To A New Year! “Celebrate what you want to see more of” Tom Peters

O

nce again we sit here and look back at another year passing us by. To some the New Year is a time to party, watch a few football games, and maybe make a few resolutions (Knowing deep down inside the resolutions won’t stick).

It is all those things for us, but the New Year is also a time for reflection, a yardstick for measuring what we’ve learned so far, not just in the last year but all along the winding and unpredictable road called life. Let’s be an optimist about this New Year, 2016. January 1st marks a new beginning, a chance to look at the world afresh and to step into the new day and new year boldly. The New Year is a symbol of renewal and on this occasion we should clear our thoughts and refocus our energies. On New Year’s Day, let us all take a moment and just breathe. Pause in what you are doing and set aside where you’ve been and where you are going. In this moment reflect on the here and now. It is today which will form tomorrow, and tomorrow which will form the future! Ed Bertha & Kim Burns January 2016

I can’t tell you how excited I am to have Lilly Pulitzer as the Fashion Show Presenter at “Loving Yourself ”. I Love Lilly! Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau, better known as Lilly Pulitzer, was an American socialite and fashion designer. She founded Lilly Pulitzer, Inc. in 1959. On April 7, 2013, age 81, she died at her home in Palm Beach, Florida. Lilly Pulitzer’s name is a legacy, her outlook on life is an inspiration and her story should serve as an example. “Do things your way. Be yourself and don’t accept your life as is - make it what you dream it to be” is what she believed. She was proud to be different; believing “we are who we are”. For example: some think that Orange is the new black, for Lilly its pink. There’s no secret with Lilly, you just have fun. Let’s face it Real Style readers, Lilly just touches a cord. Their clothes make women feel happy. “You feel happy wearing bright colors”. Lilly Pulitzer believed that Life is as good as you make it. A Lilly quote “BE HAPPY. Wear colors - they affect people’s moods, you know.” Lilly lived the life she wanted and the Lilly brand encourages you to do the same. She built a business on a spill and she lived in paradise year round. The Lilly Pulitzer brand is a life style and an attitude. It’s you having fun, it’s you being fun.

Westwater Construction Departs The Lake Club In Lakewood Ranch. Westwater Construction announced that they will cease building in The Lake Club when their latest construction project finishes in March of 2016. To date the firm has completed the largest homes in The Lake Club. Westwater is returning to their roots constructing one-off custom waterfront homes typically beginning at $600 a square foot (construction only). CEO Mark Miller states, “Much like everyone, in the downturn we went where the business was. We enjoyed working with Lakewood Ranch and put up some incredible homes.

Now with the recovery of the market we are experiencing the building of a significant backlog for custom waterfront homes, and that is what we are known for. We re-tooled during the downturn and designed some very cutting edge “jewel box” homes in the 3,500 square foot range, thinking this is where the market was heading in The Lake Club for us. We could not have been more wrong as we only sold two homes in that size range and the rest of our customers demanded the larger custom homes that we are known for. While we did sell homes in the $500 per square foot

range, that is not the main market in The Lake Club as most buyers are looking for smaller homes in the $200-250 per square foot range.”

Truffle Infused Beer Takes First Place Students in the “Beer Science 101” class at USF - Sarasota collaborated with upscale Urbani Truffles of New York and Big Top Brewing Company to produce an Italian white truffleinfused German Kölsch-style beer known as “Dark Horse.” The fruits of this class project were recently revealed at a semester ending “Beer and Food” pairing soiree on the USF campus. The truffle-beer was awarded 1st place among the seven teams brewing their own concoctions this semester. The high cost of the truffles mixed with production and marketing expenses mean that a pint of “Dark Horse” will be approximately $200. Not everyone will be able to afford

this sweet nectar but those who can are in for a treat their palate will never forget. The pricey brew was conceived by senior Dennis Metz, with the assistance of fellow students Alexis Brodil and Charlotte Bertha. New York-based Urbani Truffles supplied the truffles used in creating the beer. Sabrina Notarnicola, brand strategist at the company, flew down for the tasting and said Urbani tried making a truffle infused beer a year ago but was unsuccessful. Urbani, satisfied with the end result, said it plans to move forward with a commercial product aimed at affluent markets.

HOLIDAY DETOX: Use your lymphatic system for better health

S

tarting a new year usually means starting a diet or exercise routine. Choosing which route to take or what activities are going to be right for you can be daunting. With so many fad diets and exercise routines out there, why not try a new routine of influencing your body though its immune system. The lymphatic system is a crucial component in health and wellness. It is involved in all aspects of your body’s inner workings and carries out your body’s immune responses through channels that are similar to the circulatory system. The lymphatic system works along with the circulatory system to clean up the waste materials from your body that your blood vessels could not accommodate for. It is also able to absorb larger materials than the blood vessels are able. Attending to your lymphatic system can assist in reducing pain, managing swelling, weight loss, and will help you to restore balance and equilibrium to your body. Learning to live with a lymphatic influence is easy and can be built into your already daily routines. Let’s take a look at a few key points of this great system. The Lymphatic system is an open system meaning it can collect and release fluids. This allows for your immune system to deliver pathogen fighting cells and to remove waste products. What does this mean for your lymphatic techniques? It means there is a system in our body that can be influenced to remove toxins and assist in living a healthy existence. Education is key. By learning about the lymphatic vessels, its route to the circulatory system and alternate pathways, you will see how easily you can adjust how you put on lotions, how you dry yourself off and how to modify many other self-care techniques to improve your immune fighting power! Schedule some time

for an educational session about your specific circumstances. There is no pump for your lymphatic system to move fluid such as the heart does for the circulatory system. For this system to assist in its fluid returning to the heart, it works on pressures of the environment and within your body. The muscles of the body are this systems biggest support. The diaphragm acts as the pump utilizing the suction effect from the diaphragm pulling downwards then returning back to its original position. The muscles of your body press the lymphatic vessels with the help of the skin and assist in moving lymphatic fluid upwards.

Our lymphatic system works on pressures, and because of that we can influence how gravity will take its effect on us. Your lymphatic technique includes the use of manual lymph drainage and compression garments. We have the ability to perform simple hand techniques on ourselves and/or wear specialty garments specifically meant to address our lymphatic system. Call today for a hands on learning session for performing this great stimulating technique to remove toxins. Compression stockings or sleeves are a great non medication alternative to relieving pain and works to reduce with swelling, wounds and varicose veins. Ask for a custom Juzo garment fitting! Last but not least, Be good to your belly. There are many foods that produce toxic waste and put a strain on the lymphatic system. Some of these include refined grains, processed foods, candy, baked goods and many more. Too much sodium – that’s a no-no!

Lymphatic techniques with this in mind include exercises such as abdominal breathing, pilates, yoga and more. Elevation is a great assist for the lymphatic system which makes exercises that are done laying perfect! Try lying on the bed with your legs in the air and draw letters, shapes or just point and flex your feet. So many great exercises that you can do makes it hard to list them all. The benefits of having your own healthcare consultant is that they are knowledgeable in a variety of medical fields and can create an exercise plan that’s just right for you! Gravity plays a large part in our body’s ability to move fluids. What goes down doesn’t necessarily have to go back up. It can get stuck in the tissues further blocking the ability of fluid movement.

Lymphatic technique: Eating raw foods provide important enzymes which break down toxins and promote removal of harmful substances. Look for foods that are anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants. Adding probiotics to your diet can replace or add to the current population of good bacteria that is normally present in the gastrointestinal tract. By adding probiotics to your diet, you can help tip the scale in favor of good bacteria over bad bacteria limiting infections and other problems. And of course, drink more water! Your lymph vessels are full of protein and protein loves water. Keeping hydrated will help your lymphatic system to move freely limiting stagnant fluid and maintaining good circulation.

Take care of your body! Where else are you going to live?!

What Is COOLSCULPTING? Proven Results Without Surgery

Renowned Harvard University scientists, Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD, observed that some children got dimples due to eating popsicles. The idea that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue was the insight behind Cryolipolysis®, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based. CoolSculpting is the innovative cooling process developed by scientists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.

The CoolSculpting procedure is: • • • • • • • • • •

FDA-cleared Non-surgical Safe and effective The world’s #1 non-invasive fat reduction procedure. Those with stubborn fat despite diet and exercise. Uses controlled cooling (Cryolipolysis) to target and kill only these fat cells. In the weeks to follow, these fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. Treated fat cells, once eliminated from the body, are gone for good. The ADA – Americans With Disabilities Act Making Life Better And More Complex

The Americans with Disabilities Act (the ADA) is an “equal opportunity” law for people with disabilities. It was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation. It prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life – to enjoy employment opportunities, to purchase goods and services, and to participate in State and local government programs and services. The ADA was modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It was also modeled after Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Americans with Disabilities Act is intended to protect the rights of people with disabilities. The ADA bans discrimination based on disability in the private sector and the state and local government sectors. It requires access to programs and services, facilities, transportation, employment, and communication. The ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) were issued on the first anniversary of the ADA, July 26, 1991.

ADAAG contains detailed design requirements for accessibility in new construction and alterations. The ADA Amendments Act of 2008 included three titles which made it applicable to three major areas. The first is Employment. The second is Public Services, and the third is Public Accommodations and Services Operated by Private Entities. Employment is outside the scope this article. We are most involved in the latter two in that they deal with physical obstacles to the use and enjoyment of places people go. Historically, there were barriers everywhere to those with disabilities. For example, it was very difficult before that application of the ADA for a person in a wheel chair to ride public transportation, gain access from a parking lot over a curb to a store, get into the store, access the products and services offered, and even access a bathroom. The purpose of the ADA is to remove these barriers from the everyday lives of those with disabilities of all types. The emphasis has been on three things: access to the building, access to the goods and services in the building and access and use of restrooms. While the ADA originally dealt with public services offered by any government or agency services, it has been expanded to include private places that are open to the public. The extent of this expansion

is huge and reaches into all aspects of commercial activity such as stores, restaurants, parks, swimming pools, amusements, theaters, places of lodging, social service center establishments (group homes, halfway houses, shelters, or similar social establishments that provide either temporary sleeping accommodations or residential dwelling units), housing at a place of education, housing at a place of education, assembly areas, and medical care facilities. This list is far from complete. Due to space constraints there are many, many details relating to the ADA that cannot be mentioned here. However, a qualified architect is capable of not only identifying ADA violations and problems but can also design the solutions. Therefore, it is always wise to consult with a knowledgeable expert when dealing with the complexities of the ADA and its application at the state and local level.

stateside, or international clients. According to Christy “The goal of our business model is to be a full service concierge experience for our high end clients. We recently had a person in the entertainment business contact us regarding properties on the West Coast. We arranged for them to fly into Dolphin Aviation, had a car service pick them up and even had a local chef bring dinner to their location. After identifying a property that would work for them, we were able to get them in contact with a local attorney, interior designer, and many other requests that they needed to accommodate the purchase. They requested extreme privacy and we were able to ease their mind with our confidentially agreement and purchase through an LLC.” With over 45 years of combined experience these three agents have the knowledge, experience and proven track record to get the job done. Christy and Jay, brother and sister team, have been selling real estate for 15 years. They have earned 10 designations in the field and continue to stay on top of the changing real estate market. They are also proud to be 4th generation Realtors, following in the footsteps of their father, grandfather and great-grandmother. They are two of the youngest recipients to be inducted into the prestigious RE/ MAX Hall of Fame and consistently ranked in the top 1% of RE/MAX agents worldwide with over $32 million in sales in 2015 alone. Before real estate, Christy was a standout junior player on the Florida Junior Tennis Circuit, and went on to play for the NCAA Division I powerhouse Florida State University. She uses the discipline and drive that made her a fierce and formidable opponent on the tennis court to equal and surpass the sales volume of real estate professionals in the area. Jay grew up playing competitive tennis, went on to play at Florida State University, and competed in professional tournaments. Jay developed a laser focus that eventually led him to another ultra-competitive challenge: real estate sales and speculation. While being interviewed about his real estate career, Travis has continually cited his junior tennis experience as the primary catalyst of his success. He is also an avid fisherman and boater. He has extensive knowledge of the area waterways. This information is extremely valuable to their clients who purchase waterfront property.

Kimberly brings to the table, 15 years of experience and also in leadership positions within her industry. She takes her business serious and believes in value added services. She holds 8 designations with one being Certified Residential Specialist which is a symbol of excellence in residential real estate. Kim has traveled the country for the past twelve years to attend national, state and local real estate conferences to network with the industry finest and learn new laws, marketing and technology to better serve the client. Kim is also a proud member of Women’s Council of Realtors and was local chapter president in 2014. She is a graduate of Eckerd College in St Petersburg and earned a bachelor’s degree in business management with a focus on marketing. Why did this dynamic trio decide to establish the Ultra Luxury Property Group? Kimberly explains, “We saw a need to establish a real estate support system for our clients that goes beyond buying and selling a property.” The concierge service approach offers many advantages: Client confidentially, a list of trusted elite business partners, and VIP customer service. Christy adds “Our group has an extensive data base of high end buyers and sellers including CEO’s, professional athletes, politicians and entertainers. They are busy people and depend on our expertise to make their move stress free.”

Buying A Home in A Competitive Market Inventory of homes for sale in our area is very low. This means buyers will have fewer choices and may be involved in purchasing a home that has several people interested to buy. As a buyer, what can you do to ensure your offer to purchase will be successful? When most people construct an offer, they think about the price they are willing to pay as their “offer”. In reality, an offer needs to be much more comprehensive in order for it to be given serious consideration by the seller. Understanding all of the seller’s motivations will help you structure a strong offer. First, review everything that has been disclosed about the property so you know exactly what you are offering to purchase and its relative value. Disclosures will usually include the age and condition of the roof, air conditioning/heating systems and other key components, history of any problems and how they were resolved. Your Realtor® should contact the listing agent before composing an offer, in order to understand what is important to the seller. While price is important, there may be other considerations from the seller’s perspective. For instance, they may want to remain in the home until a certain date. An offer from a buyer who can accommodate the seller’s needs may be looked upon more favorably. When presenting a price to a seller, show the rationale behind the offered price. Your Realtor® should review sales of similar properties and establish the fair market value of the home today, based on comparable sales in the neighborhood. It is important to make a realistic offer in

When the offer is transmitted to the seller, it should specify a period of time for the seller to consider the offer and respond. Timing of response can be key in a competitive market where multiple offers may be made to buy the same home.

order for the seller to take you seriously. There is no rule of thumb as to how the offer price should be related to the asking price for a property, and each property must be considered on its own merits. Did the listing agent price it above, at, or below fair market price?

Your agent should also “present” the offer to the seller’s agent appropriately. Offers are usually sent via email, but a covering note that gives the seller some background on the buyer may be appropriate, especially if the seller receives several offers.

Your offer to purchase should be made in writing along with all relevant terms, including price, timing and amounts of escrow deposits, cash or mortgage, closing date, inspections to be carried out, responsibility for any repairs needed and any contingencies for the sale.

When other buyers make offers to purchase the same property as you, this is known as a multiple offer situation and requires careful management by your agent. You may not get an opportunity to receive and make counter offers. A seller who is presented with multiple offers may choose to accept one of them, counter offer one of them, or respond to all buyers asking them to submit their “highest and best” offer for seller’s consideration. If this is definitely the “home for you”, I suggest you make a very strong initial offer to give yourself the best possible chance of securing the property.

If you intend to purchase the property in a corporation or trust, but that entity has not yet been formed, the offer should include a clause allowing the buyer to assign the contract to a third party prior to closing. Be prepared to explain why this clause is in the offer, as it may make sellers nervous if they feel you are not fully committed, or plan to “flip” the contract to someone else before closing. The offer should be submitted to the seller’s agent together with proof of your ability to purchase. If you are buying the property with cash, a bank statement or letter from your financial advisor confirming the availability of funds will be adequate. If you are making the purchase with a mortgage, you should have a letter from your lender showing that you are pre-approved for a mortgage for the relevant amount.

As always, be guided by your real estate professional. An experienced, educated Realtor® can be the difference between success or failure in today’s competitive market.

CRUISE SHIP Luxurious SPA Experience Cruise ships take several different approaches to their onboard spas. The newest approach, innovated by Costa, is to turn part of the cruise ship into a “destination spa” where passengers can immerse themselves in the spa experience, as they would in a land-based spa resort.

Specially designed spa cabins create a more Zen in-cabin experience with easy access to the spa facilities. Spa restaurants serve light and healthy cuisine in keeping with the wellness theme. If you want, you can spend nearly your entire cruise wrapped in the relaxing spa atmosphere and enjoying luxurious hair salon facilities. As you lie on a massage table, legs tucked into a soft sheet, hot stones soothing the tired muscles of your back and arms, you will most certainly not be thinking about cruise ship spa ratings. Nonetheless, when you sit down at your computer to research your next cruise vacation, you might very well want to know where to find the best spas at sea.

Celebrity Cruise Line

Found On: Solstice-class ships, Eclipse, Equinox, Reflection, Silhouette & Solstice Standout Features: The Canyon Ranch SpaClub is a superb complex that extends beyond the physical spa to include AquaClass spa cabins, the AquaSpa Cafe and Blu (two dining venues dedicated to healthy fare like smoothies, salads, lean meats and fish).

Inside the Spa: The Canyon Ranch SpaClub itself offers more than 20 exclusive facial and body treatments, such as the Environ Enhancing Vitamin Therapy, which is a powerful treatment created to purify, micro-exfoliate and rehydrate your skin. The Persian Garden is a coed sauna and steam room, with a tropical rain shower and heated relaxation chairs that offer views of the ocean. The spa’s Solarium is the most gorgeous at sea, with two pools and whirlpools, soaring glass ceilings and whimsical light and water shows. A fully stocked and staffed gym sports all the newest fitness machines, as well as a jogging track to get your heart rate up before or after a blissful session in the spa.

Costa Cruise Line

Found On: Costa Serena, Costa Pacifica, Costa Luminosa, Costa neoRomantica, Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, Costa Deliziosa and Costa Diadema Standout Features: Costa’s beautiful Samsara Spa cabins and suites feature bamboo-effect doors and calming color schemes, along with sumptuous bedding, eco-cotton bathrobes, herbal teas, Elemis bath products and a special scent diffusor. Samsara cruisers may dine at the exclusive Samsara Restaurant -- with its focus on a la carte and light menus -- at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inside the Spa: The two-level Samsara Spa -- four levels on Costa Diadema -- sports an Asian-inspired design, complete with rice paper walls, bonsais,

wind chimes, teak Buddhas, lantern lighting and dragons. The facility offers a huge variety of treatments, including proper ayurvedic therapies -- using oils, herbs, salts -- by a qualified practitioner and treatments tailored to men and couples. A Japanese tea ritual ends each spa visit -- not a sales pitch. Cruisers also have access to steam and sauna rooms, sun beds and rainforest showers.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Found On: Freedom-class ships, Independence, Freedom and Liberty of the Seas Standout Features: The spas on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom-class ships stand out for their enormous gym complexes. These are among the largest of any cruise ship fitness center. The ships offer cruising’s first-ever boxing ring; it’s used as much as an advanced aerobics style workout as it is for boxing. Inside the Spa: The spa offers pretty much the usual range of Steiner Leisure treatments: massages (Swedish, hot stone and couples), reflexology, facials and body wraps. Acupuncture is also now available. The salon, tucked off to one side, features hair cutting and styling, manicures, pedicures and teeth whitening.
