“Be the kind of host who prepares ahead of time so that your gathering can be relaxed. One fun way to prepare is gather some of your closest friends to help with the set up—and make the preparations as fun as the actual party itself.”

“Entertaining is a multi-faceted undertaking. By juxtaposing complementary textures, flavors and visual elements, you’ll create a memorable evening for your guests that appeals to all of their senses.”

“To add a unique touch to your gathering, turn to nature, like a piece of driftwood, a few potted plants or some greenery from your yard. It’s amazing what beautiful things you can find in your own backyard!”

THUNDER BY THE BAY RIDES OUT OF SARASOTA! I don’t want to make excuses. I just lost and I will learn something very important. Francesca Schiavone

No more THUNDER in downtown Sarasota? Are you serious? The firm, Research Data Services, calculated that the direct and indirect overall economic impact of the 2016 Thunder by the Bay Motorcycle Festival was almost $8.9 Million (a 10%+ increase from 2015) and generated 8,400 room nights in area lodgings (up from 6,000 in 2015). Lakewood Ranch has openly welcomed the festival knowing its longstanding history, economic impact it brings to the area, and revenues raised for Suncoast Charities for Children. “We are very excited to welcome this Festival to the Lakewood Ranch community, which will allow it to expand and grow,” stated Rex Jensen, President & CEO of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Inc.

O

www.thunderbythebay.org

nce again Thunder by the Bay ROARED into Sarasota raising over $160,000 (up from $140,000 in 2015) for Suncoast Charities for Children, yet garnering the WRATH of some residents, business owners and city commissioners. Net proceeds from this special annual event allows Suncoast Charities for Children to provide support to five local non-profit agencies that serve over 8,000 children, teens, and adults with special needs. Now the festival is RIDING into Lakewood Ranch.

Ron Soto, of Soto Optical, and President of the Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association, recently expressed his disappointment. “It’s unfortunate because downtown Sarasota is going to lose tens of thousands of dollars in revenue that ‘Thunder by the Bay’ brought in. We’ve lost the Chalk Festival (to Venice), now we’ve lost ‘Thunder by the Bay’. We’re losing all the events that bring in hundreds of thousands of people downtown, and the whole idea of our merchants association is to bring people downtown.” I’ll share from personal experience that when I travel to an event like Thunder, take Daytona for example, I stay close to the event. That’s where the action is. In addition to impacting city merchants, this move is now going to negatively impact the hotels in downtown Sarasota as more rooms will be booked out East and along the interstate. Live and learn! Thank you Lucy Nicandri and all the sponsors and volunteers that make Thunder by the Bay happen. I’ll continue supporting this great event and charity. See you at “Rockin’ & Ridin’ At The Ranch”, January 5-8, 2017! Ed Bertha November 2016 PS - This year’s headliner is Blue Oyster Cult!

Plan Your Legacy For most, estate planning is more about how assets are transferred to heirs than assessing taxes.

together

M

aybe Tony Soprano was living dangerously, but no one expected James Gandolfini to die at age 51, including Gandolfini. The popular actor who played the lead role on the long-running cable TV series “The Sopranos” left behind an estate valued at more than $70 million. But his will was so poorly planned that nearly half of it is likely to go to the IRS. Only a few of us have to be concerned about how to plan for reducing estate taxes. For 2016, the estate and gift tax exemption is $5.45 million per individual, up from $5.43 million in 2015. That means an individual can leave $5.45 million to heirs and pay no federal estate or gift tax. A married couple can shield $10.9 million from federal estate and gift taxes. More than half of U.S. states do not have an estate tax. So for most of us, the issue is how we want our assets distributed, how they will be managed and making certain we leave a meaningful legacy for our family. No one wants to confront his or her own mortality. We don’t want to think about it, and that often translates into ignoring planning for it. But what will happen to a business where ownership is shared if one owner dies without a buy-sell agreement in place? Many times successful businesses fail without adequate succession planning. What about considerations for certain family members, like a child with long-term healthcare needs? Would it be appropriate to leave a lump sum of money or control of a business to a child who won’t handle

it responsibly? And what if you became physically or mentally unable to make important decisions about your assets? So, for the majority of us, estate planning is more about how our assets pass on to our beneficiaries and making certain our intentions are met rather than payment of taxes. Planning often boils down to identifying your goals and objectives and executing key documents such as a will, a durable power of attorney and advance medical directives, and occasionally, in particular for individuals with more substantial assets, one or several types of trusts.

In a time when emotional and physical suffering is at an all-time high as a result of people feeling disconnected from themselves and others, disoriented from the truth and disempowered to affect change, Keith is providing tools to find health, harmony and aliveness to the fullest degree. Keith gained national fame during his years as an NFL AllPro athlete, #59. After a paralyzing tackle abruptly ended his promising football career, Keith faced his greatest mental, emotional and physical challenge; To choose victory over victimhood. Keith suffered a “spinal contusion” and didn’t know if he’d ever move again. For six months his body remained numb, but a therapist began teaching him meditation and breathing. Focusing on his breathing, Keith’s body started to respond, and he began to heal himself. Three months later he could walk, but couldn’t write, and football was over. Turning his accident into a life purpose has allowed him to teach and inspire others from a vulnerable and powerful position. Keith now considers serving his purpose, and as a mindfulness mentor and healer, the most rewarding position he has ever played. Learn more about Keith and his mission at www.KeithMitchell59.com.

The Power of

BREATH

“My body wouldn’t respond to my mind. It was an out-ofbody experience. It was beyond devastating to learn that I would never play football again.”

Y

our breath can be as significant or as insignificant as you like, but to recognize that either way you are creating this. This simple, but yet complex, discovery is what I learned in my transition to life after sports. Life after football by itself was a scary transition and to be badly injured was an additional hurdle. Luckily for me I had this discovery or I don’t believe I would be where I am now. I learned pranayama (breathing) exercises by a nurse practitioner. When she shared this with me I realized that with the number of chances a day we breathe it can contribute to our healing. The academics of what happens when we bring attention to our breathing are such. By breathing from the abdomen we can simulate a healing sensation by the diaphragm pushing down on the inhale and on the exhale pushing up.

Now from this healing construction we can create an opportunity for growth and expansion to our person. This growth I like to name our greatness potential and in my opinion this is where possibility resides. In this posture of possibility we have the ability to transform relationships, traumas, love, anything that has produced discomfort in our lives. We make the space to move to another paradigm that we may have never realized was available to us. In my opinion this process takes us directly to not only healing but also purpose, We create this detoxifying experience, and, when we find purpose we also find enhancing the circulation of oxygen solutions. and blood flow to the body allowing the healing process to happen. Breathing I look forward to sharing this practice facilitates an internal massage to the with each and every one of you! organs that enables a new relaxation, a gentle calmness, to the experience we are Namaste! having. Therefore the body is allowed to do what it naturally does and regenerate itself. How beautiful is this?

REHAB YOUR ASANAS

W

hen first practicing breathing, one should learn how to align the spine properly to maximize the free flow of energy and the proper muscle activation for breath control. Our spine has 3 natural curves: cervical, thoracic, and lumbar. We lose these curves over time with prolonged standing, sitting, and poor sleeping postures. Your breathing patterns can also become disrupted. A lot of us tend to be chest-only breathers, which limits the ability to fill the lungs. When you address spinal alignment and base all of your physical movements on the correct posture, you place your body in the best position to strengthen the stabilizers, protect the spine, and to breathe correctly. The inability to properly control spinal movement and breath can contribute to injury, reinjury or delayed recovery. Our postural muscles, transverse abdominals, and respiratory muscles are slow twitch muscles that are used for endurance. In contrast, fast twitch muscles are used for short bursts of movement. Slow twitch muscles are typically closest to the spine, and are deep and internal. They form our architectural support structure and are controlled at an unconscious level. Typically postural muscles are only supposed to engage at approximately 1530% effort. When they are fatigued from injury/pain/nerve damage, fast twitch muscles could take over causing spasms and compression. Yoga is a great way to activate our slow twitch fibers when it’s performed correctly! Practicing pranayama helps to regulate and purify your vital life force energy. I like to teach a modified version of Dirga Pranayama that addresses our lymphatic system. Diaphragmatic breathing stimulates the lymphatic system and your internal organs through expansion and contraction of the diaphragm. The vagal nerve is also stimulated with a diaphragmatic breath and aides is calming our nervous system down through the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and more!

REJUVENATING POSE

n this pose we are looking for focus, body awareness, and breath. Lie on the floor or on a firm surface. Bring your awareness to your spinal alignment and free the area from any tension. Tilt the pelvic bone back (posterior movement) like you are squeezing the buttocks and draw the belly in. Feel how it slides the rest of your spine out of alignment. Now arch forward (anterior movement), by tilting the pelvic bone to point towards the feet. Whole spine movement again. Let it come to a rest in a neutral position while maintaining a slight low back curve. Next, place your hands on your thighs and gently walk your shoulders away towards the back of the mat. Inhale and roll the shoulders up, back and down, opening your chest slightly for proper scapula alignment. Press through your hairline to the ground with a chin tuck, using a gentle 15-30% tension. There should be 3 points of contact: the pelvic bone, the low ribs to the top of the scapula, and the center of the back of your head. If your chin is pointing up, use a small towel under the head. If your lower back is flat on the floor, place a roll under your lower back. Allow your body to feel a neutral alignment while performing a 3 part breath. With your hands resting on your belly, inhale through the nose while expanding your belly. Gently resist an upwards movement. Pause for a moment without

hand pressure and exhale with Ujjayi breathing through the nose like you are saying “hmmm” while gently tightening abdominals. Exert slight pressure on your belly during this exhale to assist in lymph flow. Continue to exhale in this manner. Next inhale through the belly and begin to expand the low ribs. Expanding the low ribs will open the large intestine and kidneys on the left and your liver on the right. Exhale using Ujjayi breathing. Finally inhale through the belly and low ribs while raising the clavicle area but without raising the shoulders. Continue to draw deep breaths attending to the 3 cues: belly, low ribs, and clavicle. Exhale with a gentle belly bracing, closing the low ribs, and lowering the clavicle. End practice by being still and noticing your breath as it naturally occurs. “The Spirit within me respects the Spirit in you.” Medical Disclaimer Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. Bright Love Update Letter from the Heart By Katie Daly A year ago my family’s world was shaken to its core. My sister was in the ICU unresponsive and doctors had no answers. Kristina had a massive brain stem stroke and was given the diagnosis of “locked in syndrome”, defined as a condition in which the body and most of the facial muscles are paralyzed but consciousness remains and the ability to perform certain eye movements is preserved. This is what doctors told my family my sister would be like for the rest of her life, locked in her body, trapped.

She is regaining movement in her fingers and hands, her head control has vastly improved, her eye strength is amazing, and she is able to use communication devices and laugh, kiss, smile, and roll her eyes the way she has her whole life when she’s feeling sassy. Even though she’s has set backs, she’s never given up. I still ask you to pray and send good vibes, because the day to day in my family’s world is indescribable. Raising a medically complex 2 year old and caring for Kristina is no easy feat, yet somehow my parents still do it with a smile on their faces. There is struggle and defeat in every single day, but there is still hope. And for me, that means we’re still winning.

John Wolterman

Net Zero Construction By Ed Bertha Photography by James Corwin Johnson

Concrete, we can trace the word back to the Latin verb concrescere, meaning “to grow together.” It’s been around since the Egyptians used gypsum and lime mortars in the pyramids and still forms the basis for construction today.

John Wolterman’s industry experience is a comprehensive blend of educational knowledge and practical experience. Growing up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, John learned the fundamentals of construction firsthand while working for his father during the summer. His father owned a company specializing in concrete projects, and thus his interest in the industry was piqued at an early age. John soon discovered a genuine affinity for the hands-on aspect of building, and after high school graduation he and his father started Wolterman Brothers Construction. The company’s growth was the direct result of John’s desire to facilitate a concierge approach in the building process. Wolterman Brothers quickly grew to more than 60 employees grossing over $20 million per year, in rural Ohio, specializing in commercial concrete construction. These opportunities enabled John to assimilate a complete understanding of the complexities involved in the construction industry. This is also where John was first exposed to Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), in building hotels and schools. Understanding the unique advantages of this type of construction, he became a certified NUDURA Insulated Concrete Forms Installer, Pervious Concrete Technician and Value Engineering Consultant. We all know how Hurricane Katrina devastated the lives of thousands of people in New Orleans. Impacted by witnessing the damage firsthand while vacationing there, John dedicated himself to researching safer, more durable home construction methods. Beyond designing more robust homes, that vacation inspired him to pursue his dream. In 2012, with his wife and three children, he left Ohio and moved to Sarasota to start Net Zero Construction and build high quality custom homes. With 20+ years’ experience in the industry John wanted Net Zero to be a leader and revolutionary force in the way homes were built in the Gulf Coast region. With his knowledge and experience using Insulated Concrete Forms, which utilize cast-in-place concrete walls between two layers of insulation, he made the decision to build ICF-based homes as these systems are extremely strong and energy efficient. With a home’s skeleton solved, John next set out to analyze roofing systems. Researching roofing materials directed John to Gerard Stone Coated Metal Roofs. These roofs have the classic appeal of wood shakes or tile, yet easily surpass the stringent Miami-Dade testing requirements, deliver a Class A Fire Warranty and their air convection qualities provide energy savings. Plus, Gerard roofs offer a lifetime transferrable roof warranty. No other builder offers this as standard.

Not done yet, doors and windows were next in line. The windows and doors utilized in a Net Zero home surpass the most stringent coastal requirements, including exceeding the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) rating. Net Zero utilizes out swinging exterior doors with multi-point locking systems for their added strength and all glass components incorporateLow-E coatings which filters out 99.7% of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Added up a Net Zero home is designed to effectively minimize a breach during a hurricane, which causes an increase in pressure that lifts roofs off and pushes walls out. In starting Net Zero, John created and set a new standard he calls the “Energy, Smart, Safe Homes”. Net Zero’s completely custom built homes are energy efficient, offer smart home technology and can withstand hurricane force winds, in excess of 200 mph. “Building energy efficient, smart, safe homes doesn’t mean you are paying more. We build our homes at the same price point as traditional construction, yet have all of our advantages,” he states. “In fact with the use of Insulated Concrete Forms and Gerard roofs, beyond strength and durability, there are also significant savings to the homeowner on their energy bills and insurance rates,” he continues. With Net Zero John also wanted to instill the same level of service that drove Wolterman Brother’s success. Net Zero’s goal is not only to build a safe, beautiful, energy efficient home, but to make the building process seamless. John’s presence during construction is consistent and forms the foundation of excellent customer care. “You don’t hire a custom builder to work with his staff,” he says. “It’s vital to the success of each project that my clients can talk to me at any time, and that I am available to answer questions and address concerns. At the end of the day, it’s their home we’re building. I never lose sight of that.”

Form and function collaborate in John’s designs; he maximizes the use of space and light to create homes that speak to their owners’ lifestyles. “There is always a view,” he observes. “My designs capitalize on the space around them. An innovative perspective makes the difference,” he shares. Each Net Zero home also comes with its own certification. Every detail from framing to paint colors to appliances are carefully serialized and recorded on a dedicated homeowner website. Making it easy for the home owner and any future home owner to have all the information and history they need about their Net Zero home. Builders across Florida, and beyond, will soon be building homes under the specifications Net Zero utilizes. From the ground-up, Net Zero’s homes are solid, substantial and stunning. Furthermore, they are as distinctive as their owners. Net Zero Construction is raising the bar on residential construction throughout the Gulf Coast region. With Net Zero Construction you protect your family and your investment.

ADA Testers

And A Congressional Response

T

he Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has spawned a cottage industry of testers and their lawyers who travel from site to site looking for nonconformities. The ADA is a Federal civil rights act, creating the right to bring discrimination suits with regard to persons encountering real or perceived barriers preventing them from fully using facilities. When issues are found they file suit. As with any activity of this type, some of the suits are legitimate and some are not. Florida and California are the two hottest spots in the Country for such suits. One issue that exists in an ADA suit is the standing of the plaintiff to bring the case. Standing turns on whether one can show that he or she was harmed. Test ADA cases often bump up against the question of just how real is the discriminatory impact on the rights of the plaintiff. Suits which are not legitimate often allege very technical deficiencies, sometimes in older facilities that are older than the

ADA itself. The age of the facility is not always a defense by itself, but there are times when the nature thereof makes corrections impracticable. Some ADA plaintiffs have only the most tenuous connection to the businesses they sue, and the alleged barriers that they challenge. Even when suits are legitimate, the land or business owners are often required to spend thousands of dollars to defend themselves (even having to pay the plaintiff ’s attorney in some cases) and then may have to spend more to correct the deficiencies. The defendants often have no knowledge of the alleged violations until they are served with the complaint and summons. These costs are often an onerous burden and are nonproductive. Only the attorneys benefit financially. Recently a bill was introduced in the United States House of Representatives that, if passed as written, may remedy abuses of the ADA testers to some degree. A very important aspect of the proposed

law is a requirement that before a law suit can be filed the defendant must be given notice of the issues and be provided 90 days to correct them. Within 15 days of the defendant’s receipt of the notice, he or she must provide a notice to the public of the alleged violations and the steps being taken to correct them. A defendant who demonstrates a good faith effort to correct the violation but is not able to do so within the 90-day period provided is entitled to an additional 30 days to comply with the requirements. There is no guaranty that the bill will ever become law. Some states, notably California, have taken steps themselves to deal with ADA tester abuse. Public pressure at the state and Federal level can improve the chance that ADA abuse can be limited or stopped. Until the laws are changed, property and business owners remain vulnerable to law suits sprung on them without notice and without the opportunity to cure before filing.

Making Your Business JAM!

t the time of this writing I’m on a plane flying home from St. Louis after speaking to 1,000 highly energized people from the company Tastefully Simple. The event was called ‘Get Jazzed’ and it prompted me to think more deeply about how absolutely useful the art of improvisation or jamming can be for business leaders, followers and everyone in between. For we musicians, improvisation is the powerful and uninhibited expression of artistry born of thousands of hours of practicing fundamentals. Great musical improve requires a deep understanding of theory and rhythm applied to thousands of hours or practice to allow a sublime expression that is literally a stream of consciousness. Successful business leaders, managers and employees can be in the situation where the routine, status quo, daily mandate, roles or predictable thinking must give way to making spontaneous decisions, stretching our comfort zones, and evolving the process of ‘thinking outside the box’ into ‘there is no box!’ This may require some spontaneous creativity or improvisation. So let’s jam baby! In the face of the unexpected and the uncertain, we need to have the confidence in our fundamental skill sets to be brave enough to boldly and spontaneously go where we have not gone before. This is what the great improvisers like Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Buddy

Rich would do every time they engaged in improvisation. Business leaders often times need to unlearn the predictive protocol when faced with new challenges. It is time to venture into the realm of uncertain outcomes. This requires a heightened sense of awareness of what is happening right in the present moment. Improvisation is responding to NOW. As I’m writing, I’ve been listening to Miles David My Funny Valentine and Led Zeppelin Song Remains the Same. These musicians are having a real time conversation. There is absolute uncertainty of the outcome but faith that something extraordinary will result. There is an overall song structure or agreement that is analogous to an overall company mandate or project goal. The openness and willingness to jam inside this structure and trust each other’s instincts and the serendipity of the moment brings true magic. Business as usual is like reading a script. Improvisation/JAMMING is a conversation between employees, managers, customers, investors, consultants and competitors. It is a constant experiment, a freedom to succeed as well as fail as we respond to the

trial and error and spontaneously learn from the experiences, both positive and negative. When we improvise we abandon convention, restraints and rules. Established leaders, managers and innovators usually have a great understanding of the rules and the protocols. Great improvisers break the rules to allow and promote experimentation, embellishment, exploration and disruption for the purpose of being witness and participant to what could be. Great improvisers also understand the value of being superb followers and listeners, ego-less in the face of someone else’s jam, and free for their ‘band members’ to fly or fall. It is the process of provocation and respect; a safe space for everyone involved being free to recklessly abandon limitations, to reach a new groove and create a flow state that can be a potentially dangerous and intimate place of discovery. I challenge readers to promote this organized confusion, support unique collaborations, encourage teams to really jam, role-play, exchange absurd ideas, get truly vulnerable, decimate the box and discover some magic. Learn from the great improvisers. JAM!

What Does BREXIT Mean To Our Real Estate Market?

I

was born and raised in England and watched with interest as the United Kingdom decided its future – whether to remain in the European Union or leave and become autonomous again. While it was a very close vote, the majority of the British people did vote to exit the E.U. The exact details of BREXIT will be negotiated over the next two years, and its full impact will not be known for some time. Many readers know that I make several trips each year to the United Kingdom, where I exhibit at international property shows and speak at seminars about buying real estate in Florida. As a result of these marketing efforts, I have helped many British citizens buy and sell homes here. In the weeks since the BREXIT vote I have had an opportunity to talk with many of our British customers and gauge their reaction as to how exiting the E.U. may impact their investment in Florida real estate. Many British citizens purchase homes in Florida to enjoy during their vacations or retirement years. These buyers are still very active in the market. Some told me when they re-examined their plans in light of BREXIT, they asked themselves the question: “If not now, when?” They still have a desire, or some would say a need, to enjoy a home in the sun, and many have decided to proceed with their plans to buy a home here in Florida. The biggest concern for these so-called lifestyle buyers is the fall in the value of Sterling against the U.S. Dollar. The Pound is currently trading around 10% less than it was pre-BREXIT. This has caused some buyers to reduce their US$ budgets and look for lower priced homes. Finding a value-priced home in a rising market can be a challenge. It may mean they buy a home that needs some updates, and many British buyers are prepared to

put in renovation effort themselves – a very common approach when they buy property in their home country. A value-priced home could be a home currently owned by a British citizen. British owners who purchased homes when the Pound was strong, and Florida home prices were low, stand to realize big gains if they sell their property now – not only from price appreciation, but also from the decline in Sterling. The weaker the Pound, the more money the seller makes when he repatriates funds back to England. Such sellers will be keen to secure a buyer while the Pound is weak and they may be open to accepting a lower offer on their property. A British buyer and a British seller can also agree that a property is paid for in Pounds rather than in U.S. Dollars, saving both parties bank fees in connection with currency exchange transactions. To get more house for their money, British buyers may also be willing to compromise on location of the property. They may choose to buy the same size/ quality home they had planned to, but perhaps the home is located a little further from the beach. We are seeing that some buyers, even if they have cash available now, look to finance their purchases as a way to minimize the impact of a weaker Pound. They can put down a deposit of 30-35% and finance the remainder through an American mortgage. Once the Pound/ Dollar exchange rate improves, buyers can repay the mortgage without penalty. This allows them to enjoy their place in the sun now, but minimizes the impact of a weaker Sterling. Yes, we are seeing some British lifestyle buyers respond to BREXIT by reducing the price they are willing or able to pay for a home here, but they are still in the market.

34 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

It’s a different story however, for British investors. These are buyers of rental investment properties that they typically rent unfurnished on long leases. While these investors still like the high rental incomes they can achieve, they are concerned about their exit strategy and the need to repatriate funds to U.K. at what may be a much less favorable exchange rate when the time comes. The investor’s return from a rental property here has also been impacted by a recent change in U.K. tax regulations. Investors can no longer write-off mortgage interest on investment properties, further reducing rates of return. There is, however, a school of thought that says BREXIT may actually increase the number of British citizens who buy homes in Florida. France, Spain and Portugal have long been favorite destinations for British retirees. Owning a home in another E.U. country, instead of Florida, has several advantages while U.K. remains a member of the E.U. British homeowners continue to benefit from free healthcare services while they are in their European homes, and they are afforded elements of fair property rights and tax treatment by governments in other E.U. countries. These benefits may no longer apply after BREXIT. This may “even the playing field” somewhat, and make Florida a more attractive location for Brits wishing to own homes here. Now, if only we could offer British buyers full time residence here through a retirement visa and immigration reform, and if the Dollar would weaken, and Sterling would strengthen . . . . . Florida’s Fall Fashion Forecast How to Dress for Fall in Warm Climates

T

he Fall Fashion challenge has come once again for Florida fashionistas. Dressing for fall in Florida can sometimes prove challenging with our hottest temperatures and highest humidity levels being in September and October. No need to sweat - just because temps are warm, it doesn’t mean we need to miss out on the fun fall trends altogether. For my readers who live in Florida, where it will be a long time before the thermometer will dip, I wanted to share some tips and trends you can embrace this fall even though it is still hot. With a little creativity, you can embrace the best of fall without breaking a sweat (literally). It’s all about adapting the trends. Too hot to wear a leather jacket? Try a pair of leather shorts or a skirt instead. Flannel shirts got you “glistening”? Try tying one around your waist or finding a similar pattern in some material other than flannel. If there’s one item I gravitate toward every time I go fall shopping, it’s sweaters. But sadly for me, my collection has been tucked away anxiously awaiting temps to drop. And so, I bring out my pullover. I love how this top has the pullover sweater

feel without fully committing to long sleeves. To keep the look warm weatherappropriate, pair it with high-waisted cutoff jean shorts. Lastly, finish the look with the ever-popular fall ankle boot, and add key accessories like a pendant necklace, a snake ring, tortoiseshell sunnies, and a flannel-inspired backpack. Being from a cold-weather climate, there’s one thing I don’t miss wearing now that I live in Florida - tights day in and day out. With that being said, why not go barelegged while wearing a dress, especially one in a fall color scheme. Pair it with a jean vest that will add extra dimension to the look (like a jacket would) without adding on too much bulk and heat. Finish the look with dainty jewelry, a peep toe

ankle boot and -- my favorite fall beauty trend -- a bright red lip. The sporty look is another trend that has recently been gaining a lot of popularity this fall. With a baseball tee-inspired top, a baseball cap with leather details, and oxblood studded sneakers, you will be well on your way to emulating this trend for yourself. And if it’s too hot to wear a camouflage shirt, try tying it around your waist. (This is totally okay to do.) Bonus: if it does cool off after sunset, you’ll be prepared. Complete the look with some art deco-inspired statement earrings and a simple bracelet. For another fall look, bring in a leather piece. I like the idea of choosing a leather skirt in place of shorts this fall because there is less skin-to-material contact. Pair the look with a top that demonstrates fall’s take on printed florals. Lastly, some dainty statement earrings, a stand-out cocktail ring, and burgundy loafers add feminine details to the look, while a metallic bag keeps that urban feel alive. Real Style challenges you to putt some looks together that embrace an autumn attitude. Keep cool and look fashionable this fall! Becca Z. Towery Fashion Stylist/Image Consultant

Are You Sleeping with the Enemy When You Go To Bed with Makeup On?

Admit it, if you wear makeup, at one point or another you’ve probably gone to sleep without removing it. Whether you forgot you were wearing makeup when it comes time to go to bed or you were just too tired to bother taking it off..... we’ve all been there.

T

he important thing is to make sure it doesn’t become a habit. Makeup is supposed to help you look and feel more beautiful, but leaving it on overnight often has the opposite effect. Our skin is covered in pores, and those pores not only allow us to sweat, but they also allow us to secrete sebum, a waxy lubricant that helps moisturize and protect our skin. Sebum also helps remove dead skin cells and other irritants from pores in the process. The problem with makeup is that it clogs pores and prevents sebum from doing its job. Instead, sebum builds up, which can cause acne. If you want to avoid waking up to pimples, you need to remove your makeup each night before bed. You can use a makeup remover, facial cleanser, cold cream or toner to cleanse your skin and make sure it’s free of makeup. And don’t forget to remove your eye makeup as well. So, just how bad is it to go to sleep with your makeup on?

unlikely to cause long-lasting damage to your skin. However, each night you sleep in your makeup, your pores become more clogged. Eventually, this can result in the formation of a microcomedone, which attracts the acne-causing bacteria to your pores.

significant eye irritation. Sleeping in eye makeup repeatedly may result in the clogging of the tiny hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelids. When these areas become clogged, bacteria can build up and cause inflammation that may require treatment from your doctor.

What are the side effects of sleeping in makeup?

What about wrinkles? Will it cause skin to age prematurely?

What is the worst makeup product to sleep in?

Sleeping in your makeup can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which the makeup holds on to. Free radicals cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin. Additionally, makeup can clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the development of acne.

During the day you accumulate a lot of oxidative stress. When you sleep in your makeup you are not giving your skin a chance to recover from this damage, which can lead to prematurely aged skin.

Foundations and thick, oil-based primers are often the worst offenders. They prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally at night, causing blackheads, acne and dullness.”

If you just sleep in eye makeup (mascara, eyeliner), is it still as bad?

“Sleeping beauty …… is sleeping without makeup.”

But what about just one night? Will it still clog pores or cause breakouts? One night of sleeping in your makeup is

Sleeping in your eye makeup will not cause fine lines or acne on the skin, but it can still lead to problems. Mascara and eyeliner can be rubbed by your pillow and end up in your eyes, which can lead to

“It has been a great honor for me to have conducted all Verdi’s music and for Sarasota Opera to have performed everything he wrote. No other company has ever achieved such an undertaking with the music of a major composer. This could have happened only in Sarasota, and this accomplishment is shared by everyone in the Sarasota and Manatee communities.” Maestro
