Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 9 | 31 March 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Term 1 has been jam-packed in every aspect of school life. The summer sports program, the many cultural activities, and the academies that have been running have all created exceptional opportunities for involvement, extension, and enrichment. I hope all students have pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and tried exciting and diverse activities to enhance their school experience. Having fun with your fellow students outside of the classroom in whatever field creates a fulfilling school experience.
There was no better example of this than the school musical, Footloose. Audiences were amazed by yet another fantastic production at NIDA. The dancing, singing, performing, costumes, and props were excellent. The fun that everyone in the cast had was evident from the energy and enthusiasm with which they performed. One must be reminded that these are school students on stage, not professionals - such was the show's standard. The backstage crew and band had as much fun while contributing hugely to the show's success. Thank you to all the students involved for all the hard work and dedication that went into the three performances. You deserved the standing ovation.
My thanks to the team of teachers for creating this fantastic opportunity for our students to shine: Mr. and Mrs. Bortolotti, Ms. Knight, Mr. Montgomery, and Mr. Hattingh.
A Footloose page is ahead.
Last week the Year 10 Drama students completed their Commedia Dell'Arte performances, creating outstanding self-devised work. Commedia dell'Arte, which translates as "professional theatre," began in Italy in the early 16th Century and spread throughout Europe, with lasting influence on Shakespeare, Molière, opera, vaudeville, contemporary musical theatre, television sit-coms, and improv comedy. The style of Commedia is characterised by its use of half masks, improvisation, physical comedy, and recognizable character types—young lovers, wily servants, greedy older men, know-it-all professors, and
boasting heroes. The students proved that Commedia is alive and well in our Contemporary world, producing some hilariously entertaining performances. Mr. Hodgson and Mr. Montgomery are exceptionally proud of the work their students have created.
Additional images are further into the newsletter.
Year 10 Art students followed this up with a two-day Art Retreat to the Quarantine Station at Manly. The weekend was jam-packed, full of activities, a history tour, a ghost tour, and stories of the characters who lived across the site. Seven art-making workshops entailed drawing, watercolour, illustration, photography with digital editing and post-production, and book and zine making. The students have been enriched with skills and techniques they will draw on throughout Year 10 and Year 11 and HSC in Visual Arts. All had a spectacularly fun weekend.
Please see a collection of artwork produced by the participants under the Art banner.
Our Year 9 Leadership group attended the Youth Leadership Conference at the ICC in Darling Harbour. Thousands of student leaders from across Sydney gathered to hear inspirational young leaders share their stories of resilience and courage.
The speakers inspired our students to be better leaders and gained skills to run successful events and lead others with integrity and passion.
Student achievements this week include:
Jasper Hartmann’s sculpture, “Plastic or Prey,” was second overall in the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival Literary Art Prize and won the people’s choice award. His work is being displayed at the National Maritime Museum. Congratulations Jasper!
The Debating Teams came up against Sydney Girls last Friday, with the Year 9 and 10 teams winning their debates. Their arguments that, “Those celebrities should not openly support individual politicians or political parties (e.g., via interviews or social media platforms” and “In recently post-conflict states that technocrats should govern the state for the first five years,” respectively swayed the decision of the judges their way. Congratulations to Emma Bradburn, Maddie Wenmohs, Evan Zhu, Katherine Seki of Year 9, Andrew Yu, William Barouch, and Maddie McIntyre of Year 10.
Reddam 1sts Boys Basketball Team played a great game on Wednesday night in the Final of the CDSSA Boys championships against Emmanuel College. A packed gymnasium brought out the best in both teams. Being the last match for our Year 12s, the lads gave it their best. Emmanuel led by 9 points at one stage, and Reddam dug deep to claw their way back into the game and then extended the lead to 12 points. We thought the Championship was ours, but the opposition had different plans. A three-pointer on the final siren saw the match go to overtime. Unfortunately, we did not play our best in this period and went down 92 - 96.
While our boys were shattered, we will live to fight on, and the team's younger members will make amends for this loss next year.
Congratulations to our 1st Grade Girls Water Polo Team on a wonderful season. Playing in the PLC Pymble competition, the team went through the season undefeated.
Next week is the last week of Term 1, and school will close for the holidays on Thursday, 6th April, at 1:00 pm.
We will post the Term 1 reports for Years 7 - 11 in the parent lounge by Tuesday, 11th April. Have a great weekend and last week of the term.

To all Years 8 and 9 Drama Students,

Not an everyday occurrence!
Middle School Drama Production 2023
The production is opened to students in Years 8-9 and will be presented in Term 4, Week 2, October 18-20th at the NEW Bondi Pavilion Theatre, Bondi Beach.

Instrumental Competition 2023
Our 2023 Instrumental Competition entries are open. Of course, very few students would have a piece ready this early in the year, so this announcement serves as motivation and planning assistance for preparing an entry by the May deadline. All students are encouraged to take the term and school holidays to work on the piece of their choice, with their teachers, and submit an entry into this online competition. All students receive written feedback, as well as RHAP points. We look forward to watching and celebrating our students' work, and you can enter as well as read more at this link: REGISTRATION

SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
MySydney Entry & Scholarship Scheme
The E12 Early Offer and Scholarship Scheme is being discontinued as the University has introduced MySydney. Similarly to E12, MySydney provides entry at a reduced ATAR, yet a more generous scholarship of $8500 per year to students residing in a low socioeconomic area*. MySydney does not require a written application and eligible students will be identified automatically via UAC.
*Residing at the time of UAC application in an area listed in the bottom 25% of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA), Index of Education and Occupation.
Scholarships
The decision was made to discontinue the Sydney Scholars Award. With such a large volume of applications each year, far outweighing the number of Awards available to students, it was decided it was not fair for students to be spending so much time on their applications as such a crucial time of year.
In preparation for the change, the Chancellor’s Award was recently expanded to include students who received a 99.90 ATAR (previously awarded to 99.95 only). This cohort accounted for a large number of the Sydney Scholars Awards historically given to students. Preliminary 2023 offer and enrolment numbers also show that more students who achieved an ATAR of 95.00+ received the University’s new MySydney Scholarship, than those who received the Sydney Scholars Award.
There continues to be many academic merit scholarships available at a faculty level which we encourage students to apply for. The scholarships search tool will help students discover the range of scholarships that they may be eligible for.

Educational Access Scheme
There are several changes to EAS this year:
The six-month rule has been removed. Applications will be assessed for disadvantages that have occurred for any length of time up until 30 September of the year they complete Year 12.
Disadvantage codes F01K and F01S, which allowed students to claim financial disadvantage based on COVID-19 government payments, have been removed.
There is a new SEIFA disadvantage code, AG02, which works in the same way as AG01 but draws on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Index of Education and Occupation instead of the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Advantage and Disadvantage. The day after they submit their application, students identified as meeting the criteria for either of these disadvantages will be notified that UAC has automatically created an EAS application for them.
The student's document cover sheet will include a checklist to help them understand what they need to provide.
The Educational Impact Statement will require schools to answer fewer questions, making it a quicker and easier process for you.
UAC - will also host another online Year 12 Conference. Last year, 3,500 students and parents logged in to watch, making it the biggest UAC Digital event to date. When: 26 April @ 6pm.

LAT program for those interested in studying Law at UNSW next year:
We have an exciting opportunity for your students interested in studying law at UNSW! As you may already know, the Law Admission Test (LAT) is a crucial step towards gaining admission into law at UNSW. That's where LAT Plus comes in. Our Law Admission Test (LAT) Plus Accelerator Program is designed to help students develop essential skills required to succeed in the LAT. The LAT Plus Accelerator equips students with the tools, advice, and confidence to succeed in the LAT.
The LAT Plus Accelerator is an interactive program which helps students develop strategies for deconstructing questions, solidify critical thinking skills, and hone persuasive writing abilities. We also provide strategies to succeed in the LAT and empower students to achieve their full potential.
We offer students an immersive experience where they will have the opportunity to ask live questions, partake in interactive exercises, complete practice papers, and receive live feedback during the Program. In addition, we offer further practice papers and complementary written feedback to help students continue refining their skills following the completion of the program. If interested see Ms Jones for more details.
Coming up in April, we have our Year 10 & 11 Experience Days, featuring three jam-packed days of fun, including workshops and a mini-Open Day. Later in the month, we'll be hosting our online Arts, Design and Architecture Information Evening, where you can learn more about our redesigned programs. For female students interested in business, we'll also be running the Capital W High School Workshop Founded by UNSW Co-op students as a grassroots approach to bridging the gap between university and the corporate world, this event is a great opportunity for female students to explore a career in business.
