Inspire your future maestro with a San Francisco Symphony concert. Invigorate your third-grade ukulele rocker with tickets to Jake Shimabukuro. By offering $10 student tickets with the purchase of a $20 adult ticket, UMS Kids Club makes it easier for families to enjoy the world’s best performing artists, right in their own backyard.

Kids Club is a great way to continue exposing our children to music. As they are performers themselves, having a frequent opportunity to see professionals perform gives them something to aspire to. Kids can see sports on TV or in person, and picture themselves in that role, but when it comes to music performance, live is pretty much the only way to have kids see something that they could picture themselves doing. Tai Chi & Telling Stories Darryl Mickens has been teaching Tai Chi in Ann Arbor for 18 years. However, it was more than 20 years ago while working as a Special Education teacher that Darryl dreamed of being an instructor. After 24 years of teaching, Darryl retired in 2012 and the next year obtained a Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor certification through the Tai Chi for Health Institute. It was at this time that Darryl began teaching for Community Education & Recreation. The next certification came in 2014 when Darryl received a Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance instructor certification. “It has been a joy to teach the Tai Chi for Arthritis class at Rec & Ed. The feedback from my students is always so positive.” The interest in professional storytelling began about the same time as Tai Chi. Darryl has always enjoyed telling stories to family and friends, but in 2002 decided the time had come to join the Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild. Throughout the years Darryl has had wonderful experiences as a storyteller and enjoys interpreting multicultural folktales, writing his own stories, and developing his personal stories. “My new Rec & Ed class is a Storytelling Workshop I hope everyone will enjoy!” Tai Chi for Arthritis with Darryl Mickens can be found on page 32 and the Storytelling Workshop can be found on page 10.

Rec & Ed Office will be closed for Winter Break December 19 - January 3, Monday, January 18 and Friday, March 25.

Ages 3-5 & an Adult. Math readiness is more than counting to 20 and knowing shapes. Math is estimating and measuring, sorting and classifying, putting items in order and predicting what comes next. We'll even collect and share data with bar graphs and pie charts. Our learning centers are revised each week, allowing children to experiment and practice their math readiness skills. Adults come away with new ideas to practice math skills in every-day life. New skills are reinforced during group time for the last half of class. Because preschoolers are full of energy, we'll also learn through song and rhythm. Scholarship recipients pay $10. Instructor: Shanda Trent 8 weeks. No class 2/19 or 2/26. Re

Ages 3-5 & an Adult. Through guided play, you and your child learn & practice becoming a writer. Each week we practice fine motor skills and letter recognition in varied ways that are easy to implement at home. Then, we do large group activities, especially writing together. One component to learning to write is understanding that it's just "talk written down." We also use components from "Handwriting Without Tears," a curriculum widely used in the schools. These tools help your child feel more confident in the first efforts to be a writer. Shanda’s 30 plus years of working with young children provides her with a large repertoire of fun ways to playfully learn early literacy skills. Hands-on class with plenty of fun take-home ideas to introduce early writing skills. Scholarship recipients pay $10. Shanda Trent. 8 weeks. No class 2/19 or 2/26.

This fall, Rec & Ed held the second annual fundraising 5K to support our Youth Scholarship Program. “Rick’s Run for Kids” drew over 330 runners and walkers and raised $13,000 for youth scholarships. The event also honored the memory of Rick Dekeon, a beloved PE teacher in Ann Arbor Public Schools and coach for Rec & Ed. His commitment to support all children, regardless of background, was well-known throughout our community.
