Discover New Ways to Learn and Play! Dear Rec & Ed Community, Hundreds of kids, parents and friends participated in Rick’s Run for Kids, Rec & Ed’s first ever 5K run/ walk, on November 15. The morning felt like a giant family reunion, as AAPS staff members, community members and Rick’s extended family and friends came together to honor Rick Dekeon’s legacy. Rick was a beloved teacher at Northside Elementary, a popular Rec & Ed coach and a member of the Recreation Advisory Commission. His life’s work – to encourage all kids to be physically active – was at the heart of the event. All registration fees benefited Rec & Ed’s Youth Scholarship Program, raising over $6,000 for children in need. Please see the back inside cover for event photos and more information about Rick’s Run for Kids.

Yoga classes are for adult men and women. Yoga helps you become more aware of your body's posture, alignment and patterns of movement and it makes the body more flexible. One of the foremost reasons why people want to start the practice of yoga is that it helps you relax even in the midst of a stress stricken environment. Attend a yoga class to feel fitter and be more energetic, happier and peaceful. It is recommended that you have permission from your physician to do yoga if you are pregnant or have potential health conditions, as a precaution to starting an exercise regimen.

FEE: $135 IT’S ELEMENTAL Learn about the building blocks of matter! Construct models of atoms to learn about the smallest pieces of matter. Become an “atom” to learn how atoms group to form molecules and get acquainted with some of the most common molecules in our universe! COLORFUL CONCOCTIONS Mix colors, create a colorful critter and learn how important color can be! Explore primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Find out how chemists use color to learn about the world while making a colorful critter to take home. REACTIONS IN ACTION See how matter reacts as you mix things together! Explore why things bubble, glow, and heat up as you mix creative concoctions with everyday chemicals. IT ALL MATTERS Solids, liquids and gases – oh, my! Explore the states of matter and learn how matter can transition between states. Games, hands-on activities, and demos illustrate these key properties of matter. BUBBLES Experiment with bubbling reactions and your own bubble creations. Baking soda and vinegar are the stars and dish soap and glycerin are supporting actors as you learn about liquids, gases, surface tension and more. SLIME Take all you know about matter, reactions, and molecules and put it together in a spectacular slimy finale. Make two types of oozing, sticky slime and take home recipes to make more later!

Think outside the box! Challenge your minds! Be prepared for the world of technology! Mythbusters Jr. Explore science the way the Mythbusters do! The truth is, Mythbusters are a terrific example of the application of the scientific method. In this class, we think just like the Mythbusters do and work our way through epic scientific experiments debunking the myths that go along with them! It is going to be awesome! Finally here is a class where you get to debunk myths just like they do on the popular show Mythbusters.

Basic Electronics How did Ben Franklin figure out a way to harness electricity? By playing around with it! This class is more fun than playing with lightning. Students use electronic snap-on circuits to learn the basics of electricity, and then replicate some of the same experiments with plain wires and alligator clips. Under our well-grounded guidance, students build and learn about: series and parallel circuits, electronic devices that make ‘choices’, noise maker circuits, motion and light-activated alarm circuits and more.

Instructor: Brain Monkeys staff. 7 weeks. FEE: $145 TIME: 3:50 PM - 4:50 PM

Super Structures Do you like to build? Want to build bridges, super slingers and mousetrap-powered cars? In this course, students are given materials and a challenge to build an object such as a bridge or a slinger. Bend the rules, but don't break them! Students learn basic building skills and teamwork as they work together to accomplish each given challenge.

Robot Games Students are introduced to the basics of programming using the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics software and kit. Once we have established some of the fundamentals of programming, the games begin! Soccer, golf, baseball and possibly a little sumo battling take place in this class! This is a fun new twist on robotics that incorporates programming challenges that are great for beginners and experienced students.

Young students develop their higher level thinking skills playing with an easyto-use LEGO set featuring working motors and sensors. Students explore a series of cross-curricular, themebased activities that helps them acquire skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as language and literacy.

The Power of Drawing

No lessson is ever repeated!

FEE: $95 (5 weeks) $79 (*4 weeks)

The secret to our art program is that children already love to draw – so we just take their love a little further. Our 8 year curriculum and tiered methodology was created by a group of educators, designers, and fine artists. We know that learning to see and creating visual images is now recognized as essential to a child’s learning process and developing critical, cognitive brain-training skills. New this winter season. our students advance their color pencil techniques as they emulate master artist Pablo Picasso, complete a portrait of Canadian athlete Terry Fox and spend plenty of time being silly with a funny pterodactyl character drawing. Then on to a LEGO-inspired drawing, a “western portrait”, an historical-based drawing that documents the Op art movement and a composition featuring a detailed scorpion…. all providing fun, artistic challenges. In addition, an Anime Cartoon session is included. A ton of fun awaits budding artists as they “train their brain to see with the Power of Drawing!” Visit cogart-kb.com.
