SPOTLIGHT ON
Environment and Ecology Applied Research

At RDP, we are committed to driving real change in the area of Environment and Ecology.
One recent example is a three-year study of black bears in the Beaver Hills Biosphere region. Sandra MacDougall, Biology instructor at RDP, received a historic grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to explore how fast the bear population is growing and what bears are eating seasonally, with a lens to predict the impact of black bear predation on Elk Island National Park’s ungulate populations (e.g. elk and moose).
RDP students will contribute to the research by helping to track bears using telemetry gear and collect scat samples of black bears. Through these activities they will learn about bear movement and feeding ecology. Students will also conduct lab analyses to examine bear diets, co-supervised by RDP Chemistry Instructor Warren Elgersma. This research provides RDP students with immersive applied research experiences to enhance their education and training.
For hands-on learners, creators and future tradespeople.
Skilled trades keep the world running. At RDP, you’ll train in state-of-the-art facilities while building expertise directly in the workplace. With industry partnerships, the latest technology and experienced instructors, you’ll be set for a rewarding, high-demand career.

“I have learned a tremendous amount during the last three years. The program is very well structured and offered by a highly skilled and professional instructor. I can highly recommend the course to anyone interested in the culinary field.” – Louis, Cook Apprentice
Trades & Apprenticeships

In 2025-26, RDP earned gold in welding for the seventh year in a row at the Skills Canada Alberta competition, bringing the total medal count to 94 at the Alberta and National competitions.
RDP partners with CACI, a program for high school students to explore trades careers and gain real-world experience while still in school.
