Accepted by Daniel de Weldon
Felix de Weldon was an Austrian-American sculptor renowned for his significant contributions to the field of sculpture, particularly in the realm of public monuments. Born on April 12, 1907, in Vienna, Austria, de Weldon demonstrated an early talent for art that led him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later at Oxford University completing his PhD. In 1939, he immigrated to Canada as a war refugee escaping Nazi occupied Austria. De Weldon then became a United States citizen after completing military service in the U.S. Navy, where he quickly made a name for himself as a Naval artist with his ability to blend academic traditions with a modern sensibility. His most recognizable work is the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial, commonly known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, which commemorates the U.S. Marines who fought in World War II.
In addition to his celebrated works, de Weldon created a variety of other important sculptures, including a significant piece dedicated to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross Memorial, located in Washington, D.C., serves as a tribute to the selfless service and humanitarian efforts of the organization during times of war and peace. Completed in 1959, the memorial captures the essence of compassion and sacrifice through its dynamic composition and attention to detail. De Weldon’s skillful portrayal of nursing figures and the wounded, surrounded by symbols of hope and healing, highlights the vital role of the Red Cross in providing aid to those in need.
Throughout his career, de Weldon was dedicated to creating art that inspired and uplifted the human spirit. His works not only reflect his artistic t alent but also embody the historical narratives and values of the generations they represent. Operating out of his studios in Newport, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C., he continued to create significant pieces until his later years, leaving behind a legacy that remains influential in the world of public art. Felix de Weldon passed away on June 3, 2003, but his contributions, particularly through works like the Red Cross Memorial, continue to resonate and remind us of the importance of humanitarian efforts in society.
Currently, Felix de Weldon’s son, Daniel Felix de Weldon, is producing his bio-pic screenplay titled “Monumental,” a Broadway Musical feature film in collaboration with George Schlatter Productions, slated for release in 2026 with Emmy Awardwinning producer Maria S. Schlatter.

Congratulations to everyone involved with tonight’s American Red Cross Red & White Ball : A Salute to Service as you celebrate the hard work of the Metro New York Chapter and everything that the Red Cross does throughout the year from helping with response to a disaster to holding life-saving blood drives.
The American Red Cross has always been there for people when they need them in the direst of circumstances and that would not be possible without all the hard work of everyone at the Red Cross and the support that this vital organization received from the community.
I want to personally congratulate the honorees tonight at the 2025 American Red Cross Red and White Ball. It is wonderful to see the service of U.S. Army Lt. Col. Matthew M. Barack be honored with the Exceptional Service Award. This is yet another prestigious honor earned through his distinguished work.
Charles Goldstuck is highly deserving as well of the Humanitarian Award for all he has done and I am pleased to see the hard work of Brescome Barton and the Magliocco Family result in them receiving the Corporate Leadership Award. And everything I have read about Felix de Weldon makes it clear he is a fitting posthumous recipient of the Vanguard Award.
And of course, we are all pleased here in Greenwich to see Ross Ogden’s 65 years of continuous service as an American Red Cross volunteer be recognized. He is a truly deserving recipient of the Lifetime Service Award for his tireless dedication to the Red Cross.
The Red & White Ball is a tremendous event every year that does so much to support the American Red Cross and highlight its work responding to disasters and helping people in need. I want to thank event co-chairs Sophie Bosch de Hood, William Hood and Lauren E. Walsh for all they did putting this event together.
Warmest regards
Lauren Rabin Selectwoman Town of Greenwich
