We present to you the 3rd edition of our ED&I newsletter. When we started this newsletter, we couldn’t foresee the amount of involvement we would receive from our colleagues. This issue especially showcases the many kind, caring, determined and involved people who work at Reaction Engines. It’s been inspiring for us to read and share with you their stories and thoughts. Moreover, the month of June is about celebrating, supporting and getting involved in the diverse communities around us, and one in particular – LGBTQ+, is the highlight of this issue. By sharing some history and challenges this community has overcome over the years we hope to shed a light on the importance of showing support in fighting those struggles that are still prevalent today.

Working Parents / Carers / Guardians

March 21st was World Down Syndrome Day – I know this because I received a plate of cookies delivered to my door from one of my former scouts with this syndrome who was looking to celebrate The unexpected treat sparked some thoughts in me about inclusion and team culture from my times as a scout leader and I would like to share with you one such experience

When I was a scoutmaster I had the opportunity to lead large groups of young men on sometimes difficult outdoor adventures or to teach them interesting things about the world Their mastery of these concepts was made evident as they passed off associated merit badge requirements to me Of course, no two of these youths were the same and their various aptitudes, skills, and interests meant that there was also differences in which of them was the best at the variety of activities that I tried to plan Among these neckerchief-wearing young people were Ethan and Braden These two friends have been inseparable since childhood Ethan has Down Syndrome and I imagine that Braden became aware of that fact at some point, but you would never have been able to tell any difference in how Braden and Ethan interacted While Ethan would never have won the relay race or been the fastest to pass off the Astronomy merit badge, he nonetheless was an inspiration to our scout team in showing love and everpresent willingness It would have been difficult for another scout to lose hope and give up on a long hike when they could see Ethan determinedly moving forward, even though he was often at the back of the pack Braden could always be found at Ethan’s side offering help and friendship without a trace of stigma
I remember a group of us leaders convening a review board for Braden to quiz him on if he had met the requirements for the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge. As Braden sat down in the hot seat, the other leaders and I looked at each other feeling abashed because we recognized that on this topic, 13-year-old Braden was already the grand master and we should be learning from him –instant pass.
For our awesome Reaction Engines team, I hope that we can all recognize the immeasurable contribution potential of every member of our team – particularly when that manifests in a different form than our own contributions. I want to be kind and determined like Ethan with a smiling attitude regardless of the challenge. I want to be inclusive like Braden, who didn’t need a merit badge or any other recognition to be ever inclusive.
Now I feel like going on a hike together, who’s in?

WORKING PARENTS / CARERS / GUARDIANS
Many of our colleagues at Reaction Engines take a carer role either as a parent or to another adult. It is a role that is time-consuming and takes a physical and emotional toll but can also be very rewarding. The 5th – 11th June 2023 marks Carers Week in the UK and the theme this year is ‘Recognising and Supporting Carers in the Community’. At Reaction Engines, we recognise the very real challenge of maintaining a job whilst caring for others and we would like to use this issue to appreciate you! To make caring visible, we would like to share some experiences of our parent/carer/guardian colleagues that showcase both the rewards of caring for someone as well as the challenges experienced.

THE BIGGEST REWARDS OF
A CARER/PARENT/GUARDIAN
BEING
To watch new people grow, learn, & develop It is really inspiring as a parent to witness the reasoning capability go from literally nothing through to complex problemsolving, and being able to see it incrementally improve over time. Watching babies developing into young people Many skills are formed when parenting that can be used in life such as patience
One highlight of having children for me is watching their personality & sense of humour begin to emerge
It's an amazing process!
Still getting a cuddle from a teenager!
Unconditional love
The kids are great - randomly they give you a massive hug or are really considerate & it melts your heart. Helping them to achieve their dreams
Everything. It's all I ever knew for certain I wanted to do.
Looking after my children - I love seeing them learn new things and their personality develop
The random "I love you's" and "thank you's"
CHALLENGES OF TAKING CARE FOR SOMEONE WHILST ALSO WORKING
Nursery send children home if they have even a sniff of a temperature which can make committing to external meeting, shows, etc. quite challenging.
Nursery is incredibly expensive - this is helped somewhat by the company scheme to reimburse 50%
Working full time & wanting to maximise time spent together is tricky.
Reduced hours & pay to allow collection from school.
Having to fit medical appointments in during work
Accommodating school holidays & juggling childcare
School events during working hours
Lack of sleep & mental health strain.
Significant financial challenges caring for children under the age of 3 when both parents are working (after 3 years there is decent support from the UK government)
Kids don't really like working to a deadline, especially in the morning. Also since they have short days I have to log back into work after their bedtime to finish up
If there is a sudden need for me to come into the office on a day I wouldn't normally, I struggle to arrange drop-off & after school care. The school needs 2 weeks notice for their childcare scheme & I have been caught out a few times
Teacher strikes, sick children & school holidays can be a challenge whilst working from home, especially with my youngest (8yr old girl) who needs a more interaction & help than my 12 yr old son!
My wife took a part time job from full time to be able to care for our children so sacrifices needed to be made financially and physically to achieve this Recognition that you can't have it all ways
The mental strain of being ‘always on’ - whether it’s worrying about them being unwell and that phone call from nursery, planning the morning routine, preparing meals, what time to leave to miss the traffic and collect from nursery etc
Thank you to everyone who shared their experience! Additionally, in our recent survey we asked what Reaction Engines could do to help. We are in the process of reviewing these results and developing solutions. A focus group will also be created for this purpose. If you would like to be part of this group and haven't yet expressed interest, please reach out to Claire Farrow.

CARING FOR SOMEONE WHILE WORKING
ARK THOMAS

Kudos to everyone with caring responsibilities, I have newfound respect for you! Having grown up children and an independent wife, for many years I’ve been able to throw myself into work and pursuits with abandon, with the only part-caring responsibility being for 4 energetic dogs that enjoy a daily walk.

However, that all took a twist at the beginning of March when I received a call to say my wife Simone was in hospital in Austria with a badly broken leg following a skiing accident This was horrible news, and I hadn’t realised just how quickly it would change my view of the ‘normal’ world Following a complex repatriation exercise and an emergency operation to pin the leg in the UK during the junior doctors’ strike (great timing!) we were faced with the reality of at least 3 months in a wheelchair and 6-12 months before walking normally again. My first wake-up was quickly realising our house was totally unsuitable for a disabled person that needed care and was in pain 24/7. The first weeks were challenging and required many adjustments and involved much longer days I still had to work of course but home was on my mind and became a stress factor, we cancelled most of our upcoming plans, including holidays When finally able to leave the house with the wheelchair, with leg in full plaster and extending 90 degrees, we encountered obstacles and hazards that would be familiar to many people with disabilities or even young children in pushchairs. Parking spaces too small, shop gangways too narrow, lifts and disabled toilets out of order (for weeks!), people on phones not looking where they are going...
Our first trip to the pub for a birthday meal a few weeks’ in was great, a much-needed relief, until it came to leaving time and someone (not in the pub!) had parked over the pathway No other option but for 3 of us to carry the wheelchair and occupant across gravel and mud to reach safely Honestly, if I’d been on my own, we would have been stuck and I can only imagine that sort of thing does happen and how distressing it must be I now notice many more wheelchairs than before when navigating our towns and cities; I’ve been looking at our environment differently and I have become more considerate We still have a long way to go in this country and that includes our workplaces My patient is making good progress, the wheelchair on hire will be returning soon and we are looking forward to the next phase of rehabilitation It feels like it has been a long haul, mentally challenging, but I always knew it was temporary and would pass, whereas for others this is a permanent feature of their lives, requiring constant juggling and compromise but still getting on with it.
Caring comes in many forms, I have had a very brief and unexpected taste and it has been a learning experience.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
ANDREW PIOTTI
"I have been with Reaction Engines for about 5 years and have seen the company achieve some incredible things I appreciate the emphasis that Reaction Engines has put on ED&I, and I feel that the training sessions, newsletter, and other initiatives have spurred important conversations and promotes awareness

Between the US and UK teams, I appreciate the international collaboration which brings about different perspectives and ideas We always enjoy hosting our UK colleagues in the US and have great interactions when working in the UK Within all teams, diversity of thought is important for creating innovative solutions and so it’s important to foster an environment where all parties can fully participate and bring their unique experiences to the table "
KERI BROW"Hi everyone! My name is Keri Brown, and I have been a part of the Reaction Engines, In was lucky enough to join the team during the exciting testing of the HTX program, and I was there when we smashed the Mach 5 temperature test point everyone before me had dreamt of! Since then, I’ve been learning and growing on the Operations Team and mastering my skills in insurance, international business, and marketing, and opening up new curiosities and skills in contractual language and negotiation, cybersecurity, writing policies and establishing new processes, and much more I am quite a fan of caffeinated drinks, especially coffee, so this helps me tackle all the varied tasks and learning new things!

I mentioned learning and growing, and that’s the reason I am particularly excited about the ED&I efforts at Reaction Engines I recognize that I am a compassionate person who cares deeply for others, and I also recognize how much there is to learn in the field of ED&I to truly be an ally and a champion for inclusion I genuinely appreciate the RE:Action Newsletter for keeping us informed and growing together in our ED&I journey "
JAMES GREENBAUM"I joined Reaction Engines in summer 2019 after completing my Master’s degree in aerospace engineering. I’ve been fortunate to live in several states across the U.S., including Maryland, New York, Florida, California, Connecticut, and, of course, Colorado. Despite all being in the same country, these places were each unique! I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had and for their positive impact on my view and understanding of ED&I.

Watching the Reaction Engines team evolve over the past four years has been a privilege. Embracing our differences is critical to achieving our company’s great ambitions As we prepare for continued growth and hiring, attentiveness to our ED&I strategy will be paramount and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to support these initiatives "
