The New Britain Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 75th season with an exciting mainstage concert at CCSU’s Welte Hall on Nov. 5. The NBSO was founded in 1948 by members of the music department at CCSU with a mission to bring classical music of the highest caliber to New Britain and the surrounding communities. Maestro Toshi Shimada has been the Conductor and Music Director since 2019, and currently conduct’s both the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes.

And we think the name captures what we are trying to do perfectly.” The business has just finished up its second annual charity raffle to benefit Prudence Crandall, who for over 45 years has been a leader in the state’s efforts to reduce the impact of domestic violence in the lives of victims and their children. A spokesman for Prudence Crandell praised Color Platform saying that, without private fundraisers like those run by the business, the non-profit would have trouble funding all of its programs. “We have both had trouble with domestic violence and it is something near to our hear,” Johnson said. “So, this seemed like a natural for the beneficiary of the fundraiser that we decided to put on. We started last year and other businesses came out and donated either services or prizes to their businesses and were able to get seen at the night of the raffle. It was a win -win for them as well because some of them are (selling through) Etsy and work out of their house but now they get to be seen by people in person. The first event was bigger and better than we thought and this year we
look like we are going to go over $4,000, which is $1,000 over what we did last year.” Donations were still coming in and this will not be the last of the charity of educational events The Color Platforms runs. “We started this in 2020 and brought our own clientele but it has grown so much since we’ve been here,” Frank said. “We both needed to grow past chair rentals and decided to go into business together and we were lucky to get this spot. We have been very supported by the owners Mark Lovely and Tony Valenti from the start. There was a stall where we had to wait, but they assured us everything was going to be ok. We have the two of us and we have two newer stylists Kacie Devoe and Jessica Ingenito, who just got licensed – were so proud of her. “We love art and we are known for our color so we will get stylists from other salons come in and see what we are doing for color and new things. That makes us very gratifying for us,” she added. The owners said the next big thing will be coming around Thanksgiving. BERLIN John Masserio, 81, of Weeki Wachee, FL, formerly of Berlin, CT, passed away unexpectedly on October 3, 2023. John was the beloved husband of 50 years to Laraine (Whitmore) Masserio. John was born in New Britain, CT, on September 24, 1942 to the late John C. Massirio and Dorothy (Zavarella) Massirio. John is survived by his 7 children: Ed Woodward and his wife Candy of Berlin, CT, Laurie Fargione of Berlin, CT, Karleen Giarratana and her husband Salvatore of Farmington, CT, Dorene Masserio-Beach and her husband John of Berlin, CT, Larry Woodward of Waterbury, CT, John D. Masserio, Jr., of New Britain, CT and Lisa Masserio of Brooksville, FL. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his sisters Carol Sarnowski and her husband Richard of Boca Raton, FL and June Hartunian and her husband Ronald of Port St. Lucie, FL. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John graduated from New Britain High School. While in high school, his love for 55 Chevys prompted him to join the car club. He also
dedicated himself to service by achieving the honor of Eagle Scout - an honor he was very proud of and shared fondly with his grandsons. Shortly after graduating from high school, he worked for a period of time at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft before embarking on a successful career of 40 years with General Equities, Inc., in Berlin, CT. John served as Executive Vice President and handled details related to building and managing convenience stores and gas stations for the company in CT, FL, MA, NY, NJ, and PA. John retired from his dedicated career in December 2008. Shortly after his retirement, he and Laraine moved to Weeki Wachee, FL. John was always there to lend a helping hand or ear and offer a suggestion or resolution to whomever called on
him for counsel. He cared deeply for family and enjoyed family gatherings. He enjoyed home-cooked family meals. He was a spectator of all sports that his children and grandchildren enjoyed playing. John loved taking his wife on cruises and traveling in his RV. Visiting Fort Wilderness and Disney became an annual trip that he enjoyed for many years. John picked up his need - and skills - in fixing and improving upon household items and making household repairs from his father John. His generosity of spirit shined when meeting new acquaintances and keeping up with friends and extended family. John’s kind and radiant smile could light up any room and make people feel at ease in an instant. He was truly the heart and strength of his family. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, October 17, 2023. Entombment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to John D. Obituaries Rev. Allen M. Humes KEENE, NH - The Reverend Allen M. Humes, 89, of Keene, NH, passed on to new adventures on October 4, 2023. He was the son of E. Milton and Edith Humes of West Hartford, CT, and the husband of Rosalind (Williams) Humes. After graduating from Hall High School in West Hartford, Allen earned his B.A. degree from Earlham College in Richmond, IN, and his B.D. from Hartford Theological Seminary. Allen was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1959 which began a rich and fulfilling ministry. Allen first served as the Minister of Christian Education at the First Congregational Church of Glastonbury, CT, before being called to the First Congregational Church in Deep River, CT, where he enjoyed a seventeen-year pastorate. In 1979 he was called to the historic Kensington Congregational Church in Kensington, CT, where he was blessed with another seventeen-year pastorate and was named Pastor Emeritus upon his retirement. After moving to Winchester, NH, Allen continued to serve as interim or guest pastor in several area churches. In 2019, Allen and Roz moved to Hillside (Covenant) Village in Keene, NH, while still enjoying the winter months in North Port, FL. Allen was always a champion for social justice and peace, participating in the 1963 March on Washington and
establishing sister-church relationships with the Pan de Vida congregation in El Salvador and the Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church in New Britain, CT. He also loved the adventure of travel, touching all 50 states. In retirement, while serving as a Protestant Minister onboard Holland America Cruise Lines, he felt fortunate to travel the world, visiting each continent at least twice. His other joys in life included salt-water fishing, vegetable gardening, playing cards, and rooting for his beloved Boston Red Sox and UCONN Women Huskies basketball teams, but above all he loved connecting with people. Allen is survived by his loving wife Roz; three children, Gary Humes and his wife Diana of Corning, NY; Brian Humes and his wife Cori of Kensington, CT; and Wendy (Humes) Mill and her husband Donald of Old Saybrook, CT. He also leaves four grandchildren, Kelly (Humes) Nanavati and
her husband Ankit of Greensboro, NC; Steven Humes and his wife Colleen of Haddon Heights, NJ; Kathryn Mill and Andrew Mill of Montreal, Canada, as well as great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and generations of extended family who were all very dear to him. Allen was predeceased by his parents and only sibling, Shirley (Humes) Benton of Richmond, IN. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kensington Congregational Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023. A Service of Christian Committal will be held at the Deep River Congregational Church at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2023, which will precede his burial at the Deep River Congregational Church Cemetery.
