COMING HOME TO SERVE Father Tim Wyciskalla returns to his Roncalli High School roots BY JOE SCHROEDER

ith the mark of a new school year, the usual faces of Roncalli students and teachers begin to fill the halls and return to their usual routines. Many new faces have joined the mix as well, as there is a record number of new teachers and freshman class coming into the school. With all of these new faces, there is one that stands out among the rest. Chances are most students have already seen Father Tim Wyciskalla wandering through the halls or celebrating mass this year, as he is pretty hard to miss standing at 6’6.” However, there is more to the new Roncalli Chaplain than meets the eye. A St. Barnabas and Roncalli graduate, Wyciskalla grew up on the southside of Indianapolis. Coming from a family of devout Catholics, he has always been involved in many parish activities, which he believes helped pave the way to his ordination. “I was always surrounded by great priests growing up, and when I decided to involve myself in the Catholic culture, I received nothing but support,” Wyciskalla said. Despite having such great priests and attending Catholic schools, once high school started for Wyciskalla, he began to step away from his faith. He struggled to balance StuCo, basketball, mock trial, a social life and schoolwork while maintaining his faith. “My parents had to drag me to church, I was more concerned with hanging out with friends, and I began to take my faith for granted,” said Wyciskalla. However, around the start of his senior year at Roncalli, Wyciskalla began to experience a reawakening, and started reconsidering if God was calling him to a vocation in the church. “I developed a new appreciation of my faith and realized the opportunity I had,” he said. After high school, Father Tim immediately enrolled in Bishop Brute seminary, received an undergraduate degree from Marian University, and spent four years at St. Meinrad. He then was ordained by the Archdiocese in June of 2014, and later served as a pastor at St. Malachy. This summer Wyciskalla found out that he was coming home. “I was overwhelmed and excited when I heard I was assigned to Roncalli and Saints Francis and Clare,” said Wyciskalla. “I was also very humbled to know that I would be following in the steps of Father James Wilmoth,” Wyciskalla said.
Father Tim was also excited to return because he recognizes the special atmosphere that surrounds Roncalli. “The close-knit, supportive community within the school, along with the freedom and encouragement to express your faith, makes Roncalli a great place,” Wyciskalla said. Father Tim looks forward to serving the South Deanery through his work at Roncalli and Saints Francis and Clare.

enior Hannah Fikes became one of the few to score a perfect composite score of 36 on the ACT standardized test, and the first in Roncalli school history to do so. The ACT is one of the key scores that colleges look at for admittance. “The day before I took the test I did a full length practice exam that really helped me prepare, also periodically studying in my free time helped,” said Fikes. Less than one-tenth of one percent of students receive a perfect score, according to ACT representatives. Among high school graduates of the class of 2015, only 1,598 of the more than 1.92 million students in that class earned an ACT composite score of 36.
SPORTS ON DECK Tonight: Football team takes on 9/28: Tennis celebrates senior night Brebeuf at Roncalli at 7 p.m. against Columbus North at 5 p.m.
“The best advice I can give to someone who’s going to take the test is to take practice tests so you learn how to manage your time wisely, also getting enough sleep the night before is important,” said Fikes. The ACT consists of tests in English, reading, math, and science. The tests for the four subjects are scored on a 1-36 scale, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. Hannah received the highest possible, a 36. Fikes is still in the process of selecting a college, but she currently has her eyes set on Washington University in St. Louis to study biomedical engineering.
