ne might not expect a 21-year-old Indiana University student majoring in political science to be running for state representative. But Roncalli alum Patrick Lockhart (R‘12) learned the impact the government can have on his life and was inspired to make a difference. Lockhart will be present on the November ballot as the Democratic candidate for District 91 in the Indiana House of Representatives. He’ll be competing against incumbent Republican Robert W. Behring, who has been in office since 1992. The long campaign has included meeting senators and representatives, attending numerous events, and introducing himself to the people of District 91 which includes the southwestern corner of Marion County, the southeastern corner of Hendricks County, and a portion of Indianapolis. Lockhart has enjoyed the journey so far. “I have absolutely loved getting out and talking to the voters in my district. So many people have such incredible stories and perspectives. Beyond that, it’s great to hear things like ‘no politician has ever knocked on my door before,’” Lockhart said. If elected, he hopes to help the people of District 91 as well as work with all members of the Indiana House of Representatives. Lockhart plans to address education, the economy and infrastructure. He also hopes to be an accessible and easyto- reach lawmaker. Despite their age, Lockhart encourages other young adults to involve themselves in politics. “We see young people not taking advantage of their right to vote. Regardless of their reasons behind that, by not actively participating in the democratic process, they are not demanding that our elected officials address the issues that affect them,” Lockhart said. He proposes two solutions: “[first,] to vote, of course. If our generation is looked at as a highly active part of the electorate, we will get more politicians taking care of what we see as important. [Second, we need to] get more young people running for office. If more of us are elected, we will be in a capacity to address these issues ourselves.” Roncalli has played a part in his political career. Both Mr. Ryan Costello and Mrs. Elaine Jerrell, two teachers that Lockhart considered influential in his experience at Roncalli, continue to support him and remember him as someone who showed curiosity in everything he did. In English class, Costello taught Lockhart to look at issues at all angles before making decisions. “He was always proactive in asking questions and clarifying concepts that may have been unclear,” Costello said. Jerrell, his former government teacher, was his main influence for choosing political science as a major. “I’m glad he’s chosen to be a participant, because he has thought about the process [of government] and I’m certain he has a lot of good ideas to improve it,” Jerrell said. As election day quickly approaches, Lockhart hopes voters will give him the chance serve them in the Indiana State House.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Lockhart’s political steps drew attention from national news outlets, such as CNN over a year ago. He hopes to inspire other young adults to get involved just as he has done.
