A NEW GATEWAY OF OUR REGION

Reach es un nuevo periódico bilingüe quincenal que apuesta con fuerza por realzar los vínculos que unen a Gibraltar y al Campo de Gibraltar. Por ello, y a través del trabajo de sus periodistas, se va a centrar en aquello que realmente identifica a sus pueblos y a sus gentes, esas características que les hacen merecedores de reconocimiento, y en el noble objetivo de la convivencia pacífica.

Este periódico pretende resaltar las cualidades de ambos lados de la frontera. El entendimiento mutuo servirá para templar los ánimos y realzar lo bueno que todos tienen que ofrecer, porque es posible trabajar para tener un horizonte común y velar por los intereses de todos, especialmente aquellos que se han ignorado. ¡Hay tanto que contar! Tantas anécdotas, personajes ilustres, mentes brillantes y tanto talento. ¡Tantos logros! Poco a poco abriremos una senda donde prime la confianza y el respeto.

Una y otra vez las expectativas y esperanzas de la gente de esta comarca se han visto frustradas debido a una falsa realidad que se nos ha impuesto. Esta realidad no nos representa, sino que es el resultado del abandono histórico sobre los valores de vecindad que ha impedido la correcta evolución a ambos lados de la frontera a pesar de que ambas comunidades se han llevado bien en la mayoría de las ocasiones. Por ello Reach se atreve a apostar por lo que realmente nos representa. Y por ello, cada quince días, de forma puntual, iremos mostrando al mundo a través de estas páginas y de nuestro digital lo mucho que valemos ya que caminamos juntos con un sentido renovado de confianza y determinación.

Reach is a new fortnightly bilingual newspaper that is strongly committed to strengthening ties between Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar. For this reason, and through the work of our journalists, we will focus on what really defines the people and towns of our region; the valuable characteristics that should be appreciated and our efforts to achieve peaceful and productive coexistence.

This newspaper seeks to highlight the values on each side of the frontier. Enhanced mutual understanding will serve to clear the air and to highlight the positives that everyone has to offer, because it is indeed possible to have a shared purpose and a common aim of looking after everyone’s interests, especially those who have been ignored.

There are so many stories to tell; tales of heroic deeds, local celebrities, geniuses, brilliant minds and talent – so many achievements! Little by little, we will clear pathways for discussion where trust and respect are paramount.

Time and again the hopes and expectations of the people of this region have been frustrated due to a false reality which has been forced on us. This reality does not represent us, but is the result of a historical abandonment of neighbourly values which have prevented harmonious development on both sides of the frontier., even if our respective peoples have more often than not got on well with each other. This is why Reach puts its faith into what really defines us. Throughout these pages as well as online, every 15 days we will show the world our true identity as we march on together with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.

La nueva obra literaria del escritor gibraltareño Paco Oliva ‘Carta de Amor a La Línea de la Concepción,’ ofrece una mirada nostálgica y original de los años de cierre fronterizo, a través de los ojos de un chaval gibraltareño inquieto y curioso de siete años, que junto a sus padres pasó buena parte de sus vacaciones escolares en la casa de su abuela materna en un maravilloso patio tradicional andaluz en las calles García Bueno y San Cayetano.

El autor nos muestra un mundo muy distinto al nuestro, un estilo de vida, el de la década de los sesenta y setenta, muy alejado de los postulados actuales, las vivencias de un niño creciendo a caballo entre dos hogares complementarios a ambos lados de la frontera, viviendo experiencias y emociones enriquecedoras en una época de aislamiento forzoso.

Sus recuerdos de aquellas inolvidables vacaciones de verano cobran vida en las páginas del libro, la diversión de tardes enteras jugando a las maquinas de PETACO en los futbolines de la Calle San José, descubriendo a Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix y The Who en las máquinas de discos, sesiones maratonianas en el Cine Imperial, con atracones de spaghetti – westerns, todas las películas de Paul Naschy, las delirantes co-producciones de terror Hispano-Italianas, y las primeras entregas del cine de la transición o cine de Destape, germen en su conjunto de la insaciable afición y devoción por el séptimo arte de la cual ha dejado constancia en buena parte de su vida y de su obra.

La Línea era uno de los alicientes estivales, como lo era el Trofeo Ciudad de la Linea y la posibilidad de ver futbol internacional en directo por primera vez, al igual que las carreras de motos en la Ciudad Deportiva donde comenzaba a despuntar una joven estrella que acabó convirtiéndose en el mítico Ángel Nieto.

Las mañanas acompañando a su abuela a hacer la compra en el mercado de abastos, una autentica avalancha de sabores, olores, sonidos e imágenes inolvidables que quedaron grabadas en la retina y en la memoria de nuestro joven amigo.

El libro contiene también amargas reflexiones sobre el cierre de la frontera que tan cruelmente separó a familias y distanció a comunidades, su dificultad para encontrarle algún sentido a la drástica decisión del general Franco que condenó a cientos de gibraltareños en su misma situación a tener que emprender unos viajes absurdos de seis y siete horas para reunirse con sus seres queridos, teniendo que cruzar el estrecho de Gibraltar para llegar prácticamente al punto de partida, puesto que en su caso, su abuela vivía enfrente de la Banqueta, a diez minutos a pie de la frontera.

‘Carta de Amor’ concluye con un final feliz engañoso, la apertura total de la frontera en 1985, la noticia de la década, que el autor, con una dilatada trayectoria como periodista en Gibraltar, cubrió para su periódico en aquel momento. Un acontecimiento que a su juicio ha dado paso, lamentablemente a cuarenta años de oportunidades malgastadas y potencial no realizado, un grado de separación quizás aun mayor que durante el cierre fronterizo, y un fracaso tan estrepitoso como miserable por parte de aquellos que pusieron sus intereses espurios por delante de la normalización de relaciones entre ambas comunidades.

Paco Oliva´s new literary work his seventh, looks at the closed frontier years from beyond Four Corners, from La Línea de la Concepcion, through the curious eyes of a seven year old Gibraltarian child who spent many school vacations with his parents at his grandmother’s house, in the wonderful setting of a traditional Andalusian patio.

The author casts a nostalgic, personal and original look at the late 60s and 70s, conveying the reader to a world and a lifestyle that was very different to modern times, examining what it was like growing up on both sides of the divide and feeling equally at home, straddling emotions and experiences that enriched an otherwise grey period of enforced isolation.

Memories of fun packed summer holidays come alive in these pages, entire afternoons spent playing flipper machines and futbolines in La Linea´s popular pinball palaces, discovering Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix and The Who records in old Wurlitzer jukeboxes, regularly

attending the Cinema Imperial gorging on endless sessions of spaghetti-westerns, Italo-Spanish horror, detective movies and early films of the ‘Destape’ period, all of which were wholly responsible for a burgeoning, burning passion for cinema that would explode in later life and later literature.

It was a pre-internet era and there were many great comics to read Hazañas Belicas, Creepy and Dossier Negro, but also much outdoor excitement to indulge in with his inseparable company of cousins. The La Linea fair was a yearly highlight, the Trofeo Ciudad de La Linea, his first taste of live international football at the Balona stadium was another annual treat, as were the motorcycling races with Angel Nieto, a young, up and coming star, burning rubber in the Ciudad Deportiva circuit.

Accompanying his grandmother to La Línea’s bustling fish market with its avalanche of smells, sights and sounds was another unforgettable experience that

would be ingrained in the memory of an impressionable and inquisitive child.

There are also serious reflections contained in the book, a struggle to understand General Franco’s drastic decision to sever all communications with the Rock, cruelly splitting closely knit families in two. It meant that for the next thirteen years, hundreds of Gibraltarians in the same predicament, would be forced to cross the Strait in six and seven hour boat trips several times a years, to get to La Linea, in his case to his grandmother who lived a mere ten minute walk from the border, via the ports of Tangier and Algeciras, to be reunited with their relatives on the other side.

The book ends on a deceptively upbeat tone with the full frontier opening in 1985, a massive news story which the author, who was already working as a journalist, covered for a daily local newspaper. A momentous event which he laments, has led to 40 years of wasted opportunity and unfulfilled potential, a degree of

separation perhaps even greater than that which existed when the frontier was closed and utter failure from those who should have prioritized the normalization of cross-border relations but pursued other agendas.

Dr. Finlayson disclosed this fascinating snippet of the Rock’s history during her recent well-attended lecture exploring Gibraltar’s Medieval History at the University of Gibraltar.

According to Arabic oral tradition, Gibraltar’s Medieval period begins when Tariq ibn Ziad’s army lands in Gibraltar in AD711, possibly on today’s ‘Eastern Beach’ during the Moorish conquest of the ex-Roman province of Hispania.

In 1068 the Moorish Kingdom’s ruler ordered his Governor to “build a fort on Gibraltar” in anticipation of an invasion.

Over the next four centuries the Rock was besieged and captured many times changing hands between Christian and Moorish forces until finally it fell to the Castilians in 1462 at the end of Gibraltar’s

Medieval period. Throughout this time the Castle and its defences were refortified and expanded in a process that was to continue for centuries after.

“Most people would be forgiven for thinking that the Tower of Homage is the Moorish Castle, but it is only part of it. The tower was in fact the final line of defence.”

The Moorish Castle was made up of four strategic segments. Dr. Finlayson gestures to point ‘D’ of the diagram shown on this page, “the ‘Dar al Sinaha’, which I think suggests the origin of the word ‘Barcina’, as it was also called, was the Port with a ‘Galley House’. This is now Casemates Square, which once met the shoreline.”

While excavating Casemates, Dr. Finlayson’s team uncovered the Galley House that sat along the southern wall;

“there was evidence of the building having been built partly on land and partly on water […] when we reached the lowest levels, the tide used to come in; part of the time we were working with our feet in very damp mud.” Today the remains are surrounded by Casemates’ busy restaurants and bars.

“The fortress was built to become increasingly defensive as enemies moved in towards the Tower of Homage. If the Rock was being attacked, soldiers would withdraw into the inner recesses of the castle.”

“To get to the Keep, you would have to push past the fortress’ defences and the huge palace walls of the ‘Qasbah’ and make your way through a tiny little arched entrance which can still be seen today.

You could enter on horseback, and you would need to proceed in single file…

If you overcame all this, you are then faced with the Tower of Homage; heavily defended and raining down all manner of projectiles.”

Deep inside the Tower, Dr. Finlayson and her team uncovered a wall which still holds a missile from a catapult, providing evidence that this was the exterior wall of the original tower that was later rebuilt in the 14th Century by the ‘Marinid Dynasty’.

“When the Marinids built the tower around it, they had left in place everything that had been thrown at it […] very likely there are other similar structures inside Gibraltar’s walls.”

This part of Gibraltar’s history is still there for anyone who knows where to look.

The Gibraltar University will be hosting lectures on Gibraltar history every Friday at 10 AM until the 30th of November

La dra. Finlayson reveló este fascinante fragmento de la historia del Peñón durante su reciente y concurrida conferencia sobre Historia Medieval en la Universidad de Gibraltar.

Según la tradición oral árabe, la época medieval de Gibraltar comienza cuando el ejército de Tariq ibn Ziad llega a Gibraltar en el año 711 d.C., posiblemente en la actualmente conocida como ‘Playa de Levante’, durante la conquista árabe de la antigua provincia romana de Hispania.

En 1068, el dirigente del Reino Musulmán ordenó a su Gobernador que construyera “un fuerte en Gibraltar” con vistas a una posible invasión.

Durante los siguientes cuatro siglos, el Peñón fue asediado y conquistado en numerosas ocasiones, bajo el dominio cambiante de fuerzas cristianas y musulmanas, hasta que finalmente fue conquistado por los castellanos en el año 1462, a finales de la época medieval de Gibraltar. A lo largo de este período, el castillo y sus defensas se reforzaron y expandieron en un proceso que continuaría durante siglos.

“Es lógico que la mayoría de personas crean que la Torre del Homenaje constituye la totalidad del castillo, pero es solo una parte de él. De hecho, la torre era la última línea de defensa del mismo”.

El castillo estaba formado por cuatro

segmentos estratégicos. La dra. Finlayson señala el punto ‘D’ del diagrama, “El ‘Dar al Sinaha’, el cual creo que proviene de la palabra ‘Barcina’ como también se le llamaba y que hace referencia al Puerto que tenía un ‘Astillero para las galeras’.

Esto es lo que hoy en día se conoce como la plaza de Casemates (Casemates Square), que en su tiempo lindaba con el mar”.

Durante las recientes excavaciones realizadas en Casemates, el equipo de la dra. Finlayson descubrió los restos del

‘Astillero para las galeras’ que se asentaba a lo largo del muro sur; “Hay indicios de que la edificación se asentaba en parte en tierra y en parte en el agua [...] cuando llegábamos a los niveles más bajos, solía entrar la marea; de hecho, parte del tiempo tuvimos que trabajar con los pies metidos en el barro”.

En la actualidad, los restos se encuentran rodeados de los concurridos restaurantes y bares de Casemates.

“La fortaleza se construyó de forma que

cada vez fuera más defensiva conforme los enemigos avanzaban hacia la Torre del Homenaje. En un posible ataque al Peñón, los soldados se retirarían hacia los recovecos internos del castillo”.

“Para llegar a la Torre había que ir más allá de las defensas de la fortaleza y los enormes muros del palacio del ‘Qasbah’ así como atravesar una pequeña entrada arqueada que todavía hoy se mantiene en su lugar.

No se podía entrar a caballo y había que entrar en fila india. Si se conseguía superar todo esto, había que enfrentarse entonces a la Torre del Homenaje bajo una lluvia defensiva de proyectiles”.

La dra. Finlayson y su equipo descubrieron en la parte más interna de la torre un muro que todavía contiene un misil de una catapulta, lo cual demostraría que podría tratarse del muro exterior de la torre original que luego fue reconstruida en el siglo XIV por la dinastía de los Meriníes “Cuando los meriníes construyeron la torre a su alrededor, dejaron en su lugar todo lo que le habían lanzado [...] muy probablemente haya otras estructuras similares dentro de los muros de Gibraltar”.

Esta parte de la historia de Gibraltar sigue ahí para aquellos que sepan dónde buscar.

Las conferencias sobre la historia de Gibraltar tienen lugar en su Universidad todos los viernes a las 10 de la mañana hasta el 30 de noviembre.

Diálogo, diálogo y mas diálogo Dialogue followed by dialogue & then more dialogue La decisión del Reino Unido de abandonar la Unión Europea ha colocado a Gibraltar en una difícil situación, claramente no deseada.

Que eso influirá en las poblaciones vecinas, especialmente en La Línea, es evidente.

Esa Verja que nos separa, igualmente nos une. El Gobierno español es responsable de evitar efectos negativos del Brexit sobre nuestra comarca, en lo que seguro ya está trabajando. Por experiencia sé que en Madrid hay veces que nuestros problemas resultan insignificantes, por eso hay que ser tenaces en recordarlos. El caso es que existe un problema que ninguno hemos buscado, pero que puede agravar la ya de por sí compleja situación de las relaciones vecinales entre Gibraltar y su entorno, siempre condicionadas por la reclamación española sobre el territorio.

El nacimiento de este nuevo medio, en español y en inglés, demuestra el deseo de que exista fluidez de ideas a través de la Verja.

La solución que propongo es la que siempre he propugnado: dialogar, buscar el entendimiento. Estoy seguro que,

respetando las posiciones políticas de todos los implicados, se pueden encontrar intereses comunes y fórmulas que permitan superar unidos el problema y convertir el Brexit en una oportunidad.

Realmente creo que estamos ante un hecho histórico que debe suponer una ruptura en la dinámica de desencuentros y que puede constituir un punto de inflexión para trazar un nuevo orden en las cosas, más productivo para todos.

España y en particular, el Campo de Gibraltar, y más especialmente La Línea, tienen mucho que ofrecer a Gibraltar.

Mucho más que mano de obra para sus empresas y suministros básicos para el puerto o la construcción. España seguirá siendo miembro de la Unión Europea cuando Gibraltar salga con el Reino Unido.

Me ha alegrado saber que se ha llegado a un acuerdo para que esa salida se produzca de forma ordenada. Espero que ese consenso siente las bases para una relación futura y que seamos valientes y ambiciosos en nuestros planteamientos, superando una disputa impropia del S. XXI.

The United Kingdom’s decision to withdraw from the European Union has clearly put Gibraltar in a difficult position which it did not want.

It is obvious that Brexit will affect the neighbouring region and in particular the City of La Linea. Yet the frontier which separates us can also unite us. The Spanish government has a duty to ensure that the negative consequences of Brexit on the Campo de Gibraltar are avoided and no doubt it is already working to that end. From personal experience I know that there are times when our problems in this region seem insignificant to Madrid; that is why we have to vigorously persist in reminding them. The fact is that we face a problem that none of us asked for and which can aggravate the already complex relationship between Gibraltar and its hinterland in the backdrop of Spain’s claim over the territory of Gibraltar.

The birth of this newspaper in English and Spanish demonstrates a desire for the fluid exchange of ideas across the frontier.

My own solution is and has always been based on dialogue and the quest for

understanding. I am certain that we can find common interests and formulae not just to rise to the challenge but to turn Brexit into an opportunity even whilst respecting the political positions of all the affected parties.

I really do believe that we are at an historic juncture which can finally release us from the dynamic of misunderstanding and allow us to re-lay the ground for a new, more productive order of things for all.

Spain and the Campo de Gibraltar, particularly La Linea, have much more to offer Gibraltar than human resources and supplies for its Port and construction industry.

Spain will remain in the European Union when Gibraltar exits with the United Kingdom.

I have been heartened to learn that an agreement has been reached for an orderly Brexit in so far as Gibraltar is concerned. I hope that this meeting of minds will lay the foundations for our future relationship and that we will be courageous and ambitious in our approach so that we can finally overcome the consequences of a dispute which is out of place in the 21st century.

Blockchain - the future or the mother of all bubbles?

PETER SCHIMER Journalist /Periodista While the major economies worry about the Hydra-head growth of crypto-currencies – where, new token offerings fail and, others are launched and snapped up by gullible punters – their offspring blockchain or DLT (distributed ledger technology), are becoming a force in global finance.

Essentially a ‘disruptive’ system of accountancy dealing with ephemeral assets, blockchain developed to meet a need to bring order and control to the swathe of crypto-currencies which have been ‘mined’ (created by their promoters

but with a set limit to their numbers) or have emerged as ‘tokens’ from initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the ten years since the first Bitcoin was sold in October 2008.

DLT stores or transfers these non-existent assets and allows users to trace the movements of asset transactions.

There were calls in Europe, America and Asia for the new technology to be regulated.

And, while major nations argued whether or not DLT was ‘useful’ or threatening to global financial stability, the Gibraltar Government established a regulatory format for DLT companies as part of its thrust to make Gibraltar an international hub for FinTech and some crypto-related businesses.

The legislation passed in the Gibraltar Parliament on January 1 this year, and the first of a string of DLT companies received licenses this June. A steady stream of international applicants are

En Europa, América y Asia se ha solicitado la regulación de esta nueva tecnología mientras la mayoría de los estados debaten sobre la ‘utilidad’ o no de la DLT o su posible amenaza para la estabilidad del sistema económico global. El Gobierno de Gibraltar optó por la regulación de las empresas de DLT como parte de su iniciativa en convertir a Gibraltar en eje internacional de la Tecnología Financiera (FinTech) y de las actividades en materia de encriptación.

La ley se aprobó en el Parlamento de Gibraltar el 1 de enero de este año y en junio las primeras empresas de DLT recibieron sus permisos. Se está tramitando un flujo constante de solicitudes internacionales, un largo y extenso proceso, ya que se trata de un nuevo territorio por descubrir en el ciberespacio tanto por parte de los solicitantes como por la entidad reguladora.

Malta also has adopted both comprehensive blockchain and cryptocurrency regulations, which came into force this October.

But blockchain has its critics, and in the United States – though so far it has been unsuccessful in its search for ways to regulate Cyber-finance – an internationally respected economist recently told a Congressional hearing that ‘bitcoin and other crypto-currencies represent the mother of all bubbles’, and that blockchain ‘is the most over-hyped – and least useful – technology in human history.’

But where critics of crypto-currencies – some liken the current greed for a fast profit to the Dutch tulip fiasco of the 17th century – are still in the majority, blockchain is gaining support – even in conservative Britain where a taskforce set up by the Financial Conduct Authority, HM Treasury and the Bank of England acknowledged that blockchain ‘has the potential to deliver significant benefits in financial services and other sectors’.

Indeed, the UK Government has already spent more than £10 million for various distributed ledger projects.

Though the jury is still out on blockchain as the world’s financial panacea, there are pointers that, in embracing it, the Gibraltar Government made a wise move.

Mientras la mayoría de los sistemas financieros se preocupan sobre cómo las criptomonedas van creciendo cual Hidra de Lerna, con nuevas ofertas de tokens que fracasan e ingenuos consumidores que lanzan y se apoderan de otras, sus descendientes, el denominado “Blockchain” (Cadena de Bloques) o la conocida DLT Distributed Ledger Technology (Tecnología de Contabilidad Distribuida), van abriéndose paso en la economía global.

Básicamente, en un ‘perturbador’ sistema de contabilidad en el que se trata con bienes efímeros, el blockchain surge con el fin de solventar la necesidad de proporcionar cierto orden y control en el sector de las criptomonedas, las cuales, en los últimos 10 años desde que se vendió el primer Bitcoin en octubre del 2018, se han visto ‘explotadas’ (sus creadores las idearon en un número limitado) o han aparecido en forma de ‘tokens’ a raíz de las ofertas iniciales de moneda (ICOs, Initial Coin Offerings). La DLT almacena o transfiere estos activos no existentes y permite a los usuarios rastrear los movimientos de sus transacciones. (En un simposio que tuvo lugar recientemente en Gibraltar,

las criptomonedas que entró en vigor en Octubre.

Sin embargo, el blockchain también tiene sus detractores. En los Estados Unidos, a pesar de que hasta ahora no han tenido éxito en su búsqueda por la regulación del Ciberespacio, un respetado economista a nivel internacional comentó en una audiencia del Congreso que “el bitcoin y otras criptomonedas representan la madre de todas las burbujas” y que el blockchain es “la tecnología mas exagerada y menos útil de la historia de la humanidad”.

Aunque los detractores de las criptomonedas siguen constituyendo una mayoría y comparan la actual codicia por el beneficio rápido con el desastre de la crisis de los tulipanes del siglo XVII, el blockchain va ganando adeptos.

Incluso en la conservadora Gran Bretaña, donde este campo se regula a través del Financial Conduct Authority (entidad que regula la conducta de las empresas que prestan servicios financieros), del HM Treasury (departamento gubernamental en política fiscal y económica) y del Banco de Inglaterra, se ha reconocido que el blockchain “tiene el potencial de ofrecer beneficios significativos para los servicios

Abril es el mes, si no hay contingencia que lo impida, en el que se procederá a la inauguración del nuevo parque de bomberos de Tarifa, unas instalaciones dignas y dotadas de todos los elementos materiales necesarios para que la plantilla pueda ejercer su importante trabajo en el amplio término municipal que cubre además de Tarifa, las localidades de Facinas y Tahivilla y de 19 núcleos rurales más y que se traduce en una población de 18 mil personas pero que en temporada alta, los meses veraniegos, se puede triplicar fácilmente.

Con este ansiado traslado se pone fin a un largo periodo, desde 1985, en el que los bomberos han prestado sus servicios en unas malas condiciones que no se correspondían con la importancia de las tareas encomendadas.

Después de muchos vaivenes y de promesas e incumplimientos y de no pocas trabas de todo tipo, el gobierno local que preside Francisco Ruíz y el presidente del Consorcio, Francisco Vaca, acordaron dar los pasos definitivos para poner fin a este anacronismo y acordaron trasladar a los terrenos de La Marina, sobre una superficie de cinco mil metros cuadrados, aunque el edificio se asienta sobre dos mil metros, un nuevo parque que ya se

construye, a imagen y semejanza del de San Roque o Jimena, por un importe de 2.556.356 euros a cargo de Ferrovial.

Si se cumplen los plazos, fijados en 18 meses, en abril los bomberos harán el traslado a unas instalaciones modernas, con tres cocheras y dotado con cuatro vehículos: una autobomba urbana ligera, una autobomba rural pesada, un vehículo de salvamento ligero y otro de mando y apoyo logístico. Junto a ello nuevas dotaciones de materiales y la habilitación de un lugar adecuada para las 16 personas que conforman la plantilla.

Los técnicos del Consorcio adscritos al parque entienden que independientemente de las preferencias de cada cual, el nuevo parque tarifeño se encuentra ubicado en un magnífico emplazamiento, entre el casco urbano y una salida sin problemas a la carretera, al objeto de la siempre necesaria inmediatez en sus intervenciones.

El que sin duda es el proyecto estrella del mandato del Consorcio que preside Vaca, está a punto de concretarse en una realidad ya palpable. Un servicio moderno, atento con sus trabajadores y útil y muy necesario para sus potenciales usuarios que demanden el servicio.

La larga historia de una no menos extensa espera está pues a punto de terminar.

April next year is when, all things being equal, the municipality of Tarifa finally inaugurates its long awaited new fire station. The modern facility will be fully equipped to allow the crews to deal with emergencies within their large area of responsibility. The local authority covers not just the City of Tarifa but also Facinas, Tahivilla and 19 other rural centres with a total permanent population of some 18,000 and three times that number in the summer months.

With this development ends a long wait which started in 1985 and during which fire fighters have had to carry out their crucially important work in conditions which have often fallen well short of the magnitude of the tasks entrusted to them.

After many ups and downs, broken promises and every kind of obstacle the local government presided by Francisco Ruíz and the president of the Fire Services

Consortium, Francisco Vaca, have taken the final strides to end this anachronism.

5,000 square metres of land in the La Marina area were allocated to the fire brigade. Of this some 2,000 square metres are designated for the station’s buildings.

The design is similar to that of the fire stations of San Roque and Jimena. The construction was awarded to Ferrovial at a cost of €2,556,356 with a completion time of 18 months ending in April 2019.

The fleet will consist of 3 bays, four fire engines, a light urban pump, a heavier rural pump, a light rescue truck and a logistical support vehicle . In addition to other modern equipment there will be accommodation for crews of up to 16 firefighters.

The technicians at the Consortium assigned to the fire station acknowledge that regardless of individual preferences the facilities are located in an optimum

location, near the main town area and with a clear exit to the road, to allow for rapid reaction.

This is undoubtedly the highlight of the Fire Services Consortium under Francisco

Vaca’s mandate. A new facility to cater for the needs and expectations of the population of the Tarifa area in general and the fire fighters in particular. The long wait is now nearly over.

El Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales está formado por la masa forestal de alcornoques más extensa de Europa, presentando gran diversidad de relieves y paisajes. Esta riqueza se refleja en todos los ámbitos: flora, fauna, climatología…, constituyendo un lugar ideal para visitar y disfrutar de actividades tan diversas como la recolección de setas y la práctica de deportes en la naturaleza.

Debido a las peculiares características climáticas del Estrecho de Gibraltar se mantiene en las zonas de montaña una elevada humedad ambiental y precipitación con ombrotipo húmedo a hiperhúmedo en algunas zonas.

Las sierras están pobladas por alcornoques y quejigos, con espeso sotobosque. Es una zona todavía libre de la degradación que puede producir la ocupación humana.

El desarrollo del reino Fungi requiere materia orgánica y humedad para todo su ciclo vital. Aquí, en pleno clima mediterráneo, va a disponer de abundante alimento y de humedad suficiente en la época lluviosa. Sin embargo durante los meses del verano la sequía es casi absoluta en esta zona y en esas condiciones ningún hongo superior esporula, lo que implica que no podamos disfrutar en el campo de ellos entre los meses de junio y septiembre, al contrario que ocurre en la España atlántica y en nuestros vecinos europeos. Como contrapartida, dispondremos, si llegan las propicias y frecuentes lluvias otoñales e invernales, de abundantes y variadas cosechas en los meses restantes.

Luis Sánchez Tundidor nos comenta: los diferentes suelos que nos encontramos tanto en el Campo de Gibraltar, como en los parques y parajes naturales de su entorno, son muy diversos y complejos.

Las cumbres rocosas tanto de areniscas como de calizas tienen leptosoles, que son muy pobres en todo tipo de hongos, pero que pueden sorprendernos, por ejemplo, con el Myriostoma coliforme. Las calizas y los pastizales más xéricos desarrollan los calcisoles, como en la Sª de la Cabras, donde no faltan los pedos de lobo y variados Coprinus. En zonas llanas con abundantes calcarenitas como El Pinar del Rey, se desarrollan los kastanozems, que son tan ricos en Lactarius, Xerocomus, Amanita, Macrolepiota y otros muchos.

Andando por las zonas altas del Pico Aljibe y de la Cruz del Romero, en los terrenos poco consolidados veremos regosoles, en

Estas son algunas de las recomendaciones de la Confederación de Organizaciones de Selvicultores de España (COSE) para ser un buen recolector de setas: • Ve al monte siempre acompañado y bien equipado (mapa, GPS, guía micológica, ropa y calzado adecuados) para evitar posibles percances.

• Recolecta solo aquellas setas que sepas que son comestibles, pero respeta las variedades tóxicas: todas ejercen su función en el bosque.

• Respeta las setas muy jóvenes; recolecta sólo los ejemplares maduros.

• Aquellos ejemplares que hayas cortado pero decidas no llevarte, déjalos con el sombrero en su posición normal para que suelten las esporas.

• No pises las zonas donde hay setas, la compactación del terreno afecta negativamente a su fructificación • No recolectes setas en zonas contaminadas, zonas industriales o bordes de carreteras, pueden contener metales pesados.

• Cuando recolectes la seta, tapa el agujero originado, así protegerá al micelio y volverá a crecer en la próxima estación.

• Si tienes la más mínima duda sobre su identificación o toxicidad, no consumir jamás.

los que pueden aparecer alguna Peziza, Otidea, Phallus, Cortinarius, etc. En las laderas medias de todo el P. N. de Los Alcornocales, se intercalan unidades mezcladas de cambisoles, luvisoles y alisoles de forma abundantísima, dado que dominan en los suelos ácidos donde reinan los alcornoques, los madroños y los brezales, que tan buenas cosechas de Yemas, Crespas, Boletos, Rúsulas, Trompetas, y otras muchas variantes fúngicas nos proporcionan. A la vera de estas rocas cuarcíferas no faltan nunca las arcillas asociadas por los flyschs, y que tienen clara preferencia por los vertisoles, en los que encontraremos champiñones, Xylarias, Entolomas, setas de cardo y Collybias, entre otras muchas.

En los terrenos con aportes de sedimentos recientes y agua abundante, como barrancos, hoces y canutos, se dan los greyzems, con un amplio abanico de Órdenes, Familias y Géneros, como Hygrocybe, Tricholoma, Entoloma, Lactarius, así como variopintas especies, el clatro rojo, la Calocera cornea, Dichomitus campestris, Pulcherricium caeruleum, etc… Finalmente, en los quejigales hiperhúmedos, podemos estudiar los phaeozems gleicos, que guardan abundantes especies emblemáticas como la Chantarela, la Amanita phalloides o el Boletus aereus, entre otros.

Los Alcornocales Natural Park is the largest cork oak tree forest in Europe. Its diverse topography and landscapes are home to a wealth of flora and fauna which, combined with the local climate offer an ideal place to visit and enjoy outdoor activities of which mushroom picking is popular.

In the

mountainous areas, the high levels of precipitation and humidity generated by the climatology of the Straits of Gibraltar produce abundant cloud-fed (“ombrotrophic”) soil and vegetation.

Here the mountains are populated by cork oaks and gall oaks, and a thick undergrowth. The area is still free from the degradation that human activity can produce.

The proliferation of the Kingdom of the Mushroom requires organic matter and humidity throughout is life cycle. Here, in the heart of the Mediterranean climate, nourishment is plentiful, and humidity sufficient during the rainy season. However, in the summer months the drought is almost absolute in this area and in those conditions no superior fungus can produce spores; so, unlike the Atlantic part of Spain and elsewhere in neighbouring Europe, you will not find them here between the months of June and

Here are some recommendations from the Confederation of Spanish Forestry Organisations (CSFO) on how to be a good mushroom picker: • Always go accompanied when visiting the mountainside; to avoid any mishaps well equipped (map, GPS, mycological guide, suitable clothing and footwear).

• Collect only those mushrooms that you are sure are edible, but be aware of the toxic varieties: all of which can be found in the forest..

• Do not pick young mushrooms; collect only mature specimens.

• Leave those specimens that you have picked cut but decide not to take away, upright on the ground to allow them to release their spores.

• Do not step on areas where the mushrooms grow; soil compaction impairs their growth • Do not collect mushrooms in contaminated areas, such as industrial areas or road sides as they may contain have metallic content.

• When you collect mushrooms, cover the holes, protect the mycelium and help them grow back next season.

Do not consume any mushroom unless you are sure that it is not poisonous.

The rocky peaks of hard sandstones and limestones are covered over with shallow soil called leptosols, which areless prone to supporting fungi, but there are surprising exceptions such as the Myriostoma coliforme, a fungus in the shape of a star. The more xeric or arid limestones and pastures develop accumulations of lime calcisol of the kind that can be found in La Señora de la Cabras, where puffballs (a type of fungus with no open cap or visible stalk) are plentiful and a wide range of Coprinus (a small genus of mushroom-forming fungi). In flat areas where calcarenites are common , such as in El Pinar del Rey, within the Alcornocales natural park, with there are abundant there grow calcarenites, kastazonems, which are rich in Lactarius (Milk-caps), Xerocomus (similar to Boletus), Amanita (a genus that includes some of the most toxic mushrooms), Macrolepiota (a parasol

mushroom) and many others. Walking through the high areas of Pico Aljibe or Cruz del Romero, you will come across regosols, (weak soils of unconsolidated materials) , in which can be found such fungi as Peziza, Otidea, Phallus, and Cortinarius.. On the middle slopes of Los Alcornocales Natural Park, there is a mixture different soils such as cambisols, luvisols and alisols acidic soils where the cork oaks, arbutus (Irish strawberry tree) and heather grow; these soils provide a good harvest of Amanita Caesarea (king´s egg or egg yolk), Ramaria aurea, Boletus eduli, Russula and Craterellus cinereus and many other fungal variants. At the edge of these quartzite rocks, there is never a shortage of the clays associated with the flysch (sedimentary rock layers), and which have a clear preference for vertisols (soil with high content of clay minerals), in which we will find fungi such as Xylaria, Entoloma, Pleorutus eryngii (known as thistle mushroom) and Collybia among many others. In soils with recent sediments and abundant water, such as in ravines and in gorges, greyzems (soils rich in calcium carbonate) are found, with a wide range of scientific classifications of mushrooms such as Hygrocybe, Tricholoma, Entoloma, Lactarius, as well as varied species like Clathus ruber, Calocera cornea, Dichomitus campestris, and Pulcherricium caeruleum. Finally, in the hyper-humid gall oak groves, you will come can study the a type of soil called phaeozems, which supports such emblematic species as Chantarela, Amanita phalloides or Boletus aereus, among others.

The Isla de las Palomas (Island of the Pigeons) is surrounded by a perennial halo of mystery, an extreme scenery, where all the forces of nature seem to collide to occupy an unusual, almost mythical scenery. This area, in the southernmost tip of Europe combines the highest levels of excellence in terms of its environmental wealth, heritage and geostrategic position.

The Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve is the jewel in the crown of the Straits of Gibraltar Natural Park. Its marine wealth boasts unique species and it is visited all year round by scientists and students from all over the world. It is also a privileged vantage point from which to observe the passage of birds in their migration to and from the Old Continent.

The Island, could well have been used as the atmospheric setting for an eerie film depicting the desolation of the ruins of the old barracks, the rocky, rugged shores, its strong tides and the screeching of the thousands of seagulls that regularly break the silence. In this unique place, there crowd together many historical vestiges: Phoenician tombs, the docks, an Arabic cistern, the ancient beacon, artillery stores, the barracks or the necropolis.

Throughout 2019, the Island’s assets will be displayed to visitors at a centre set up in the Lighthouse and the adjoining facilities, which belong to the Port Authority of Algeciras According to project managers, “Atlántida” the works will cost the Port Authority some €186,000.

The Lighthouse which was built in the second half of the eighteenth century, measures 33 metres in height and is located 48.3 metres above sea level. Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental, es la joya de la corona del Parque Natural del Estrecho. De una riqueza marina que presume de especies únicas y que es visitada durante todo el año por científicos y alumnos de todo el planeta, por no olvidar que es una privilegiada atalaya desde donde observar el paso de las aves en su vuelo de ida y de regreso al viejo continente En la Isla bien podría representarse una película extrema donde a la desolación de los restos del viejo acuartelamiento, de sus orillas rocosas y afiladas, de sus fuertes mareas, del graznido de las miles de gaviotas que rompen el silencio cuajado de memoria de este lugar único, se agolpan los vestigios históricos, como las tumbas fenicias, la dársena, el aljibe árabe, la antigua torre almenara, los almacenes de artillería, el cuartel o la necrópolis. Y a ello, se espera que, a lo

largo de 2019 se inaugure un Centro de Interpretación de la Isla que se habilita en el Faro y las instalaciones aledañas propiedad de la Autoridad Portuaria de la Bahía de Algeciras, que costeará las obras de adecuación por 186.000 euros, según reza en el anteproyecto redactado por la empresa Atlántida.

El Faro fue construido en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, mide 33 metros de altura y se sitúa a 48,3 metros del nivel del mar, Hasta principios del siglo XIX (1808) la Isla y Tarifa se hallaban separadas y fue en esa fecha cuando Antonio González Salmón, responsable del espigón de San Felipe, construye el dique que los une en la actualidad.

El alcalde, Francisco Ruiz, quiere paso a paso recuperar el uso público de la Isla. Los permisos para visitar las riquezas del lugar, ahora con el Centro de Interpretación, deberán realizarse con una solicitud previa que probablemente se cederá a una empresa privada, que, a la vez, dispondrá de los pases, horarios y los guías para disfrutar de este lugar único.

Esta isla del fin del mundo, a poco que se gestione con orden e inteligencia, puede convertirse en breve en uno de los espacios más visitados de Andalucía.

El centro Los visitantes podrán contemplar en el Faro y su edificio anexo todos los aspectos relacionados con la Isla. Su historia, su patrimonio cultural y su riqueza marina. Además el anteproyecto contempla convertir el lugar en un centro de información turística, un lugar de desarrollo de educación ambiental y espacio para exposiciones, jornadas y actividades similares.

El CIE El Ministerio del Interior mantiene abierto en un extremo de la Isla el Centro de Internamiento de Extranjeros (CIE), por lo que las visitas organizadas al lugar serán restringidas mientras las autoridades no encuentren un lugar más adecuado para atender a los inmigrantes. Sea como fuere las peticiones del cierre de estas instalaciones son constantes.

Licenses are being put out to tender and are likely to be awarded to companies in the private sector which will be able to issue passes, schedules and guides for everyone to enjoy this unique place.

With careful planning and organization this ‘island at the end of the world, could become one of the most visited areas in Andalusia.

The centre

Visitors will be shown all that the Island has to offer by way of history, cultural heritage and marine wealth in the Lighthouse and annex where there will also be a tourist information centre and halls for exhibitions, conferences and similar activities.

The CIE

The ministry of the Interior runs a Centro de Internamiento de Extranjeros (Immigration Detention Centre) at one end of the Island, so organised visits will be restricted until the authorities find a more suitable location to attend to the immigrants. Requests for its closure are constant.

La independencia ha llegado a San Martín del Tesorillo. No es una cuestión de bandera ni un capricho, es una aspiración de quienes llevan casi veinte años peleando para convertirse en municipio por méritos propios. Y lo han conseguido.

Esta bella localidad ha logrado por fin segregarse de Jimena de la Frontera y pasa a ser el octavo municipio del Campo de Gibraltar, el número 45 de Cádiz y el 786 de Andalucía. La Junta de Andalucía aprobó el 2 de octubre la creación de ocho nuevos municipios. En Cádiz, San Martín del Tesorillo ha sido la población beneficiada por esta decisión, por lo que dejará de ser Entidad Local Autónoma (ELA) y depender de Jimena de la Frontera.

Sus habitantes, 2.662 según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística, no caben en sí de gozo. Y es que sienten que nada tienen que ver con el que hasta ahora ha sido su municipio matriz.

Tras el acto de inauguración del alumbrado, las luces se encenderán todos los días automáticamente hasta el 6 de enero.

Los tesorilleros son gente amable y sencilla que no se ven identificados con el entorno rural de Jimena de la Frontera, de la que están separados por una carretera sinuosa de 23,8 kilómetros de longitud. “No es que seamos ni mejores ni peores, somos diferentes. Dependemos de la agricultura y del sector servicios que se mueve en Sotogrande y la Costa del Sol. Jimena se nutre de su ámbito rural. No tenemos mucho que ver”, explica el presidente de la ELA, Jesús Fernández.

Además de sentirse diferentes, creen que la segregación les reportará importantes beneficios. Y es que su sensación es que no han sido bien tratados por el municipio matriz. “Todo el dinero se queda en Jimena”, es el comentario más frecuente entre los tesorilleros.

Gestionar sus propios fondos para realizar mejoras en su localidad y disponer de una

Policía Local propia han tenido mucho peso en esta lucha. El presidente de la ELA afronta esta nueva realidad como un reto. Ahora se debe constituir una gestora hasta el próximo mes de mayo, cuando se celebrarán elecciones municipales.

Ya no habrá una urna para elegir a los representantes de Jimena y otra para la presidencia de la ELA. El próximo 26 de mayo, los 14.000 electores de San Martín del Tesorillo elegirán a sus propios representantes municipales y harán historia. De hecho, se pasará de los cinco cargos políticos que tiene ahora la ELA a una Corporación municipal de 14 miembros.

La segregación supondrá además disponer de un presupuesto propio y no del que viene aportando hasta ahora el ayuntamiento matriz, cifrado en 550.000 euros anuales. Jesús Fernández estima que

la independencia permitirá a San Martín del Tesorillo contar con un presupuesto anual de 1,4 millones de euros, casi el triple.

Mientras ese momento llega, los tesorilleros disfrutan de la mágica sensación de haber logrado un sueño para poder ser dueños de su propio destino como municipio.

Independence has come to San Martin del Tesorillo. It is not a question of waving a flag or a whim, it is an aspiration of those who have been fighting for almost twenty years to become a municipality on their own merits, and now they have done it at last.

This beautiful town has finally managed to separate from Jimena de La Frontera and becomes the eighth municipality of the Campo de Gibraltar, the number 45 in Cadiz and 786th in Andalusia. On 2nd October 2018 the Regional Government of Andalusia approved the creation of eight new municipalities. In Cadiz, San Martin del Tesorillo and its population have benefited by this decision, so it will cease to be an Autonomous Local Entity (ALE) and will no longer depend on Jimena del La Frontera.

Its inhabitants, all 2,662 according to the National Institute of Statistics, feel over the moon as they have nothing in common with the parent municipality.

The “Tesorilleros” (people from San Martín del Tesorillo) are friendly and outgoing people who do not identify themselves with the Rural Environment of Jimena de La Frontera, from which they are separated by a winding 23.8 kilometre road. “It´s not that we are better or worse, we´re different. We depend on some agricultural lands and also the service sector of Sotogrande and Costa de Sol. Jimena lives off its rural environment, which we don´t have that much to do with”, explains Autonomous Local Entity (ALE), President Jesus Fernandez.

In addition to feeling different, they believe segregation will bring them important

financial benefits, and the feeling is that they have been treated unfairly by their parent municipality. The most frequent comment heard among the “Tesorilleros” is “all of the money stays in Jimena”.

Being able to manage their own budget in order to make improvements within their municipality and having their own Local Police Service have had a lot of weight in this long fight. The Autonomous Local Entity (ALE) president faces this new challenge in all of its reality. A temporary committee must now be set up, until next May, when municipal elections will be held.

There will no longer be a ballot box to elect Jimena representatives and another for the Autonomous Local Entity (ALE) presidency. On 26th May the 14,000 voters of San Martin de Tesorillo will

make history by electing their very own municipal representatives, in fact it will change from the 5 political posts of the Autonomous Local Entity (ALE) to a 14-member Municipal Committee.

The segregation will mean that they can implement their own budget and will not have to follow the parent municipality one, which it has provided until now, 550,000 Euros per year. Jesus Fernandez estimates that with the independence, the forecasted budget for San Martin de Tesorillo will almost triple to 1.4 million Euros.

While waiting for that moment to arrive, the “Tesorilleros” enjoy the magical sensation of having achieved their dream, now they are able to make their own destiny as a municipality.

Lee ‘The Rowing Marine’ Spencer will be setting sail from Ocean Village, Gibraltar on the 12th of December on a non-stop, and unsupported voyage that will take him a gruelling 3,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, where he hopes to arrive in French Guiana in no more than 60-70 days – beating the solo world record set by Stein Hoff in 2002.

Lee served 24 years in the Royal Marines, serving three 6-month tours of Afghanistan and becoming Section Commander in ‘Charlie Company 40 Commando’ during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. He came home unscathed, but an act of heroism led to tragedy in 2014 when a car crashed on the M3 motorway: “I pulled over and was helping the people who had crashed when another car crashed into theirs and I was hit by the engine; severing my right leg from below the knee. Luckily, a Rastafarian called Frank turned up, and with his help I directed him to apply a tourniquet while

his daughter stood on my groin to stop the flow of blood – they saved my life.” Lee told us.

Now, Lee has his sights on breaking two records in 2019. Equipped with a prosthetic leg (plus a spare) and sheer determination, he is preparing to become the first physically disabled person to row solo across the Atlantic from Gibraltar to French Guiana – hoping to beat the ablebodied record set in 2002 as well as set his own.

His purpose-built rowing boat proudly carries the quote “not defined by disability”, and this is the inspirational message that Lee wants to get out to anyone struggling with a disability: “One day I’m running a 52 mile marathon, and 6

months later I find myself a disabled person; I thought that the person I was the night before, a person who defined themselves by physicality, was gone” Lee explains, “I thought I had to redefine who I was, it was only until I rowed across the Atlantic in 2016 that I realised I was the same person. That’s why I’m passionate about this, no one should be defined by their disability whatever it may be.”

In 2016 Lee was part of the ‘Row-toRecovery’ team of four injured veterans who became the first British, all-amputee team, with just three legs between them, to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic.

During their recordbreaking row the team was confronted by Hurricane Alex and 40-foot waves, a

‘freak hurricane’ that was the first to hit the Atlantic in 78 years. Lee’s 2016 row has helped him mentally and physically prepare for this newest challenge, but as Lee told us: “I’ve got everything I could possibly need to take on this challenge, I haven’t scrimped on any equipment because I want to give myself the best possible chance of succeeding, but as you know – the Atlantic Ocean will have the last word.”

Interestingly, Lee says that he thinks that the most arduous part of the journey will be departing the Mediterranean because of the strong current entering from the Atlantic Ocean.

Lee sirvió 24 años en la Infantería de Marina británica (Royal Marines) y estuvo destinado en tres periodos de seis meses cada uno en Afganistán convirtiéndose en

comandante de sección en el ‘Comando de la Compañía 40 de Charlie’ durante la invasión inicial a Irak en el año 2003. Volvió a casa ileso, pero un acto de heroísmo en el año 2014 finalizó trágicamente cuando un coche colisionó en la autopista M3.

“Me paré y me puse a ayudar a los heridos cuando otro automóvil chocó contra ellos y el motor me golpeó; cortando mi pierna derecha por debajo de la rodilla.

Afortunadamente, apareció un rastafari llamado Frank, y con su ayuda, le pedí que me hiciera un torniquete mientras su hija me presionaba la ingle para detener la

sangre; me salvaron la vida “, nos cuenta Lee. En la actualidad, Lee tiene la intención de batir dos récords en 2019. Equipado con una prótesis en la pierna (además de una de repuesto) y pura determinación, está entrenando para convertirse en el primer discapacitado físico en remar en solitario a través del Océano Atlántico desde Gibraltar hasta la Guayana Francesa, con la esperanza de superar el récord para personas sin discapacidad que se consiguió en el 2002 y batir el suyo propio.

Su bote de remo especialmente diseñado lleva con orgullo el emblema “no te define la discapacidad”, y es precisamente este mensaje inspirador el que Lee quiere transmitir a cualquier persona que esté luchando con una discapacidad.

“Un día estoy corriendo una maratón de 84 kilómetros y tan sólo 6 meses después me convierto en una persona con discapacidad. Pensé que la persona que había sido la noche anterior se había ido para siempre, una persona que se definía a sí misma por lo físico”, explica Lee.” Me di cuenta de que tenía que redefinir quién era yo y solo fue al cruzar el Atlántico en el 2016 cuando me di cuenta que era la misma persona. Por eso me apasiona esto, a nadie debe definirle su discapacidad, sea cual sea”.

En 2016, Lee formó parte del equipo “Remar para la Recuperación” compuesto por cuatro veteranos. Se convirtieron en el primer equipo británico formado por personas que habían sufrido amputaciones, en navegar unos 4.800 kilómetros a través del Atlántico, entre todos ellos contaban con tres piernas.

Durante su lucha por batir el récord, el equipo tuvo que enfrentarse al huracán Alex y a olas de 12 metros de altura, un “fenómeno meteorológico” que fue el

primero en sacudir el Atlántico en 78 años.

El viaje a remo de 2016 ha influido en Lee para prepararse mental y físicamente para este nuevo desafío, tal y como Lee nos comenta: “Tengo todo lo que pueda necesitar para enfrentarme a este desafío, no he escatimado en equipamiento porque quiero darme la mejor oportunidad posible para tener éxito, pero como sabréis, el Océano

Atlántico tendrá la última palabra.”

Curiosamente, Lee cree que la parte más dura del viaje será al salir del Mediterráneo debido a la fuerte corriente que entra desde el Océano Atlántico.

Así lo anunció en septiembre el director de esta institución, Luis García Montero, quien elogió los resultados en el Peñón y reconoció que con el Brexit “interesa mucho, diplomática y culturalmente, tener un punto de referencia en Gibraltar”.

Y, efectivamente, los resultados del Instituto Cervantes durante sus cuatro años de funcionamiento en Gibraltar fueron destacables y se convirtió en un referente cultural para muchos gibraltareños.

El Instituto Cervantes cosechó éxitos en lo académico y lo cultural, y se ganó el cariño y el reconocimiento de los gibraltareños, en principio reacios a su existencia. En ello tuvo una importancia capital el perfil estrictamente profesional y el empeño por aislar la institución de todo lo que rodea al contencioso.

Las cifras hablan por sí solas. Alcanzó las 4.500 matrículas, todo un récord para un centro de reciente implantación asentado sobre un territorio de cinco kilómetros cuadrados y con una población de derecho que ronda los 30.000 habitantes. La población infantil y juvenil de Gibraltar llegó a acaparar más del 60% de su alumnado.

Por estas instalaciones pasaron intelectuales de primer nivel. Hubo conferencias, ciclos de cine, un club de la zarzuela que levantó pasiones, otro de literatura.... En definitiva, se profundizó en la historia común y compartida.

Recuperar la competitividad bilingüe Sentadas aquellas bases, la reapertura del Instituto Cervantes en Gibraltar ha generado magníficas sensaciones. Y es que podría impulsar numerosos programas de intercambio educativos que resultarían muy beneficiosos para que los gibraltareños mantengan su competitividad bilingüe.

El español lleva años desapareciendo como lengua vehicular entre los gibraltareños.

Según el propio Instituto Cervantes, en Gibraltar se distinguen tres grupos de edades con un perfil lingüístico muy definido. Por una parte, existe un grupo extenso de personas de más de 50 años que en español con fluidez. Hay otro grupo, de entre 20 y 50 años, con un perfil reducido

Apertura El Instituto Cervantes abrió sus puertas en Gibraltar el 4 de abril de 2011 fruto de los Acuerdos de Córdoba suscritos por el Gobierno de José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero con el Reino Unido y Gibraltar a través del Foro Tripartito de Diálogo.

Market Lane El empresario gibraltareño James Gaggero ofreció un local de 350 metros cuadrados de su propiedad en la segunda planta de número 10 de Market Lane, que finalmente fue la sede del centro. La cesión en uso se estableció por un período inicial de cinco años con un coste anual simbólico de cinco libras.

The Spanish government intends to reopen a branch of the Instituto Cervantes in Gibraltar. This was announced in September by the director of the Institute, Luis García Montero, who praised the results which it had previously achieved on the Rock and suggested that with Brexit “it would be very interesting from , diplomatic and cultural perspectives, to have a point of reference in Gibraltar”.

Iindeed, during its four years of operation in Gibraltar the Instituto achieved remarkable standing and became a point of

cultural reference for many Gibraltarians.

The Instituto was successful academically and culturally, and won the affection and recognition of Gibraltarians, many of whom were initially unsure as to its aims. In order to achieve a sense of trust, the organization worked on a strictly professional basis, studiously avoiding any contentious matters.

The numbers speak for themselves. A total of 4,500 people registered for its courses, which must surely be a record for a new centre located on a territory of five square

kilometres and with a population of just over 30,000.. Gibraltar´s children and young people accounted for more than 60% of its student body.

Recovering Bilingualism It is on the foundations laid down in the period up to 2015 that, the reopening of the Instituto has generated very positive expectations. The hope is that it will promote educational exchange programmes which would benefit bilingualism in Gibraltar, where the Spanish languaje has been in decline for many years.

According to the Instituto itself, there are three different age groups in Gibraltar with a very distinct linguistic profiles.

On the one hand, there is a large group of people over 50 years old who are fluent in Spanish. Those between 20 and 50, with a limited bilingual profile, and the last group of children and young people, who are monolingual in English and show little or no interest in communicating in Spanish.

It is in this field that the Instituto can provide that ability which so many Spaniards aspire to and Gibraltarians used to master, which is bilingualism.

Con “los pies en la tierra y la mirada en el cielo”… Así es como se ha sentido muchas veces, a la hora de afrontar su vida y su obra, la pintora algecireña Blanca Orozco, cuya obra ‘Pedes in terra ad sidera visus’ permanece expuesta desde el pasado mes de julio en el conjunto arqueológico de Baelo Claudia, en cuyas paredes habitará hasta el próximo 30 de diciembre.

Orozco no se imagina haciendo otra cosa que no sea pintando, y así lo demuestra su extenso currículum, con exposiciones en las Ferias de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga y Madrid, la galería de Nando Argüelles en Sotogrande, la Galería Manolo Alés de La Línea, el Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno en Tarifa, la Fundación José Luis Cano y AlCultura, en Algeciras...

Además, parte de su prolífica obra ha podido ser disfrutada también en museos como el de Azuaga (Badajoz), Marmolejo (Córdoba), y el de Arte Contemporáneo de Sofía (Bulgaria).

“Yo siempre digo que nací pintora, porque pinto desde pequeña, desde que me alcanza la memoria… De hecho, no tengo recuerdos míos sin pintar, y tampoco es algo que yo decidiera de manera racional, sino que es algo que fluyó en mí de forma natural, como si hubiera nacido conmigo…”.

Así, como algo natural, y no como un planteamiento, surgió la idea, primero, de que sus padres la inscribieran, a muy temprana edad, en una academia, y luego, años más tarde, de estudiar Bellas Artes en la Universidad. De la época universitaria guarda buenos recuerdos, pero tampoco cree que aquello marcara un antes y un después en su trayectoria artística, como

tampoco lo hizo su estancia en Berlín, a pesar de todo lo que se enriqueció y nutrió de ella. “En realidad, hasta que no te enfrentas a tu primera exposición y al reto que supone intentar ganarte la vida con la pintura no te das cuenta de que tienes que encontrar tu propio lenguaje, tu propio camino... Ahí, en ese salir al mundo con tu obra, en ese intentar que poco a poco se te vaya conociendo, es cuando empieza lo difícil”.

Orozco, afincada desde hace años en Tarifa,

“Yo siempre digo que nací pintora, porque pinto desde pequeña, desde que me alcanza la memoria” donde tiene su estudio-taller, recuerda con cariño que una de sus primeras exposiciones fue en Algeciras, en la sala Cajasur, en un mano a mano artístico con su amiga Fátima Conesa. “Fue la exposición con más volumen de obras de cuantas había hecho hasta entonces, y fue también la primera vez que un cuadro mío se vendía… Y en ese momento aprendes que eso genera en tí una sensación contradictoria: por un lado, la alegría y la satisfacción de que alguien quiera comprar algo tuyo, pero, por otro, esa especie de vacío que supone dejar ir algo que has creado tú… Es muy bonito que alguien valore una obra tuya, y la elija, y quiera pagar por ella, pero, al mismo tiempo, es raro desprenderse de algo tan personal, tan íntimo, y ahí hay un aprendizaje… hasta que te acostumbras”.

Blanca Orozco también se siente docente; no en vano, también lleva ya diez años enseñando a otros a pintar… aunque, según reconoce, a su manera. “Me encanta enseñar, pero con mucha libertad, y no concibo mis talleres sino como un espacio para la expresión y la creatividad…

Siempre tiene que haber una base y una técnica, claro, pero el concepto de academia clásica no va conmigo”.

“Feet on the ground and eyes on the sky” …This is how the painter Blanca Orozco, often feels about her life and her work.

Her latest exhibition ‘Pedes in terra ad sidera visus’ opened last July in the archaeological complex of Baelo Claudia and remains open until 30th December.

Orozco cannot think of doing anything other than paint, and her extensive portfolio has been exhibited in such places as , the Contemporary Art Fairs of in Málaga and Madrid, Nando Argüelles’ Gallery in Sotogrande, Manolo Alés’ Gallery in La Línea, the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno in Tarifa, the José Luis Cano Foundation and Alcultura in Algeciras…

In addition, some of her many paintings have also been enjoyed in the museums for Contemporary Art in Azuaga (Badajoz), Marmolejo (Córdoba) and the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

“I always say that I was born a painter because I´ve been painting since I was a child, for as long as I can remember… In fact, I have no memories of myself when I wasn’t painting, and it´s not something

that I decided in a rational way, but it´s something that flowed naturally through me, as if it had been born with me…”

Thus, at a very early age and as a natural progression rather than by design her parents came up with the idea of enrolling her in an academy and then, years later, she studied oFine Arts at University. She has good memories of university life but does not believe that this marked a before and after in her artistic career. Neither does she think that of her stay in Berlin, although she did of course find all those experiences nurturing and enriching. “Actually, until you face your first exhibition and the challenge of trying to make a living by painting, you don´t realise that you have to find your own language, your own path…

It is in taking your work out into the world in that seeking recognition little by little, that the challenge begins”.

For some years now Orozco has been living in Tarifa where she has her studio.

She fondly remembers that one of her first exhibitions was a joint venture with her friend Fátima Conesa in the Cajasur exhibition room in Algeciras.“It was

the largest exhibition of my works to that date and the first in which I sold a painting.…At that moment you learn the contradictory feelings that that generates.

On the one hand, the joy and satisfaction of someone wanting to buy something of yours, but on the other hand, a kind of emptiness of letting go of something that you have created… It´s very nice that someone values a piece of work of yours, and chooses it, and wants to buy it, but at the same time, it´s strange to let go of

“I always say that I was born a painter because I´ve been painting since I was a child, for as long as I can remember” something so personal, so intimate and then there´s a learning process that takes place… until you get used to it”.

Not in vain Blanca Orozco considers herself a teacher, for ten years now she has been teaching others how to paint.

She acknowledges her own particular teaching style . “I love to teach, but with a lot of freedom, and I don´t conceive my workshops as anything others than a space for expression and creativity… there always has to be a base and technique, of course, but the concept of the classical academy doesn´t suit me”.

Those who do will find Catalan Bay Village, also known as ‘La Caleta’ - the ancestral resort of choice for Gibraltarians in Gibraltar.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the City on the western side of the Rock abutting the Bay of Gibraltar, known in Spain as the Bay of Algeciras, La Caleta is an acquired taste for the connoisseur.

Here the sun rises several hours before it finally climbs over the Rock to shine on the town on the Western slopes and reclaimed lands.

To the south of Catalan Bay stands the Caleta Hotel, erstwhile Caleta Palace, built in the 1960’s by the Bassadone family and soon to be replaced by a new, modern building.

For half a century, the hotel has attracted a special kind of visitor from abroad - one who fully appreciates the proximity to the sea in all its hues and moods from calm to stormy and the easy going

atmosphere of the Village itself.

To the north east, the Costa del Sol; easterly, the blue expanse of the Mediterranean; to the South, Ceuta, the Spanish enclave across the Strait and looming behind the Village and the hotel, the cliffs and escarpments of the Rock of Gibraltar.

Some few hundred people live in the village, once a fisherman’s cove, but now most of the ‘caleteños’ work “on the other side” in the City even though the majority still fish, at least for sport.

The evidence shows that people have been going to the beach here since at least the very dawn of photography.

The area has for many years been serviced by a good number of restaurants specialising in

Mediterranean food. Immediately next to the beach are ‘La Terraza’ and ‘The Seawave Restaurant’, which provide good seafood in a relatively informal atmosphere. Often, during good weather it is difficult to find a table and therefore booking is advisable.

At the top of the hill leading out of the village is ’La Mamela Restaurant’ with views over the village and the beach. It is renowned not just for its fresh fish but also paella which, by all accounts is among the best in Gibraltar.

Last but not least, ‘Nunos Restaurant’ an award winning Italian ristorante which is in the Caleta Hotel and is a firm favourite for formal and romantic dinners.

Every year The Caleta Hotel hosts a

number of events, the most well known of which is the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, which will run over 10 days from the 21st to the 31st of January 2019. From 2011 to 2014, it was voted the best open event in the world by the Association of Chess Professionals.

None of this fine dining or international prominence cramps the easy going style of the villagers who give Catalan Bay its inherent unique nature and quality of life.

Aquellos que lo hagan, se encontrarán con Catalan Bay Village, también conocida como ‘La Caleta’- lugar tradicionalmente elegido por los gibraltareños como centro turístico en Gibraltar. Lejos del ajetreo de la ciudad del lado occidental del Peñón que limita con la Bahía, La Caleta es un gusto adquirido para los entendidos.

En La Caleta el sol sale varias horas antes de que finalmente se alce sobre el Peñón e ilumine la ciudad que se asienta en su parte occidental y en la zona sobre el mar. Al sur de Catalan Bay se encuentra el Hotel La Caleta, el antiguo Caleta Palace, que la familia Bassadone

construyó en los años 60 y que pronto será reemplazado por un nuevo y moderno edificio.

Durante medio siglo, este hotel ha sido el lugar elegido por un sector de turistas extranjeros, aquellos que valoran tanto la proximidad al mar en todas sus vertientes. pasando de la calma a la tormenta como el ambiente relajado que se respira en el pueblo. Al noreste, la Costa del Sol; al este, el azul del Mediterráneo; al sur, Ceuta, enclave español al otro lado del

Estrecho y, asomándose trás el pueblo y el hotel, los acantilados y zonas escarpadas del Peñón. Solo unos pocos cientos de personas viven en este pueblo que antiguamente era un barrio de pescadores.

Hoy en día la mayoría de ‘los caleteños’ trabaja “al otro lado” en la ciudad, aunque muchos siguen pescando, al menos como actividad deportiva.

Los hechos nos demuestran que la gente visita esta playa desde por lo menos los albores de la fotografía. La zona cuenta desde hace muchos años con un buen número de restaurantes especializados en cocina mediterránea. Justo a la entrada de la playa nos encontramos los restaurantes ‘La Terraza’ y ‘The Seawave’, que ofrecen buen marisco en un ambiente relativamente informal.

A menudo, cuando hace buen tiempo, es difícil conseguir mesa por lo que es aconsejable reservar.

En la parte más alta sobre el pueblo se encuentra

el restaurante ‘La Mamela’ con vistas al pueblo y a la playa. Es bien conocido no sólo por su pescado fresco, sino también por su paella que, según cuentan, es una de las mejores de Gibraltar.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, el restaurante ‘Nunos’, un galardonado restaurante italiano que se encuentra en el Hotel La Caleta, sin lugar a dudas, una de las apuestas favoritas para cenas formales y románticas.

Cada año tiene lugar una serie de eventos en el Hotel La Caleta, el más conocido es el Festival de Ajedrez de Gibraltar (Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival), que se celebrará durante 10 días del 21 al 31 de enero de 2019. La Asociación de Profesionales del Ajedrez lo ha considerado como el mejor evento del mundo desde el año 2011 al 2014.

Ni la buena comida ni su prestigio internacional han influido en el ambiente calmado de sus habitantes, los cuales dotan a Catalan Bay de un carácter y calidad de vida únicos.

Skyrunning en las columnas de Hércules Más de 500 corredores han participado este año en la Euráfrica Trail, una prueba de resistencia entre Gibraltar y el norte de Marruecos, pasando por Los Alcornocales

Mucho más que un cineclub UCA, su sexta temporada en Algeciras

íntegramente en Gibraltar, con salida a las tres de la tarde desde Europa Point, y llegada en la reserva natural de Upper Rock, y que se llevó adelante a pesar de las adversas condiciones meteorológicas existentes esa tarde en la zona del Estrecho.

A lo que sí obligaron dichas inclemencias fue a trasladar el campamento Europa, que se iba a desarrollar al aire libre, al pabellón polideportivo Andrés Mateo, en Algeciras, donde los participantes pudieron, finalmente, reponer fuerzas y pernoctar a cubierto.

El jueves uno de noviembre y el viernes dos, con mucho mejor tiempo, se corrió por tierras españolas, con dos distancias, una de 50 kilómetros y otra de 27, que discurrieron por los otoñales parajes del Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, con salida y llegada en Botafuegos, en el término municipal de Algeciras.

Y ya el sábado, la Euráfrica Trail cruzó el Estrecho en un barca de FRS y se trasladó al norte del continente africano, hasta la localidad pesquera de Belyounech y la impresionante mole de Jbel Musa… la otra mitad, junto con el Peñón gibraltareño, de las míticas Columnas de Hércules.

Deporte y la mitología se daban así la mano en una prueba que va más allá de lo que sería un simple evento deportivo, tal y como manifestaba el propio Aitor

Calle. “La de Marruecos es una etapa con mucho significado para nosotros, por ese simbolismo y también por los alicientes técnicos y paisajísticos: se desarrolla por unos senderos muy vírgenes, con una piedra muy exigente y con unos paisajes y unas vistas brutales de la orilla norte, de nuestra tierra, al otro lado del Estrecho”.

Fiel a su época, la Euráfrica Trail es una prueba que, además, ha sabido encontrado un gran aliado en las redes sociales, imprescindibles para compartir con el mundo las mejores imágenes, sensaciones y reflexiones, tanto de la organización como de los seguidores de la prueba y los propios participantes. En este sentido, bajo la etiqueta (hastagg) #Hazhistoria, Twitter, por ejemplo, se ha consolidado como un valioso aliado… Y tweets como los que se refieren a la FRSBelyounech25 como “la más dura, bella y salvaje de toda la historia de Euráfrica18. Skyrunning en estado puro” han dado la vuelta al mundo, sirviendo como aliciente para quienes, sin duda, empiezan a pensar ya en la prueba de 2019.

They say that sport is a response to mankind’s innate drive to excel; the need to push beyond our own limits while, at the same time, connecting with those who pursue the same challenge, turning it into a shared experience… This endeavour was shown once more by over 500 runners who participated in the Eurafrica Trail, a special test of endurance that took participants through Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco. The most recent event was held between 31st October and 4th November.

The promoter of the race, Aitor Calle, was very pleased with the media coverage and the interest it had ignited, as well as the public response. Once again this year the athletes used up all the competitor registration numbers, not just in the local stages, but also the trans-continental ones.

This year’s Eurafrica Trail kicked-off on Wednesday 31st October. Stage one, the “Vertical Race” took place entirely

Dicen que el deporte tiene su principal razón de ser en la capacidad de superación del ser humano, en la necesidad de rebasar los propios límites y, al mismo tiempo, en el contacto y la convivencia con quienes persiguen ese mismo sueño, convirtiéndolo en una experiencia compartida… Así han podido comprobarlo, un año más, los más de 500 corredores participantes en la Euráfrica Trail, una peculiar prueba de resistencia que se desarrolla entre Gibraltar, España y Marruecos, y cuya última edición hasta la fecha se ha llevado a cabo entre los días 31 de octubre y 4 de noviembre.

El promotor de la prueba, Aitor Calle, se mostró muy satisfecho ante los medios de comunicación con las expectativas que había despertado el evento, así como con la respuesta encontrada, un año más, en los deportistas, “agotando dorsales en las etapas locales y cada vez más implicados en la parte intercontinental de la carrera”.

in Gibraltar, starting at three o`clock in the afternoon from Europa Point, and ending in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. That afternoon, despite adverse weather conditions throughout the Straits of Gibraltar the race went ahead. That inclement weather did however caused the “Europe camp” which was going to be set up in the open air to be moved to the Andrés Mateo sports centre in Algeciras where the participants were able to recover their strength and spent the night indoors.

Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd November saw much better weather conditions. The participants ran through the autumnal scenery of Los Alcornocales Nature Park with two stages, one of 50 kilometres and another of 27, starting and ending in Botafuegos, in the municipality of Algeciras.

Finally on Saturday, the Eurafrica Trail crossed the Straits to Africa in an FRS

ferry, landing in the fishing village of Belyounech and at the foot of Jebel Musa…the other half, together with The Rock of Gibraltar, that makes up the mythical Pillars of Hercules.

Skyrunning in its purest form “has encircled the world, serving as an incentive for those who, without a doubt, are already starting to think about the 2019 event”.

Algeciras fue, en un tiempo no tan remoto, una ciudad de cines: el Almanzor, el Delicias, el Florida, el Magallanes…

Lamentablemente, y al igual que ocurriera en otras ciudades, también aquí aquellas viejas salas comerciales de antaño fueron desapareciendo, una tras otra, hasta que, a principios del año 2000, tras el cierre de los multicines de Las Palomas, ya no quedó abierta ninguna.

Sin embargo, el amor por el séptimo arte no desapareció, y, a finales del año 2013, el grupo 4 en Letra, en colaboración con la Asociación AlCultura y la Universidad de Cádiz (UCA), consiguió poner en marcha el CineClub AlCultura Cinema, con una programación periódica y proyecciones que se llevan a cabo cada jueves, de octubre a mayo, a las 7 de la tarde, en el salón de actos de la Escuela Politécnica Superior. Actualmente, el cineclub reúne a una media de 150 personas.

“La idea se nos ocurrió paseando un domingo por la tarde, comentando algo

que habíamos oído en la radio sobre un cineclub de Gerona… En aquel entonces estaban también cerrados hasta los cines de Palmones, y nos dijimos: ¿y por qué no hacemos una cadena de amigos y montamos nosotros aquí, en Algeciras, un cineclub?”, recuerda Eugenio Vega.

Eugenio, Mercedes Silva e Inma Gutiérrez son los nombres y los rostros que están detrás de una aventura que ya está más que consolidada, y que, desde hace cuatro años, también tiene su continuidad durante los meses de julio y agosto, con un cine de verano en los espacios al aire libre de la Asociación AlCultura, en la Dársena del Saladillo. Varias de esas proyecciones llegaron a reunir, el pasado verano, a cerca de 300 personas.

Se trata, no obstante, de una iniciativa sin ánimo de lucro. Los socios del cineclub pagan un bono que les da derecho a ver todas las películas que se proyectan durante el curso (el de este año son 40 euros por un total de 32 películas), y esa aportación,

más los donativos de los tickets en taquilla, se destina, íntegramente, al mantenimiento de la actividad. Además, la Universidad también colabora facilitando una película al mes en versión original subtitulada.

El pasado jueves 4 de octubre, AlCultura Cinema inauguró su sexta temporada, y lo hizo con una de las películas más especiales del año: “Campeones”, la cinta de Javier Fesser que representará a España en la próxima edición de los Oscar.

“No se trata de un cine al uso, es mucho más… un encuentro de amigos con pasión no sólo por ver buen cine, sino también por disfrutar de esa experiencia que es el cine compartido, el que se vive y se comenta después…”, comenta Eugenio Vega, refiriéndose a siempre interesante coloquio posterior que modera cada jueves Ángel Luis Jiménez, y que cuenta con un grupo pequeño, pero entusiasta y fiel, de seguidores.

Not that long ago Algeciras was home to many cinemas: El Almanzor, El Delicias, El Florida, El Magallanes... but alas, as has happened in many other cities, the commercial cinemas of yesteryear disappeared one after the other until finally the Las Palomas multiplex closed its doors for the last time in 2000 marking the end of the commercial cinema era in Algeciras.

However, the love for the Seventh Art did not disappear with it and at the end of 2013 “El Grupo 4 en Letra”, in conjunction with the Alcultura Association and the University of Cadiz (UCA), set up the Alcultura Cineclub which offers a regular programme of film screenings every Thursday, from October until May, at 7 pm, in the auditorium of La Escuela Politecnica Superior. Currently, the Cineclub attracts an average of 150 cinema goers.

Eugenio Vega recalls: “We came up with the idea while out walking one Sunday afternoon and commenting on something

we had heard lon the radio about a movie club in Gerona (Northern Spain). At that time, even the multiplex in Palmones had closed, so we said to ourselves: Why don´t we gather together a group of friends and set up a movie club here in Algeciras?”.

Eugenio, Mercedes Silva and Inma Gutiérrez are the names to the faces behind this now well established venture, Over the last four years, the Alcultura Association has followed up during the months of July and August, with a summer cinema their open-air areas in the old Dock of El Saladillo. Last summer successful offerings, attracted audiences of nearly 300 people.

This is, however, a not-for-profit initiative.

The members of the Cineclub can buy a movie pass that allows them to see all the films screened during the season (this year it is 40 euros for a total of 32 films) and this contribution, plus the monies from the box office sales, is entirely designated to the running of the operation. In addition,

the University by provides one film per month which is tscreened in its original version with subtitles.

On Thursday, 4th October 2018, the Alcultura Cinema inaugurated its sixth season with one of the most special films of the year: ‘Champions’, a film by Javier Fesser which will represent Spain in the next edition of the Oscars. “This is not about ordinary cinema, it´s much more

than that …a meeting of friends with a passion not only for watching good films, but also for enjoying the experience together, and appreciating and talking about it afterwards… “, said Eugenio Vega, referring to the interesting and intimate discussions chaired every Thursday by Angel Luis Jimenez, which attracts a small but enthusiastic and faithful group of followers.

Dicen que los pueblos que no conocen su historia están condenados a repetirla. Para eso, para que la historia no se repita, ni se olvide, existen lugares como la Casa de la Memoria La Sauceda, ubicada en pleno casco histórico de Jimena de la Frontera, y para muchos, una pequeña ‘joya’ aún desconocida, dentro y fuera de la comarca.

La Casa de la Memoria de Jimena, tal y como reza en su página web, es “un espacio público para la investigación, la divulgación y la reflexión sobre la memoria histórica”. Dispone de varias salas de exposiciones, un archivo documental, una biblioteca con más de 1.900 volúmenes y una sala de conferencias y proyecciones.

Abierta a la colaboración de investigadores e instituciones de toda Andalucía, contiene documentación y testimonios sobre la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939) y la posterior represión franquista en todo el Campo de Gibraltar, así como en las poblaciones cercanas.

Promovida y gestionada por el Foro por

la Memoria del Campo de Gibraltar y la Asociación de Familiares de Represaliados del Franquismo en La Sauceda y El Marrufo, la Casa de la Memoria de Jimena abrió sus puertas en 2016, tras unos intensos trabajos de rehabilitación. El inmueble (que durante la dictadura había pertenecido a Juan Ferrer, un comerciante ferretero que también fue masón y que había estado nueve años en la cárcel) fue adquirido en estado ruinoso en 2012 por

el empresario linense Miguel Rodríguez, propietario del Grupo Festina, hijo de un trabajador que estuvo preso por luchar en defensa de la República, y nieto y bisnieto de fusilados en el cortijo del Marrufo.

Según recuerda Juan Moriche, miembro de la directiva del Foro, “justo dos días antes de abrir la Casa, un matrimonio de Jimena que anteriormente iba a comprarla para hacer un hostal, y que finalmente no la compró, nos entregó una urna de

cristal y madera que se habían encontrado emparedada en un muro, y que resultó ser el acta de la junta electoral de la elecciones municipales del 12 de abril de 1931, apenas un par de días antes de la proclamación de la República. Probablemente, el propio Juan Ferrer la habría escondido para que se conservara… así que la Casa, en cierto modo, ya era de la Memoria antes de que nosotros, muchos años después, la abriéramos al público como tal”.

El apoyo de la Diputación Provincial de Cádiz y de la Dirección General de Memoria Democrática de la Junta de Andalucía permitieron adquirir parte del equipamiento de la Casa y financiar el desarrollo de sus primeras actividades, y a ese apoyo se han ido sumando otras instituciones, como el Centro de Estudios Andaluces y los ayuntamientos de Castellar, San Roque y Casares.

Asimismo, el archivo documental de la Casa de la Memoria se ha venido nutriendo en estos años del trabajo impagable de investigadores como los historiadores José Manuel Algarbani y Fernando Sígler, el arqueólogo Jesús Román, y el investigador Luis García Bravo; y la, en principio, modesta biblioteca se ha ido enriqueciendo con donaciones de instituciones y particulares, como las realizadas por el ex Defensor del Pueblo Andaluz, José Chamizo, el periodista y pintor Andrés Vázquez de Sola, el historiador Antonio Morales y los colaboradores del Foro Juan García del Castillo y Francisco Larios.

Además de organizar y acoger exposiciones, conferencias, proyecciones de películas y documentales y presentaciones de libros, la Casa de la Memoria colabora con colegios e institutos en la puesta en marcha de talleres y actividades formativas, y mantiene abierto un servicio de atención a las víctimas de aquella represión y a sus familiares.

They say that peoples who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. For this reason, so that history is neither repeated nor forgotten, there are places such as La Casa de la Memoria La Sauceda, which is located in the heart of the Historic Centre of Jimena de la Frontera, which is for many, a small ‘jewel’ still relatively unknown, inside and outside Jimena de la Frontera.

According to its website, La Casa de la Memoria of Jimena, is “a public space for research, dissemination and reflection of historical memories”. It has several exhibition halls, a documentary archive, a library with more than 1,900 books and a conference and projection room. It is open to and invites collaboration from researchers and institutions from all over Andalusia. It contains documentation and testimonies on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the subsequent Francoist repression throughout the Campo de Gibraltar, as well as the surrounding areas.

Promoted and managed by the Forum of Remembrance of the Campo de Gibraltar and the Association of Relatives who suffered Reprisals from Francoism in La Sauceda and El Marrufo, La Casa de la Memoria of Jimena opened its doors in 2016, after an extensive refurbishment.

During the Dictatorship the property had belonged to Juan Ferrer, a hardware merchant who spent nine years in prison for being a freemason. It was acquired in dilapidated condition in 2012 by a businessman from La Línea de la Concepción Miguel Rodríguez, owner of the renowned international watch makers, the Grupo Festina, himself the son of a worker who was imprisoned for fighting for the Republic. Rodriguez is the grandson and great-grandson of the people executed by firing squad in the farm house of El Marrufo.

Juan Moriche, a member of the Forum´s board of directors recalls that “just two days before opening the house, a couple from Jimena, who had wanted to buy and convert it into a Bed and Breakfast but pulled out, gave us a glass and wooden ballot box that had been found hidden in a wall. It turned out to be the minutes of the

electoral board for the municipal elections of 12th April 1931, a couple of days before the Republic was declared. It is likely that it was hidden there by Juan Ferrer himself so that it could be preserved. Thus, La Casa de la Memoria had foretold its eventual use many years before we opened it to the public”.

The support of the Cadiz Provincial Council and the General Directorate of Democratic Memory of the Andalusian Regional Government allowed La Casa de

la Memoria to buy new equipment and pay for the development of its first activities.

There has also been support from other institutions, such as the Andalusian Studies Centre and the town councils of Castellar, San Roque and Casares.

Likewise, La Casa de la Memoria´s documents archive has been enhanced in recent years with the invaluable work of researchers, such as historians José Manuel Algarbani and Fernando Sigler, archaeologist Jesús Román and

the researcher Luis García Bravo. The initially modest library has been expanded through donations from institutions and individuals, such as those made by the former Andalusian Ombudsman, José Chamizo, journalist and painter Andrés Vázquez de Sola, historian Antonio Morales and collaborators of the Forum Juan García del Castillo and Francisco Larios.

As well as organizing and hosting exhibitions, conferences, films, documentary screenings and book presentations, La Casa de la Memoria collaborates with schools in the implementation of workshops and training activities, and runs a service for the victims of the repression and their families.
