NEW YEAR - NEW THOUGHTS “Don’t look back or the future will pass you by.” - Ed Bertha It’s the New Year! Reflections, we all reflected on the past year — some with regret, others with happiness, or maybe with an appreciation for all we received. The New Year is also the time to look forward — perhaps longing for a fresh start or possibly fearful of what is to come. How will you deal with it? With a steady stream of pessimism; the negative, chronic “poor me” self-talk? It doesn’t help. It only continues to build hurt. Or With mind opening positivity? Instead of stoking the fire of self-pity, say new positive things to yourself. It is a two-part solution: 1. Catch yourself when you are entering a negative spiral, and 2. Try to say something positive to yourself. I’m choosing the positivity route for 2019. You shouldn’t worry about the past; 2018 is done. Wishing you a year filled with serenity, laughter, joy, health and prosperity. Ed Bertha

Are you thinking about Network Marketing? When you should explore 1. You want the financial freedom proven to be gained through entrepreneurship 2. You love the products and want to share them with others 3. You are a social media guru and know it’s all about developing relationships 4. You have an opportunity to be in a top team with multiple, proven success records

When you shouldn’t 1. You are comfortable building up someone else’s business 2. You think it is all pyramid scams and your mind can’t be changed 3. You are not motivated to do the work financial freedom requires 4. You don’t understand the “Inverted Pyramid”

SAFE PLACE AND RAPE CRISIS CENTER (SPARCC) Saving Lives Today and Tomorrow‌

As the new year begins and we continue to create new lasting memories with family and friends everyone must be aware that the increased financial and emotional stresses of the season can lead to an increase in domestic and sexual violence. The Suncoast is fortunate to have Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) whose mission is to stop domestic violence in our communities.

16 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Inc. was founded as a non-profit in 1979, and will celebrate 40 years of providing free and confidential services to Sarasota and DeSoto counties in 2019. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used to establish power and control over an intimate partner, often leading to the threat or use of violence. Domestic violence includes physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse and can occur in all socioeconomic classes, racial and ethnic backgrounds, age groups, religious affiliations, and sexual orientations. According to the latest statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in the state of Florida over 108,000 domestic violence cases were reported, including 170 deaths at the hands of an intimate partner or relative. SPARCC provides a comprehensive list of free and confidential programs and services focused on serving victims and breaking the cycle of violence. Programs include a 24-hour crisis helpline; 24-hour shelter; safety planning; crisis counseling; case management; children services; information and referrals; professional training; economic justice/financial planning; hospital advocacy; system coordination; legal assistance; therapy; support groups; community awareness programming and prevention education. Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center provides educational presentations free of charge to local schools and community youth programs. As well as providing professional education about both domestic and sexual violence to law enforcement agencies, health care staff, social services and human resource professionals. SPARCC is actively engaged in the primary prevention of domestic and sexual violence through goals and activities aimed at addressing and

changing social norms that support violence in our community. SPARCC truly believes that a violencefree society is attainable and they are committed to breaking the cycle through awareness and education. Heading into the new fiscal year 2018-2019, SPARCC offers 7 support groups, 2 of which are new. Support groups provide survivors with a safe environment and tools that promote healing, safety and empowerment. Recently SPARCC has partnered with Women’s Resource Center (WRC) to increase accessibility to groups and resources. RENOVATION BY BRYANT SAMUEL ENTERPRISES (B.S.E.I.)

This monumental waterfront estate home was built in 1972 by, at the time, well known Architect Erwin Gremli for his own use, explaining why the home was built with extraordinary strength exceeding current codes for the period.

The home was extremely outdated but functional. Potential buyers were fascinated by the view and location. However, the massive construction of the home scared most of them away. B.S.E.I. saw this project in a different light and the end result speaks for itself. 24 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

“This home had great bones. With my client’s vision we looked beyond a tear down. There was a lot to consider; the 50% rule, FEMA guidelines, how to smartly spend money and create value. In the end we accomplished all of that and more.” Bryant “Pete” Samuel, B.S.E.I.

BEFORE

AFTER

Pete Samuel and B.S.E.I.

From economic to extreme they’re here for all your construction needs

G

rowing up in Maryland, construction was never out of sight for Bryant “Pete” Samuel. His father, Pete, ran American Abstract Construction, a carpentry and welding firm, while his mother, Annette, owned Nettie Contracting, a residential home improvement company. As typically happens with family businesses Pete began his journeyman in construction at an early age. Experiencing the ebb and flow of the construction business Pete longed to do something else. Then the Navy called. Still wanting to work with his hands he became an electronics technician after 2 years of electrical engineering school. Thinking electronics repair was the right choice at the time Pete settled into repairing communication units. Completing his enlistment obligations with the Navy, Pete joined Gen Probe in San Diego, CA, performing maintenance for assembly lines. Then something life changing overcame Pete. He realized there was no self-gratification repairing electrical equipment. The equipment looked the same at the beginning of a repair as it did at the end of a repair. He needed to leave the corporate world. Familiar with the Sarasota area, Pete left San Diego and moved in with a childhood friend, Mark Ochs. As fate would have it Mark’s father, Howard, was a trim carpenter and introduced Pete to Coachman Homes. There he was shown the ropes of finish carpentry and 6 weeks later opened Bryant Samuel Enterprises, Inc. (B.S.E.I.) in 2003. Pete was now a 5th generation carpenter. The next 6 years saw the B.S.E.I. team perform trim carpentry for many of the leading builders in the area. The homes ranged in size from

modest starter homes to 16,000 sq. ft. masterpieces. The time spent completing homes set in motion a thought with Pete, “What if I started home construction from a finish carpenter’s viewpoint?” This thought was never far removed as B.S.E.I. continued to trim out homes. While others languished, Pete stayed busy during the real estate downturn. In fact, a project with Beyond Design’s Don Sutherland broadened his experience from residential into commercial construction. With Don’s mentoring, Pete completed his first of many commercial projects, the Geckos restaurant on SR 70 in Bradenton, FL. From shell to completion it took all of 6 weeks. Don’s advice during this first commercial endeavor was priceless and still rings true with Pete to this day. Commercial taught Pete the need to run a project from rough framing to finish carpentry. This caused B.S.E.I. to add rough carpentry, window/ door and siding to their residential repertoire. Now having most of the structural components of home building in place, Pete’s thought of a grander scheme in home building took hold. “Once you know that much about home construction it’s a very natural evolution to get your general contractors license,” he shares. With that said Pete earned his certified general contractor’s license. With over 16 years of local experience, he has cultivated solid relationships with the region’s most skilled and dependable subcontractors. These individuals, he says, provide the support B.S.E.I. needs to maintain a thriving –and diverse– client base. “We strive to maintain consistency not only in the quality of our work, but in the experience and satisfaction

of our clientele,” he says. “You don’t hire a custom builder to work with his staff,” he states. “I don’t want to grow my business to a point where I become removed from my customers. It’s vital to the success of each project that I can speak directly to my client at any time, and that I am available to answer questions and address concerns.” Though the process of building a custom home or undergoing a significant remodel isn’t always easy, Pete strives to facilitate an experience that is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Ongoing communication ensures that budget issues aren’t left to chance. “Only by hearing their ideas and truly understanding what the client wants can we help them achieve their goals.” With the finish trim carpenter speaking, Pete notes, “It is the insignificant-seeming details that can make a difference in a builder’s ability to build a client’s dream.” Bryant Samuel Enterprises, Inc. What Does Detox Mean To You? Detox is a buzz word these days. We envision certain practices when it is heard. Juicing – Restrictions – Suffering – Starving

I

t doesn’t have to be that way. You can detox daily by making small changes over time regarding what you put in and on your body.

Detox not only has to do with what we feed ourselves it is also about reducing the amount of work the body has to do to process what we are putting in and on ourselves. The more our body has to work to break down and use or remove waste the more we tax our vessels and organs causing them to age quicker. Luckily there are many natural strategies that we can do to support healthy aging and healing. Our body has natural paths and processes it goes through to return to a state of optimal functioning. We have the ability to learn this medical knowledge and apply it as often as possible to manage our health holistically using natural resources and strategies. 1. Movement. I do not just mean move more. There are certain steps that need to be taken when looking to get certain outcomes. If you are looking to strengthen then one would seek out lifting weights. If you are looking to improve your cardio, you look to walking or a treadmill. Where do you look when you want to detox? My detox yoga lifestyle program helps move your body with the intention of supporting natural processes through spinal alignment, breath, and sequencing. I created detox yoga therapy to teach others how they can influence the way the body naturally supports moving blood and lymph to the heart for cleansing and removal. 2. Intermittent fasting. Let’s face it; fasting is truly difficult for some of us. The thought of not eating anything for days scared me. That was when I thought food was my only energy source. And I had minimal energy as it was and ate a lot of food. Intermittent fasting is refraining from eating food for 12 to 18 hours on a regular basis. I have found that I may only require one meal a day sometimes if I follow my Simply Cooked drink and food style plan. Overnight till lunch time is an easy time to try. Drink water, detox teas and take your supplements in the morning on a empty stomach for maximum absorption. Liposome technology improves the bioavailability of nutrients! 3. Explore alternative therapies with a holistic focus as we are more than just individual body parts that need to be addressed. Complimentary strategies work alongside other strategies to support and influence each other maximizing the benefits. Most therapies have a home program that can be taught. Seek out knowledgeable professionals that want to teach you how to follow up at home. In other words, Do It Yourself with support from educated professionals. If you love infrared saunas but cannot receive treatments regularly there is a D.I.Y. Tip for that. Use the sun’s natural resources and enjoy an early morning sun salutation and late afternoon beach walk to give your body near infrared radiation form the sun to support rejuvenation at a cellular level. Kimism: Some people say I am doing too many things at once. I say I’m planting a lot of seeds! 30 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

Botox For Your Hair? The season has turned which means your hair has spent all summer enduring the harsh Florida sun. Now add to that cooler temperatures and dryer air and you have a recipe for brittle, frizzy hair.

I

have discovered a professional hair treatment that plumps and smoothes just like a Botox treatment for your skin. The AlterEgo Italy B.Toxkare lifting system is an insalon treatment that delivers the same rejuvenating benefits for your hair that Botox provides for your face. The active ingredient is hyaluronic acid which infuses your hair with weightless, deep hydration. This will also allow your hair to retain moisture and add thickness. Additionally, it will smooth down your cuticle and eliminate frizz without losing volume. After one treatment the results will be clearly visible. Your hair will have strength, bounce and brilliance and will turn heads wherever you go.

The sour cream contains lactic acid which naturally stimulates collagen production. Alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin to help it produce new cells and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. This at-home face mask gives you all the benefits of Botox but without the needles.

Start by gently whisking in 1 tablespoon corn starch into ½ cup boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Let it completely cool off. The mask will not work if the corn starch/water mix is still warm when you add in the rest of the ingredients.

This treatment also allows your blowouts to last longer and your hair will feel silky soft. This is a cumulative treatment and can be used up to once a month and will continue to make your hair healthier and stronger with each application. Did I mention that it also smells amazing?

Once the corn/starch water mix is cool add in the carrot juice and the sour cream. Mix this together until it is smooth and creamy. Then apply this mixture to you freshly cleaned face. Leave on your face for 20 minutes before gently rinsing. Use this face mask once a day for three days and you will start noticing tighter, healthier and You will be able to further enhance more supple skin. The initial batch will these results with the take-home be enough for three days of face mask. B.Toxkare Replumping Shampoo Store your leftovers in the refrigerator and Conditioner that are also full of each day. After the initial three-day the hyaluronic acid that we all know application continue to apply the face and love. Visit me at COCO Salon to mask two to three times per week. transform your hair with this simple 30 minute treatment. What makes this face mask work? At-home needleless Botox face mask What you need: •

1 tablespoon corn starch

½ cup boiling water

2 tablespoons carrot juice

1 tablespoon sour cream

Corn starch draws out impurities from the skin and minimizes pores. It also helps retain moisture in the skin. The carrot juice, which is a beta-carotene, boosts your skin’s collagen and elastin making it firmer and tighter. Vitamin A in the carrot juice slows down aging and helps regenerate skin skills and cure acne.

T

he recent Round Up lawsuit resulting in a payout of $289 million to a school groundskeeper who was diagnosed with terminal cancer after using the product, raises questions about the chemicals we use in and around our associations regularly. Are certain maintenance products harmful to residents and can the Association be held liable for damages incurred? Are ‘green’ products effective? How does the use of maintenance products effect algae in our ponds? A panel of local professionals covered this topic while addressing homeowner concerns. The Community Association Network Group (C.A.N.) offers complimentary educational seminars twice monthly for Association board members and managers. At the September C.A.N. meeting, the following panelists offered some information and helpful tips: 1) PESTICIDES: There are significant health problems that can be caused by pests with various treatments to keep them at bay. Dee Smith of Naturzone says, “If you’re going to be green, walk the walk or sit down! Naturzone has been the leader in green pest solutions since 1988 utilizing integrated pest management and truly writing the protocol for municipalities through education. We start at the lowest threshold, then adapt to the next stage, instead of going in and blasting any old chemical.” When asked if an Association can be held liable if the Association fails to notice residents of pesticide treatment, local attorney Derrick Maginness of Norton, Hammersley, Lopez & Skokos said, “Chapter 482.2265 of the Florida Statues dictates the procedures for Pesticide Companies to follow in order to notice residents of application, however, the responsibility lies upon the resident to register with the state of any sensitivity they may have with regards to pesticides.” 2) ALGAE PREVENTION: Over-treating

Going Green

lakes creates a vicious cycle of algal blooms and chemical dependent ponds. Russ Hoffman of Beautiful Ponds says, “Environmentally friendly solutions such as microbial treatments and aerators will keep your lakes and ponds healthy, without the use of harsh chemicals.” Storm water runoff is rain that does not soak into the ground or get absorbed by trees and plants. Instead, the rain falls on hard surfaces like buildings, parking lots and paved streets or flows off lawns into streets. As it flows over these surfaces, it picks up pollutants, including lawn fertilizer, pet waste and oil residue from cars, before it empties untreated into our neighborhood creeks, canals and coastal waters. 3) ROOF ALGAE PREVENTION: Using green products to clean dirty roofs can reduce pollutants in our waterways. “Roof-A-Cide is the safest and most effective treatment to prevent roof stains” says Irene Graziosi of Roof-A-Cide-West. “Safe for people, pets and plants.” “Once applied by an authorized company, you will never have to clean your roof again!” It is astounding how quickly mold can spread and become hazardous to your health. If mold is present for just one week, restoration time and cost increase dramatically. 4) MOLD REMOVAL: Most of us believe that using bleach to remove mold is the answer. However, WrightWay Emergency ServicesDarrin Caldwell states, “ there are safer, environmentally friendly, and more effective chemicals that can be used. Not only is bleach a very caustic chemical, the mold it doesn’t kill can now be invisible to the human eye. The danger is still there, you just can’t see it now.” We asked the National Director of CBIZ Insurance (Association Division), Matthew Mercier, how to keep our Associations covered against mold claims. he said,” The Association

34 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

MUST have defined mold coverage in the property policy or a separate standalone mold policy to be afforded coverage if the peril of mold were to cause damage to any portions of the building that the association is responsible for.” 5) PAINTING: The two big health threats in paint are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and emissions. VOCs are chemicals used to manufacture many household materials, including furniture, carpeting, pesticides and paint. Eric Lawson, Property Services Channel Manager of Florida Paints says, “Paints have changed a lot in the last 20 years. Most paints today have low VOC’s. For best safety practices: protect your eyes, wear a mask, and paint in well ventilated areas. Also remember to store paint in the smallest container possible.” In addition to green maintenance products, the seminar also provided information on green energy solutions. 6) POOL HEATING: Troy Conner of Symbiont Service Corp showed us the benefits of geothermal pool heating and A/C. He says, “You can save up to 70 to 80% on your pool heating costs by installing a geothermal pool heating system. Additionally, a tax credit of 30% is available for geothermal A/C if installed before 12/31/2019!” The seminar proved to be very informative and timely. Many of the attendees stayed after the seminar to ask the professionals additional questions.
