Anti-social behaviour ‘leaving vulnerable people scared’ A CARE home boss has called for action to protect her vulnerable residents from anti-social behaviour.

Last week, the Leader reported how an accountancy firm was sending out surveys asking businesses and residents to share how anti-social behaviour was affecting them.

Mathew plays ace role in Wimbledon success story

A VOLUNTEER who ended up a de-facto member of a tennis pro’s team has spoken of his pride after she became Wimbledon champion.

Mathew James, a tennis coach from Mold, has described his “surreal” experience of helping practice with Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the weeks leading up to her accomplished defeat of the legendary Venus Williams in Saturday’s final.

Mathew, 27, who attended the tournament to volunteer as a “hitter”, ended up sitting in the player’s box for the final on Centre Court, before accompanying Muguruza and her team during the celebrations after she won 7-5, 6-0.

He helped her train before all but one of her matches in the lead-up to the 23-year-old becoming Wimbledon champion for the first time.

The former Ysgol Maes Garmon pupil, who used to train at the Wrexham Tennis Centre & High Performance Academy, said: “Pride is the word I am feeling.

“It went from going to Wimbledon to improve, get experience and learn and not expecting anything out of it to then being a training coach.

“I ended up doing a performance analysis on Venus Williams, which is quite a funny moment to find yourself in. The experience of being in the box and having people sending photographs of the team, and her looking at them after she won, it is quite a cool story.

“There were two or three players who I was hitting with early on and you are just hoping that one of them does well – it’s turned out Gabrine has done really well and she was getting superstitious and asking for the same court to practice on every day.

“She even wanted everyone to sit in the same order in the box.”

Mathew works as a tennis coach at the Millfield School in Somerset, where he is hoping to bring through the next generation of tennis stars.

He said the experience would help him in his coaching role.

“With the kids at school they are still at an age where we ask them what their ambition is and it is to win Wimbledon and I can now tell them a part of what it takes to get there,” he said.

“I obviously don’t know about the preparation before the tournament, but I can tell them a bit about what it takes during the tournament.”

Mathew, who even ended up staying in the team’s apartment after the win, said he was hopeful he could help Muguruza train again.

He said: “I would love to do it again, but maybe next year at Wimbledon I will be headhunted.

“I want to get out to the US Open and do it out there but I will have to speak to them and ask the question.”

Mathew, who admitted to viewing Williams as the slight favourite before the final, looked set for a bright future in professional tennis himself as a youngster – but injury forced him to turn his back on the dream.

As a youngster he broke into the world’s top 100 and appeared at Wimbledon’s junior tournament when he was 16, but soon injuries took their toll.

This year he made his second appearance at the tournament as a hitter, where he helped the big names to warm up before they go on court.

Police launch knife amnesty week

Underneath the Arches goes off with a bang...

THOUSANDS of revellers turned out to make the return of Underneath the Arches a roaring success.

About 3,000 visitors gathered for the music and light spectacular with a familyfriendly atmosphere at Thomas Telford’s Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nestled under the towering 126ft pillars of the aqueduct is the Bont playing field, which was transformed into a picnic field for the evening entertainment.

With live music from bands The Rhythm Train, 32 Red, The Moments and Bobcat Billy’s Moonshine Mission, the evening wrapped up with a spectacular laser and firework show high above the Dee Valley.

Joe Bickerton, destination manager at Wrexham Council, said the event was a huge success.

He said: “The biggest thing for us is the celebration of the World Heritage Site.

“We had about 3,000 people there and it was a good mix of the local community and visitors making their way into the area.

“It is part of our annual celebration of having a World Heritage status and it is really

NORTH Wales Police are calling on people across the region to give up their potentially lethal weapons this week in a drive to educate people about the dangers of knives.

A week-long knife amnesty campaign begins today, running until Sunday.

During this period people are asked to bring their knives and other items to local police stations.

In 2006, North Wales Police took part in the first national knife amnesty which was launched by the Home Office, where over 1,700 knives were handed in at police stations across the force area.

Also, North Wales Police’ School Community Police Officers will be raising awareness of the consequences of carrying a knife in lessons across schools in North Wales.

Special amnesty disposal bins will be placed in stations in Wrexham, Mold, Rhyl, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Bangor, Caernarfon and Holyhead. Members of the public can hand in knives to these disposal bins without fear of prosecution.

It is advised to wrap the sharp objects in cardboard before handing them in to the stations.

Insp Julie Sheard from the North Wales Police Community Safety Department said: “Our focus will be on targeting those who habitually carry and use knives, tackling the supply and access to weapons, engagement with the public to increase awareness of the consequences of carrying knives and providing opportunities to surrender weapons.”

The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is four years in prison and a fine of £5,000.

Cash boost for charity helping hungry kids A CHARITY that provides thousands of healthy meals to children is set for a cash boost.

Caia Park Community Council has agreed a £1,000 grant for the Holiday Hunger Project, which prepares around 100 meals a day for children of low income families during the school holidays.

The project, based at St Mark’s Church in Caia Park, uses more than 60 volunteers from churches and the community to reach children via outlets such as the Venture and Gwenfro Valley playschemes.

It seeks to help children who are likely to receive free school meals during term time and families where, due to low income or unemployment, it is difficult to provide meals during the holidays.

Council clerk Mike Morris told members that the council had previously provided £500 to the project.

Cllr Steve Jones proposed that the council provide the grant.

He said “If we have given them £500 before I think it’s fair.”

Cllr Malcolm King added that the project “feeds a lot of children who are pretty starving”.

Man’s threat to kill A WREXHAM man charged with making a threat to kill and other offences will go on trial in November.

Connor Griffiths, 21, was remanded in custody in the meantime.

Griffiths, of Y Wern in Wrexham, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Friday via a live television link from Altcourse Prison in Liverpool.

He denied that on June 10 he made a threat to kill a woman and assaulting her, occasioning her actual bodily harm.

Griffiths denied assaulting three other people as well.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke remanded him in custody and fixed his trial for November 22.

City comes to standstill as officer killed in terror attack laid to rest

MEMBERS of the public, relatives and police representatives were united in grief when the funeral took place in Chester of an officer killed in the Manchester terror attack.

DC Elaine McIver was one of 22 people who died when suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a bomb in the Manchester Arena’s foyer on May 22 after a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande.

A horse-drawn carriage carrying her coffin arrived at Chester Cathedral on Friday, flanked by two police horses. It was met by uniformed pall-bearers and a guard of honour.

DC McIver, 43, worked at TITAN (the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit). She grew up in Ellesmere Port and served Cheshire Constabulary for 20 years, working in her home town and also Warrington and Winsford.

She was off-duty when she attended the Manchester Arena concert with partner Paul, who was injured in the blast.

Paying tribute to her after the funeral, the Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary, Simon Byrne, said it was a dignified service and a fitting tribute to a loved and widely-respected woman.

“It was a mix of emotions,” he said.

“You couldn’t fail to be moved hearing about a person that meant so much to the family and to the force.”

The Chief Constable said he was very moved by the spontaneous applause from the crowds of people who came to pay their respects outside the cathedral. ”She was someone full of life, fun and optimistic – someone that was always seeing the bright side of life who worked really hard,” he added. “There have been condolences from across the country and around the world.”

DC Elaine McIver’s family released a statement on the day of the funeral.

It read: “Today is the day we say goodbye to our beloved Elaine. The last six weeks have been our worst nightmare.

They urge people to campaign and lobby for changes in legislation over how terrorist suspects are dealt with, adding: “Twenty-two people died in this atrocity on May 22. Twenty-two people were

arrested and subsequently released.

“The perpetrator was 22-years-old and previously known about by our authorities. I would like to see changes brought about so we have more resources and more powers to ensure any suspects are dealt with effectively and not allowed back onto our streets to wreak the havoc and devastation they are causing.

“But today we concentrate on celebrating Elaine’s life and the kind and wonderful person she was.

“We will sing her to sleep one last time and say night night, sleep tight, beautiful little sister.”

Prince answers call to open new HQ...

THE Prince of Wales visited Wrexham to open the head office of a telephone answering service.

Prince Charles arrived in the town to officially open the office of Moneypenny, off the Western Gateway, on Friday morning.

After being greeted first by dignitaries – including Wrexham mayor Cllr John Pritchard, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Lloyd Fitzhugh, High Sherrif of Clwyd Charlotte Howard and Lesley Griffiths AM – and then by members of the public waving flags, he was welcomed into the office by Moneypenny founders Ed Reeves and Rachel Clacher.

The heir to the throne was taken on a tour of the headquarters to discover more about the company – which provides telephone answering, switchboard, live chat and social media services to companies of all sizes – and to see facilities including a treehouse meeting room, built-in pub, table tennis tables and more.

After having the chance to speak with Prince Charles, Les and Pauline Warner from Ruabon – who came to see the visit with grandchildren, Catrin, six, and three-year-old Iestyn – said: “It was the first time we’ve met him. He was very nice.

“He was very easy to speak to and we think it was a good opportunity for the children to see him. They have been very excited.”

Team manager Ashleigh Tatton demonstrated how a call was received, with Prince Charles listening via a separate headset.

Ms Tatton said: “He was very nice, very friendly and he put me

at ease. I was a little nervous, but quite excited. It was more the apprehension.”

Sophie McGarrity told Prince Charles about Moneypenny’s ‘We Mind The Gap’ scheme – a six-month trainee programme designed to give young women more opportunities in life and in work.

She said: “It was amazing, I was nervous but also really excited.

“He seemed like he was very interested.”

Kelsey Ashworth, team leader for the Canal and River Trust team, explained how the department handled calls for the charity of which Prince Charles is a patron.

She said: “It is the fifth year anniversary of the name for the Canal and River Trust – prior to this they were British Waterways, a statutory corporation.

“It was an amazing feeling.

With him being a patron it was such an amazing opportunity to show him what we do.

“We showed him how it works, how we handle social media, what projects the trust has on at the moment that Moneypenny are part of.”

Speaking to staff members before unveiling a commemorative stone to mark the office opening, Prince Charles said: “It has been an enormous pleasure to join you for this short moment to see the work of Moneypenny and I’m fascinated to discover what you all do.”

Moneypenny co-founder Ed Reeves said afterwards: "In no way did today disappoint in terms of reaction from the people.

“Today has been a seal of approval.

“The offices were designed to reflect the needs and wants of our staff.

“We wanted to create the happiest workplace in the land, here in Wrexham.

“He was excited to see so many people so engaged in going about their daily work.”

Co-founder Ms Clacher said: “We couldn’t be more pleased.

He certainly was saying as he left how happy and engaged people are.

“It has been a privilege to welcome him here.”

Escape to the country for a weekend of having fun and making memories. Cerys Matthews explains to Jamie Bowman what the Good Life Experience offers that other festivals don’t

M

usic, literature, craft and design, pit cooking and the natural world – Hawardenbased The Good Life Experience is one of a kind when it comes to festivals.

The three-day event returns to Flintshire later this summer, taking place at its beautiful home on the estate of former Prime Minister William Gladstone.

Now in its fourth year, this weekend of discovery was devised by musician and radio personality Cerys Matthews and her co-creators – arts consultant and Cerys’ husband Steven Abbott and Charlie and Caroline Gladstone, founders of online store, Pedlars, award winning Hawarden pub The Glynne Arms and Hawarden Estate Farm Shop.

Meeting in a pub five years ago, the group of friends dreamt up a weekend where you could forget the pressures and responsibilities of the daily grind in favour of an escape to the country.

Cerys said: “We had decades of event experience between us, and were huge fans, but were keen to get away from corporate-driven festivals.

“The aim is guests leave the festival inspired and energised, rather than exhausted and empty pocketed.

“It was very important to make sure it was value for money so you weren’t absolutely skint at the end of the weekend. I know, having been to loads of festivals, that you can spend hundreds of pounds.

“Value to me is not measured in terms of material wealth but in experiences. We started the Good Life Experience so memories can be made, whether that’s climbing a 100-year-old oak tree or discovering a new act.”

As an example of the festival’s eclecticism, the line-up includes Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen – described by Cerys as “one of the brightest and funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting”.

Also featuring are BBC wildlife presenter Kate Humble; songwriter Michael Head; Masterchef winner and Wahaca founder Thomasina Miers; Roger Phillips, the world’s leading mushroom expert; and author Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

More than 40 ‘makers’ have also been invited to show off their wares and give demonstrations, with classes including Manhattan axe makers Best Made Co; Australia’s motorbike specialists Deus exMachina; London publishers The Do Book Company; Northumbria’s Hepple Gin; Brecon’s Hang Fire Smokehouse; Sheffield’s acclaimed EW

“We’re not the kind of people to get complacent,” says Cerys.

“We spend so long on it and the planning starts once the event finishes.

“There’s a lot of festivals out there, but I think it’s now starting to get its own little niche and I don’t have to try too hard to explain why it’s so different and special – word’s getting out there now which is great.

“We’re growing a little bit each year but we don’t want to get too big and become a corporate festival.”

In addition to its cracking line up of music, poetry and food trucks there will also be: screen printing; guitar making; calligraphy; ceramics; sushi workshops; children’s cooking; bush craft; bug exploring; pottery; natural dyeing; bike building; knife making and

boat building.

Also on offer will be stone masonry; leather working; knitting; spoon carving; metal pressing; carpentry; wild running and calligraphy; choral singing with Sills and Stitch; vegetarian cooking on a campfire with Anna Jones; bread making with Tom Herbert; pit cooking with Damien Clisby, of Petersham Nursery; and grilling with the Brazilian Chefs and ecochef Tom Hunt.

Other elements include strict meter bardic poetry (cynghannedd); workshops run by Gwyneth Glyn and Twm Morys; cider making; authentic Appalachian country dance lessons; abseiling; axe

throwing; foraging; forging; bow and arrow making; fermenting; wild swimming in the estate’s remote, protected lake; and endless other workshops, talks, classes and demonstrations.

Fittingly for its mid-September setting, the site is dotted with log burning fires whose blue smoke lingers in the mild pre autumn evenings and bring a magical atmosphere.

The farm fields are full of pumpkins, blackberries, apples and pears (many of which are offered for free) and there’s a cornfield that becomes a place of exploration for the youngest guests, as my children found out last year.

“We live in Britain so we do plan for rain,” laughs Cerys, reflecting on last year’s glorious weather.

“In Norway they have a saying which I love – “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing” – but at the end of the day it’s about being outside and digging in and getting your hands dirty.”

Cerys, 48, now lives in London but she was born in Cardiff and lived in Swansea and later Pembrokeshire. A fluent Welsh speaker, she is the 2017 official ambassador for Wales and its Visit Wales tourism campaign.

The mother-of-three hit the charts during the Brit Pop era with her band Catatonia, as hits such as Road Rage and Mulder and Scully made her a household name.

In 2010 she began presenting her Sunday morning show on BBC 6 Music and it has now gone on to become the most listened to music show on digital radio.

“I wanted the festival to be like my show – really eclectic,” she says.

“I always get to meet really cool interesting people. If I’m interested in what they’ve got to say and I’m inspired by them I’d like other people to meet them too.”

In recent weeks, Cerys has been in the headlines after she witnessed the Grenfall Tower tragedy from her flat close by in Kensington.

She is passionate about keeping the issue in the public eye and urging people to write to their MPs

about the disaster.

“We live next door and anyone who witnessed what the residents had to go through has been mentally affected and traumatised,” she says.

“It shouldn’t have happened and it’s not as simple as being just about the cladding. There was neglect and decisions being made by the council that put profit before people.

“If you want the whole picture you have to go back to when the residents formed an action group petitioning for safety. They knew it was an accident waiting to happen.

“I’ve never really strayed into the political arena before but in this case the system has failed catastrophically on every level. I can’t not talk about it because this is my community, these are good people and they were the kids in my children’s school.

“It is the most culturally diverse, beautiful community I’ve ever lived with and I’ve lived all over the world.

“I’m heartbroken as I wanted to think the Britain was less corrupt than other countries but it is not.” ● The Good Life Experience takes place September 15-17.

Care home boss in protection call

CALLS have been made for action to protect vulnerable care home residents from anti-social behaviour.

Last week, the Leader reported how Morag Browning, director of accountancy firm MD Coxey and Co on Grosvenor Road, started sending out surveys to nearby businesses and residents asking them to share how they had been affected by homeless people, drug taking and anti-social behaviour.

Debbie Davies, who has been manager at the White House residential home in Grove Road for two-and-a-half years, has now spoken of the problems she has experienced – in particular with people sleeping rough, using drugs and scaring her residents, who on average are aged 80 and have dementia.

She said: “The problems started in about March 2015. We bought a property next door and we were getting a lot of people sleeping rough there.

“There was faeces in bins, a lot of needles and syringes and they had been burning their drugs.

“We made everywhere secure, we tightened our security with cameras and big gates, “Since March 2015 we have called the police 17 times.

“Last Christmas they pinched all the Christmas lights, which were of no use to them as they cut them off before the generator so they could not have used them.”

She continued: “One night we had a homeless guy hanging over the fence shouting there was a baby in a pram at about 3am.

“I arrived and there was an empty pram. He was obviously high on drugs.

“It is not fair on the night staff.

If they come out for a break in the night it is scary for them.

“There have been homeless [people] rattling the doors at the back at about 4am, and hanging around the windows.

“On June 19 we called about an intruder attempting to get into the building and four police officers came out.”

Regarding those living at the care home, she said: “We have 33 residents. They are vulnerable adults and we need to ensure they are protected.

“It is hard enough with their condition, never mind having to put up with this. It is scary, they

Calls for review into use of weedkiller THE USE of a weedkiller by council staff should be reviewed while controversy rages over whether it can cause cancer.

That is the view of Ronnie Prince, Wrexham councillor for Cartrefle ward, who raised concerns over Roundup being used to control weeds in the county borough.

Cllr Prince said the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced in 2015 glyphosate – the active ingredient in Roundup – was “probably carcinogenic to humans”, as well as a study in the Lancet medical journal that year which found a key ingredient to be carcinogenic for nonHodgkin Lymphoma.

But the WHO published a report in 2016 stating it was unlikely to cause cancer in humans through eating food.

The councillor said wildlife television presenter Chris Packham had raised concerns over glyphosate.

But he also said the National Farmers Union (NFU) had said Roundup was safe.

He added: “So what is the truth about Roundup?

“While the controversy rages on, wouldn’t it be prudent of this council to discontinue the use of Roundup until it is proved one way or another to be safe or otherwise – because in the future if it were proved to be carcinogenic or detrimental in other ways to human health, and we had our doubts now at this time, would the council be held accountable?

“I will be asking the council to review its policy of controlling weeds in the borough and its use of

Roundup at this time.

“I will also be asking for a health and safety investigation to take place on the methods used in the spraying of Roundup in my and other wards in the Wrexham area at this present time.

Cllr David A Bithell, Wrexham Council’s lead member for environment and transport, said glyphosate was an “effective herbicide used to treat weed growth” used by Streetscene staff in Wrexham to help control weeds.

He added: “In terms of the safety of glyphosate, we are guided by HSE advice on the use of herbicides.

“I refer to the Health and Safety Executive website information on glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup.

“Glyphosate is currently approved for use as a herbicide (weed killer) in the EU. Approval was granted in 2002, based on a review of mammalian toxicology, ecotoxicology and other data.

“The current approval expires on December 31 at the latest. Neither the EU's assessment of glyphosate as an active substance, nor the UK's assessments of applications for authorisation of products which contain it, have found the substance unacceptable for use.”

“Wrexham Council ensures operatives in Streetscene use the correct personal protection equipment and are properly trained and certificated in how to use the spray correctly.

“Any Streetscene staff using the herbicide will hold a PA1, PA2 or PA 6 certification, depending on the usage.”

She said she feels more could be done to help those sleeping rough, adding: “I do feel like we need more police presence and not just an early morning call to move them on. It is like out of sight, out of mind.

“I think they do need to be signposted somewhere where they can hang out, have foods and shower.”

Last month, Wrexham town centre inspector Paul Wycherley said he was willing to assist anyone who wanted help with their addictions. But he issued a warning to those who do not heed his message and said action would be taken against those who were unwilling to accept his offer.

He said: “We have got officers in the town centre throughout the day. This particular challenge has caused angst for local people and we have had meetings where we have offered assistance to people using these products.

“Some have taken up the referrals we have made to agencies that can help them with their addictions and social challenges.

“I told people in those meetings that if they failed to engage there would be consequences.”

■ Manager of The White house care home in Wrexham says they are being blighted by anti social behaviour.

Cannabis conviction A MAN was found to be in possession of cannabis after being arrested for other matters.

Michael Lee Bethell, of Coed Aben, Caia Park, was searched at Wrexham police station where officers found a small quantity of cannabis.

When questioned by officers, Bethell, 25, told them it was for personal use.

Appearing before Wrexham Magistrates’ Court, Bethell pleaded guilty to being in possession of a class B drug.

Ian Barnes, defending, said Bethell was originally from Liverpool but now lived with his partner in Wrexham, where he was hoping to make a fresh start.

He has used cannabis for many years but only uses it occasionally and is not addicted, Mr Barnes said.

Magistrates fined Bethell £80 and ordered him to pay £85 costs as well as a £30 victim surcharge.

A forfeiture and destruction order was made for the cannabis.

Police raid properties A WREXHAM man has been arrested after officers carried out two drugs raids.

Police have arrested a 38-year-old Ruabon man on suspicion of possession of class A and B drugs with intent to supply after warrants were executed in Queen Street in the village and Bala High Street on Friday morning.

A North Wales Police spokesman said that officers seized quantities of cocaine, cannabis, amphetamines and drugs paraphernalia during the operation.

Insp Steve Owens said: “The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs and is currently in custody at Wrexham Police Station.”

MPs critical of PM’s call for crossparty unity

A “HARD Brexit” is not in the interests of North Wales as Theresa May canvasses Parliament for support.

David Hanson, Labour MP for Delyn, said the Prime Minister’s attempts to engage other parties in discussions on Brexit displayed a “fracturing” of her Government.

Mrs May called on opposition parties to work with the Government on issues such as counter-terrorism, workers' rights and Brexit.

The speech coincided with Mrs May’s first year in office as Prime Minister.

Mr Hanson, who was returned as an MP with an increased majority in last month’s election said it was clear Mrs May’s record was “one of failure”.

He said: “The Prime Minister has now been in place for a year.

“Within that time her government has overseen

inflation rising, wages stagnating, and cuts to our public services.

“It clear this Prime Minister's record is one of failure.

"Theresa May’s Conservative vision for the country was rejected at the last General Election.

“She is now a weakened PM and it is clear her cabinet is disjointed.

“Each announcing their own populist policies in the hope of gaining the crown.”

Mr Hanson said his party was in a position to move forward for his constituents should the possibility arise, given his part leader, Jeremy Corbyn, called for a new election in September.

"This government is fracturing day by day,” Mr Hanson said.

“Labour is ready and waiting to pick up the pieces and put forward a progressive government; a government that works in the interests of all in Delyn.

“A hard Brexit is not in the interest of North Wales as can be seen by Airbus’ comments last week.”

Mr Hanson’s Westminster colleague, Ian Lucas, MP for Wrexham, was also critical of Mrs May's approach and said he had been pressing the Government since Article 50 was triggered.

He added: “Theresa May should, now, act in good faith to do what is in the national interest.”

Hopes new institute could help generate £4bn windfall ECONOMY Secretary Ken Skates AM has announced funding for the first phase of a new Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute in Deeside, which could generate an increase of £4 billion to the Welsh economy over 20 years.

Bridge struck on ‘notorious road’ A BRIDGE has sustained damage after a vehicle is believed to have struck it.

The new institute will have a strong focus on advanced manufacturing sectors including aerospace, automotive, nuclear and food.

It will deliver gamechanging support to key manufacturing companies as well as multi-sector supply chain companies and the broader SMEs economy.

The institute is geared to increase productivity, commercialisation, innovation and skills development.

It is expected to drive a thriving competitive industry base, which in turn will act as a catalyst for growth and jobs across the supply chain in Deeside, North Wales, the Northern Powerhouse and further afield.

The first phase on the institute is expected to be up and running by 2020 and will build on existing infrastructure already in action, such as Coleg Cambria

University Centre.

The funding agreed will seek work beginning on the full design and specification of two separate facilities on at Broughton and once close to the Deeside Industrial Park.

Airbus is confirmed as the first member at the Broughton site.

Mr Skates, who is also AM for the Clwyd South constituency, said: “I am absolutely committed to delivering on my pledge to establish a £20 million Wales Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute in Deeside which will focus on increasing commercialisation, training and productivity.

“If we are to continue to compete globally Welsh industry must remain competitive and this means adapting to modern techniques and understanding the potential opportunities offered by collaboration and changes in economy for example the fourth industrial revolution.

“The new institute will very much support these ambitions and I am genuinely excited by the impact it could have.

“The centre will be ideally designed and located to deliver benefits for Wales and to

maximise opportunities associated with the Northern Powerhouse.

Indeed external experts have predicted that, dependant on external economic conditions, GVA could increase by as much as £4bn, an impact that could be absolutely transformational to the economy of North Wales and our country more widely.”

The Institute has been developed by the Deeside Enterprise Zone Advisory Board, with detailed input from, Swansea University AMRC Sheffield, Airbus and Coleg Cambria in conjunction with SMEs and large companies.

MP urged to support ‘fix room’ for drug users WREXHAM MP Ian Lucas has been urged to support the idea of setting up a “fix room” in the town where drug addicts can inject safely and hygienically.

The invitation came from North Wales police and crime commissioner who is calling for a “more enlightened, tolerant and effective” way of tackling the drugs issue.

Mr Jones, an ex-police inspector and a former Wrexham councillor, says a new approach is essential because “the war on drugs has failed”.

He was responding to criticism from Mr Lucas who claimed that Mr Jones wasn’t doing enough to address anti-social behaviour in the town.

According to the commissioner, nothing could be further from the truth.

Mr Jones said: “North Wales Police have put a lot of effort into dealing with this situation but we cannot arrest our way out the problem.

“It’s being caused largely by problematic drug use which needs to be treated as a health issue not as a criminal matter and we need other agencies to play their part.

“The Chief Constable and I responded to local concerns following an event in Wrexham last November to consult about the Police and Crime Plan.

“Neither Mr Lucas nor the local AM, Lesley Griffiths, attended the event.

“As a result of that meeting we included a section on Safer Neighbourhoods in the plan as a priority. That was as a direct consequence of representations made to us at this meeting.

“Mr Lucas also did not attend a briefing event for elected politicians to update them on current issues which was hosted by myself and the Chief Constable.

“I have met with numerous local politicians and community leaders as well as frontline drug workers from CAIS and ARCH and there is a

We can’t arrest our way out of this problem consensus that partners should jointly fund a pilot Safe Injecting Facility in Wrexham.

“I do have sympathy for the residents and businesses in Grosvenor Road and there is a way forward.

“If we have a safe injecting facility it would also help address the other problems.

“All it needs is some innovative forward-planning and thinking by all the partners, not just one.

“I have had two meetings with the cabinet secretary for health Vaughan Gething along with my

colleague Dafydd Llywelyn, the police and crime commissioner in Dyfed Powys, where we raised concerns around increasing drug related deaths and anti social behaviour as a symptom of the underlying cause of problematic drug use.

“Problematic drug use often cooccurs with mental health issues and homelessness and the antisocial behaviour is symptomatic of underlying causes.

“My office and North Wales Police are already dealing with the symptoms of this problem and it is time others played their part in addressing the underlying causes.

“I would therefore ask Mr Lucas to do something positive to assist me in supporting my call for a safe injecting facility pilot in Wrexham to reduce the anti social behaviour.

“It would also be helpful if Mr Lucas would also ask his colleague

Lesley Griffiths, the local AM, to give her support to the idea because this is essentially a health matter and health is a devolved issue.”

Mr Lucas said he would be happy to meet with Mr Jones: “Indeed, I would welcome him attending a meeting with me and with the businesses affected.

“He cancelled an arranged meeting with me on the day of the proposed meeting last year.

“I know that he will not meet constituents about individual concerns, but I do and individuals and businesses have come to me for help on this issue.

“I also agree that we need to find somewhere for people to go in the daytime and have made this view clear already to the council, the police and other agencies.”

Man ‘in turmoil’ threatened ex-partner’s husband AN ELECTRICIAN’S mate had lost control in “a moment of emotional turmoil” when he turned up drunk and threatened his former partner’s husband, a court heard.

David Christopher Williams, 24, of Minera Road in Minera, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court and admitted using threatening or abusive behaviour against Michael Eccleston on June 29 at Woburn Close in Wrexham.

He also admitted causing criminal damage to a motor vehicle, a UPVC front door and two internal walls belonging to Katrina Eccleston at Woburn Close as well as drinkdriving on the A525 – which also both took place on June 29.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told the court Williams had been in a relationship of three to four months with Katrina Eccleston in 2016 while she was separated from her husband, Michael Eccleston, following which the relationship had come to an end.

Mr Espie said while trying to rekindle her marriage, Mrs Eccleston had been in bed with her husband on the night of June 29 when her husband received a call from the defendant.

Williams had told Mr Eccleston to

“get outside” and when asked why he had replied “you know why”, Mr Espie said.

The couple then heard a bang which sounded like someone had kicked their front door and looked outside to see Williams intoxicated and agitated, the court heard.

Mr Espie added when warned the police would be called, Williams had said he didn’t care and continued to act aggressively.

The defendant had also said he knew where Mr Eccleston’s mum and dad lived and then picked up a stone, which was thrown through the bedroom window and damaged two internal walls, the court heard.

The couple then heard a loud bang which prosecutor Justin Espie said was believed to be the window of Mrs Eccleston’s car being smashed.

Police were then called and Williams, who had left the scene, was stopped by officers on the A525 and found to have 41 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 35.

Stephen Edwards, defending, told the court the incident had come about after Williams’ difficulty in accepting the relationship was over

as well as the loss of a close family member.

He said: “He has no track record in this type of incident.

“He was in a relationship with Mrs Eccleston while she was separated from her husband.

During that time he fell in love with her and tells me “I still love her”.

“It was a happy relationship. They were expecting his and her first child but decided to terminate the pregnancy. He still loses sleep about that decision.

“Because of his family dynamics he was brought up a lot by his grandfather, and it was his funeral yesterday.

“He has indicated he has been to his doctor and was prescribed medication for depression.

“David told me the day of the incident they were in each other’s company for a number of hours.

“Then after she left he carried on having a few drinks. He jumped in his car and drove past the Woburn address and saw they they were together.

“He totally lost control of himself in a moment of emotional turmoil.

He wishes the court to know that at no stage did he intend to carry the threats out. He accepts he has to

say the relationship is over.”

Michael Jones, chair of the magistrates, told Williams: “Normally we would involve probation but this being your first offence we think another course might be better.”

In respect of the threatening behaviour, Mr Jones ordered Williams to pay a fine of £200 and a separate fine of £200 for the criminal damage.

He also handed him a further £200 fine for the drink driving offence and ordered him to pay compensation of £428 to Mr Eccleston, a victim surcharge of £30 and court costs of £85 – bringing the total he has to pay to £1,143.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months but the disqualification could be reduced by three months upon successful completion of a driving improvement course.

He was also given a restraining order for an indefinite period of time which prohibits him from going within 50 metres of the home address of Mr and Mrs Eccleston, as well as the parents of Mr Eccleston.

The order also prevents him from contacting Mr and Mrs Eccleston in any way.

We will tackle quad bike yobs, vows PCSO RESIDENTS are fed up with yobs riding motorcycles and quad bikes illegally on a Wrexham estate.

PCSO Jonathan Davies told the latest Caia Park Community Council meeting that North Wales Police were receiving good intelligence from residents who were “angry” and fed up” with illegal motorcycle use.

He added that there were two arrests on the previous weekend and that two bikes had been seized.

The officer told the previous meeting in June of an increasing number of motorbikes being ridden in the community as well as in open spaces and footpaths.

Councillors at the July meeting heard that plain clothes officers on bikes would be deployed in the area PCSO Davies said that residents were getting “so fed up and angry” with illegal motorcycles that they were giving good intelligence on who is riding the bikes and where they are storing them.

“Because people seem to be so frustrated about the issue, they’re really starting to come forward because it’s just not fair,” he said.

Cllr Malcolm King said that they have also asked housing associations to remind tenants that anti-social behaviour negates their tenancy agreement and they could find themselves evicted.

Cllr Harper added that they were “waiting on some final feedback” on leaflets that will carry this message.

PCSO Davies noted work being done by Cllr King and Cllr Carrie Harper to put bollards in a field where the vehicle are frequently used.

In response to a question from Cllr Harper, PCSO Davies said that modified push bikes were not road legal and could be seized.

Cllr Harper said urged people to use the North Wales Police Live Chat online service if they have problems getting through on the 101 number.

She added that that there were problems with an online facility to upload pictures of anti-social behaviour to the police, and said that “it would be useful if we could be told when it’s working before we direct people to it”.

In response to a question from Cllr MJ Downward, PCSO Davies added that all details given by uploaders were treated as confidential.

Cllr Brian Halley urged Caia Park residents to use their mobile phones to take pictures or video footage.

He said: “There are probably 5,000 to 10,000 mobile phones with a camera in Caia Park and they should all be pointed at these motorcycles.”

PCSO Davies also addressed the issues of drugs and other anti-social behaviour on the estate, adding that a warrant was successfully executed a fortnight ago and that police believed it had “sent a positive message in the community”.

He added that police patrols had been increased on the estate.

Louise Edwards is currently in fifth place in the Retraining of Racehorses Bronze League with 68 points.

The horse rider, from Llanferres, near Mold, is riding her nine-year-old mare, My Mate Al – or ‘Tally’ as she’s also known.

This pair have shown consistency and look forward to a long-future together.

Louise originally had Tally on loan two years ago and when the loan period came to an end was sad to see her go.

Earlier this year Louise jumped at the chance to buy Tally when she was offered for sale.

Councillors to support market upgrade plans COUNCILLORS are expected to support plans for more than £400,000 of improvements to a pair of town centre markets.

A report to the council’s employment, business and investment scrutiny committee – which will meet tomorrow – outlines a revised strategic action management plan (SAMP) which proposes a raft of enhancements at the town’s grade II listed General Market and Butchers Market, as well as associated shops, over the next five years.

Among the outlined works at the Butchers Market are improved access, extensive works to improve the high street frontage and repairing the market’s historic clock in 2017/18, cleaning or replacing stall canopies and upgrading the roof within two to three years and renewing the floor within three to four years, among others.

Works outlined for the General Market include repairing the glass roof and improving the entrance from Chester Street and Henblas Street within two to three years and renewing the floor within three to four years.

The plan also proposes to install wi-fi and upgrade traders toilets at both markets in 2017/18.

The report states: “The condition reports concluded, to comprehensively refurbish the property to an overall standard that would be considered excellent over the next five years is currently estimated, in the region of £128,000 for the General Market and £290,000 for the Butchers Market.

“To enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness of the markets it will be important to continue to improve not only the mechanical and electrical works as identified by the condition surveys, but also the cosmetic appearance of the properties to make them more attractive for shoppers and other market users.”

Longer term plans to be undertaken within three to four years – which are not specified to either market in the report – include upgrading CCTV, replacing or refurbishing all stalls and a comprehensive electrical upgrade.

According to the plan three actions have already been achieved: refurbishment of two key stalls at the Butchers Market, the installation of a new fire alarm system at both

Make them more attractive to shoppers and other market users markets and repairs to walls and flooring in the Butchers Market café.

The document states, however, that the upcoming proposed enhancements are “subject to securing the appropriate funding and managing the current proposed income figures”.

The action plan outlines some of the works would be funded by rental income, while some would be covered by “potential external regeneration funding”.

In its conclusion, the report states: “The

intention is to fully utilise and re-invest any surplus into delivering a programme of improvements. There will, however, need to be a continued emphasis on securing external funding to fund any costly improvements beyond the general repair and maintenance.

“This year’s activities are already being developed and preparatory works such as the surveys and drawings that are currently being produced to obtain listed building consent for enhancements and improvements to the High Street elevation of the Butchers Market will enable us to secure funding if it becomes available.

“The Henblas area lies at the heart of the town centre physically and is central to the delivery of the Town Centre Vision and Masterplan, specifically underpinning it as a destination.

The report recommends committee members comment on the progress as well as supporting the revised action plan.

Never turn your back on cooking, fire chiefs warn FIRE chiefs have issued a safety warning after a cooking fire in Wrexham.

Crews from Wrexham were called to a kitchen fire at a flat on Ffordd Gwilym at 4.21am on Thursday.

The fire was caused by cooking left unattended and one casualty was given a precautionary check up at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Jâmi Jennings, community safety manager, said: “Time and time again we attend house fires which have started in the kitchen – it is so easy to forget you’re cooking, especially if you are tired, distracted or have been drinking.

However, the consequences can be devastating.

“Our message is clear – never turn your back on your cooking, even for a minute.

“Leaving any cooking, but especially a chip pan, unattended for any length of time can have disastrous results.

“The oil in the chip pan can easily overheat and ignite – even the smallest distraction could lead to a fire in a matter of moments.

Oven chips are safer as well as being healthier, but if you do choose to deep fat fry please don’t leave the pan unattended.

“If your chip pan does ignite,

don’t throw water over it. Get out, stay out and call 999. Never tackle a fire yourself. Better still – throw away your old-style chip pan altogether and use a thermostatically-controlled deep fat fryer.

“Smoke alarms save lives. The early warning provided by a smoke alarm can provide vital minutes to help them escape unharmed.

Ensure that you maintain your smoke alarm by testing it once a week.”

Kitchen safety tips from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service include: If leaving the room, take the cooking off the heat; don’t use matches or lighters to light gas

cookers – spark devices are safer; always make sure any handles are turned away from the edge of the cooker; keep the oven, hob and grill clean as a build-up of fat and grease can easily catch fire; and never hang anything to dry above the cooker.

Other tips include taking care if wearing loose clothing as it can easily catch fire; when cooking is finished make sure everything is turned off; turn off electrical appliances when they are not being used; never cook after drinking – get a takeaway instead; and get fitted with smoke alarms – they are free of charge and could save lives.

Elderly man died from fractured neck in stairs fall

AN ELDERLY man was heavily under the influence of alcohol when he fell and fractured his neck, a coroner ruled.

Myles Augustine Ryan, 77, died after he fell down the stairs at his home in Church Street, Ruabon on February 3.

An inquest at the Guildhall in Wrexham heard that Mr Ryan, born in Tipperary in Ireland, had shortterm memory loss, dizziness and headaches due to an injury at work as a crane operator.

Mr Ryan had several falls between 2008-17, some of which resulted in overnight hospital stays.

But his daughter June Banham, in a statement read by coroner John Gittins, said that Mr Ryan remained largely independent with help from carers.

One of Mr Ryan’s carers, Leona Edge, said that he had seemed “his usual happy, jolly self” on the day before his death.

Another carer, Kim Harper, said that she arrived at Mr Ryan’s home at 8pm on February 3 and entered using a key on a box outside the door, but he was not there.

She called her office and was told to continue her visits and return at 9pm, as he may be in the pub.

Miss Harper had trouble opening the front door on her return as something seemed to be blocking it, before pushing the door and seeing Mr Ryan.

He did not respond when Miss Harper called to him and she called for an ambulance before going to a neighbour for assistance.

Paramedics had arrived when she returned and told her that Mr Ryan had died.

Dr Andrew Dalton’s post mortem examination of Mr Ryan found 203 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, and 223 milligrammes in his urine.

The level was equivalent to having approximately six pints of beer, Dr Dalton said, and added that he was “heavily under the influence of alcohol”.

He had fractured his C3 and C4 vertebra and had a minor head injury.

Hr recorded the cause of death as fractured neck vertebra with thorassic trauma due to a fall, with alcohol a contributing factor.

Mr Gittins agreed and recorded conclusion of accidental death.

Mr Ryan, he said, had descended or ascended the stairs having clearly consumed alcohol, fell and sustained the injuries.

Man, 43, died after suffering chest pains A MAN died aged 43 of natural causes, an inquest heard.

Jeremy Peter Williams was found at his home in Park Road, Rhosymedre at 9.45am on December 18.

Camille Harwood, Mr Williams’ former partner, said that he had been under financial stress.

She added that he had chest pains for some months but had not sought help.

But she was not sure if the financial problems contributed to a deterioration in his health.

Ms Harwood added that Mr Williams – with whom she had kept in touch after their split – had drunk to excess and taken cocaine during the weekend before his death.

Mr Williams had driven home from a friend’s house at around 8am on December and called her, saying that he had a tight chest.

He told Miss Harwood that he loved her, was sorry and that he needed her help, the inquest heard.

Mr Williams condition got worse during the call and she told him to call an ambulance.

He did and rang Miss Harwood back to tell her that he had done so before the line went quiet and there was no response.

A police report said that an ambulance crew found Mr Williams in an extension next to the front door of his home.

Dr Mark Atkinson’s pathology report found a very small amount of alcohol in Mr Williams’ blood.

There was also evidence of cocaine, but it was below the fatal and toxic levels.

Alcohol and a cocaine metabolite were found in his urine – also at a low level.

Mr Williams’ heart was slightly enlarged but there was no evidence of hardening of the arteries or an acute cardiac event.

Coroner John Gittins added that a condition called arrhythmia can occur, which results in an irregular heartbeat and could cause a death.

Dr Atkinson gave the cause of death as hypertrophic heart disease and added: “I presume the death is natural”.

Mr Gittins, coroner for North Wales (East and Central) said that the case involved an “irregularity or event that resulted in the heart stopping”.

He said that he suspected cocaine was a “possible factor” in the enlargement of the heart because there was a “known connection between the two”.

But he added that in terms of probability “there was not enough evidence to take me into the realm of making a conclusion of drug-related death”, and concluded that it was a natural death.

Stolen camera back in place A CCTV camera stolen from Caia Park is back online.

Mike Morris, clerk of Caia Park Community Council, told the latest meeting that the camera that covers Bryn Hafod and Prince Charles Road was back in place.

The Leader told how at around 10.30pm on New Year’s Day, a thief scaled a 30ft pole to steal the camera.

The theft was discovered when North Wales Police contacted Mr Morris to say the camera was missing and ask whether it had been taken away for repair.

The camera was paid for by the community council and adopted by the police.

It was recovered 12 days later in the Gwenfro area by PCSO John Davies and was then sent for repair to see if it could be salvaged.

Mr Morris told the July meeting that the camera was now protected by sets of spikes and anti-vandal paint.

THE Welsh Labour Government has confirmed that students from Wales will receive the equivalent of the National Living Wage while they study.

From 2018-19 Wales will be the first country in Europe to introduce equivalent maintenance support across full-time and part-time undergraduates, as well as postgraduates.

Government estimates show that a third of full-time students will receive the maximum grant, which is £8,100 for a student living away from home.

The average household income for a student in the current system is around £25,000.

Under the new system such a student will receive around £7,000 a year in nonrepayable grant. ● LATEST figures showing an improvement in the number of organs being transplanted and donated in Wales have been welcomed

by Welsh Labour’s health secretary Vaughan Gething.

In 2015 Wales became the first country in the UK to introduce a soft opt-out system of organ and tissue donation. ● LABOUR market statistics show only 1.5 per cent of people of working age in Alyn and Deeside are claiming out of work benefits.

This compares favourably with nearby Delyn and Wrexham constituencies where the figure is 1.8 per cent. In Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney and Rhondda the rate is 3.2 per cent and the lowest is 1.1 per cent in Neath and Ceredigion.

There are now more than 1.4 million people in employment in Wales, an increase of 19.1 per cent since devolution but we also know that the rate of unemployment still remains high in some communities across Wales.

That’s why I’m pleased to see Julie James, the skills and science minister, outline her agenda for employability in Wales.

DUP deal makes political sense MARK Brittain’s article (July 12) on the Government’s agreement with the DUP was undoubtedly interesting and I have no doubt that most of your readers will have agreed, like me, with at least some, if not all, of it.

However while it might be, as he claims, “wrong that separate UK nations are treated differently” he is wrong to assume that the agreement has to do with UK nations.

It has not. It has to do with political parties.

I think most people will agree that Theresa May is, unfortunately, turning out to be a very poor Prime Minister.

That she decided in the first place to have a General Election was, for whatever reason, a bad decision, if only because, historically, the evidence is that elections held unnecessarily invariably go wrong.

That it did go wrong cannot be denied but Mrs May and the Conservative Party still got more support than any other party, even if there was not an overall majority.

So, in order to have a majority, Mrs May did a deal with Arlene Foster

and the DUP – but the DUP had its own manifesto for the General Election.

Not unnaturally, if the DUP MPs were effectively to be part of the Government (even though they may have no seats in the Cabinet), they would want at least some aspects of their manifesto to be reflected in any agreement.

And that, surely, is what has happened, even though, as a result, it has turned out to be a quite expensive agreement.

Tories don’t care about affordable homes MORE proof of how the Tories disrespect the houses on which millions of families rely to put a roof over their heads.

Property developers are supposed to allocate part of each development in big cities to affordable housing in return for being given planning permission for the rest of the development.

But when the Conservatives got into government they changed the rules to allow developers to weasel out of that if they say they can’t afford it.

Which, in turn, means developers are now under pressure to overpay for land or derelict property – with the money going to Tory landowners – because the extra cost can be recouped from developments focused almost entirely on profitable top-of-the-range dwellings.

Last week it was announced that a Tory council had allowed a Malaysian property consortium to slash the number of affordable flats in a development by several hundred, to only nine per cent of the total, even though the developers are on track to make a profit of £1,800 million.

That means hundreds of families will remain trapped in squalid rented bedsits rather than having a decent home.

It’s the same Conservative mentality we saw when EW

Kensington and Chelsea councillors saved money by replacing the planned cladding of Grenfell Tower with cheaper materials, while pouring money into opera at the wealthy end of the borough.

And the same attitude we saw when Tories complained about a council in the West Country trying to control the conversion of family homes into second homes, which are left empty for most of the year and hollow out local communities because there are beautiful villages where virtually no-one lives, just bankers coming down from London for one weekend a month.

For the Conservatives, defending the right of the wealthy to a second home is more important than helping build affordable homes so that people in their 20s and 30s move out from their parental home.

During the election Labour presented plans to build a million homes in five years.

The Conservatives’ counterproposal was vague, uncosted and clearly not serious.

They are doing nicely already in their expensive properties – whether in Downing Street or elsewhere – and they regard the housing shortage as someone else’s problem.

I am very much in favour of the arrangement. As somebody who has a number of relations living in Northern Ireland, I have always felt that part of the United Kingdom has been treated no more than as a troublesome poor relation living offshore.

Someone, in other words, who should be kept sedated and hopefully quietly forgotten about.

But what seems to have been ignored or forgotten is that, if and when Brexit materialises, the border between Northern Ireland and Eire is likely to prove the most difficult part of the negotiations.

It seems to me that it will prove to be of vital importance that we have, within government, a group of people who will be directly affected by any agreement covering the border.

My fingers are crossed in the hope that we can press on with the Brexit negotiations without any further interruptions from frustrated losers.

Sadly, I suspect that it is a forlorn hope.

PM warned of spending L ALSOP knows full well that David Cameron did not “denounce public sector workers as selfish” (Letters, July 13).

He said it was “too soon to let spending and borrowing rip, because of the danger of future economic shocks”.

He added: “The opponents of socalled austerity couch their arguments in a way that make them sound generous and compassionate.

“They seek to paint the supporters of sound finances as selfish, or uncaring. The exact reverse is true.

“Giving up on sound finances isn’t being generous, it’s being selfish: spending money today that you may need tomorrow.”

It is easy for irresponsible politicians, courting cheap popularity to promise all sorts of spending without worrying about where the money is coming from or whether a future government will have to deal with the consequences or future generations pay the bills.

Responsible politicians, by contrast, are obliged to set out what are uncomfortable and unpopular truths.

Police are not ‘passing the buck’ over the complex issue of rough sleeping I RESPOND to Steven Vale’s letter ‘Shops pay the price as police pass the buck’ (July 13).

The challenge with persons sleeping rough in the town centre and anti-social behaviour is well documented.

What is perhaps not so well reported is the inordinate amount of work that various agencies are putting in to try to cure this issue.

It is accepted that no single agency can resolve the issues without close liaison and working together.

To this end, a plan is in place, drawn up by the Community Safety Partnership, which brings the local authority, police, ambulance, drug and alcohol support experts, health board and third sector providers together to work as one unit to root cause issues for the benefit of all.

It is vitally important that we work collaboratively to deal with these issues as it is a fallacy that police have a power to simply ‘move someone on’.

Indeed, I would suggest that that approach would be ineffective as we

■ Inspector Paul Wycherley. would simply be moving the problem to a different location, whereas we sincerely hope that this group will be able to work together to improve the situation permanently.

In reply to specific points in Mr Vale’s letter, clearly if persons in question were being abusive then the police have powers to act. If persons are simply present in doorways and

‘spilling coffee on the floor’, that is not a police matter.

Any perception that we ‘pass the buck’ is not fair but we must be clear in stating that that police resources are finite and so our resources have to be prioritised.

On occasions we have to say that a particular matter being reported is not one for the police to deal with and refer the caller to an agency with responsibility for that particular matter.

That is not “passing the buck”, it is us simply being cognisant of the fact that resources are less than we would like and the police cannot do everything.

Finally, insofar as the police moving to Llay, I again reiterate that we are currently building a town centre police station at Llwyn Isaf to ensure Wrexham town centre has officers working right at the heart of the community.

We need national policy on student housing

I WRITE in response to contributors regarding the delivery of student accommodation in Chester.

The underlying problem in Chester and some 240 other such Town and Gown (T&G) places primarily lies with the absence of a national policy on the supply of student housing.

It should dictate when, where and how enlarged student populations should be integrated into established residential communities or otherwise dispersed in emerging T&G conurbations.

The lack of any such government policy – despite many appeals for such policy having been made by concerned politicians and community campaigns including the National Organisation of Residents Associations and the National House in Multiple Occupation Lobby – and the relative incapacity of institutional actors to effectively intervene or regulate the residential geographies of students, is proven to have

yielded ‘unbalanced’ populations in a range of urban contexts.

Serious academic research and coalface experience of those living in these conurbations has proved it. This is a key factor in the rise of studentification and the fragmentation of well-established residential communities.

This determined refusal/failure by [central] government to deliver required statutory guidance to its local authorities (LAs) undermines the delivery of competence in management of this phenomena by LA planning officers and compromises and disempowers elected LA members in making sound decisions... judged against requirements set out in their own agreed local lans and the National Planning Policy Framework.

This failure also compromises the potential positive social, economic and cultural benefits which students can bring to towns and cities.

It also fosters resentment and conflict between students and residents and local authorities

IN THE Assembly chamber I spoke on the Welsh Government’s Employability Strategy and underlined the importance of equipping our young people with the tools they need to succeed in the world of work.

This policy is key if we are to achieve prosperity and security for our young people, our communities and, ultimately, our economy.

I also raised a number of the points made by local stakeholders during my Future Flintshire event back in March.

The comments centred around the challenges facing our transport network in North East Wales, specifically the issue of young people’s ability to get to their place of work and the need for an integrated transport system.

I encouraged the minister, Julie James, to consider these issues as part of the ongoing plans to develop a North East Wales Metro programme. ● I WELCOMED Ken Skates, the cabinet secretary for economy and infrastructure, to Flint Castle to discuss the ongoing work and potential future investment in our local heritage site.

Flint Castle is an amazing asset at the heart of community and it is great that the Welsh Government is committed to investing in and growing the site as a major attraction in our area.

I want us to develop the offer we have for local people as well as, importantly, promote the tourism offer for those visiting North Wales.

In doing so there are a number of exciting plans to further invest in Flint Castle in the pipeline so constituents can look forward to more good news in the near future.

Arguments between key players to date seen here in Chester over whether or not what is going on against this background is beneficial have so far failed to grasp this fundamental reason for what is wrong that has little or nothing to do with anti-student or anti-university sentiment.

The root of the issue has far more to do with the development and rental sector’s relatively unregulated ability to gain the sort of permissions for development that are so often undermining...of sound sustainable balanced development.

Sadly, despite a promise to produce one in Chester, so far no higher Education Impact Assessment has been done and now the LA senior management refuses to meet members of the community who want to discuss activating this strategy.

Region deserves to benefit from vital new rail link

WORK began on Friday to reinstate a rail link expected to open up business and leisure opportunities in Liverpool, North Wales and Cheshire.

Known as Halton Curve, the 1.5 mile section of track is seen as a key part of the strategy drawn up by the MerseyDee Alliance to boost the economy of the region.

When completed in the middle of next year, the £19 million upgrade by Network Rail will see an initial hourly service run in both directions between Liverpool and Chester – serving Liverpool Lime Street, Liverpool South Parkway for John Lennon Airport, Runcorn, Frodsham and Helsby.

And there are plans to extend services into North Wales, something currently being considered as part of the Wales and Borders franchise.

The rail link is being funded by the Government’s Growth Deal and Liverpool City Region with the input of Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Welsh Government and a consortium of six county authorities in North Wales.

It is confidently predicted the new link will remove the need for 170,000 road journeys, easing pressure on the M56 and A55, while giving the local economy an uplift of £100m.

Ced Green, from the North Cheshire Rail Users Group, says the project will help in harnessing the economic synergy which exists between North

and North East Wales and Merseyside.

He says he and other campaigners are delighted work has begun to bring this short, but vitally important, section of the rail network back into full operation.

Welsh Government economy and infrastructure minister Ken Skates, who is also AM for Clwyd South, says this “huge development for public transport” is much welcomed and improving rail connectivity between North Wales and Liverpool offers economic and social opportunities for both regions.

Cllr Samantha Dixon, leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council and chairman of the cross-border Growth Track 360 rail taskforce, says this critical investment will have a transformational effect on rail services in her borough and across North Wales and the Mersey-Dee region.

Welcoming the Halton Curve investment, Delyn MP David Hanson asked the transport minister Paul Maynard in the House of Commons whether any money had been given by the Department of Transport to improve links between Crewe and Chester and then on to North Wales.

He said later the minister had made all the right noises, but it is important pressure is put on the Government for further investment in our region.

He insists now that £1.5bn has been given to Northern Ireland, it is only right we get our fair share.

Parkfields area of Mold, opened the brilliant Rhydymwyn Fete, took part in the Star Warsthemed parade at Mold Carnival, and attended the Grand Garden Opening of the Cottage Nursing Home.

It was a pleasure to meet with the Cottage Nursing Home residents in Mold and enjoy their beautiful new gardens.

A special mention must go to landscapers Mike and Andy who have put in a great deal of hard work and the result is a magnificent garden ready for residents and their families to enjoy.

Working in cinema is a daily joy for film lover...

A CINEMA employee is aiming to watch his 6,000th film as he celebrates 20 years in the movie business.

Highlights for Chris Haskins, a host at the Odeon at Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre in Wrexham, have included dancing in the aisles to Abba hits and dressing up as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean and Yoda from Star Wars.

Blockbuster hits when Chris joined the Odeon in 1997 included Men in Black and The Full Monty, while Titanic followed early in 1998.

He arrived after working for the former Marcher Sound radio station on its community action desk.

“Cinema has really changed over the past 20 years,” said Chris, 61.

“We have gone from 35mm film to digital projection and Dolby surround sound systems.

“And of course we have seen the rebirth of 3D cinema.

“Originally with 3D films the

customer had to wear a pair of cardboard glasses that were hardly comfortable and, to be honest, the quality was shocking. Now it’s so different.

“The viewer still wears glasses but they are now like sun glasses and the product is so much better.”

He continued: “It really is very different. And I think audiences have changed too. We now show films to suit just about every taste and with multi-screens there is usually something for everyone.

“We are also now showing live theatre productions and even music concerts which are shown live.

“This has really taken off and, for instance, when we recently showed Othello, a national theatre production, the theatre was packed.

“It makes sense really. You get a front row seat for very little money and don’t have to travel to London or fork out for hotels.

“And you get to see the actors, or

In 20 years of working for the Odeon Chris, has seen more than 5,000 films and he’s hoping to clock up his 6,000th movie soon.

He added: “I first went to the cinema with my father when I was about seven or maybe eight. We went to see Lawrence of Arabia and I was just amazed by the whole experience.

“After I left Marcher Sound I started with the Odeon at Plas Coch in Wrexham before transferring to Eagles Meadow when it opened about eight years ago.

“I really enjoy coming to work and no two days are the same.

“I was dragged up by customers to dance along to Abba songs when we showed Mama Mia and I’ve often dressed as major film characters to help give customers a really good cinema experience.”

“My favourite films have got to be both of the Magnificent Seven films, the original and the recent remake. I love anything with Steve McQueen in; he was such an amazing actor.

“I also like Meryl Streep films; she never makes a bad film, while the best acting I think I’ve personally seen was Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight a few years ago. They were simply magnificent.”

THESE amazing photographs have captured the moment a rare baby bear tries its paw at tree climbing for the first time.

Chester Zoo’s thrill-seeking Andean bear cub, which has yet to be sexed, is the first to be born in mainland Britain and has been relying on mum Lima’s help.

Tim Rowlands, curator of mammals at the zoo, said: “It’s gaining more confidence with every passing day and is wasting little time getting to know its surroundings – including some of the very tallest trees.

“Although the little one has perfected the art of climbing up trees, it hasn’t quite perfected how to get back down again and occasionally relies on mum to demonstrate how it’s done.”

The Andean bear is the only bear to inhabit South America. They are found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia but their numbers are in decline as a result of habitat loss and confl flict l with humans.

The bear was immortalised in literature through the classic children’s character Paddington Bear, created by Michael Bond, who died last month.

Double delight as college team enjoys league and cup glory

A COLLEGE football team are celebrating their most successful ever year.

West Cheshire College are the 2016-17 ECFA/AOC Football Category 3 North West Regional League Champions.

To complete the season, the college also lifted the Cheshire Cup to make it a memorable double triumph.

2016-17 will go down in history as the college’s most successful season so far.

As league and county cup winners, this is the first time the college have claimed the double in the same season.

Jason Doggett, teacher and football academy co-ordinator, said: “The boys put in an unbelievable performance against tough competitors, Manchester City FC Development, to become league champions last month.

“The team has shown great professionalism, class and unrivalled determination to demonstrate why they should be county cup winners and league champions this year.

“It truly showcases the hard work of the players and the quality of our football academy programme.

“Since we began the football academy, it has been a huge success, growing with our reputation year-on-year. We offer outstanding education alongside excellent football development opportunities and we look forward to continuing this in the future.”

Category 3 is the regional league for colleges with a good standard of playing football and suitable facilities to accompany this.

It contains the widest range of football teams who participate proactively and enthusiastically, making for a competitive and enjoyable league.

West Cheshire College’s Football Academy runs in conjunction with the college’s sports

qualifications, enabling students to obtain the valuable skills required for gaining employment.

Jason added: “I am extremely proud of our students and how they have represented the college. They have shown immense commitment during the term and they really deserve this success.”

Flower judges make a stop at railway station CHIRK railway station looked ‘bloomin’ lovely’ in time for the arrival of national competition judges.

Wales in Bloom judges visited Chirk station last week to scope out this year’s entry for the competition, organised by Friends of Chirk Station.

John Woods, a judge and vice chairman of Wales in Bloom arrived by train along with fellow judge Shona Carle to assess the station for another possible ‘Outstanding’ award in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards 2017.

Friends of Chirk Station were joined by clerk to Chirk Town Council, Shaun Jones, and chairman, Frank Hemmings, to welcome the judges and represent the town.

Christine Ashton, from the Friends of Chirk Station, said that

Race is on to celebrate North Wales’ tourism stars A NEW search has been launched to find the best tourism businesses in Wrexham and Flintshire to celebrate the successes of the £2.8 billion a year visitor industry.

Nominations are being sought for Go North Wales Awards after last year’s first event proved a huge hit.

And with many more categories up for grabs, organisers North Wales Tourism are hoping for an even bigger and better Oscars-style ceremony this time around.

The awards aim to shine a spotlight on excellence across the board in areas such as accommodation, catering, attractions and the best use of digital to promote businesses.

They are run by private sector body North Wales Tourism and will be handed out at a gala dinner on Thursday, November 16 at Venue Cymru, Llandudno.

The guest of honour will be the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for the Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, who is also Clwyd South AM. This year eight new categories have been added to the awards, including best self-catering accommodation, best hotel, best B&B, best restaurant, best marketing campaign, sports/adventure tourism, young tourism person and art in tourism awards.

A judging panel will then draw up a shortlist in each category, with the shortlist announced on October 23.

Houghton’s challenge

FOOTBALL: Captain Steph Houghton has challenged England to shed their reputation as slow starters to major tournaments when they begin their Women's European Championship campaign against Scotland on Wednesday.

The high-stakes clash in Utrecht sees the Lionesses take on a Scotland side who are hampered by the absence of their world-class playmaker Kim Little, absent from the tournament due to a knee injury.

True debut for Tree

GOLF: A first Open appearance for England's Toby Tree will be a true debut as he has never attended a major either as a fan or a player.

Big winners on City Plate Day THERE were big-priced winners on City Plate Day, which witnessed a surprise win for 20-1 chance Viscount Barfield in the feature race, writes ARTHUR SHONE. Trained by Andrew Balding, the leading trainer at the course this season with six winners to date, the former course and distance winner was given a great ride from Rob Hornby.

Having established a lead, Hornby held on well by a head from the heavily-backed jolly Jungle Cat with Franny Norton aboard.

Jallota was a further two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Speaking after the race, Hornby said: “It is so nice to get back on this horse, we struck up a good partnership last season.

“He has improved over the winter, and the beauty of this horse is that you can spin him on a sixpence, he just loves this tight course.

“It is so good to ride a big race winner for the boss again.”

“Franny gave the horse a great ride and dictated the pace as we knew he would stay.”

The winner is on a mark of 84 at present and looks certain to go up at least 10lbs for this win, which would put him on to a mark of 94, and if he keeps improving it would not be a surprise if he developed into a St Leger horse.

There was another big priced winner of the CSP Audio Visual Handicap Stakes, which went to the 12-1 shot Storm King under Steve Drowne who beat Theos Lolly by three parts of a length with Age Of Elegance a length and a half back in third.

The winner is trained by the Farndon-born trainer David Griffiths, who also had a winner at York with Take Cover.

Under Fran Berry, the well backed son of Kodiac looked all over the winner until caught in the final two strides by the James Given trained Gift In Time under a very confident ride by Adam Beschizza to win a thriller by a neck from the graveyard draw eight.

■ TOUGH DAY – Chris Froome

Scare for Froome CHRIS FROOME survived a scare to retain the yellow jersey as Bauke Mollema won stage 15 of the Tour de France to Le Puy-en-Velay.

Dutchman Mollema attacked from the remnants on the breakaway in the closing stages of the 189.5 kilometre ride from Laissac-Severac L’Eglise to take his first career Tour win.

Froome had needed a wheel change when the race was on approaching the Col de Peyra Taillade, and lost almost a minute before spending eight kilometres chasing his way back.

But the three-time Tour winner held on and retains his lead of 18 seconds over Italian Fabio Aru, with Frenchman Romain Bardet a further five seconds down in third place.

Bardet’s AG2R La Mondiale team had upped the pace as the category one Peyra Taillaide - the penultimate climb of the day approached with around 40km left, and had already distanced Froome once before the Team Sky man was forced to pull over.

Froome took a quick wheel change from Michal Kwiatkowski before Mikel Nieve and Sergio Henao helped pace him up the climb.

“I had a problem with my rear wheel that had to be changed,” Froome said. “Kwaitkowski gave me his wheel because the team car was far away. We did all we could to return to the top of the race.

Thanks to my team-mates, Sergio Henao and Mikel Nieve, who helped me. It was a time of stress.”

said: “The step up in trip helped today and the ground was better for him as he did not act on the soft on his debut at Haydock. He will improve a lot more from this race today.”

The winner was drawn out with the washing in stall nine but he hung badly across the course and ended up racing alone on the stands side.

This tactic worked wonders as the filly won by three lengths from Avon Breeze under Callum Rodriguez with Turanga Leela a further three parts of a length back in third.

Murtagh was elated when I spoke to him afterwards, saying: “He kept hanging right across the course, but once we reached the running rail I was able to keep her straight and she was going away at the end.”

On a day of big priced winners, it came as no surprise to see Kryptos land the Getting Out Stakes at 11-1 under Nicola Currie, who came late and fast on the John Berry gelding to deny Plant Pot Power under Rossa Ryan by three parts of a length with Proud Archi a similar distance back in third.

Fahey and Murtagh went on to complete a double on Boundsy in the West Way Nissan Handicap Stakes aboard Boundsy who stuck his neck out for a game neck success over the well backed jolly Love Oasis with Norton in the plate.

The fast finishing Amber Fort was a further head back in third.

Ritchie defends shorter tour

OUTGOING Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie has defended the reduction in the number of matches on future British and Irish Lions tours.

The Lions’ drawn series in New Zealand generated huge interest in the team but, when the red shirts next convene in South Africa in four years’ time, it is unlikely the 10match, six-week format will return.

An agreement on the global fixture calendar was reached in March, with an eight-game minimum set aside for the 2021 trip.

Capping it at that number - as well as shaving a week off the tour - has strong advocates in the powerful club game.

John Spencer, the team’s tour manager in New Zealand, has been openly critical of those suggestions, indicating it puts the entire concept at risk, but Lions director Ritchie disagrees with those thoughts.

“I think the Lions was an essential part of the global season, it is and it remains so. We’ve clearly agreed it will remain an essential part until at least 2032 and probably beyond,” he explained.

“It’s been agreed to, but there will be some tinkering around the edges.

We also agreed an eight-match tour certainly does work. I think the future is secure and I think that was the case almost irrespective of what the results were (in New Zealand).

“I think it (eight matches) can work and that was the discussion we’ve had.”

There is broad agreement on both sides of the debate that Warren Gatland’s side were pressed into action too early on this occasion, playing against a Provincial Barbarians XV just three days after their long-haul flight.

But, while the coaches would rather extend the training time before that curtain-raiser, Ritchie suggests abolishing it entirely along with one other non-Test.

“It’s fairly simple to say the first game - this one was two or three days in - why wouldn’t you take that one out?” he said.

“It’s more time to acclimatise to the country. The next tour is South Africa, which is pretty much the same, so you could easily see how you take one out and it would be helpful losing one more game.

“I don’t think that would be a great issue.

“We’re very clear on what needs to happen. I think the Lions is in a fantastic place, very much a protected one, and I think we can all start looking forward to 2021 in South Africa.”

On matters closer to home, Ritchie also pondered a job for his successor

- replacing his own successful appointee to the role of England boss, Eddie Jones, when the time comes.

The Australian has already won two Six Nations crowns since becoming the RFU’s first foreign head coach and Ritchie believes it would be desirable, though not necessary, for

the next candidate for the job to be homegrown.

“I’d like to hope it is,” he said.

“But I’m of the view it doesn’t matter what nationality the coach is as long as it’s the best coach.

“If the best coach is English that’s an advantage, but I don’t think it is essential.”

Hamilton destroyed the field in qualifying and his race performance was equally emphatic as he recorded his fourth consecutive win on home turf.

Hamilton, 32, faced a backlash for missing a promotional event in London earlier this week, preferring to take a two-day break on the Greek island of Mykonos with his friends instead.

But after such a crushing display Hamilton will feel as though his decision has been vindicated, with his victory here helping to get his stuttering championship charge firmly back on track.

Hamilton blasted out of his marks to leave a stream of red in his Mercedes mirrors with Raikkonen, Vettel and the faststarting Max Verstappen jostling for position. Verstappen managed to get the jump on Vettel to demote the championship leader to fourth.

Behind the front-runners Daniil Kvyat is a man under pressure at Toro Rosso and he will have done little to ease the uncertainty surrounding his future after he

punted his team-mate Carlos Sainz out of the race.

Kvyat put two wheels on to the dirt through the super-fast Becketts section, and with his car unhinged, he thudded into Sainz’s car. The damage sustained by Sainz was terminal, but Kvyat managed to get to the end of the race. He was given a drive-through penalty however.

The collision on lap two led to the safety car being deployed to deal with the debris, and Sainz’s abandoned Toro Rosso. At the end of lap five the safety car was in, and Hamilton led the field away.

Hamilton was in cruise control but Verstappen was left fending off the challenge of Vettel for third. On lap 13, the two came within inches of a collision as Vettel attempted to pass Verstappen, but the Dutchman held firm.

“He wants to play bumper cars,” Verstappen said over the team radio. Vettel wagged his hand at the teenager, but said nothing over the radio. Seven laps later however Vettel got his man by virtue of pitting one lap later.

Hamilton stopped for his one and only change of tyres at the end of lap 25 and left the pits in charge of the race. That looked to be that, before the race came to life in the closing moments.

First, Bottas stormed round the outside of Vettel on the Hangar Straight to move up to third. He quickly took second place as Raikkonen suffered a puncture.

Vettel, also struggling with his tyres, suffered the same fate as his Ferrari team-mate on the penultimate lap.

Raikkonen completed the podium with Verstappen fourth.

Fernando Alonso retired from the race following another engine failure, while Britain’s Jolyon Palmer did not even start after his Renault expired on the parade lap.

“It is never easy,” said Hamilton.

“The feeling I can’t describe. It is amazing to be out here and I am so proud to see all these flags everywhere.

“The support has been immense and I am really proud that I could do this for you all. The team has been faultless. Valtteri has done an exceptional job as well, so it has been the perfect weekend for us.”

Asked by podium interviewer and actor Owen Wilson if he was going to win the championship, he replied: “That’s the plan, but there is a long way to go.”

A jubilant Hamilton, pointing at the fans, added: “You guys, I am coming over there to crowd surf.

Just so you know. I am going to change. Be ready for me.”

Owen catches the eye as Hall maintain push Cheshire County LEAGUE

CHESTER BOUGHTON HALL re-affirmed their Premier League title credentials in a convincing five-wicket victory at Grappenhall.

Will Owen (4-49) was instrumental in securing the win as he and Jack Williams (3-23) helped to dismiss the hosts for 119.

Opener Warren Godwin hit 25 to get the visitors’ response started, before he was dismissed by Sam Guest (3-39).

The wickets of Alex Money and Lee Dixon fell cheaply before a combined mid-order stand of 43 from Harry Killoran and Williams secured victory.

The win keeps Hall within touching distance of leaders Alderley Edge, who edged to a narrow twowicket success at seventh-placed Didsbury.

Michael Taylor and Liam Booth hit 68 and 86 respectively to steer Didsbury to 232 all out.

The visitors’ chase began slowly but gained momentum in the mid-order with Ed Fluck’s 50 and Thomas Foreman’s 36 runs.

Charlie Reid and Hamish Winter-Irving survived the innings and helped Alderley to 233-8 to preserve their lead at the top of the table.

Sam Hatcher top-scored for in-form Toft as his 72 run contribution helped secure victory by 26 runs against visiting Hyde.

Chasing a score of 234 all out, Hyde began strongly with knocks of 52 from opener David Fitzsimmons and 50 from skipper James Duffy.

But Toft bowlers James Lomas (5-39) and Rob Jones (5-59) combined to end the Hyde comeback which ended on 208.

Bramhall claimed a slender nine-run victory in their low-scoring game at Timperley.

The bowling of Nathan Brown (4-31) and Rudolf Brenner (3-26) limited Bramhall to 110 all out.

But Timperley fell short of their meagre target thanks to an inspired bowling display by Christopher Sanders (7-26).

Division Two leaders Barrow lost by seven wickets at third-placed Lindow.

Batting first, the visitors’ allocated 50 overs yielded 142 for eight with opening duo Iroshan De Silva and Alex Reid hitting 29 runs apiece.

Lindow made light work of their chase as Ryan O’Brien blasted six fours in his knock of 71 not out to guide the hosts to 147 for three and a commanding victory.

Alvanley’s Michael Rowlands blasted 50 from just 64 balls in a five-wicket triumph at Mobberley.

With the hosts batting first, visiting bowlers Billy Ouzonidis (4-31) and Lee Aisworth (3-36) combined to limit them to 130 all out.

Opener Rowlands then led by example as he smashed four sixes and three fours on his way to a fine half century.

Andy Bennion’s 34 not out added to their 134 for five score and consolidated fourth place in the league standings for Alvanley.

A disappointing score of 110 all out cost Christleton dear, as visiting Brooklands strolled to a six-wicket win.

The bowling figures of Rob Leach (4-27) and Mark Law (3-23) limited Christleton’s scoring opportunities with Atif Bajwa and Josh Morgnan Jones sharing a top score of 20 runs apiece.

The Brooklands chase was a straightforward affair with 47 runs for Jack Bagshaw an innings high as they made 111 for four from just 18 overs.

Parry proves too hot to handle for visitors

DAN PARRY produced another outstanding performance as Brymbo recorded a five-wicket home win over Premier Division rivals Hawarden Park.

Parry was too hot to handle for the Hawarden batsmen as he bagged a brilliant 7-61 from his 12 overs as Hawarden were bowled out for 151 inside 34 overs.

There had been little sign of what was to come before Parry got the ball in his hand as Wes Sleep had eased his way to 57 at the top of the order for Hawarden, who were 98 for three at one stage.

Hawarden managed to chip away at the Brymbo batting lineup, but after Mohamed Nilam Jayman (42) and Conner Davies (34) had broken the back of the run chase, Parry struck an unbeaten 26 to see his side home.

Chirk boosted their battle with the drop courtesy of a welcome 37-run success over fellow strugglers Connah’s Quay.

Having been asked to bat first Chirk set about posting 226 with Nathan Aldridge (65) and Andrew Swarbrick (49 not out) in the runs as both Darren Leach and Luke Bennett claimed three wickets.

Quay’s reply got off to a stuttering start, before Brendan Bezuidenhout (55), Mitch Van Wyk (39) and David Fox (22) rebuilt the innings.

But once they departed wickets fell at regular intervals and Quay collapsed to 189 all out, Jonny Phillips (4-22) and Swarbrick (356) the pick of the Chirk attack.

Gresford were also winners as they saw off struggling Llanrwst by seven wickets.

Llanrwst were restricted to just

154 for seven after winning the toss and electing to bat, a total which Gresford passed with the minimum of fuss.

Matty Thompson led the scoring for Gresford with 62, while Matty Cree hit 56.

St Asaph's fine season continued as they recorded a convincing 81-run home win over Menai Bridge.

Matthew Ryan (65) and Will Ryan (47) combined as St Asaph posted 206 for eight from their 50 overs, Zach Ringrose and Dion Holden with three wickets apiece.

Jason Foulkes (4-36) and Paul Fleming (3-39) then took over with the ball as Menai were bowled out for just 125, opener Jack Gower finishing 64 not out Russ Boswell (5-27) and Matthew Humphreys (4-18) were in the wickets as Mochdre recorded a tie with Bangor.

Chasing 146 for victory, Bangor were cruising at 111 for three, before Boswell and Humphreys combined to earn their side a share of the spoils.

Ingram stars in Glamorgan win

COLIN INGRAM blazed his way to a second century in the space of eight days as Glamorgan clinched a five-wicket victory over Essex in a run-fest at Chelmsford.

Ingram survived being dropped on 13 to post a format-best 114 from 55 balls which contained eight fours and nine sixes, his second ton in three games having also reached three figures with 101 against Sussex last Sunday.

His efforts went a long way to helping Glamorgan overhaul Essex’s 219 for four, in which Varun Chopra went to his maiden T20 century with a splendid 103 not out from 59 balls, with six fours and eight maximums.

Glamorgan head coach Robert Croft could not hide his delight at his side’s performance, tweeting: “Try not to tweet

County Cricket T20 BLAST about our Glamorgan team but on this occasion I'm going to. That was breathtakingly brilliant!”

Elsewhere in the South Group, Somerset, led by rookie Adam Hose, clinched their first win of the campaign after defeating Middlesex by 21 runs at Uxbridge.

Jos Buttler displayed an element of restraint, but his unbeaten 42 carried Lancashire to a comfortable five-wicket triumph over Derbyshire at Old Trafford in the North Group.

His ferocious ball striking has made him one of the world's most dangerous batsmen in limited overs, but, with a manageable 152 for eight to chase down, Buttler reined

himself in and only struck three fours.

But his efforts - complemented by 24 not out from Ryan McLaren in an unbroken 43run stand that featured plenty of running between the wickets - steered the Red Rose to victory with nine balls to spare.

Leicestershire continued their 100 per cent winning start to the season after seeing off Birmingham Bears by nine runs at Edgbaston.

Luke Ronchi's 23-ball 46 was the highlight as Leicestershire stuttered to 147 for nine after being invited to bat first, but, bolstered

by Colin Ackermann's three for 21, they were able to restrict Birmingham to 138 for eight.

England left chasing a record for victory ENGLAND stopped Hashim Amla and Dean Elgar short of their centuries but were powerless to prevent South Africa extending their control of the second Test at Trent Bridge.

The hosts will face a ground-record, and almost certainly even world-record, run chase by the time the tourists are done in their second innings. By tea on day three they had reached 236 for four, for an overall lead of 366.

England endured a tough morning, but were lifted by two quick wickets just before lunch and then bowled well but struck just once in the afternoon.

South Africa were already in a position of such dominance, as they seek to level the fourmatch series at 1-1, that Amla (87) and his captain Faf du Plessis simply dug in as necessary before prospering again in a stand of 62.

Nothing went right for England until then, though.

Stuart Broad would have had Amla caught behind on 25 if England had gone to DRS, but no one in the ground - the bowler included - seemed remotely convinced of the edge later demonstrated by technology.

Then in Broad’s next over, Elgar speared a drive high to Anderson’s left at gully, where he did brilliantly to get even fingertips on barely a halfchance.

Not only did Elgar survive on 55 - but as the ball was diverted to Stokes at cover, Amla could have gone had the fielder chosen and hit the target at the non-striker’s end as the batsmen dithered and then aborted an

attempted single.

Joe Root turned to the spin of Liam Dawson and soon had reasonable cause for regret as Amla followed Elgar to his halfcentury with a nonchalant six in an over dispatched with alarming ease for 14.

England succeeded at last when Stokes bounced out Elgar - who got in a tangle and was caught at leg-gully as he tried to bail out of a faulty hook shot.

Stokes then produced another brute of a delivery first ball to Quinton de Kock, again round the wicket to the left-hander, this time somehow fended safely but unconvincingly down to fine-leg for a single.

To only his fourth ball, De Kock was sufficiently discomforted to edge the returning Anderson behind and suddenly it was South Africa

rather than England who needed the lunch break.

Already, however, Trent Bridge’s highest previously achieved fourth-innings target of 284 - by England against New Zealand - had been passed.

Only 15 runs came in the 10 overs after lunch as Stokes especially gave little away and posed a plausible threat.

But Du Plessis and Amla were unconcerned, with so much time left in this match - and it was not until the number three got a little greedy at the start of Dawson’s next spell that he paid the price, lbw to the slow leftarmer for the second time in successive innings.

This time, he was up the pitch and missed one that turned, but England still needed DRS to overturn Paul Reiffel’s initial not-out decision.

Tammy has confidence in team-mates ENGLAND opener Tammy Beaumont is confident there are match-winners throughout the side as preparations continue for tomorrow’s World Cup semifinal against South Africa.

HEP CAHILL has signed a new twoyear deal with Widnes Vikings.

The New Zealand-born forward joined Widnes from Crusaders in 2012 and has since scored six tries in 123 games, including one in 11 this season.

He began his career in Australia's National Rugby League with Melbourne Storm, before joining Crusaders for the 2011 campaign.

"I've been here since the club returned to Super League in 2012," Cahill, pictured, said. "I want to continue to be a part of what Denis and the club are building.

“Widnes is my home now.”

Cahill couldn’t mark his new contract with victory as Widnes lost 36-8 at home to Wakefield.

Leeds Rhinos prop Keith Galloway will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the 10-7 win over Hull FC, while Super League's leading try-scorer Greg Eden scored twice in leaders Castleford's comfortable 38-14 win over Salford, but also suffered a shoulder injury.

Eden scored his 33rd and 34th tries of the season but injured his shoulder as he landed badly when diving in the corner for the second of his scores.

Frustration as the Cru miss out on top eight CRUSADERS had to settle for ninth place before League One splits despite a 36-13 victory over Coventry Bears, writes JOSH PAY.

Needing Oxford to get a positive result at Keighley, Crusaders’ top eight hopes were ended as the Cougars recorded a convincing 92-6 home success.

With Keighley winning, Crusaders finished locked on points with the Cougars and Workington, who had a far superior points difference to Mike Grady’s men.

In their quest for victory, the Wrexham-based outfit got off to a quick start, as they opened the scoring with just four minutes gone.

After breaking the line, James Dandy found Taylor Prell, who finished the move by crossing the whitewash beneath the posts.

Despite opening the scoring, a poor period followed for the Welsh side.

Coventry’s first try came with 10 minutes on the clock as Jordan Gale collected a high kick before grounding the ball, only for the score to be ruled out for a knock-on in the build up.

The home side’s next effort came moments later as Jack Morrison found himself held up over the line, keeping the score at 6-0 in the Crusaders’ favour.

As the Bears continued to pile on the pressure they earned a repeat set. A perfectly weighted kick from Gale landed in the hands of Crusaders’ Danny Price, who was then taken into touch by the chasing Coventry defence, giving them possession.

Despite keeping the hosts out for over 20 minutes, the Crusaders defence finally gave in.

After losing the ball once again, the Crusaders were this time made to pay as Jamahl Hunte made a fantastic run down the wing before grounding the ball to level the score.

Following a good attacking set from the Bears, Gale slotted a dropgoal.

But, as the first half entered the final few minutes, the Crusaders retook the lead through a well worked try, Simon Atherton stepping inside before passing to Tommy Johnson, who ran through a gap in the Coventry defence to score.

Looking to make amends for their poor first half performance, the visitors started brightly after the break.

Following a fine run from Atherton, Joe Bate made use of the ball as he crashed over the line from close range.

The Crusaders added to their lead with 55 minutes on the clock.

As they attacked the home side’s line, Price sent a looping pass out wide to Earl Hurst, who ran the ball over in the corner.

Minutes later the Crusaders were in again. After shifting the ball along the line, it ended up with Atherton, who darted through a gap in the home side’s defence to score.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, the Crusaders extended their lead.

Federer can’t stop breaking records

ROGER FEDERER trounced a tearful Marin Cilic to become the first man ever to win eight singles titles at Wimbledon.

It took the 35-year-old just an hour and 41 minutes to clinch by far his most onesided Wimbledon final triumph and extend his overall record with a 19th grand slam singles title.

The 6-3 6-1 6-4 victory continues Federer’s magnificent season in what should be his tennis dotage, but even the most ardent of the Swiss’ fans - and there were many packed into Centre Court - did not want the final to play out like this.

Cilic started well but it became clear early in the second set that something was badly wrong with the Croatian.

At 3-0, he sobbed uncontrollably into his towel as he discussed the situation with the doctor and it looked like he might not be able to continue.

There has only ever been one retirement in a Wimbledon men’s singles final, back in 1911, and Cilic at least had the support of the crowd as he opted to play through the pain.

He had what looked like blisters on his left foot taped at the start of the third set and willed himself to make it something of a contest.

Federer continued to do what he had to do and, after clinching victory with an ace, raised his fists in the air.

It was understandably a slightly muted celebration but the emotion came for Federer when he looked up to his wife Mirka and their four children in his player box.

It is the first time his threeyear-old twin boys Leo and Lenny have seen him win Wimbledon, and Federer said: “They have no clue what’s going on. They probably think it’s a nice view and a nice playground. This is a wonderful

A month short of his 36th birthday, Federer is the oldest man in the Open era to win the Wimbledon singles title.

He is also only the second man after Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros to lift the trophy eight times at a single slam and is now one short of Martina Navratilova’s all-time record.

With his 19th slam title, Federer restored his four-slam lead over Nadal, taking another step towards ensuring his legacy will be safe at least for this generation.

For the next generation, meanwhile, this was another kick in the teeth.

No player outside of Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray has won Wimbledon since 2002.

Djokovic and Murray’s dip in 2017 looked to have opened the door only for Federer and Nadal to slam it shut, locking out the first three slams for the first time since 2010.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Federer, who

took six months off to recover fully from knee surgery after losing here to Milos Raonic in the semi-finals 12 months ago.

“I’ve got to take more time off,” said Federer.

“I’m not sure it’s going to work out like this every time.

Better than holding the trophy and winning today is just being healthy. It just means the world to me.

“The tournament that I played, not dropping a set, it’s magical, I can’t believe it yet.

It’s disbelief that I can achieve such heights.

“I wasn’t sure if I would ever be back here in another final after last year but I always believed I could come back, and if you believe in your life you can go a long way. I kept on believing and dreaming and here I am today. I hope this wasn’t my last match and I can come back next year and try to defend the title.”

Muguruza, ranked 15th in the world, became only the fifth player outside the top 10 to win the women’s singles by beating Venus Williams 7-5 6-0.

This was the fourth win in a row since reporting back following the summer break and it would have been by a bigger margin had Wrexham taken their chances.

Stafford put up a fight and Keates admits it was the kind of test he was looking for in Wrexham’s build up to the new National League campaign.

“I knew what we were coming into and I know their manager well,” said Keates.

“I played here last season and you look at the big player up front, he is the kind of centre forward you might come up against next season.

“They are going to get in your face and they are going to make it tough for you.

“The first two games were early on and we got through them, we had a good game out in Portugal but now these are the more realistic games.

“It was a test for us and we got loads out of it.”

Wrexham continue their preparations for a 10th campaign in non-league football with a trip to Warrrington Town, who like Stafford,

operate in the Northern Premier League’s top-flight, tomorrow night.

And Keates will be hoping for a repeat of Saturday’s ideal start against Stafford when Wrexham took the lead with just 43 seconds on the clock.

Jennings picked out Boden who did well to take the ball down before finding the net with a well executed chip over goalkeeper Adam Whitehouse.

But the lead only last five minutes as Stafford equalised after Shaun Pearson was harshly adjudged to have fouled Dan Westwood in the area, Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson converting the resulting penalty.

Wrexham regrouped and Jennings sent in a teasing cross that was headed wide by a trialist midfielder, while Fortnam-Tomlinson directed a header wide of goal for Stafford at the other end.

The Reds almost reclaimed the lead on 25 minutes following a quick break forward as Jack Mackreth whipped in a cross and Boden’s effort was blocked by Whitehouse, who then made a more comfortable save to keep out the lively Mackreth’s low drive.

Sam Wedgbury’s shot deflected onto the roof of the net as Wrexham continued to press and Boden headed over from Leo Smith’s cross.

A neat move then led to Smith’s deflected shot falling off target and the midfielder then teed up fullback Jennings, who was unable to keep his effort down from a good position in the area.

The 25-year-old has returned to Chester on a two-year deal, after leaving Macclesfield Town, and opened his Blues’ account for a second time in the preseason opener at Runcorn Town last Monday, heading home in a 5-1 win.

The central midfielder, who hails from Rotherham, has developed a reputation for weighing in at key moments in front of goal, netting seven times in 46 appearances for Halifax Town in the 2015/16, before adding five strikes in 36 matches for the Silkmen last term.

However, with the likes of Jordan Chapell, Craig Mahon, Ross Hannah and Harry White ahead of him on the pitch for the Blues, James explained his focus will be on protecting the defence in a holding role alongside Paul Turnbull, in order to allow the attacking talent greater freedom in Jon McCarthy’s new-look side.

“It all depends on the role really, but obviously it’d be nice to chip in with a few goals,” he said.

“I’ve scored enough goals in the last couple of seasons to help out but obviously we’ve got good attacking players here.

“Truthfully I’m just going to back them up really. My job is to give them the ball and let them do their thing with it, they’ll bring plenty of goals and all the attacking players can deliver on that front.

“I might be able to chip in with a few but I just want to do my best for the team.”

“We’ve done a lot of ball work in training, it’s been really intense,” James continued.

“But nothing can replicate that intensity of playing matches and what the games are going to throw up. They throw up situations that are totally different to what you’ve done in training so it’s good to get those first few games out of the way.

“It’s been structured by the gaffer in a really good way, where we’ve got a lot of volume of training time in the first few weeks, lots of fitness work.

“Then a lot of games in a period of two weeks, and with the games you can go flat out in the 45 minutes you’re playing in, you can go for it at

the right intensity which we certainly did at Runcorn and again against Flint.

“It hasn’t been like a typical preseason game, we wanted to go with that intensity and ensure that we did what we want to do in league games.”

As far as recovery is concerned, James winces at the thought of the dreaded ice bath, but is happy to get involved with all the recovery methods instructed to the first-team squad by McCarthy’s backroom staff.

He also revealed the players are abiding to a strict meal plan in order to be in the best shape possible when the opening day clash at Solihull Moors rolls around on August 5.

“Everything is being done

properly, the recovery has been superb,” he added.

“We’ve got meal plans, the structure has been fantastic and we’ve got to stick with that and all the recovery stuff, then hopefully we can keep that intensity going in these games in the week ahead, and be ready to go when we get to the start of the season.”

■ Former Chester and Wrexham playmaker Elliott Durrell has signed a two-year deal with Macclesfield.

Durrell, who was not retained by Chester at the end of last season, said: “I’ve played against Macclesfield a few times already in my career and they really do play football the right way.

Flint up and running against top-flight visitors FLINT TOWN UNITED registered an impressive 2-1 success over West Brom under-23s.

The Silkmen got off to a sluggish start as the Baggies took an 11th minute lead from the penalty spot when Alex Bradley sent Ben Jones the wrong way.

With Shaun Donnellan, who had spent last season out on loan with Stevenage, effectively marshalling the visitors’ defence, and Nick Clayton-Phillips pulling the strings in the midfield, West Brom looked extremely comfortable.

As half-time approached Flint finally showed signs of hitting their stride, and some pressure on the visitors’ goal almost paid dividends, but no-one could force the ball home from a frantic goalmouth scramble.

In the second half, Flint were a side transformed and with much more purpose and energy on display they restored parity.

A good move down the right, ended with Mark Cadwallader delivering an excellent ball into the centre for Andy Brown to convert via a deft flick that sent the ball spinning into the net.

Sustained pressure culminated in Flint earning themselves a 63rd minute penalty after Brown fed Luke Tyson, who was just about to shoot at goal when he was bundled over.

Cadwallader stepped up to calmly convert the resulting penalty.

Haseldin was pleased with his side’s display, saying: "We played some good football this afternoon on a tight pitch. Also, well done to Jake Cooke and Owen Davies on their first team debuts and both did well.

“I'm glad we took the game with Prestatyn Sports, I think they will do well this season and good luck to them."

The West Midlands Regional League visitors took an early lead when Will Wells converted a penalty.

Aaron Bowen twice went close only to be denied by the keeper, but the Wingmakers drew level shortly before the break when Pavel Vieira seized on a loose ball to drive home from close range.

In an increasingly tight second half, Riley fired home a stunning 30-yard shot into the top corner to settle the contest after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

Buckley Town were beaten 4-0 in their home game against Lancashire side Charnock Richard. Trailing 1-0 at the interval, the hosts shipped three more goals in the game’s closing stages in a comfortable win for Charnock.

Cefn Albion were 6-1 winners against Gresford Athletic Reserves with Paul Griffiths, Jimmy Jones, Conner Kendrick, Dan Holland and Alex Williams (2) netting for the hosts.

CRISTIANO RONALDO will not be returning to Manchester United this summer, with manager Jose Mourinho admitting a move for the Portuguese has always been “mission impossible.”

Last month the 32-year-old Real Madrid striker became disgruntled as he felt singled out for disproportionate treatment by Spanish prosecutors, who accused him of evading tax of 14.7million euros (£12.8m).

Those allegations were denied in a statement by Ronaldo’s management company Gestifute and the attacker was believed to have told those close to him he wanted to quit the club and Spain.

That stance seems to have softened and talk of a summer return to United has dissipated.

United boss Mourinho worked with Ronaldo in Madrid and says a reunion was never on the cards.

“We have never thought about it because he is too much of an important player for his club, of great economic power,” he said. “We have not been able to find for whatever reason anything that could have made us think that Ronaldo could leave.

“I am not a defender of my club once I waste time on players who are mission impossible.”

Mourinho gave a list of summer targets to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward with the hope of making four top-quality additions.

United have so far brought in Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku, with the latter’s arrival said to have ended their interest in Alvaro Morata.

Chelsea's latest arrival, Tiemoue Bakayoko, has hailed former Blues stars Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele as two major influences in his career.

Bakayoko has joined the Premier League champions from Monaco in a deal worth a reported £40million.

Makelele was technical director at the principality club during Bakayoko's formative years, becoming something of a mentor to the 22-year-old.

"Makelele helped me greatly," said Bakayoko, who added of Drogba: "He is definitely an example I wish to follow, be it the footballer or the person. He showed the whole world what he was and I saw that and admired it."

Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren believes the arrival of winger Mohamed Salah will help them break down the stubborn defences which caused them so many problems last season.

Jurgen Klopp's side displayed scintillating form in the first half the campaign but the loss of speedy forward Sadio Mane to the African Nations Cup coincided with a slump.

Lovren believes the addition of Salah, who scored on his first appearance for the club in Friday's 1-1 friendly draw at Wigan, will help address that issue.

"We saw and we will see more of his qualities. He needs more time as he's only had six days with us and everything is completely new (but) I think he will be perfect in this system."

NORTH WALES CRUSADERS fell agonisingly short in their play-off quest despite a 36-13 win at Coventry Bears.

The Cru turned in a solid performance in their fi f nal phase one ffiixture, which sees them fi f nish ninth in the league standings.

As well as needing to win against the Bears, the Wrexh x am side also needed Keighley Cougars to slip up in their home match with Oxf x ord.

But the Yorkshire side stormed to a 92-6 win against the struggling visitors to clinch the fi f nal remaining Super Eight berth.

DEAN KEATES wants to see Wrexh x am taking more of their chances.

Wrexh x am picked up a fourth successive victory in pre-season as the Reds triumphed 2-1 against Stafford Rangers on Saturday.

Striker Scott Boden and left-back James Jennings scored for the Reds.

However, Wrexh x am squandered a number of opportunities to add to their tally with Keates left wanting more.

“It is another win,” said Keates.

“Obviously we want to win games, it is a habit, and it is something that we asked them before the game to win.

“I’m disappointed we did not keep a clean sheet but we created a lot of chances and could have made the game a lot easier for ourselves, but we didn’t.”

Keates, pleased with the finishes from Boden and Jennings, continued: “As I said, we had loads of chances and we are not taking them. I would be more concerned if we wasn’t creating chances but there is something for us to start working on now on the more attacking side.”

LUCAS DAWSON and Liam Davies have spoken of their delight at signing new contracts with Chester.

On a busy day of contract activity prior to Chester's 1-1 friendly draw at Hyde, midfi f elder Dawson penned a one-year deal with the Blues while winger Davies extended his stay for the whole season having initially signed for six i months.

The deals came as Evan Horwood was released from his contract and joined Bala Town.

"I'm delighted it's fi f nally been done and now I can concentrate on the season ahead," Dawson said, ahead of tonight's friendly at Bala Town. "I had a bad end to last season but I've worked hard in pre-season to earn myself a new contract."

Davies added: "I'd spoke to Mark (Maguire, CEO) and the gaffer before the season started and it was always in everyone's minds to sort the deal out until the end of the season.

"It's fantastic and I'm ready to work hard for Chester now."
