hile we had a fun run with REAL’s flipping book format it’s off to something new and different with the next edition. As one can imagine the flipping book was not intuitive to a designer or the printer. What was right facing became left facing. Pages are literally upside down and so on. Just a bit of controlled confusion, yet fun!

THE COLOR OF YOU

As a Fashion Stylist/Image Consultant I specialize in Personal Style Concepts. What is Personal Style? “It is the triumph of individual style. It’s all about you, the very special and unique you. It’s about finding your own natural style, the look that best compliments your personality and lifestyle.” Personal Style is not just about what to where, but how to wear it. Style, Fit and Color is key for creating a personal style that best represents your qualities, attributes, and self-confidence.

I

n this REAL Style issue I would like to talk about the importance of COLOR, because identifying your true color palate is a very important aspect of defining your personal style. Did you know color has the power to enhance or detract from your personal appearance, to lift or depress the spirit, and to carry messages to others?

It’s true, color has a psychological impact on the person viewing it. RED – commands power and energy. It’s the color of creation and promotes vitality, passion, warm hearts, love and caution. BLUE – expresses serenity and peace. It’s the color of happiness. It manifests pleasure, joy, serenity and good fortune. YELLOW – radiates harmony and calmness. It symbolizes perfection and has a stimulating effect. GREEN – is resurrection and represents life, hope, renewal, pleasantness and peace. PURPLE – expresses power and creativity. It represents majesty. ORANGE – conveys a confident and outgoing nature. It represents health, wholeness and the heart meeting the mind in perfect balance. BLACK – is the absence of all colors. It prevails a sense of sinister, a certain mystery, the unknown and the unseen. It may

provoke a depressive effect of sadness, while WHITE – is the color of light and conveys a pleasurable feeling of virginity, purity and heavenly peace.

Color awareness will definitely enhance your appearance. In the correct tone of color your eyes will sparkle and blemishes and wrinkles will seem less noticeable. You will look rested and assured of yourself. COLOR not only can change your look, it can change your outlook. Just ask Stacey Goes, the “Artist of Color”. No one knows more about COLOR than Stacey. The dominant force in Stacey’s work, no matter what the medium, is color, as shown here in her paintings titled “Red Blooming Flower & Riding Day.” Using a primary color palette, images appear organically through her delicate manipulation of paint and change with the natural light of day. Stacey paints with “Riding Day” passion. Words cannot describe

12 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

her paintings; her paintings are an expression of what she may be feeling at the time and represented with color. Stacey states “color is something that you can sense, feel and appreciate in its true value.” Sparking Imaginations and inspiring creativity in others is Stacey’s greatest elation. She continues to teach color theory and mixing to aspiring artists of all ages. If a picture is worth a thousand words, Stacey has composed an epic novel through her work, which is currently showing at Art Avenue, 3501 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota FL 34239. Stacey Goes reminds us in her paintings to “surround ourselves with the colors we love.” Let’s all take Stacey’s advice and create a Personal Style with COLOR. I encourage you to take the first step toward creating your best image through the use of color. Contact me for a color analysis. The knowledge that you will gain will help you to enhance your natural good looks by selecting a wardrobe and makeup that harmonizes with your unique coloration. “Wearing the correct colors will change your appearance and simplify your life!

I feel Greek food and lamb are nearly synonymous so it was a perfect twist to add baby lamb chops to the more traditional Greek salad. The Tzatziki Sauce is also a complement. Put it all together and you have a fun dish full of different textures and flavors.

Road to Wellness, Part 1.

ARE YOU A FOODIE?

A

“foodie” is a person who has a refined interest in food. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger, says wikipedia. org. Agreed Wikipedia, I am a foodie! I have a refined interest in food to supply me with the right nutritional content and chose to eat out of a need for those reasons rather than convenience. And so should you! With summer on its way, many people are looking forward to upcoming bikini beach days and have dieting in mind. What I have learned over the years from being in the healthcare field and managing personal health issues is that sometimes you need to follow a routine developed by you personally versus trying to fit yourself into someone else’s form. It can be very hard to stick to someone’s version of normal levels or average portion size on a particular diet because you are your own unique person with your own level of nutrient need. A plan based upon percentages of someone else’s normal won’t work for you. There are also those diets that will tout being healthy and natural yet they set you up on a routine where you are taking supplements to supply you with the nutrients you need. Such drastic changes or restrictions can set you up for failure before you even begin. Someone once told me, You can do anything you want, you just have to take the time to “Learn it”. I feel the need to add, and you have to “Live It”. Get educated on what you eat and why you are putting something into your body. Incorporate it into your life so that it is a daily occurrence. With practice comes skill and ease. One of the first things to do is to see where your nutritional needs are by getting bloodwork. Before making any

significant food changes you should always work with your doctor (I prefer an Integrative Medical Practitioner) and get detailed bloodwork drawn. You are going to want to ask your doctor about a comprehensive blood draw vs routine and one that includes a complete vitamin and thyroid panel. Annual or routine tests may not provide all the information you may need to successfully manage your specific deficiencies. You will also need to become educated on what these values will mean for you and your symptoms. I included a thorough thyroid test because it can be THE piece to the puzzle for many, women particularly, as the values for this test are in controversy. Labs appear to state higher normal values than most specialists will agree with. In my instance, at least 4 years had gone by before anyone fully addressed it. Thyroid testing usually consists of measuring TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland. It tells the thyroid gland when it needs to make and release thyroid hormones into the blood. This does not tell you the level of the thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. Asking to check these levels is how you will know your thyroid is working well. Based on the bloodwork and vitamin panel you will be able to see what your body is lacking. Usually the foods that you crave, minus the gluten and over cooking, are the foods that would have provided the nutrients your body is lacking. For example craving salmon could mean a deficiency in selenium or B12 which could be related to

hypothyroidism. Don’t just go by what a labs “normal” value is. Always look at the high and low values and how they interrelate with other values. Also, go by how you are feeling and what deficiencies could be contributing to those feelings. When starting to add supplements or food changes, be aware of reaction between nutrients. Vitamins and minerals work together so sometimes if there is a deficiency in areas like magnesium and calcium, just by adding magnesium, you may increase your calcium supply. If you weren’t aware of that, you may end up adding too much calcium to your diet. And did you know lack of magnesium mimics a host of health problems such as fibromyalgia, back pain, tendonitis, osteoporosis and many other health problems? Learning and attention, as usual, is key. Finding your way to a nutrient based food style can feel like a miracle cure once it is blended into your life. Got anemia? Boost your red blood cell count with Beets and Blackberry juiced by you or as a smoothie helps build red blood cells! Go Organic! Check out next month’s Part 2: Finding Nutrients. Strategies to take the next step towards a nutrient based food style!

The New 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera

Ultimate Performance Meets Tasteful Luxury

3.2647 in

By Vincent Catena Porsche Certified Brand Ambassador Suncoast Porsche

The new 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera is taking performance and everyday usability to new heights. Innovative flatsix engines derived from four decades of turbocharging used in racing not only make this the fastest 911 Carrera ever, but also provide abundant torque for superior passing power. The completely new engine generation featuring twin-turbo technology provides a 20 hp increase compared to the previous models. The 3.0 liter engine in the standard Carrera now develops 370 hp. Using turbochargers with modified compressor wheels, a model-specific exhaust system, and a different tune for the engine management system, the 911 Carrera S delivers 420 hp from the same displacement. Many exterior features of the 911 Carrera have been visually refined from new headlights with four-point daytime running lights to integrated door handle recesses, a redesigned rear deck lid with vertical louvers, and new rear lights – including the characteristic four-point brake lights. The new standard Porsche Communication Management system with a multi-touch display offers an expanded range of functions and simplified usability.

The new 911 models also boast impressive performance: the 911 Carrera CoupÊ with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds – making it two tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The 911 Carrera S with PDK and Sport Chrono Package needs just 3.7 seconds (also 0.2 s faster). Both models reach higher top track speeds: the 911 Carrera is now able to reach 183 miles per hour, while the 911 Carrera S can achieve up to 191 miles per hour.

“Once again, everything is at stake. Setting a new standard. Creating a Sports Car like one never before seen. A Sports Car that has fascinated for generations. A vehicle that is our passion. The new 911.”

When equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the 911 Carrera now comes with a mode switch on the steering wheel, derived from the hybrid map switch in the 918 Spyder. The mode switch consists of a rotary dial with four positions for the driving modes Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual. Depending on the optional equipment installed in the car, the Individual setting allows drivers to configure their own specific vehicle setup for the chassis, Auto Start/Stop system, PDK shifting strategy, and Sport Exhaust System. On models equipped

with the PDK transmission, the mode switch has a “Sport Response” button, which pre-conditions the drivetrain for maximum acceleration. The uniqueness of the new 911 Carrera stems from its ability to blend refined everyday comfort with exceptional performance. The new Porsche 911 Carrera models are available now at Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota, 5005 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34231, or call (941) 923-1700.

By Sheila Venancia

The Glamour Of EYELASHES Does it feel like everyone from celebrities to your next door neighbor has long, luscious lashes these days? There’s no doubt about it..... Eyelashes are having a moment right now. If you are thinking of joining this growing trend, eyelash extensions are a luxurious and improved alternative to false eyelash strips.

W

hat is the big difference between false eyelash strips and eyelash extensions?

Traditional false or strip eyelashes are arranged in a prefabricated strip that is glued in to place right on your eyelid, just above your natural eyelash. You can buy individual lashes or eyelash strips at any drugstore or retail beauty supply store. Besides natural hair colors, they often come in not-so-natural fun colors, patterns, designs and some even have glittering crystals. The glue used in their application is meant to be a temporary adhesive. They are cheap and efficient but may fall off as the day or evening progresses. If you do not let them fall off on their own, they must be removed with great care to prevent removing any natural eyelashes that has been caught up in the adhesive glue used to apply the eyelash strip. In summary, strip eyelashes simply do not look like your natural eyelashes. Because the adhesive for false or strip eyelashes is applied directly on the skin, there is a much higher potential for eye irritation. Long-term damage to your natural eyelashes can result after prolonged use of false strip eyelashes or improper removal. Also, sleeping with false strip eyelashes can result in infections to the eyelid gland. In comparison, eyelash extensions look and feel remarkably like your own. They

are customized for you, individually applied directly to your existing natural eyelashes, and not your eyelid skin. They also feel almost weightless and are soft to the touch. Eyelash extensions, if applied properly, look completely natural, thick and luxurious. Unlike the glues used for the traditional strip lashes, the adhesives used for eyelash extensions create a longlasting, natural bond that won’t lose its effectiveness when you shower, swim or sweat. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about premature lash shedding with eyelash extensions like you would with false strip eyelashes. In the aroma and on the palate you will find an abundance of ripe fruit flavors such as; black current, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, and black cap jam. Thermage

is a non-invasive procedure that helps to tighten and contour your skin Depending on your condition, this can be done with a single treatment. Thermage stimulates your body to produce new collagen delivering subtle and natural looking results on and off the face. A revolutionary treatment for aging skin, Thermage uses focused radio-frequency energy to strengthen collagen in your skin for a smooth, sleek look that can help you feel years younger. Thermage remodels the collagen in wrinkled skin.

M

eet Gail Coleman, the founder of Estetika Skin & Laser Specialists. Through her leadership and determination, Estetika is the only Black Diamond Thermage and Fraxel Provider in Milwaukee, WI and Sarasota, FL, the only CoolSculpting Center of Excellence and a Premier Crystal award winning CoolSculpting provider in Sarasota and Wisconsin. I ask Gail what makes Estetika different? “Experience, education and our safety record. We have performed more non-surgical facelifts (Thermage) and cryolypolysis (CoolSculpting) procedures than any provider in the Milwaukee or Sarasota markets,” she says proudly. Born Gail Ann Martin, she grew up on the north side of Kenosha, WI, the second of four children. Her father was a laborer for Wisconsin Natural Gas Company and, with drive, worked his way up the corporate ladder as the children were growing up. He taught Gail that there are no obstacles in life, only those we create. Gail shares, “My father taught me that I could be anything I wanted to be.” Her stay at home mother was a self-taught professional seamstress who instilled a strong moral compass and a drive for perfectionism in young Gail. “My mother’s influence has served me well in my music career and in my cosmetic dermatology career,” she reflects. Even with the family’s modest means the children enjoyed a private education along with music education as part of their childhood experiences.

Playing piano and singing are a few of Gail’s favorite activities

Gail attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Mary D. Bradford H.S. with high honors, a tribute to her parent’s beliefs and guidance. Continuing with the determination imparted by her parents she earned a Bachelor Degree of Music from Lawrence University and later a Master Degree of Physician Assistant Studies from Marquette University. With a sad note in her voice Gail reflects, “My parents passed away within six months of each other. It was a very sad period for all of us.” Gail started out teaching voice and piano lessons, both in private and at elementary/middle school in the general music education program. To this day Gail continues to sing and play piano, as evidenced by the baby grand piano just outside her living room. Making a name for herself, Gail was recruited by State Farm to run her own agency. She assembled the pieces and ran a successful agency in Delafield, WI, for ten years. Fate would then intervene. Her husband at the time suffered from a rare liver disease, had a liver transplant and spent 6 months in the hospital in recovery. During his hospital stay it reignited a passion that Gail always had in medicine. ”I began taking refresher science courses to follow my lifelong passion of becoming a MD. After much discussion with my husband we collectively decided Physician Assistant was the safer and quicker path to take rather than medical school,” she remarks. Unfortunately her husband would not share in her journey, dying of post-transplant lymphoma three weeks prior to Gail starting Physician Assistant School. Left with a 9 year old daughter and 5 year old son her life was turned upside down. “The three of us rallied through the tough times, I completed my degree and embarked on my medical career with a start in Emergency Medicine.”

After 3 years of ER experience, Gail began her lifelong dream in cosmetic dermatology, working with a number of local Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists in Wisconsin. In 2006 she branched out on her own and started Estetika Skin & Laser Specialists. “I found the need to do things my way, the natural way. I bucked the norm of forcing Botox and fillers on everyone that walked through our door. I wanted to do things safely, naturally and without risk,” she quips. Continuing she adds, “I already lived a life of risk after losing my husband to a 1% chance of post-transplant lymphoma. I wanted things different for my patients. Because of my philosophy we have become a leading force and role model in the field of cosmetic dermatology.”

28 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

Gail’s interest in treating the skin began during her Physician Assistant training as one of her electives was in Plastic Surgery. With that elective and 3 years of experience in the Emergency Room, Gail found she had a high aptitude for suturing and most importantly for fine motor, intricate procedures, something that she enjoys doing everyday now. Smiling Gail adds, “The most important personal satisfaction that I get from practicing cosmetic dermatology is seeing my work walking around like mobile billboards. Our patients are so much happier with their refreshed, healthy natural looking skin.” The industry is not without its own challenges with the need to keep

ahead of the ever changing technology. Gail states, “We evaluate and educate ourselves on everything that hits the market, whether good or bad, to stay state of the art. Procedures are becoming faster, safer and more comfortable than ever before.” As many are, Gail was drawn to Sarasota by her best friend from grade school who relocated to Sarasota taking a position at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in pediatrics. “I visited her in Sarasota often and fell in love with the beauty of the water and fine arts offered here.” A very familiar story. Since moving to Sarasota and starting her second Estetika location, Gail’s philanthropic efforts have found her contributing to numerous charity events such as Wine Women and Shoes, Girls Inc. Porch Light, Ringling School of the Arts, and Pine Dinner at Selby Gardens. With a busy practice how does Gail unwind? With no hesitation she parts with “I sing and play the piano to relax. I am a gourmet cook and love throwing dinner parties! For exercise I love biking, boating, sailing, kayaking, water skiing and paddle boarding. I am a water nut. I have lived on the water since 1986 and intend to stay on the water forever!” Come visit Gail Coleman at Estetika Skin & Laser Specialists for glowing results. You owe it to yourself. The Architect’s Role In CONSTRUCTION The public’s perception of an architect is often quite simple. Of course the real world can be quite different than traditional perceptions.

T

he public’s perception of an architect is often quite simple. Of course the real world can be quite different than traditional perceptions. The simplest perception of an architect is a person hired to design a structure by the future structure’s owner, who also hires a contractor to undertake its construction. There are situations in which this perception is totally accurate, but generally only in the simplest situations such as a party desiring to build a home or place of business. However, many projects are much more complex. Commercial projects can involve many complex issues some of which might include land acquisition, zoning and

land use issues, and compliance with many different applicable building codes, other regulatory laws and ordinances. The relationship of the architect to the owner will vary. It may depend on the scope of skills offered by the architect. Some architects are purely designers, perhaps even just glorified draftsmen. Others may be artists who provide skills that can lead to the design of very creative and original projects. There are architects who have obtained education and experience in planning, which relates to the overall relationship of the project with its neighborhood and sometimes the community as a whole. The complexity of a project can cause it to involve not only the architect

and contractor, but may also require subcontractors and consultants and perhaps even attorneys. A project may require a project manager and/or a construction manager. In some cases the architect may play those roles, may be hired to oversee those who do, or work as part of team with them. Some projects are so complex that no one person can deal with all of the moving parts, hence the need for some or all of the parties mentioned. There are, of course, firms that offer all of the needed services in a one-stop-shop environment. An owner or developer may hire such a firm to oversee every aspect of a project’s development. In some cases such firms may even engage in their own projects, thus becoming the owner and/or developer. The role of the architect has evolved in the same way that the scope and complexity of projects have grown. These changes have created the need in some cases for specialists who deal with limited aspects of a given project and have limited the place for the architectural generalist.

The Changing Face Of INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE

A

s we wave good bye to our winter visitors, we hope they enjoyed our balmy, sunny shores, and that they will be back again. While many of those visitors come here from the cold northern States, we still welcome a large number from other countries - Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and even as far away as Australia and South Africa, to name a few. In the past, many of these international visitors, just like their American counterparts, have fallen in love with our area and start to think about purchasing a second home or investment property here.

cash resources in British Pounds. At today’s exchange rate of approx $1.40, the cost of this home in Sterling would be £357,000. Just two years ago the exchange rate was $1.68 and this same house would have cost only £298,000. If this same buyer makes a 30% deposit and finances the remainder of the home purchase, he stands to benefit from repaying the mortgage early, when currency rates move in his favor. Using the same two exchange rates mentioned above, the home would now cost the

They still do this, but things are changing . . . The strength of the U S Dollar has led many prospective foreign buyers to think twice about if and how they might purchase a property here. Not to be deterred by currency movement however, many foreigners still choose to buy, but they may buy in a different way. In recent years the majority of purchases made by overseas buyers have been made with cash. Their home currency’s weakness against the U.S. Dollar has caused them to rethink this strategy and look for ways to minimize the risk of currency movement. Many of these buyers are now looking to finance their home purchase here, and I am pleased to say we have a lot of local lenders who offer foreign national mortgages. These mortgages typically require a down payment of 30-35%. The buyers must prove their financial standing in their home country and show they are able to make the necessary repayments. Consider the British buyer who wishes to purchase a home at $500,000. He has

buyer £107,000 ($150,000 at exchange rate of $1.40) deposit plus £208,000 ($350,000 at exchange rate of $1.68), or a total of £315,000. Even allowing for monthly payments on the mortgage, this is still a significant saving from the £357,000 the home would cost today. Mortgage rates are still low, and are much less volatile than currency rates, and the buyer stands to benefit from investing the balance of his cash while waiting for the right time to repay the mortgage. Buyers who bought homes here when prices were lower AND their home currency was strong AND that currency has now weakened, stand to gain a lot if they sell their Florida property now, and repatriate funds to their home

country. In fact, we have seen a number of Canadians selling homes during this past winter season, fully anticipating they will buy another home here, when the currency rate is more favorable to them. The Canadian who bought a $500,000 home here in 2011, when property prices were considerably lower and when the Canadian Dollar was worth $1.04, actually paid CAD481,000. Let’s assume the home price has not appreciated and it sells for $500,000 today. The Canadian Dollar now stands at $0.77 so the gain on currency alone would be CAD149,000. Add that to a conservative increase in the home price to say $650,000 over the last four years, and our Canadian friend could be sending back CAD844,000 – a total profit of CAD363,000. If he returns in the future to buy the same home back at say US$750,000 when the Canadian Dollar has returned to parity with US$ the same home is going to cost him CAD750,000 leaving CAD94,000 in his Canadian bank account! More than enough to cover seasonal rental costs between selling and buying. It is easy to say the strength of the U.S. Dollar today will slow down international buyer activity, but as we can see by the examples above, people will still find a way to enjoy warm winters with us on the west coast of Florida.
