1 to 12 counselor to camper ratio,” says Redding Recreation Superintendent Teresa Urricelqui. “This allows us to engage in really fun activities and field trips with the campers while making sure there is enough supervision.”
The small camp size, weekly field trips, and swimming days at the Redding Aquatic Center are just a few of the reasons Redding Recreation has an excellent reputation in the community for running quality Summer Camps. “Parents need affordable, reliable, and enjoyable Summer Camp options for kids that aren’t just a daycare during the summer,” says Teresa. “We work hard to provide a great community resource for parents that is also a fun and educational experience for kids. It’s one of the reasons we have so many parents return year after year and register early for our Summer Camps.”
For parents who might have missed Summer Camps registration for this year, mark your calendars for February 2023. Summer Camp registration opens in early winter with Farm Camp registration opening in early April. It might seem like it's too early to think about summer, but believe it or not, Redding Recreation begins gearing up for summer in January.
Teresa’s best advice? Register early. The next best thing to do is to join the waitlist. For 2022, there are still some great camp options. Check out reddingrecreation.org for the latest camp offerings.
Happy summer, everyone!
What should I do if the Summer Camp I want to register for is already full?

Swim lessons taken by class. Spring lessons are four 30-minute lessons completed M–Th in one week. Summer lessons are comprised of eight 30-minute lessons completed M–Th over the course of 2 weeks. Sign up for as many sessions as you’d like! Our goal is to get your swimmer comfortable & skilled in and around the water.
Swim lessons 4 times a week might be too taxing on the littlest swimmers, so we have created a special 2/Week Option for Parent & Me age groups in the summer only! You still get eight 30-minute classes, but they happen twice a week over the course of 4 weeks instead of over 2 weeks like regular classes.
You might want to sign up for Private swim lessons to give you or your swimmer more individual attention. We have private lessons available individually or private lesson packages, which include 4 private lessons that take place in a one week session. Lessons are for all ages, toddlers to adults!
Individual Private Lessons
Private: $25/student/half-hour
Semi-Private: $20/two students/half-hour; Semi-Private lessons are for 2 students who will be signed up together and are at a similar skill level. Great for siblings & friends.
Private: $82/four 1-on-1 private swim lessons
Semi-Private: $124/four 2-on-1 private swim lessons for students who will be signed up together and are at a similar skill level. Great for siblings & friends.
Step 1. Choose an age
Swim lessons are divided first by age group. The chart on page 42 breaks the groups into Parent & Me, Preschool & School Age. Aqua Athletes are school-age students who are more confident in the water and are ready for more of a challenge. You will select your swim lessons from age group first.
After age, swim lessons are divided by skill & confidence level. If your child is timid around the water, start at the very beginning of the lesson tier and move your way up during the season. If your child is confident, likes the water, and likes putting their face in the water, you can decide which skill level to start with. It is always recommended to start low and grow into the appropriate level.
Step 3.
Swim lessons are divided into sessions: Spring & Summer. Choose the week your child can attend (session), and select the time slot you can commit to that week. Swim lessons will be held at the same time each day.
Search & register online for swim lessons. These will be organized by age group and skill level (fish name). You can also register using the course codes on pages 44-45.
To schedule private lessons, call the Recreation Office at 225.4095 or the Redding Aquatic Center (after June 10) at 245.7247
Follow these 4 simple steps to determine what swim lesson class is best for your swimmer.
