Color Your Fall with Rec & Ed! Dear Community Member, Research continues to show that out-of-school time enrichment and recreational activities help kids socially and academically. Quality after school activities aren’t just “something to do” until a parent/guardian is available – they provide essential experiences for youth development. That’s why we at Rec & Ed are so proud of our expanded after school programs. In this catalog, you’ll find: • STEAM-based Science and Technology classes that support children’s curiosity about science, technology, engineering, art and math with new themes each term. • Art classes such as the Power of Drawing to increase visual skills, creativity and use of the right side of the brain. • Opportunities to learn chess, the perfect game for developing concentration, problem solving, and strategic thinking skills. • Sports activities to promote exercise and help children develop physical skills, reach goals, and learn teamwork.

New Early Bird Savings for After School Classes Save $10 per class by enrolling your child early. This fall we are discounting all of our youth classes for elementary-age children, as well as selected adult classes. One of our goals is to make enrichment classes more available to our participants. By offering a $10 discount per class we decrease the cost of our already affordable classes so more children and adults can enroll.

Adult Fitness Savings & New Aqua Classes Rec & Ed’s Fitness classes are taught by experienced, certified instructors. Choose the level that best fits your ability and how strenuous a workout you want. Our instructors help you meet your personal goals. To encourage you to exercise more than once a week, you can enroll in 2 fitness classes and save $5 or 3 fitness classes and save $10. New this term are Dance Hiit and a variety of water-based fitness classes: Aqua Fit, Aqua Pilates, Aqua Zumba, H2O Circuits, and Therapeutic Deep H2O Have a colorful and fun Fall, Sally Searls Manager, Lifelong Learning

Why does local muralist Mary Thiefels teach art classes for Rec & Ed? “The opportunity to teach for Rec & Ed presented itself while I was working on my art degree at EMU back in 2001. I remember spending a lot of time developing my first curriculum for those beginning painters. Feeling like I was still perfecting my painting practice, I had to inherently ask myself, “why do I make the decisions I do when making a painting?” I started my students with design and color theory basics and emphasized the importance of drawing. I painted for my students, offering many in class painting demonstrations, talking them through each decision I was making in real time. I continued to teach year round for the following 10 years, developing a rotating cast of “regulars,” most of which remain my loyal students and dear friends to this day. As my personal business as a mural artist picked up I reduced my teaching with Rec & Ed to one or two sessions per year. In my classes, we have fun together; I make painting easy and carefree. I encourage my students to experiment and “overwork” their paintings so they will learn their own limitations. I always look forward to the friends I make and get immense joy out of watching my students become confident and accomplished painters!” Acrylic Painting Beginning & Continuing with Mary Thiefels can be found on page 5

Then, students learn the power of style as they use the core elements to interpret a unique way of visual expression. Students learn about the power of working with a medium to get many different effects from important skill sets. From organic to geometric, the power of line can help students to turn shape into form, and create pattern and texture. What fun as students discover that all complex objects can be broken down into familiar shapes as they build a solid foundation - taking drawing from doodles to confidenceboosting achievements! FAST TRACK TENNIS

(Ages 11-14)

It’s never too late to start playing tennis! Using a variety of tennis court equipment, teaching techniques and introducing match play, our instructors “fast track” learning essential tennis skills, in a fun, yet relaxed environment. The goal is to progress to full court play with green ball by the end of session. Most players repeat FTT before moving to Junior Team Tennis (per instructor recommendation). CLASS ID#

Kids Club is a great way to continue exposing our children to music. As they are performers themselves, having a frequent opportunity to see professionals perform gives them something to aspire to. Kids can see sports on TV or in person, and picture themselves in that role, but when it comes to music performance, live is pretty much the only way to have kids see something that they could picture themselves doing.
