Dr. Jesse Spearo, M.S. in Disaster and Emergency Management faculty, presented at the National Homeland Security Conference in Miami Beach in July 2024. His presentation was voted one of the best.
Presented work: Community Preparedness and Resilience –“Disasters Don't Discriminate: A Blueprint for Addressing Social Vulnerabilities in Disaster Planning”, with Molly Bargmann, Andrew Phelps, Dr. Jesse P. Spearo, and Jonathan Romine.
Daniel Berry, M.S. in Disaster and Emergency Management 2023 student, also presented at the National Homeland Security Conference in Miami Beach in July 2024. Panel Discussion: Large scale event planning national and local perspective.
In 2023, the City of Tampa, along with mutual-aid agencies and community stakeholders, conducted a series of exercises to prepare for mass casualty incidents (MCI) during large-scale special events. This included a progressive approach to include a Table-Top Exercise, Functional Exercise, and culminated with a Full-Scale Exercise before the Winter Special Event Season to measure the response to the scenarios from law enforcement, fire rescue, emergency management, and the hospital system.
March 30, 1943 – July 23, 2024
MS in Disaster Emergency and Management faculty member Dr. James Greenstone passed away this past July 23rd, 2024. From 2013 to 2024, Dr. James Greenstone was an adjunct professor. In 2021 he was a Golden Apple winner.
Dr. Greenstone made significant contributions to the field of mental health, crisis management and law enforcement. He worked for various colleges and universities as a teacher, authored numerous books, and served as an editor for many professional journals. He served as a Deputy Sheriff and Academy Instructor with the Dallas and Tarrant County Sheriff's Offices, and his work as
a Police Officer Reserve, Police Psychologist, and Hostage Negotiator with the Fort Worth Police Department. For over 50 years, he maintained a private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Dallas and Fort Worth, impacting countless lives through his dedication and expertise.
