Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival

Continues To Grow.

“As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled”

A

recent Economic Impact Report released by Visit Sarasota County indicated that this year’s 31st Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival generated an economic impact of $32 Million dollars for the local area, an increase over $26 Million in 2014. Direct expenditures also showed an increase from $17 Million to $20 Million. From out-of-county attendees surveyed 88.7% indicated that they traveled to the Sarasota area because of the race and 85% of those surveyed plan to attend again next year. “It’s clear from the numbers in our report that thousands of visitors have now made it a tradition to spend their July 4th weekend holiday in Sarasota County to enjoy the races and this annual Festival”, shared Virginia Haley, President of Visit Sarasota County. The Grand Prix Festival and July 4th Bayfront Fireworks are produced by Suncoast Charities for Children, which also experienced an increase in net revenue this year. “With so

Victor Hugo many of the Festival events being free to the public the support received from our generous sponsors is critical for the continuation of this annual event,” said Lucy Nicandri, Festival Director & Executive Director for Suncoast Charities for Children. “The Grand Prix Festival is a prime example of the impact sports tourism brings to this community. Just adding the economic impact results over the past 5 years (not counting the 26 years before that) we’re talking $98.9 Million. That’s a very impressive number,” adds Nicandri. For the first time the races were televised on CBS Sports Network (approx. 60 Million Households) and Fox Sun Sports (approx. 15 Million Households). Next year’s Festival is scheduled for June 25-July 4, 2016. For more information visit www.sarasotapowerboatgrandprix.org. We’ll be milling (racing term) till then! care in Pinellas and Pasco counties, including 120 available for adoption. HEART GALLERY began with a simple idea. Produce an extraordinary portrait of a foster child and it will capture the heart of prospective parents. Their mission is to increase the number of successful adoptions of local children currently in foster care. Heart Gallery programs include the traveling exhibit of professional portraits and personal biographies of children waiting to be adopted, as well as child specific recruitment and support services for the families along all stages of adoption. The HEART GALLARY depends on the generosity of big hearts in the community to make these programs possible and their recent “Celebrate Me Home” event on April 15, 2015 was a celebration of children and forever families. The Tampa Bay Rays stepped up to the plate and opened the gates to Tropicana Field for a fun-filled evening of food, entertainment and fund raising; and I had the great pleasure of attending to present We’ve Got Style’s live action item - LUXURY, LIMO & LUNCH - A Saks Fifth Avenue Fifth Avenue Club Exclusive Shopping Experience. I witnessed “Style with a Cause” at work that night as the auctioneer empowered and inspired extraordinary women into a bidding war, resulting in a second Luxury, Limo & Lunch event being bought; all for the purpose of raising funds for the HEART GALLERY. Asparagus Velouté Cappuccino with Truffle Froth Serves eight

Truffle Froth

3 cups chicken stock 2 Tbsp white roux 3½ cups blanched Asparagus pieces Salt and pepper to taste

4 egg yolks 1 cup heavy cream ½ tsp kosher salt 2 Tbsp truffle oil 2 Tbsp finely chopped parsley

Heat the chicken stock in a small saucepan on medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Whisk in the roux to thicken. Once thickened, cook the sauce, or the velouté, for 5 to 6 minutes until the flour has cooked out. Add the asparagus and cook until just hot. Transfer to a blender and purée on high until bright green. Strain, season then fill glasses close to the top. Pour Truffle Froth on top of each shooter and garnish with a shaved truffle or very thin slice of mushroom.

Lightly froth the egg yolks in a small bowl with a hand held blender. In a heavy saucepan, bring the cream just to a boil then reduce heat to low. Pour a third into the yolks and froth with blender. Slowly add this egg mixture to the saucepan. Immediately begin frothing with the blender in the pan over low heat.

KEEPING AN OPEN MIND. “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” Albert Einstein

L

ife is ever changing yet when it comes to bad habits, we tend to have difficulty changing. We can get stuck in a routine that’s hard to break free from. You try all the things that you know or believe work to help break a habit yet still it lingers. When nothing you try works, it may be time to step out of the box. Having an open mind means you are receptive to new ideas or arguments. Your mind is a powerful tool to use in making change. It can be difficult to control your own thoughts due to beliefs or experiences you may have had in life. Negativity can sit in your subconscious and keep you from moving forward. That’s where hypnosis comes in to help change what you have in your subconscious mind that is stuck. Habits and addictions are all learned behaviors and you can choose to let them take the control and lead you down a path you know you don’t want to go or you can take back your life. Hypnosis is a misunderstood treatment that many could benefit from. Yet how it has been presented in your life or how you perceive hypnosis can hold you back in your journey to wellness. Our perspectives very much affect the way we choose to see our life experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a positive experience with hypnosis in my childhood. My mother was interested in hypnosis and I was able to derive a positive feeling from its use. I like to use hypnosis as a tool to help me control the thoughts in my subconscious that may lead me to stray from what I am working on. It is a technique that you are in control of. You cannot go to a hypnosis session and expect that the hypnotist will change your thoughts.

You have to go into it with an understanding of what it is that you need to change and how it can be placed in your subconscious to enable you to overcome the distracting and negative thoughts that can lead you astray. It can give you a subtle feeling of control in that last breaking moment where you may feel tempted to cheat, feel negative or depressed. Just as other tools, hypnosis must be used consistently for effectiveness.

Recently I met up with an educated and experienced hypnotist, Dr. Janice Coleman. She has devoted over 20 years developing the best programs to meet all your personal needs and goals. One of Dr. Coleman’s proprietary programs is Hypnosis-NLP™. It uses the language and anchoring emotions techniques of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) along with the deep relaxation and suggestions of hypnosis to guide you safely and comfortably toward your goals. Dr. Coleman and I work together to understand my needs to release my bad habit, smoking, that controlled my life. With my permission, she directs my

20 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

thoughts to a positive, healthy outlook, providing me with a tool to use to help release the fears and anxiety that keep me chained to that negative behavior. Using her Doctorate in Curriculum Development from the State University of New York and her training in NLP and Hypnosis education from the World Institute of Cognitive Studies, Dr. Coleman has developed effective programs in Weight Loss, Nutrition, Smoking Cessation, Substance Abuse, and other customized positive change programs to meet the needs of each client. Her motto is: “Where Permanent Changes Happen!” In 2012, Dr. Coleman received specialized training in Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis from Sheila Granger, the innovator of this cutting edge, permanent weight loss solution in England. In this program, Dr. Coleman works with your subconscious mind so it believes you had the gastric band surgery. The surgery tightens the upper part of your stomach with a special plastic band making it the size of a tennis ball. Her subsequent hypnosis sessions reinforce the belief that you feel full with three small, nutritious meals a day. The excess weight releases easily and permanently with no side effects. Dr. Coleman offers consultations and individual hypnosis sessions in her private Sarasota office as well as home visits. You can contact her at: (941) 356-5506 or visit her website: www.InvincibleSolutionsHypnosis.com. Keeping an open mind can change and free your life in a way you would have never expected!

Tips For A Fabulous

Photo Shoot

By Sheila Venancia

Photo: Rick Sieminski Photography, Lisa Sieminski Hair and Make Up: Sheila Venancia Model: Erin Paris

On a recent assignment doing hair and makeup for a photo shoot with Rick Sieminski Photography, I had the opportunity to speak with Rick about tips for a creating a fabulous photo shoot. Here is what he had to say: Type Of Photo Shoot: Fashion (all about the clothes), Glamour (all about the client’s beauty), Boudoir (sexy and suggestive), High School Senior, Headshots, or Lifestyle are the most common types of photo shoot styles. Clearly communicating your ideas and expectations to the photographer early in the process, not upon arriving at the studio or photo shoot location, is imperative to a successful outcome. Wardrobe Selection: Coordinate clothing colors according to the background. A beach shoot would call for light pastels and khakis. A shoot at a park would call for darker colors. The clothing needs to blend nicely with the background so the emphasis is on the subject. Avoid busy patterns and prints. These are not hard, fast, rules. Depending on the model, style of shoot, and artistic vision, these guidelines can and will be broken. Diet: Don’t crash diet before your shoot as it will likely cause you to lose that healthy glow. Avoid greasy and salty

foods at least two days prior to your shoot. This will prevent extra oily skin and bloating. Drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest, and avoid excessive alcohol 48 hours before your shoot. You want to look healthy and refreshed on the day of your shoot, not tired and hung over. Also, avoid beverages that will stain your teeth. Aesthetic Preparation: Depending on your type of shoot, make sure to do any waxing/hair removal several days before the shoot. This will give your skin time for any irritation to disappear. Be sure to have well manicured nails. If you must have a color, keep it light and neutral. The Day Before The Shoot: Make sure your wardrobe is together and everything is free from wrinkles, excessive “fuzzies”, and pet hair/dander. If you must fold your clothing, do so just before leaving for your shoot, and hang them back up immediately after arriving to the studio or photo shoot location.

22 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

The Day Of The Shoot: Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes, to your shoot. The last thing you want are lines imbedded into your skin. If you’re having Professional Hair and Makeup, arrive with freshly cleaned hair (no product), and a clean face. Having Professional Hair and Makeup is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED, as this makes all the difference in your images. This can’t be emphasized enough! You may do your own hair and makeup just fine for everyday wear; but a Professional Hair and Makeup artist is trained, and knows what looks good (and not good) on camera. They know how to make you look your best! Bring light snacks with you as the shoot may take longer than anticipated to get that perfect shot. And maybe most important of all, remember to bring your winning smile and your best attitude! Your energy and positivity will show in your images, and your photo shoot will be a fun and unforgettable experience! Lastly, relax, have a good time and enjoy your shoot! CHEF PAUL MATTISON

Represents Southeast At American Harvest Workshop

C

hef Paul Mattison was one of five chefs in the nation invited to the American Harvest Workshop this past September 12-16 at the prestigious Cakebread Cellars in California. He was the only Chef representing Florida and in fact, named as the only Chef in the Southeast asked to participate in this annual event. The American Harvest Workshop is a celebration of wine and food located in the heart of the Napa Valley. Now in its 29th year, this is an intense “hands on” program created by Jack and Delores Cakebread to learn more about the marriage of food and wine. The other four chefs attending were from the award-winning Peninsula Hotel in Chicago, Michael’s on Naples in Long Beach, the Legal Seafood restaurant in Boston and the Willow Creek restaurant in Evergreen, Colorado. “Great trip!” remarked Chef Mattison. “This was an inspiring collaboration of several individuals beaming with passion and talent for the industry that I love!” He came away from Napa believing in the motto: “If you want to go fast...go alone. If you want to go far...go together. The Cakebread family are pioneers and leaders in the wine world, and it was an honor to be with them!”

Just a BasketCase

P

oor, living in a laundromat as a young child, Lori Davis did not go without. Her mother worked two jobs to make ends meet and keep food on the table. Growing up Lori didn’t comprehend the sacrifices her mother made. With a tear running down her cheek Lori reflects, “I have the smartest, talented, most caring mother one could have. At that time I didn’t think so. It took age and maturity for me to appreciate everything.” Now her mother manages a law office. How things change. As fate would have it Lori gained a stepfather and became a Texas military brat. Her stepfather brought strict military style rule to the household. “My stepfather taught me not to take no for an answer. He taught me discipline and aggressiveness.” Another key influencer in young Lori’s life was her grandmother who played a significant role helping to raise her. She taught Lori baking and most importantly love, which Lori wholeheartedly embraced. “I’m a lot like her,” she says beaming. Timid Mother, Military Dad, Sweet Grandmother. Was this combination the impetus for her “I want to achieve it all” attitude?

27 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

At age 17 Lori set out on her own. She shares, “My mom said I came out of the womb running. I never needed anyone, but wanted to please my parents.” Lori started her career with Marriott, ultimately climbing to Assistant General Manager. “Marriott taught me how to be a manager from the corporate side. They also taught me the hospitality side of the business.” Leveraging that experience, Lori ended up at the Ritz Carlton as the head event planner, overseeing all of the wedding planners. While working, Lori managed to earn an Associates of Arts degree in Culinary Arts & Pastry Design from the Western Culinary Institute. Continuing, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Oklahoma State University with a major in Business Marketing and minor Public Relations. Always an overachiever, at age twenty Lori became a parent and obtained her pilots license.

A Certified Wedding Planner by the U.S. Wedding Association of Texas rounds out her formal education. Eight years ago Lori met the love of her life, Randy Lane. Traveling back to Texas to visit, she met Randy at a party. “He wasn’t my type,” she says laughing. Randy soon began continually showing up. “I couldn’t get rid of him!” Like turned to respect that blossomed into love, a fairytale ending. “Now I’ll never let him go!” she says with a twinkle in her eyes. Not yet finished, Lori alerts me to the fact that there is more than one love in her life. The doting mother takes over and I quickly learn it’s her daughter Erin Bufford, mother of her lovely grandbaby, Madelyn Rogers, and step son, Austin Lane. Five years ago the two made Sarasota their home. It was Randy, who in the hallway of the home, playfully commented to Lori, “You’re a basket case!” Lori replied

how Randy was a genius, but something was missing. Hence she said, “Let’s add Justa, because I am JustaBasketCase!” Now you know the story! JustaBasketCase was born. Lori beams, “The truth is I love what I do and who I am. I have been doing weddings and events for almost twenty five years in some form or fashion and wouldn’t change a thing! I’m a wedding and event planner for all occasions.” From weddings, events and sporting functions to custom gift baskets, bridal favors, custom gift wrapping, to linen, chair & table rentals, JustaBasketcase does it all. The list of accolades for this top planner include: Voted #1 Caterer in Tarrant City, Texas; Multiple Blue Ribbons for her pies; Top 3 Wedding Planner by Wedding Wire; Top 5 Ringling Wedding Planner and Top Select with Nuevo. Asking what makes event planning challenging Lori beams, “People want the final chapter of a story book. The problem is it took 2,900 pages to get there. You need someone with my personality because it’s not a Jennifer Lopez movie! There’s the location, permits, licenses, rentals, invites, deposits and more. It’s all the little details that make the story book ending. Events are what I am good at, not who I am. It’s a passion, not a job!” What does someone with unending energy do to unwind? “I love cooking and taking cooking classes,” Lori says smiling. “I’m a homebody. I love to read books. A three book night is my way to unwind! I also collect books,” she adds. Let’s not forget that Lori has her sights set on an instrument rating as flying is another of her passions. JustaBasketCase. At the end of the day Lori Davis just loves putting a smile on everyone’s face!

What are the CLIENT/OWNER Trends Now? By Rebeca Chavarria

T

he architecture industry has inevitably developed through the years, from technology to building materials. However, there is one aspect that has also evolved that may not be as obvious, but just as important within the industry, and that is the clientarchitect relationship. The term relationship is used because projects can range from months to years of communication, so the architect and clients typically get to know each other well. Potential clients looking to remodel or build a new structure are looking for architects that go beyond the normal customer service requirements. The investment is both financial and personal so it is crucial that there is understanding between the two parties. To the client, the architect’s role is no longer as a vendor, but a partner that will understand and pursue their unique requirements within the allowable standards of the many building codes. This role as partner involves a number of give-and-take scenarios for both sides. Looking at the big picture, the client must trust that the architect will produce documents that both meet the program as well as fit within the agreed budget. In detail, the client must trust the architect’s experience and knowledge when looking to resolve an issue. On the flip side, the architect must stay true to the project intent set forth by the client

Although every case is different, clients look for innovation, creativity, and best practices to be used. Within contemporary architecture, for example, there are certain characteristics that can be seen in many projects that define the style, such as materials, colors, window sizes and placement. However, clients look to the ingenuity of the architect so that their structure is one of a kind. Part of the innovation recently is the use of Building Information Modeling, or BIM, to model projects in 3D. This has been a revolutionary step in bridging the visual gap between owner and architect because it allows the client to see spaces in a medium they can understand better, which usually creates more client involvement and excitement along the way. In order to have a successful project come to life, a capable communication between the architect and contractor is essential. The architect must place his or

her liaison cap on to ensure that the flow of information from client to contractor runs smoothly. Even the best run projects come across some difficulties along the way, it is the nature of construction, but it goes without saying that clients look to the architect and the rest of the team to come up with efficient solutions to avoid panic and further complications. As it was touched on briefly before, the architect is more than a just a designer. There are countless roles to play and responsibilities to manage for all parties involved. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that pre-consultations occur to ensure both the client and architect are a good fit for each other. Time, patience, communication, and trust go a long way to create timeless architecture. Do Tourists Buy Homes?

I

was approached recently by the Florida Association of Realtors® and asked to present at their annual convention in Orlando. They wanted my presentation to discuss ways in which my fellow Realtor® members could convert tourists into home buyers. The invitation spurred me to do some research and think about this conundrum.

Do tourists actually buy homes? The answer is a resounding yes! People who discover our beautiful area as a vacation destination often become homeowners and members of our community. The thought processes they go through to achieve this are many and varied. Having spent a relaxing and enjoyable vacation in Florida, many tourists decide to make it a regular destination, and they may purchase a vacation home so they can enjoy more time in “a place of their own”, bring the family, and visit more frequently without the worry and cost of hotel accommodation. Many vacation home buyers then take the leap to become winter, or full time residents.

By Patricia Tan

Here is an example of one of our real estate customers who did just that. They discovered Manasota Key while visiting, bought a condo there and used is for vacations over a few years. As their jobs allowed them to spend more time in the area, they wanted to have more options for activities, entertainment, dining and shopping. They sold the condo on Manasota Key and bought a condo on Siesta Key. When they retired, they wanted to spend five to six months a year in Florida, so they sold the condo on Siesta Key and bought a house in Sarasota on the mainland. As Michigan’s cooler climate began to take its toll, they made a decision to move here full time – they traded their house here for something larger, and are now happily year-round members of our community. That initial visit to Manasota Key has a lot to answer for!

buyers will also want to be assured that an area is economically and financially stable, and has good transportation links to support trips for business and pleasure. Florida Trend magazine published some research on international visitors who bought homes in Florida. They looked at tourists who visited our State in 2012 and ranked the top 20 countries by number of visitors. They then ranked the same countries by the number of home buyers they generated in 2013. The research showed that the top 5 countries which sent tourists to Florida were also the top 5 countries for overseas home buyers. Country

The things that draw a tourist to our area are not always the reasons they decide to buy here. While the natural beauty, beaches, golf courses, theme parks and sports may draw people here for the first time, they are just a few of the reasons they decide to buy a home here. A visitor who is looking to set up home will show interest in other aspects life in Florida.

Yes – tourists do buy homes here and we welcome them as part-time or full-time residents on a regular basis!

The standard and availability of health care takes on more importance. Diversity of cultural activities throughout the year may be a major consideration. Depending on their ages and family profile, schools and education may be key influencers. Prospective home

Can An Expert Help You Assess The Causes Of A Fall? By William Henry, PhD

A better alternative is to depend on hard, objective data based on violations of law that can be easily be defined, applied to the facts, and upon which there can be little or no dispute.

In many slip and fall cases there are multiple aspects of a site that contribute to the accident and resulting injury. Can an expert help you assess how the physical conditions contributed to the accident? The answer is, YES. Consider a typical hypothetical fact situation. Let us assume that a young lady and her husband go to see a movie at the local multiplex. As she climbs the stairway to her seat her foot slips off the front edge of a step and she falls and as a result she suffers severe injury. In due course she contacts an attorney to look into a claim against the theater for damages. The attorney considers her story and decides she needs to look into the physical nature of the location of the fall. An experienced personal injury attorney will want to conduct a very thorough investigation and should there be a chance that noncompliance with a law of some sort contributed to the injury she will look for an expert to assess the site. Some experts provide “best practice” opinions based on industry standards. However, such opinions are just that – opinions. They are not based on objective fact. Any number of “best practices” opinions can be argued in any given case.

The ideal expert will be someone highly experienced in architecture, design and the various codes that apply thereto. The expert will collect the pertinent data about the site including its location, its nature, the age of structures involved and the physical condition of the accident location. Depending on the city, county and state in which the injury occurred a number of different codes might apply. Each state generally has a building code, but may also have an accessibility code based on the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Fair Housing Act or the International Building Maintenance Code may apply as well as others. The age of the structure or the date of any modifications to it will determine which version of a given code will apply, since the codes were adopted and modified at different dates and have different effective dates. Once the expert has collected the site data and has determined which code or codes apply, all of the evidence will be applied to the codes to determine the existence of any violations of code provisions. Particular attention will be paid to violations which contributed to the injury in some way. Using our hypothetical, one might find that there were problems with the design or construction of the stairway treads

or risers or that the lighting along the darkened theater stairway was deficient. Each issue may fall under a separate code which will be sorted out by the expert. The expert will also determine, based on all the available information, to what extent each code deficiency may have contributed to the injury. In some situations a combination of deficiencies will come together as a whole to create the injurious condition. In others deficiencies will each contribute separately and individually. In either case the expert will determine the extent to which each deficiency contributed or in what way each combined with others to create the unsafe condition. The sole purpose of all of this is to provide the attorney the information that will allow her to establish a strong theory upon which to base the case. Depending on the desires of the attorney the expert will convey his opinion to her orally, in a written report or sworn affidavit. The expert will also be available to testify in depositions or at trial. There is no substitute for strong, objective evidence upon which to base a personal injury case. Your expert can provide that and substantially increase the chance of success.
