Presidential Welcome Address

From President Moon to NSU Students

January 2nd, 2025

Dear NSU students:

As I begin my presidency of this remarkable institution, I want to thank each of you for contributing to the learning culture we have built here at Nova Southeastern University.

Whether you’re a freshman in one of our undergraduate programs, a graduate student in one of our advanced degree programs or a student preparing to complete your professional degree, you are an essential member of the NSU family.

I feel a deep commitment and responsibility to build on the leadership of our faculty, staff, researchers and health care practitioners who have contributed to your academic experience and to the leadership you have developed and demonstrated.

Because of you, your fellow students and alumni, and those who are inspiring you to explore the wealth of knowledge and professional possibilities that exist in our great university, we are on a path to becoming Florida’s top private research university.

Our path forward builds on a history of innovation and success. Over the course of our 60 years, NSU has been a beacon of pioneering advancements in higher education. We have been among the first and best to recognize student and employer needs and respond to them with agility and impact. And we’ll continue to lead as the world demands new and better approaches to education, research, health care outcomes and career readiness.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, giants such as President Emeritus George Hanbury and other leaders who have shaped this university and enriched so many lives and communities.

When we harness our shared passions along with the timeless values that have defined our university, there’s no limit to what each of you will be able to achieve with your NSU degree. I am honored to be on this journey with you, and I look forward to working with my team of administrators, your deans and faculty, and all of you to continue to build and enhance a learning environment for your success and achievement.

Sincerely,

KPCOM Student Testimonial: MED. ED. Alumni: Robert Wood

s Medical Education program has been one of the best ve made in my life. The program has a passionate and caring faculty, and a curriculum that prepares you. After realizing that I was not happy pursuing clinical medicine, I sought to transition into a career in higher education while still maintaining involvement in medicine. It is never easy to make a career change, but this unique program gave me the confidence, skills, and degree qualifications necessary for a career in higher education centered around teaching the upcoming generation of nursing and medical students. I was also able to find a couple mentors in the program that helped me plan the next steps of my career which was invaluable to me. Almost one year after graduation, I could not be happier with my career choice and am proud to be an alumnus of the

In memory of Dr. Stephen Grant

October1958 – October 2024

MS in Public Health faculty member Dr. Stephen Grant passed away this past October 25, 2024. Dr. Grant served as a Professor here at Nova Southeastern University and as the project leader in the AutoNation Institute for Breast Cancer Research and Care and Project SEAMIST. Dr. Grant professional background was not only in academia but in research as well. He worked on Breast Cancer and perfected the glycophorin A somatic mutation assay for use in studying complex diseases such as autism and cancer, and to measure the mutational impact of many different industrial chemicals and cigarette smoke.

Dr. Grant’s work on the impact of secondhand smoke on unborn children was translated from the scientific literature into laws in several states banning cigarette smoking in places frequented by pregnant women. He performed a great deal of community and professional service in his life speaking at health fairs, cancer events and serving in grammar school and high school science fairs and poster competitions. He also served on many expert committees for the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Grant was a generous mentor, spending a great deal of time with high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in Pittsburgh and in Fort Lauderdale. He had a gift for helping them understand statistics and data interpretation. He considered these students to be as much a part of his scientific legacy as his nearly 100 peer reviewed publications and 2 books.

Business Continuity for One?

The goal of this Business Continuity Plan (BCP) outline is to assist sole proprietors in considering the processes needed to ensure the continued operation of a solo software, remote-based business; especially during a natural disaster based on your home office location or in the event of physical injury.

Risk Assessment:

Sole Proprietors face specific risks due to its remote operation, including but not limited to:

- Potential disruption during a natural disaster, which may include power outages and internet connectivity issues.

- Business interruption due to physical injury or health emergencies affecting the sole employee.

Mitigation Strategies:

To address these risks and ensure the continuity of operations, the following strategies will need to be implemented:

1. Remote Work Setup: All critical business data, including client projects and documentation, will be securely stored on cloud-based platforms to enable remote access from any location with internet connectivity.

2. Backup and Redundancy: Regular automated backups of essential data will be carried out to prevent data loss in the event of system failures. Redundant internet connections and power sources will be considered to ensure continued operations during adverse weather conditions.

3. Access to Alternative Work Locations: Identify alternative work locations, such as local co-working spaces or temporary office setups, with reliable internet access in case the primary work environment is compromised during hurricane season or due to physical injury.

4. Personal Continuity Plan: The sole employee will establish a personal continuity plan to address potential health-related emergencies, ensuring that client obligations are communicated and managed effectively in the employee's absence.

Response and Recovery:

In the event of an actual disruption, the following steps will need to be taken to respond and recover:

1. Communication Plan: Establish clear communication channels with clients to inform them of any antici-

pated delays or changes in project timelines due to operational disruptions caused by hurricanes or physical injury.

2. Technology Support: Maintain a list of technology support providers for rapid response and resolution of any technical issues that may arise during disruptive events.

Plan Maintenance:

Your Business Continuity Plan should be reviewed and updated annually to account for changes in technology, business operations, or potential risks, especially regarding natural disaster preparedness and personal injury mitigation.

Additionally, periodic drills and scenario-based exercises should be conducted to ensure preparedness and familiarize the sole employee with the plan.

Approval and Implementation:

Your Business Continuity Plan should be communicated to all relevant stakeholders, including clients and service providers. Regular training on emergency protocols and plan updates should be conducted to ensure effective implementation.

It is essential to communicate and coordinate with clients well in advance about potential disruptions prior to a natural disaster.

By implementing a Business Continuity Plan, your business will be able to maintain operational resilience and continue delivering high-quality services to clients, even during a natural disaster and in the event of physical injury.
