This Design An Ad special section represents a special partnership between area school systems, the business community and the Record-Journal. Students in grades four through eight participated in this program. Area businesses purchased advertising space in this section. The businesses provided information on their product or service to the schools, and the ads were then designed by students from schools in Meriden, Wallingford and Southington. Each participating class was responsible for designing ads for one business. Teachers were given information about that business, including its name, address and phone number. Students were given that information and a template on which to create an ad for the business. Once the teacher collected all of the finished ads, a panel of judges looked at all of the submitted work. One ad was chosen to represent each business. The ads featured in this section were chosen as the best for the business. All ads were judged on originality, creativity and accuracy. The ads chosen for publication were picked from a field of thousands of entries. They represent hard work on the part of students and teachers. The ads chosen to appear in this section were part of a second judging. From each grade level, judges chose first, second and third place award winning ads, and in some cases, honorable mentions. The students whose work was given the greater distinction of being awarded a first, second, third or honorable mention will be recognized at a special reception to be held in their honor. This project is part of the Record-Journal Newspaper In Education program. Work done by students for this project represented an integrated learning activity incorporating both state and national standards.
