WHEN DEBRA LYNN MURPHY decided to return to post-secondary education after several years away, she felt unsure about how her experience would unfold. That uncertainty quickly faded once she entered the two‑year Legal Assistant Diploma program, where she was warmly welcomed by her classmates and immediately felt part of a supportive academic community. This sense of belonging, combined with Debra’s exceptional ability, helped her earn the 2026 Governor General’s Academic Medal. Debra’s student experience at RDP reached beyond her coursework. She became involved in campus life and formed meaningful friendships. As a member of the Legal Assistant Student Society, she helped organize guest speakers and fundraising activities. She also made time to support her well‑being by using the on-campus Collicutt Performance Fitness Zone, which helped her balance academic responsibilities with personal health. Since moving to Alberta in 2006, Debra has built a life rooted in family, community and service. Today, she is applying her education as a Legal Assistant at Emma & Co. Law Firm, where she supports clients in Real Estate and Family Law. She enjoys her new career and looks forward to continuing to learn and grow.

Through the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Living Lab Project, RDP is piloting a demand-based HVAC control strategy to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The projected impact is 40% reduction in electricity use, a 25% decrease in natural gas consumption and 10.5 metric tons less CO₂ emissions per year This project is hands-on learning in action, engaging 50+ students, 12 faculty members, 15 industry experts and 7 community partners in creating real-world solutions.

Global Learning & Applied Research At RDP, learning goes beyond the classroom— taking students around the world to apply their skills in real-world settings. Through a study abroad experience in Costa Rica, student Sanj Sharma worked as a research assistant with Centro de Rescate de Especies Marinas Amenazadas (CREMA), contributing to conservation efforts for endangered marine species. In the field, she applied classroom knowledge to hands-on research by collecting data, adapting to changing environments and collaborating with international teams. These experiences not only built her confidence but also strengthened her path toward a future in medicine. This kind of immersive, applied learning gives RDP students the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, gain global perspectives and develop the skills needed to make a meaningful impact.

What about Apprenticeships and Continuing Education? Most RDP programs require an application for admission. However, Apprenticeship programs and many Continuing Education programs have a different registration process.
