fter four years of high school, the class of 2017 is ready to move on to the next chapter of life. Throughout their time at Roncalli, especially during senior year, this class of students has achieved many accomplishments worthy of recognition. Going straight from high school to the armed services can be a difficult decision for many teenagers. Despite this, two seniors have decided to embark on this difficult task and take it to the next level. Senior Chloe Owen applied and was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy while senior Gabe Otley will be attending U.S. Air Force Academy. Upon graduation, these two will serve in the United States military. “When the Air Force Academy offered me the opportunity to both serve in the greatest military in the world and play football, I could not pass it up,” Otley said. The Class of 2017 has also won many academic awards, including senior Claire Whalen. During the school year, the Indiana Association of School Principals chooses 40 seniors who excel in the classroom first and foremost, but they also look for students who also are actively involved in their schools and communities and take on leadership roles in those activities. These young scholars are presented with the Indiana Academic All-Star award. One of the recipients selected was Roncalli's

Whalen, who became the school's 17 recipient of this prestigious award. “To be mentioned with so many other really accomplished peers was a wonderful experience," Whalen said, "and it was awesome to be rewarded for all the work I have put in over the past four years." Additionally, three seniors have achieved the highest rank for the Boy Scouts of America. Seniors Connor Cleary, Spencer Jewula and Quentin LaFollette all were awarded the Eagle Scout rank this this year. All three completed fulfilled requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. To earn the rank of Eagle Court, one must pass specific tests that are organized by requirements and merit badges. “Getting my Eagle Scout is a testament to all those in my life who have shaped me as a person,” said Cleary. Lastly, the Roncalli fine arts department showcased their skills when AP Studio Art student senior Cassidy Mattingly won the National Scholastic Art Award. Sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Mattingly won the Visual Arts category with her entry: "Silver Cascade". Over the course of the year, seniors have certainly accomplished many achievements. Ultimately, the class of 2017 has left their mark and set an example for future senior classes.
