Good evening and thank you for joining us to celebrate and support the mission of the American Red Cross.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff of the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, it is our honor and pleasure to welcome you to our 2024 Red & White Ball: A Salute to Service and Valor. We extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to our Ball Co-Chairs, Connie Anne Harris and Lauren E. Walsh, who, along with the entire Ball committee, made this night possible.
With a spotlight on our organization’s longstanding commitment to servicemembers which dates to the Civil War when American Red Cross founder Clara Barton first assisted wounded soldiers on the battlefield tonight’s event is a celebration of this legacy, our humanitarian mission and those who make this work possible.
Our esteemed honorees tonight all embody the noble principles of duty and service, an ethos shared by our volunteers who carry out our lifesaving and lifechanging work each day and those who provide the funds that allow us to keep helping.
To our Exceptional Service Honoree Lieutenant General Steven W. Gilland, Humanitarian Honoree Suzanne Packer and Lifetime Service Honoree Chief James J. Heavey, we say THANK YOU for your service and for the example you set for all of us.
A sincere and gracious thank you to all who are part of this night from our underwriters and sponsors, journal advertisers, auction donors and those who purchased tickets and tables, to the teams of vendors, volunteers and staff who have worked tirelessly over the past nine months to bring tonight’s event to reality.
In the room tonight are some incredible community partners, elected officials, friends and supporters. Together, you work alongside us and have done so for decades. We offer our deepest gratitude for your support, and we are honored to celebrate with you. Each one of you plays a significant role in supporting the mission of the American Red Cross, alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. From responding to home fires, to assisting our military, to deploying to large disasters near and far, trained dedicated Red Crossers are available 24/7/365 to help our neighbors at their greatest time of need. Together we bring comfort and provide financial assistance and mental health support when it is needed most.
Thank you, again, for joining us and we wish you a fun and inspiring evening.
Cheers, Stephanie

American Red Cross,
Tonight, we honor the heroes in our community. Heroes like James Heavey who have overcome tremendous obstacles to help others in his community. James Heavey has had many achievements in his career, such as serving during 9/11 and graduating the FBI National Academy. He attended Northeastern University in Boston and was part of their ROTC program. After graduation, he joined the Greenwich Police Department , and has been Chief for the past twelve years.
Before commissioning with the United States Army Reserve, James served as a military police officer. During his service, he fought in Desert Storm and after 9/11, served as a battalion operations officer supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. His relationship with the Red Cross spans 50 years while holding many positions. The relationship first began when he was just 14 years old, taking the Advanced First Aid course they offered. When he was 17, Heavey took on his first role at the Red Cross as First Officer of Red Cross Explorer Post 30 and recently in 2023, James donated his 100th pint of blood to the Red Cross at the thirteenth annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. The Red Cross has awarded him with the Exceptional Volunteer Service Award, Outstanding Volunteer, and the Outstanding Person Action Award (for lifesaving) twice.
James has been married to his wife, Kia, for almost 28 years and has two beautiful children. James Heavey has had an extraordinary career and has been serving his community and will continue to have great impacts on Greenwich and the people who live here.
Sincerely,

Dear Friends,
Congratulations to the American Red Cross on its Red & White Ball: A Night Under the Stars and Stripes. The Red Cross continues to be a crucial lifeline to so many in crisis, which I have seen personally in my Assembly District. I am incredibly grateful to this organization and all the many workers and volunteers who have made such an impact on the lives of so many. In recognition of the essential humanitarian worked performed by the American Red Cross for well over a century, it is my privilege to pay tribute both to the key role played by this organization in times of crisis, and to this year’s outstanding Red and White Ball honorees.
Each committed to relieving human suffering, they have taken different paths to the same goal. From Lieutenant General Steven W. Gilland’s illustrious military career in conflict zones around the world to Police Chief James J. Heavey’s public service both in the military and in Greenwich, Connecticut to Suzanne Packer’s decades of volunteer initiative and philanthropy, all show leadership and outstanding concern for others.
Bravo to this trio for exemplifying so well the mission and credo of the American Red Cross. And kudos and thanks to the Red Cross for carrying out this mission so successfully.
Sincerely,
