s the wind picks up slightly, seas turn to glass calm, and skies remain that tropical blue it’s evident that high season is upon us here in Phuket. With that comes some exciting events, New Year’s Eve parties and a whole new year to look forward to. One of the stand-out showcases in Thailand is Pimex, the Phuket International Boat Show which runs from 7 – 10 January. Hosting the event, the Royal Phuket Marina will showcase over 50 yachts and more than 100 luxury brands exhibiting the latest technologies, boys’ toys, luxury cars, watches, high-end real estate and all washed down with a refreshing amount of chilled Thai beers. The Boardwalk is the place to be and be seen during the show and while the waterfront restaurants and bars are gearing up for a fantastic four days of entertainment there will be a number of Boat Show parties on yachts and around the marina. This growing trend of luxury events and parties dotted throughout the year is firmly establishing Phuket as an all-year round destination for those who want to play hard and work hard, get out on to the water or simply just kick back and relax on the beach. New Year’s Eve on the Island: Where to Go?

e are only a few weeks away from New Year's Eve, the busiest holiday season in Phuket. "What are you doing for nye?" Is still one of the biggest questions for most expats and visitors on the island. Many still don't know that the famous Nikki beach Phuket on Layan Beach closed down and will soon reopen under the Dream hotel brand, keeping most of the staff from the old Nikki Beach and Xana Beach Club with Attica. Baan Rim Pa, one of Phuket's oldest and most famous Thai restaurants. It's a superb location to eat delicious traditional Thai dishes whilst overlooking Patong bay and its fireworks; definitely a treat for New Year's Eve. A few seconds away you can find Acqua restaurant, probably my favorite gourmet Italian restaurant on the island. Alessandro, the chef, will guide you through an experience of Sardinian and Italian flavors that will leave everyone speechless. At Isabella Yachts we often choose Acqua for exquisite yacht food catering. If you want to have a proper New Year's Eve dinner and a late party, but want to avoid the traffic, your best option is to dine directly in Patong, the island's party town. Higher restaurant, conveniently located on the 5th floor of Phuket's number 1 nightclub Seduction, has a vast selection of Thai, Western, Sushi or even vegetarian menus, all prepared by famous Chef Ronnie Macuja. The prices are affordable with the best views of Bangla road around. It was rated one of the top 10 restaurants on Tripadvisor and is most likely my first choice for New Year's Eve this year.

The Legend continues

ne of the early characters on the restaurant scene in Phuket was Tom McNamara a very alive American who had a small white wooden cottage on a cliff overlooking the northern end of Patong. He held dinner parties and friends convinced him to open a restaurant and just over 25 years later that restaurant with just 32 seats is the landmark Thai restaurant called Baan Rim Pa that serves Royal Thai cuisine. Tom had help from friends in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok and that included Khun Das who runs the place still today and is now a shareholder along with Tom's widow Khun Pensri and 2 children from previous marriages Whilst Tom passed away about 8 years ago, his approach to menus, service layout and most details is still carried on. The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" probably applies very much to Tom's vision and the evolution of Baan Rim Pa. General Manager, Khun Das is very much thee guardian of that vision. Even to the extent of the color of the railings. He really is an amazing low key guy who knows all the detail and is always around overseeing things So is the Legend Tom McNamara or the restaurant he created back in March 1990? I will let you decide So Baan Rim Pa #2 or Baan Rim Pa Kalim has just opened just 1.8 Km further north but with probably better views and higher ceilings. It has seating for 250 spread over 3 levels, 2 bars, the famous grand piano, a wine cellar the equal of the original that has resulted in a "2 Glasses" Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator- only 10 establishments in Thailand have achieved that and there are 2 in Phuket the other being Boat House with Wine Guru George Ciret. Wine Consultant Randy Chin says they have about 370 different wines and about 1,000 bottles in total. Their Wine Sommelier Khun Ta was recently placed second in a wine competition so don't let this young lady fool you- she is very good on wines Fresh Red roses are delivered daily, there are 103 different dishes, 25 car parking spots and over 60 fans, so with the sea-breeze there is no need for aircon. Many staff have been around for years and perhaps I can let readers into a secret. The new place was created as the lease had expired on the old place but the landlord had second thoughts so instead of a new location, the new location is just a "cut and paste and photo shop" duplicate of the old place (this is the way long term Marketing Director Sue Ultmann describes them). It is amazing how similar they are and you really have to try both to determine which you prefer. There are only 30 staff but they make the place hum- my tip is ask for table B5- provided I'm not sitting there. Even if you are on a diet it is worth visiting just to see the detail on this typical old style wooden Thai building. But then again you'd be crazy as the food is very different to most Thai restaurants

дним из первых заметных персонажей на ресторанной сцене Пхукета был Том МакНамара, очень активный американец, хозяин красивого дома из тика на скалистом мысе в северной части Патонга. Во время частых вечеринок и званных ужинов, друзья Тома убедили его открыть собственный ресторан. С тех пор прошло 25 лет и ресторан, некогда рассчитанный на 32 персоны, теперь готов распахнуть свои двери для 200 гостей одновременно. Этот ресторан называется Baan Rim Pa, и специализируется он на тайской королевской кухне. Заручившись поддержкой друзей из отеля Oriental Hotel в Бангкоке, Том получил в свою команду Кун Даса, который и по сей день возглавляет ресторан. Кун Дас не только управляет рестораном, но и является владельцем внушительного пакета его акций наравне с вдовой Тома, Кун Пенсри, а также двумя детьми Тома от предыдущих браков. Разработанное под руководством Тома меню, а также стандарты сервиса актуальны и по сей день, несмотря на то, что 8 лет назад Том покинул этот мир. Мудрая поговорка «от добра добра не ищут» отлично отражает суть стратегии развития ресторана. Управляющий директор Кун Дас остается верным традициям и очень осторожно относится ко всем нововведениям, даже когда речь идет о такой мелочи, как цвет перил. Так что же является жемчужиной этой истории, сам Том МакНамара, или ресторан Baan Rim Pa, созданным им в 1990 году? Вы в праве сами решать. Второй ресторан Baan Rim Pa Kalim совсем недавно открылся всего в 1,9 км севернее своего знаменитого предшественника, но теперь с еще более захватывающими панорамными видами и величественными высокими потолками. Cut the tomatoes and the onion and marinade all with salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil, red vinegar and lemon juice, than stir frequently making sure all the ingredient fuse together. Than take the lobster meat and mix with the tomato and onion mixture and continue stirring making sure the sauce is been absorbed from the lobster meat. Than place the lobster on the plate and start to compose the dish as in the picture. This dish can be eat warm or cold, this is a traditional recipe from the North Sardinia, it's called Lobster "Catalana style" as in the old times Sardinia it's been dominated from Catalans where they left some use and traditions. s a longtime resident in Phuket Eric Smulders, owner of the Soul of Asia Gallery in The Plaza Surin, knows the art and jewelry market better than anybody on the island. Before coming to Phuket, Eric spent some 30 years in Hong Kong, partly as Managing director of Cartier, the world-renowned jewelry house. Here he dealt with precious stones on a daily basis and he translated his experience onto buying for his own collection, jewelry in America. In the US nearly daily jewelry shops go bankrupt and their stocks are then sold in bankruptcy courts to a select group of qualified buyers, amongst which Eric is a proud participant. These sales often take place between midnight and 6 am Phuket time so he has to catch up on his sleep if he is bidding. The jewelry is often bought at a fraction of its value, which he then sells through his Gallery at a fraction of the retail value, sometimes at a 90 % discount! Of course he knows what he buys and all the jewelry in his stock at the Soul of Asia gallery have certificates from G.I.A . (Gemological Institute of America) or similar agencies. In the Soul of Asia Gallery, you will also find a selection of paintings, which are from his private collection put together over many years. MY PARENTS MET AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEARNING IN THE CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT. My father now
operates the largest construction companies around, they build industrial facilities. I guess I have it in my genes.
LIVING AND WORKING IN CHINA, I OFTEN WANTED TO ESCAPE FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE, AS THE SAYING GOES; I NEEDED A PICTURE CHANGE. After all, when one province is home to over 100 million people, it can be hard
to find solitude and peace. The picture changed completely , now we are in Phuket!
I DO NOT REMEMBER WHO SAID: ‘A HEALTHY LIFE DEPENDS ON THE THREE "WHAT"; What you breathe, what you drink and what you eat! The last two can be bought, buying air is not possible. As my husband says, the air in Phuket is very tasty! OUR GOAL is to build projects in which we could live ourselves. I THINK THE PROBLEM WITH MANY EXPENSIVE PROJECTS IN PHUKET IS that they look like dresses in a fashion show
- beautiful, unusual, sometimes too open, not suitable for everyday wear, but the house is always on display, it can’t be put away like a dress.
WE HAVE SEVERAL BUSINESS PROJECTS in Russia, Hong Kong, China, and now in Thailand. Which project is the most successful? I have two of them, and each year they become more and more successful: our daughters Maria and Ksenia! MY HOBBY - SCUBA DIVING. The underwater world has always fascinated me, each time it shows me how all the
unusual, beautiful, difficult things have already been created. We just need to learn to see them and try to create something of our own!
I CANNOT FALL ASLEEP without reading a few pages from a book. I LOVE TO TAKE PICTURES OF NATURE AND OUR CHILDREN, it seems to me I’m not that bad at it either. NOT ENOUGH SNOW ON NEW YEAR'S EVE. My parents know this, and on the last New Year they brought snow in a
thermos to Phuket!!! Inexpressible delight.
THE NAME ‘SUGAR’ - we chose it because it certainly is different from the names of other projects. I hope that all our

DO NOT THINK YOU’RE BETTER THAN ANYONE, and do better than you yourself did yesterday! TO PARAPHRASE A HACKNEYED SAYING ‘There is no ‘can not’, there is only ‘do not want to!’ OUR OFFICE IS LOCATED IN THE PROJECT AREA, and the entire construction process is before us. Therefore, each
step is controlled by us personally. And, of course, the most important guarantee of quality - this is our team of professionals - architects, engineers, builders, designers. By the way, after the completion of the office we will be located in the management company, which will deal with various issues from cleaning the house and grounds to aid in the management of lease! As they say - we will do it all, you just smile.
IN THAILAND, I WAS MOST SURPRISED THAT THE NAME OF THE COUNTRY - Thailand (The Land of Freedom) actually coincides with the feeling of freedom! After all, freedom - that's probably the most valuable thing given to us after birth. I THINK, THROUGH WANTING TO CHANGE THE WORLD, WE FORGET TO CHANGE OURSELVES, and the personal
small world around us! And I believe if everyone would at least change his personal life, then your families, friends and then the world would also change too. It's just the power of anyone! So let's start to change ourselves, and then we will change the world.
IF I HAD A BILLION DOLLARS, I would dance Jaga-Jaga's on a super yacht with Elton John.
Seriously though, big money is a big responsibility. After all, money is a tool with which you can make not only good things, but bad things. I am glad that a lot of problems and difficulties can be resolved not only with money, but also perseverance, ability, desire to develop, and other things. But I certainly do not deny that earning money brings satisfaction: it is always nice when your work is evaluated.

кой проект самый успешный? У меня их два, и с каждым годом они становятся все успешнее! Эти проекты - наши дочери Мария и Ксения!
МОЕ ХОББИ – ДАЙВИНГ. Подводный мир всегда меня завораживает, каждый раз доказывая мне, что все необычное, прекрасное, невообразимое уже сотворено. Нужно лишь научиться это видеть и попробовать сотворить что-то свое! Каламбур получился. НЕ МОГУ ЗАСНУТЬ, не прочитав несколько страниц из новой книги. ОБОЖАЮ ФОТОГРАФИРОВАТЬ ПРИРОДУ И СВОИХ ДЕТЕЙ. Мне кажется, у меня это очень даже
не плохо получается.

Phuket is Turtles Home Written by Isabella Naef
D
id you know that Phuket is home to five different species of sea turtles? They have been nesting for thousands of years on our island and the only beach where they do so now is Mai Khao Beach near the airport. The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation was launched in 2002 during the grand opening of JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa to raise funds and awareness of the endangered leatherback turtles. Over the recent years, the Foundation has broadened its environmental projects to not only conservation of the leatherback turtles, but also the environment, with the involvement of local communities, schools, universities and governmental organisations. These activities include beach and reef cleaning, educational workshops, recycling projects, tree planting, turtle rescue/release and support of other marine conservation organizations. The future of sea turtles mainly depends on the actions of the human race. If we continue to avoid these issues we run the risk of reducing the sea turtle population to dangerously low levels. We at Isabella Yachts Phuket, have been proudly supporting the foundation since we first opened in 2013. We love to take part during their activities, but as well, we provide free copies of "Phuket Sea Turtles Biology and Conservation" books to our clients. By booking a private boat trip with us, not only they are already helping our seas turtles, but they can get a better understanding of what the foundation is all about. These books are written by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation then translated from Thai to English by the students of Kajonkietsuksa School and are available to buy at 300THB each, which will of course go all to the turtles. A very interesting book to read for all ages with plenty of pictures and all information about how the foundation, together with the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, are helping preserving our local species and at the same time, educating the local communities with these issues.

Why did you choose to marry in Phuket?
All of my family are here,- Salisa tells us,- We own a hotel in Patong called Andaman Embrace Resort and Spa.
How did you find your wedding dress?
My friend recommended the Daughter Of Eve boutique. I heard they had high fashion brands. At first, I thought that I wouldn't be able to afford it but after I researched and considered other options, I realized it was not very expensive. I didn't mind to pay a little bit more to have something special and high quality. I wanted to look different to other Thai couples.
What was your favourite part of planning the wedding?
The dress shopping and the jewelry shopping'. For sure, the shopping part! (Salisa laughs). I chose the suits for my groom; he totally trusted my taste and was very happy with everything I picked.
How did you feel on the morning of your wedding day?
Everything was a rush. To be honest, I set the alarm incorrectly! The alarm didn't go off and I felt quite stressed: I am the bride and the Managing Director for the Andaman Embrace so I had two roles to think about.
What is your advice to new grooms marrying in Phuket and what is the difference compared to a wedding in Bangkok? Phuket is great because you can have a vacation as well as having the wedding. It was easy for friends from Bangkok to visit and enjoy a weekend break. All the wedding support that couples have in Bangkok is still available in Phuket.
Now that you have experienced your own wedding in Phuket, what advice can you give new brides who are considering to marry at the Andaman Embrace resort?
They can have confidence that I will be there to oversee many aspects of the booking. Our venue is right in the heart of Patong with ample car parking space. The couple can have a grand stage in the middle of the beautiful pool as I did and they will not be placed in a regular looking conference room, as some hotels would provide.

Была такая спешка! Если честно, я неправильно установила будильник, и мы постоянно очень спешили. Конечно, это был стресс. Кроме роли невесты на меня была возложена роль управляющего директора отеля, так что скучать не пришлось.
Какой совет вы дали бы парам, которые решили пожениться на Пхукете? И чем отличается свадьба здесь от свадьбы в Бангкоке?
Пхукет - отличное место для свадьбы, потому что одновременно ты можешь отдыхать. Для друзей из Бангкока это было как глоток свежего воздуха, выбраться сюда из душного города на выходные. Безусловно, важно, что весь сервис, который есть в Бангкоке, вы можете получить и на Пхукете.

Dominique Gerardin
and His Beauty of the World Recently we were lucky enough to visit Dominique Gerardin on his amazing yacht, the Lamima, which is the largest wooden sailing yacht in the world. He told us all about the wonders of sailing and how there are many unbelievable places to explore around the globe, many of them untouched by human civilization.
Can you tell us something about yourself?
My name is Dominique Gerardin. I always travel, all my life, my dad was in the army so I always travelled around a lot. I stayed in South Africa for maybe 10 years. After, I came back to France and started Yachting.
What were your expectations when you came to Phuket with this spectacular vessel?
The main reasons are things like world-class diving, beautiful scenery, amazing remote areas, culture of the local people, so we picked it for that. Phuket airport is very good also, there are many good facilities here in Phuket. Another reason is most of these boats are built by Thai people, so we can be proud in them. We have a good relationship with the Thais.
What will be your next location after Phuket?
West Papua in Indonesia. It’s fantastic but it’s a little bit difficult to access. It is very remote, so setting things up with Passports, electrical equipment and other things can be difficult.

Have you been to Phuket before in your life?
Yes, but I didn’t stay long, I made a delivery and then the other captain took over.
What is the main idea behind building LAMIMA?
I told a wealthy friend I wanted to build an amazing boat in Indonesia, something really authentic, so he told me to send him a file. Therefore, I went to Indonesia and spent three months making a good file. I sent him the file and within 30 minutes he said go for it. With this boat, I was able to do exactly what I wanted to. I went to West Papua and I could not believe how pretty it is. Also, to make it all authentic, I had to go with a local crew because how could I go with someone from somewhere else? Germany, Australia? You need someone who can speak the local dialect, someone who knows the area. I have one British guy for communication but the rest are Indonesian. I love my crew like family; our aim is to be number 1 in Indonesia. When we have guests on the boat, we get more compliments for the crew than the boat.
What was your dream when you were a child? I wanted to be a rescuer in the Mountains.
What is your greatest achievement? Lamima.
What is something you feel ashamed of? Maybe sometimes I’m not brave enough.
What’s your favourite movie? I love Titanic. It’s a beautiful love story.
Tell us about the strongest storm you’ve ever experienced. It was between Malaga and Gibraltar. It was on an Italian boat.
What’s your favourite music? I love Dire Straits.
What’s your next goal in life?
I would love to do something in the rivers of Burma, like a traditional river boat. I will have to immerse myself in Burmese culture beforehand though.
What would you say to the readers of our magazine?
Discover the beauty of the world. There is so much to discover, but do it off the usual path, don’t just go to a travel agent, do research. There are so many unique places to discover. It’s important for rich people to discover these things so they realize how important it is to help keep these places nice and pristine.

и его уникальная яхта Lamima Недавно нам удалось встретиться с Домиником Жерардином на его роскошном судне «Lamima», которое является самой большой деревянной яхтой в мире. В разговоре Доминик рассказал нам о тонкостях мореходства, а также о потрясающих уголках Земли, которые повидал, многие из которых совсем не тронуты цивилизацией.
Вы могли бы в двух словах рассказать о себе?
Меня зовут Доминик Жерардин. Я постоянно путешествую, мой отец был военным, поэтому мы часто переезжали с места на место. Я жил в Южной Африке около 10 лет, потом я вернулся во Францию и занялся яхтингом.
Каковы были Ваши ожидания от путешествия на Пхукет?
Я знал, что на Пхукете можно заняться высококлассным дайвингом. Также меня привлекали красивые пейзажи острова, культура местных жителей и неизведанные места. Немаловажно и то, что аэропорт Пхукета расположен очень удачно, имея хорошее сообщение со всеми близлежащими провинциями, ведь здесь действительно есть, что посмотреть. Другая причина: Пхукет – настоящая мекка яхтинга, здесь многое испокон веков связано с мореходством, мне это очень интересно. Думаю, что это то, чем могут гордиться тайцы.

Куда Вы отправитесь после Пхукета?
Западное Папуа в Индонезии. Это абсолютно потрясающие места, но до них довольно сложно добраться. Могут возникнуть проблемы с оборудованием для яхты, дозаправки топливом и многое другое, но я готов на это.
Вы ранее уже бывали на Пхукете?
Да, но я никогда не оставался надолго, я сопровождал яхту до Пхукета, а после ее забирал другой капитан.
Какая главная идея в строительстве Ламимы?
Я рассказал своему очень состоятельному другу, что хочу построить уникальную яхту в Индонезии, а он просто попросил прислать бизнес-план. После я отправился в Индонезию и потратил 3 месяца на подготовку чертежей и рассчетов. Отправив их ему, я сразу получил ответ, что можно начинать работу. С этой лодкой у меня была возможность осуществить все ранее мною задуманное. Я поехал в Западное Папуа и не поверил своим глазам: так красиво там было. Для того, чтобы воплотить этот уникальный проект, мне нужна была свобода передвижения, мне нужен был кто-то, кто знает язык и ориентируется на местности. Так что в команде у меня все индонезийцы, и один англичанин, который является инструктором по дайвингу. Моя команда для меня как семья, наша цель - быть в Индонезии номером один. Когда у нас на яхте гости, команда получает больше комплиментов, чем само судно.
Какая была ваша мечта в детстве? Я хотел быть спасателем в горах.
Какое достижение считаете главным в жизни? Lamima.
За что Вам стыдно?
Может быть, иногда за то, что я не такой смелый, каким хотелось бы быть.
Какой Ваш любимый фильм?
Я люблю «Титаник». Это очень красивая история любви.
В какой самый сильный шторм Вы попадали?
Это было между Малагой и Гибралтаром, сильнейший шторм застал нас на яхте, и было реально страшно.
Какую музыку Вы любите? Мне нравится Dire Straits.
Какая Ваша следующая цель в жизни?
Я бы хотел сделать проект на реках Мьянмы, что-то вроде традиционной бирманской лодки. Но мне нужно сначала основательно погрузиться в их культуру, чтобы понять все до конца.

Fiat’s Abarth 500 X
Fiat's new Abarth 500X is set to rival the Nissan Juke Nismo RS and the MINI Countryman JCW. The new flash bodykit isn't the only thing to wow viewers, it's more than likely that the Alfa Romeo's 4C 1.75 Litre turbo engine will be used, meaning that acceleration will be like jumping to light-speed.
Bentley Bentayga
Bentley have finally entered the luxury SUV market with a worthwhile vehicle. Their aim is to make the Bentayga model the fastest and most luxurious SUV in the world. With a 6.0-litre W12 engine the new model will deliver 600bhp and 900Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate as quickly as a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. The only downside to this is that it will make it more costly to run. Economical diesel and hybrid models should become available in the near future.
Aston Martin DB11
It looks like the Aston Martin DB9 is going to be usurped by the DB11. With a possibly turbo charged Ford-built 6.0-litre V12 under the bonnet, speed and efficiency shouldn't be an issue. The vehicle might also come with a V8 engine and Auto Express spy shots showing a range of buttons and an infotainment system from the S-Class.
Audi A5
The Audi A4 has just come out and already, an A5 model is set to follow it up. It will be available as a two-door coupé, and also a five-door Sportback. The main difference between the A4 and A5 model is that the A5 will be lighter and more efficient. The lower-powered 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI version will emit less than 100g/km of CO2, making it more environmentally friendly.

Living in Thailand over Christmas can be a very interesting time. You can see all the usual Christmasy things like Christmas trees and snow covered ornaments but there's still something a little different about the atmosphere. On Christmas day, it's usually only foreigners and expats who celebrate, most Thai people don't even have the day off work. This can make cultivating the right Christmas dinner atmosphere here a little tricky but don't worry, here are some Christmas table decorations that will make you feel right at home when serving up a Christmas lunch or dinner.
Bon-bons
No Christmas meal would be complete without bon-bons. They are always fun to pull with the person sitting next to you. The prizes and jokes inside are usually terrible but that is part of the charm.
Sparkling pine cones
You probably made these in primary school. They make a great addition to the table and are easy to create. A non toxic silver spray can and a pine cone. The only problem in Thailand is finding the pine cone.
Mini Christmas trees
Easy to make with any materials. You can use green cloth on wooden structures, small bells and tinsel, cut out card paper; your imagination is the limit. If you are feeling creative, you can even fashion a bonsai tree to suit the occasion.
Candles and Holly
Red candles set in holly leaves is the quintessential image that people imagine when they think of traditional Christmas meals. If you can find them in Thailand be sure to buy them. They will add a comforting sense to your Christmas dinner environment.

Деревянные палочки, цветная бумага, пластик, ткань, бисер, блестки и вата вместо снега – творческий простор ограничен лишь вашим воображением. Поклонники японского искусства бонсай могут и вовсе нарядить подходящее по размеру деревце.
Свечи и омела
Красные свечи и омела – это символы западного рождества, которые дошли и до России, став в новой для себя стране элементом новогоднего декора. Найти традиционные подсвечники, венки и сами свечи можно во всех крупных магазинах. И, конечно же, их можно сделать самим. Такому подарку перед Рождеством и Новым годом обрадуется каждый.
